Not sure why, but the document in question now reads fine with the

Thanks so much for heading me in the right direction here!

Hello, everyone.

I have recently noticed a problem with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC version 17.0.

For some reason, words are often run together in the document when I'm
trying to read it.

This problem does not appear on the visual screen. In other words, if
someone sighted looks at the document, it looks fine, with no words or
characters run together.

This seems to occur mainly with Microsoft Word documents that have been
converted to a PDF file format.

I'm thinking that this problem might be a Jaws issue, because the document
displays fine visually.

Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, is there something I need to
change either in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC or Jaws to make documents read more
properly?

Thanks as always!

In my work environment, I use ABBY FineReader Pro 12 to convert PDF files
containing images of text to Microsoft Word format, which I then read.
There's now a newer version of ABBYY FineReader, but I can't attest to its
accessibility. With version 12, it's easy to convert a PDF file via the
context menu in Windows File Explorer.

Unfortunately, this is a shortcoming of the scanner, combined with the OCR
feature. In order to fix this issue, you'll have to increase your DPI (dots
Per Inch) as it would seem that your scanner isn't up to the task.

If that doesn't work, try scanning it into a colour document, while
increasing the DPI, and see if that works.

It'll take you a while to scan a document, but if you want accuracy, then
this is the price you'll have to pay, that, or get a better scanner.

2017-09-09 Thread Scorpio
Unfortunately, you'll have to either, get a subscription, or purchase the
program outright.

Not sure if they're still allowing the option to purchase the product
outright, as I heard this option was going the way of the dinosaur, or not,
but if they don't, you can always try an older version that someone may be
selling, as they'll do the same thing. The only difference is that you
won't get the same OCR technology as the new version, but you do what you
can afford.

Basically, you have to convert the PDF to text, html, word, or some other
format more easily read with Jaws.

My advice is HTML, as that one retains continuity better, and is easier to
read.

I think the free version used to have an option to convert the PDF to plain
text, but I'm not sure if they've done away with that.

In any case, you'll have to save the document to your computer first, then
attempt the conversion. Do not leave the file in the temp folder when you
convert it.

Hope that helps.

Justin, I think some clarity is called for here. As you know, JAWS is a
speech synthesizer, so you don't convert PDF to JAWS. Instead, you convert a
PDF file into a form that JAWS can read. Many PDF files are readable without
us having to do anything, except for making sure Adobe's accessibility
settings are correct. If a PDF file isn't immediately readable, some
programs enable you to perform optical character recognition (OCR) to create
a new document that JAWS can read. Convenient OCR is such a program built in
to recent versions of JAWS. However, as other listers have pointed out, it
doesn't format well, which is one reason why people use the Kurzweil Reader
and similar devices. Even then, some PDF files defy any kind of
accessibility conversion, as Greg may be finding out and as I've encountered
with the receipts my audio guy issued to me this week.

Hi Jim,

Here you go:
Hi All,

For those new to Adobe Reader DC, try the settings changes below to see if
they help with its performance.

Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to explain the
consequences of unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what
they have to say.

1. Open Adobe Reader DC from your desktop or start menu icons, go into
preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view.
If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow
down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below "Security."
Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck
but, optional:
Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked.

Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked.
Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told
that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other
changes first.

2. Launch the Edit menu, Alt + E, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu
and open it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up
Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the
last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on "Next"
in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to
the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and make
sure it is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay
button, & press enter. You can now close the program & give it a try on a
PDF file.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe acrobat reader dc

2016-08-08 Thread David Moore

Hi,
If you get an empty document, that means that the PDF cannot be read with a
screen reader until OCR is done on it. With JAWS, just press insert+space
and press o then d, and JAWS will do OCR on the PDF document. With NVDA,
there is a OCR add-on that will do the same thing. You need to download and
install that OCR add-on for NVDA and then it will do OCR on the PDF. Most
PDFs are not created to be read with a screen reader, because they are a
picture of text instead of text itself. this is why OCR needs to be done on
the PDF even with Adobe Products.

Take care, and I hope you can read it now with the info I just gave you.

Go to preferences with control-k, then arrow down to accessibility. There
may be other choices there, too. In addition, here are the instructions for
opening PDF files outside the browser.

