Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF files won't read at all

2017-07-26 Thread Steve
Do no files read, or just a particular one? If it is a particular one, it
may be an image file which you will need to scan using Jaws document
recognition, or open it with a OCR program that scans .pdf files like
OpenBook or Kurzweil.

I don't know if Adobe Reader is not installed properly, and unfortunately I
can't find a good converter except Docuscan which is way costly. Is
another Adobe version more accessible, or is there something I should check
or uncheck as far as accessibility is concerned? Or should I set more
graphics or some other helpful way of reading that may be listed under
configuration manager?

Thanks.

Try the JAWS convenient OCR feature. Press JAWS key+spacebar, release, then o
for OCR, then d for document. It can take a few moments, but the operation
usually produces a decent conversion in a separate window.

You can use the convenient OCR feature to read these documents.
When you have the document open in acrobat reader press the jawsKey+spacebar,
followed by the letter O, then press the letter D and the OCR will begin.

Hello listers:

I believe that someone on this list had mentioned that Word has a
conversion feature for converting PDF files into word documents. If
this is true, could you tell me which version of Word it is, and what
the steps are to perform this function?

Many thanks.

Good Morning,

I am at my wit's end with PDF files, so I thought I'd inquire for help

If there's a better forum for this, or we should be discussing it off

I'd be happy to do that.

I've used JAWS to read basic PDF files, ones with practically no
formatting.

For instance, a novel in PDF format tends to read pretty well.

But I purchase a lot of PDF documents from www.drivethrurpg.com, and most
of
them aren't read very well by JAWS. I've seen many of the following
errors.

No spaces between words

On two-column pages, the columns being smashed together and read as one
nonsensical block of text

With tables, the left hand column being presented first, and then the

hand column, not side by side, but all the left hand column entries first,
and then the right.

Because of all of these difficulties, I've concluded that I may need new

What are the optimal settings to use when opening a PDF file? Is there
anything I can do to improve the conversion of PDF documents to text? I

it'll convert them. Is it any good? The problem with that approach is most
of these documents are larger than 10 MB, which I believe exceeds the
largest Email attachment I can send.

I welcome all suggestions and insights. Failing that, I will contact the
publishers and ask if I can get copies of the documents I've purchased in

I've tried both of those. You are right that sometimes it corrects the
problems, but with a few stubborn files, it's still just gibberish.

And in some cases, JAWS can't see the text at all, even though it's real
text, not an image, and even though sighted readers see it just fine.

Hi Elf,

I play numerous games, and often pick up indie games. In truth, most
indie

games are accessible, but when they're not, most publishers are willing to
work with me to get copies in alternative formats.

So, the primary offenders are:

Just about everything from White Wolf. I'd love to read their books, new
and
old, but PDF conversions are absolutely, positively terrible. One
example,

Promethean, has a whole chapter that JAWS and other PDF interpreters (like
the one on the Braille Sense) cannot see at all. Most books, like the
Exalted series, jumble everything together, or don't read the text in a
logical flow.

Dresden Files: This is a small press game. They did some cool layout
stuff, with numerous comments interspersed throughout the text that are
meant to provide levity and insight, but which simply confuse JAWS and
other

PDF processes.

Amaranthine: Another small press book. This author didn't respond, and
the
text is simply disorganized, with the thread of the text being lost at
least

once per page.

Traveller: The tables are not presented logically, and Traveller has tons
and tons of tables.

Pathfinder: Mostly just text being presented out of order.

Can you help with any of these?

I believe in all cases Acrobat Reader says that these documents are
untagged. I've been told that tagging is a time-consuming, tedious
process.

nancy,

it seems to me that the limitations you mention are due in large part to
the free Adobe Reader's limitations. there is an Adobe Professional
Edition, which (I believe) costs about $300, that would apparently
convert those pdf's properly. Another option, if you have it, is to use
OCR software to convert the pdf's and image pdf's into documents that
will read more coherently. the other day, I came across a heavily tabled
pdf, which read fine on the internet but which - when downloaded, JAWS12
and the free Adobe Reader had difficulty with. it reads properly when
converted by Kurzweil 1000, OCR,and would read well thus if converted by
Open Book, etc.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] PDF Files

Good Morning,

I am at my wit's end with PDF files, so I thought I'd inquire for help
here.
If there's a better forum for this, or we should be discussing it off
list,

I'd be happy to do that.

I've used JAWS to read basic PDF files, ones with practically no
formatting.

For instance, a novel in PDF format tends to read pretty well.

But I purchase a lot of PDF documents from www.drivethrurpg.com, and
most of
them aren't read very well by JAWS. I've seen many of the following
errors.

No spaces between words

On two-column pages, the columns being smashed together and read as
one

nonsensical block of text

With tables, the left hand column being presented first, and then the
right
hand column, not side by side, but all the left hand column entries
first,

and then the right.
Whole sections of books that JAWS cannot see at all, even though I am
assured there is text there

One pair of files where the author used lots of notes in the text and
JAWS
had no idea where to put them, so it just reads them mixed up with the
rest

of the text.

Because of all of these difficulties, I've concluded that I may need
new
strategies for dealing with PDF files. Perhaps I'm doing something
wrong?

