This seems to occur mainly with Microsoft Word documents that have been converted to a PDF file format. Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Question
In my work environment, I use ABBY FineReader Pro 12 to convert PDF files containing images of text to Microsoft Word format, which I then read. There's now a newer version of ABBYY FineReader, but I can't attest to its accessibility. With version 12, it's easy to convert a PDF file via the context menu in Windows File Explorer. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of wayne smith Sent: Saturday, September 9, 2017 7:13 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Question There are web services that will convert graphic pdfs and other non-text formats for free or with a optional donation. Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Question
Unfortunately, you'll have to either, get a subscription, or purchase the program outright. Not sure if they're still allowing the option to purchase the product outright, as I heard this option was going the way of the dinosaur, or not, but if they don't, you can always try an older version that someone may be selling, as they'll do the same thing. The only difference is that you won't get the same OCR technology as the new version, but you do what you can afford. Basically, you have to convert the PDF to text, html, word, or some other format more easily read with Jaws. My advice is HTML, as that one retains continuity better, and is easier to read. I think the free version used to have an option to convert the PDF to plain text, but I'm not sure if they've done away with that. In any case, you'll have to save the document to your computer first, then attempt the conversion. Do not leave the file in the temp folder when you convert it. Hope that helps. Many PDF files are readable without us having to do anything, except for making sure Adobe's accessibility settings are correct. If a PDF file isn't immediately readable, some programs enable you to perform optical character recognition (OCR) to create a new document that JAWS can read. Convenient OCR is such a program built in to recent versions of JAWS. However, as other listers have pointed out, it doesn't format well, which is one reason why people use the Kurzweil Reader and similar devices. Even then, some PDF files defy any kind of accessibility conversion, as Greg may be finding out and as I've encountered with the receipts my audio guy issued to me this week. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Justin Williams Sent: Saturday, September 09, 2017 9:17 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Question One more thing. Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe acrobat reader dc
Hi, If you get an empty document, that means that the PDF cannot be read with a screen reader until OCR is done on it. With JAWS, just press insert+space and press o then d, and JAWS will do OCR on the PDF document. With NVDA, there is a OCR add-on that will do the same thing. You need to download and install that OCR add-on for NVDA and then it will do OCR on the PDF. Most PDFs are not created to be read with a screen reader, because they are a picture of text instead of text itself. this is why OCR needs to be done on the PDF even with Adobe Products. Take care, and I hope you can read it now with the info I just gave you. Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe acrobat reader dc
I use Open Book most of the time to read scanned docs as well as security protected docs. Best for really long docs, too, as JAWS OCR may take some time to load. Open Book wipes out all links, though. Why JAWS OCR does not wipe out links is a bit of a mystery as they both have the same or similar OCR engines. Open Book may add some treatment that JAWS OCR does not. On 8/8/2016 3:50 PM, Mike B. wrote: Hi Maria, Another way to read 1 of those empty documents is with Openbook, if installed. This is what I do. The instructions are below. They are from FS. Ed Thank you for contacting Freedom Scientific technical Support. I recommend you contact the Microsoft accessibility team for assistance setting Adobe Reader as your default PDF reader instead of the Windows 10 PDF viewer. At this point, you can set Adobe Reader not to allow access in web pages with the instructions below: A. Using the Accessibility Set Up Assistant When you launch a PDF the first time, the accessibility set up assistant opens. If the accessibility wizard has already run, do the following to open it: 1. Press ALT+E to open the Edit menu. 2. Press Y to select Accessibility submenu. 3. Press ENTER on Set Up Assistant. The first page of this five page dialog box opens. The default choice is fine, press ENTER to move to the next page. 4. On the second page you can change things if you wish, but by default it is OK. Press ENTER to move to page three. 5. On the third page you can change things if you wish, but by default it is OK. Press ENTER to move to page four. 6. On the fourth page, if you want to use the list of links, list of headings, and the JAWS find command so on to access long documents, change the radio button from "For large documents, only read the currently visible pages" to "Read the entire document at once." If you do not make this change, in long documents JAWS only sees the links and headings on the current page. Additionally, JAWS can only search the current page with the JAWS find command. If you do select read the entire document at once, it may take a few seconds longer to process large documents, but it is worth it to be able to see the links and headings in the entire document, or to search the entire document with the JAWS find. 7. Press ENTER to move to page five of the Set Up Assistant. 8. If the check box for Reopen documents to the last viewed page is checked, you may want to uncheck this. It is a personal preference. TAB through until you reach the check box for "Display PDF documents in the web browser," and uncheck it. 9. Press ENTER to activate the Done button. B. Additional changes in Adobe Reader XI preferences. 1. Press CTRL+K to open the Adobe Reader XI preferences. 2. In the Categories list on the left side of the dialog box, choose Accessibility. 3. Press TAB to move to the item, Show Portfolios in Files mode (not checked by default) - check this. 4. Press TAB to move back to the Categories list and choose Security (Enhanced). 5. Press TAB to move to Enable Protected Mode at startup (checked by default) - uncheck this. 6. Press TAB to move to the OK button, and activate it with the SPACEBAR. NOTE: The option to view PDF documents in the browser is no longer found in the Preferences. You must use the Set Up Assistant to find this The Microsoft accessibility team can be reached at: 1-800-936-5900 -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Maria Campbell Sent: Monday, August 08, 2016 10:20 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe acrobat reader dc Doubtless, this issue has been addressed countless times. Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe acrobat reader dc
The links are indeed available in a JAWS OCR doc, according to tech support, while if Open Book is used with the Freedom Import Printer they are not. But, so far as I know, "empty document" only shows when a pdf is scanned. So it appears that Adobe Reader 15 DC works as 11 did? why is this important to me? I'm still running Adobe Reader 11 and considering upgrading. On 8/8/2016 12:32 PM, Adrian Spratt wrote: Maria, this is different from the previous query, and I can answer this one fast. Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Acrobat Reader DC
Do you have an Adobe icon on your desktop. You don't need to be in a pdf to make the necessary changes. If you do not have the Adobe desktop icon, search Adobe pdf or Adobe BC in Windows Search. Once you have a blank Adobe screen, go to it with the set up assistant. On 2/10/2016 6:53 PM, Alan Robbins wrote: Scorpio, Thanks for the suggestion but I cannot get to the file menu to save a copy.