Go to the Edit menu (alt-e) and arrow up to the Accessibility submenu.
Select Set-up Assistant.
On page 5 of 5, the last page, of the Set-up Assistant is a check box
labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser." It should be unchecked
so that the web page is processed directly by Adobe Reader.

I use Open Book most of the time to read scanned docs as well as
security protected docs. Best for really long docs, too, as JAWS OCR
may take some time to load. Open Book wipes out all links, though. Why
JAWS OCR does not wipe out links is a bit of a mystery as they both have
the same or similar OCR engines. Open Book may add some treatment that
JAWS OCR does not.

Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe acrobat reader dc

2016-08-08 Thread Mike B.
Hi Jim,

Here you go:
Hi All,

For those new to Adobe Reader DC, try the settings changes below to see if
they help with its performance.

Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to explain the
consequences of
unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what they have to say.

2. Launch the Edit menu, Alt + E, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu
and open
it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up
Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the
last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on "Next"
in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to
the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and make
sure it

press enter. You can now close the program & give it a try on a PDF file.

You need to click on the link. However, if Adobe announces it is ready to
prepare the file for screenreader access, I press escape to stop that process
and then invoke the JAWS OCR function.

Maria, this is different from the previous query, and I can answer this one
fast. You should try FS's OCR feature: JAWS key+spacebar, then o. for the

Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe acrobat reader dc

2016-08-08 Thread Mr. Ed
This is what I do. The instructions are below. They are from FS.
Ed

Thank you for contacting Freedom Scientific technical Support.

I recommend you contact the Microsoft accessibility team for assistance
setting Adobe Reader as your default PDF reader instead of the Windows 10
PDF viewer. At this point, you can set Adobe Reader not to allow access in
web pages with the instructions below:

A. Using the Accessibility Set Up Assistant
When you launch a PDF the first time, the accessibility set up assistant
opens. If the accessibility wizard has already run, do the following to open
it:
1. Press ALT+E to open the Edit menu.
2. Press Y to select Accessibility submenu.
3. Press ENTER on Set Up Assistant. The first page of this five page dialog
box opens. The default choice is fine, press ENTER to move to the next page.
4. On the second page you can change things if you wish, but by default it
is OK. Press ENTER to move to page three.
5. On the third page you can change things if you wish, but by default it is
OK. Press ENTER to move to page four.
6. On the fourth page, if you want to use the list of links, list of
headings, and the JAWS find command so on to access long documents, change
the radio button from
"For large documents, only read the currently visible pages"
to
"Read the entire document at once."
If you do not make this change, in long documents JAWS only sees the links
and headings on the current page. Additionally, JAWS can only search the
current page with the JAWS find command. If you do select read the entire
document at once, it may take a few seconds longer to process large
documents, but it is worth it to be able to see the links and headings in
the entire document, or to search the entire document with the JAWS find.
7. Press ENTER to move to page five of the Set Up Assistant.
8. If the check box for Reopen documents to the last viewed page is checked,
you may want to uncheck this. It is a personal preference. TAB through until
you reach the check box for "Display PDF documents in the web browser," and
uncheck it.
9. Press ENTER to activate the Done button.

B. Additional changes in Adobe Reader XI preferences.
1. Press CTRL+K to open the Adobe Reader XI preferences.
2. In the Categories list on the left side of the dialog box, choose
Accessibility.
3. Press TAB to move to the item, Show Portfolios in Files mode (not checked
by default) - check this.
4. Press TAB to move back to the Categories list and choose Security
(Enhanced).
5. Press TAB to move to Enable Protected Mode at startup (checked by
default) - uncheck this.
6. Press TAB to move to the OK button, and activate it with the SPACEBAR.

NOTE: The option to view PDF documents in the browser is no longer found in
the Preferences. You must use the Set Up Assistant to find this

The Microsoft accessibility team can be reached at:

The links are indeed available in a JAWS OCR doc, according to tech
support, while if Open Book is used with the Freedom Import Printer they
are not. But, so far as I know, "empty document" only shows when a pdf
is scanned. So it appears that Adobe Reader 15 DC works as 11 did?

why is this important to me? I'm still running Adobe Reader 11 and
considering upgrading.

I believe this has to do with the Smart Screen feature, but

In any case, if you do a "save as" from the file menu, then

Do you have an Adobe icon on your desktop. You don't need to be in a
pdf to make the necessary changes. If you do not have the Adobe desktop

blank Adobe screen, go to it with the set up assistant.