What are the optimal settings to use when opening a PDF file? Is
there
anything I can do to improve the conversion of PDF documents to text?
I
seem to recall that there's a place that we can Email PDF documents
to, and
it'll convert them. Is it any good? The problem with that approach is
most

of these documents are larger than 10 MB, which I believe exceeds the
largest Email attachment I can send.

I welcome all suggestions and insights. Failing that, I will contact
the
publishers and ask if I can get copies of the documents I've purchased
in an
alternate electronic format. It's just very frustrating to know that
the
information is there and available, but still inaccessible to me.
Before I
contact the publishers, though, I want to make certain that I'm not
doing

anything wrong.

Many thanks.

Nancy

Thanks for the suggestion. I knew I could use OpenBook to convert image PDFs

it seems to me that the limitations you mention are due in large part to
the free Adobe Reader's limitations. there is an Adobe Professional
Edition, which (I believe) costs about $300, that would apparently
convert those pdf's properly. Another option, if you have it, is to use
OCR software to convert the pdf's and image pdf's into documents that

I sometimes use my Kurzweil 1000 on an untagged and textual pdf (where
there is no problem with JAWS) in order to find out more accurate
information on layout of a page, (this being a newspaper. Some of the
text is not where it should be on the page. K1000 does a better job than
the free Adobe Reader, even if it's a little slower to get going.)
Adobe's accessibility tools from the screen-reader's end do not solve
all the problems we may encounter with pdf's, image or text.

If they were locked, you'd know because you'd be asked for a password to
unlock them to make available for reading, printing, etc. Again, where
Adobe professional is not available, the OCR option is worth trying also

Hi Guys,

I am very new to JAWS, so I apologise in advance for my lack of knowledge.
I have been sent a PDF form and have been assured that it is accessible and
can be completed and then printed off.

I have never opened a PDF on Windows before as I am generally a Mac user,
but sadly VoiceOver on the Mac does not play nicely with Adobe products.

I opened the PDF in Adobe Acrobat 10 and the version of JAWS is 11. Should
the PDF start reading automatically? I have tabbed around and also hit the
arrow keys, but nothing seems to happen.

I can get the application menus to work, but I can't seem to get JAWS to
speak anything on the 7 page document. I have enough sight to see that it
is not a blank page.

Do I have to do anything specific with a interactive form? Or is there a
keyboard shortcut I am not pressing to tell JAWS to start reading the PDF?

Many thanks in advance and if anyone would rather discuss this off list,
then feel free to email me.

Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF Files

2011-01-30 Thread LaMcAs
Hi Alan

Why bother with printing it at all?

Open OpenBook and open the pdf file there and OB will do what is needed to
read it to you!

Just like you get paper stuff through your post to read you just scan it,
having the computer copy of something just cuts out the scanning bit.

You can print anything you produce to the OpenBook Virtual printer, I'm
pretty sure of that but if I'm wrong someone will correct me!

Hello Friends,
I never receive many PDF Files, and the ones I do are usually advertising,
so I never bother with them.

I am sorry if this question sounds stupid, but instead of worrying about
Adobe which I have not really had any success with for years, if I ever
receive anything important, can I simply print out the PDF file, and scan it
with Open Book?

I mean, there is an option to print out the PDF file correct?

Once again, I apologize if this is off the wall, just never had any luck
with using Adobe .

I am a pretty lame JAWS user!
Even though I have been using it for 11 years now!

Yup did all that and still no luck! However, the document can be read out by
the built in screen reader that comes with Acrobat Reader, but I don't think
that allows me to fill in form fields.

Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF Files

2011-01-30 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Dear Alan,

I've never got pdf files to convert successfully using openbook 7.02,
even though one is supposed to be able to do it via the virtual printer,
as openbook hangs the pc and I ended up having to restart, as all
speech, including jaws was gone.

If the document in pdf is printed material and not graphics, the
versions of Jaws since version 10 works ok with Adobe from version 8.

The alternative option would be to use a mainstream scanning program
like omnipage with jaws, or Kurzweil.

I don't personally have experience doing the OCR with Omnipage, but a
blind colleague gets good results with Omnipage and assists me
regularly with conversions of court cases.

Regards,

Riana

I best take this to the Open Book list then, but thank you for the great

Sure, do a windows search (windows key f), put in *.pdf, have it start
searching in your hard drive's root directory i.e. c:\ and then check the
box to search in all subfolders.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Hello,
when in the search dialogue of windows select files and folders. Next
activate a button that has to be called something like more options.

Select adobe acrobat document. Leave the file name empty and voilà.
All pdf documents.
I always hope I am clear enough since I don't know the exact names of the
buttons and menus in an english version of windows.

So be creative.
Everything I did was reachable by tab key. No need for Jaws cursor.
Cheers

Hi Phil,

There is a software program called CommonLook PDF Enterprise Compliance
Management Framework (or ECMF) which automatically locates PDF documents on
systems. Furthermore, it gives you verification of which of those PDFs are
Section 508 and W3C complaint, and are likely to work well with JAWS. If
you're located in California, contact me directly for more info. If not,
