Re: frame problem

2001-04-27 Thread Shawn Zhu

Hey Shirley,
  So basically you never knew how to program in JSP (and maybe Java),
and your company just suddenly assigned you a JSP/Java project which
requires you to finish in 2 weeks? I am curious because, lets say if
you knew OOP, then it'll take your 1 week to learn JSP/Java. Okay, it
may take you a bit longer to get a hang of programming it. Because it
just seem like you are probably a HTML writer and the questions you
are asking is like asking someone write the JSPs for you. This is how
it appears to me, please enlighten me otherwise though. =)

Okay to answer your question. use HttpSession's setAttribute and
getAttribute.

Re: frame problem

2001-04-27 Thread Shirley Chen

I tried passing the hidden form values and it didn't work. Well, some
reasons for using frames are: 1. too much information needed to be
displayed. 2. each screen need have header, menu and main text area.
Sometimes, the menu item could be quite long, since the frames have
scrolling bar feature, we can use limited space to display long text.

How do I save variable in session object?

Re: frame problem

2001-04-27 Thread Justin Owens

One way would be to use hidden form values to pass since you are using
frames. Another method you can use placing your parameters in session
objects or even cookies. I am not sure of the coding for this as I am a
beginner with JSP development. Just one question, Why are you using frames.
There is more effective ways of laying out sites. Just curious though.

load http header with authentication data from a jsp

2001-04-27 Thread Karen McAdams <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have a directory of pdfs that I need to protect and the only way I can see
to do that is with htaccess.

Can I load the http header with auth. data once they pass login stage by
using a response/request object?

I don't want the user to have to authenticate again if they choose to
download a pdf. I would like them to only authenticate once and jsp
authentication only secures the jsp pages.

I tried using response.setheader() but this did not work.

Please advise how to do this or another method to protect the directory

Re: How to get URL of the original servlet after forwarding to aJ SP page?

2001-04-27 Thread Shawn Zhu

Oh yeah, that's right, I overlooked that fact. You are
right. It works when it was a sendredirect, not forward.

In that case, she can either use sendredirect, or stay with
request setAttribute (I wonder why she doesn't want to use this
method).

Re: How to get URL of the original servlet after forwarding to aJ SP page?

2001-04-27 Thread Albert Wong

Isn't this what the original poster asked for? The URI of the page
referring to the servlet?

aJSP page?

Actually I don't think that this will work. Here is why:
The client makes an HTTP request to the servlet which then uses the
RequestDispatcher to Forward the request to the jsp page. Because he is
using the
request dispatcher and not response.sendRedirect() there is no response back
to the
client from the servlet. This means that the header that the jsp has access
to is
the same header that the servlet had access to (only one HTTP request means
only
one HTTP header). Thus request.getHeader("referer") will return the URI of
the page
that referred the client to the servlet.

Why don't you want to set an attribute?

IF possible use include instead of forward and look at the request
attributes that are set in include. See 40 of the Servlet 2.2 spec.

pre-compiling JSP files

2001-04-27 Thread Martin, Janet

Hi, all:

We can use command line:
java weblogic.jspc .jsp
to precompile jsp files.

But it will generate java and classes file names encoded this way:
  some_95_page_95_name.java
  some_95_page_95_name.class
95 is the acii value for "_".

I guess we won't be able to pick up this name. Any ideas? I've post it on
various
news server and mailing list but only get people reporting the same problem,
no solution.

Thanks a lot.

Sam and Janet

This is the portion of the JSP file where it is happening:

The optionList is initialized with this code:

OptionList optionList = new OptionList();
pageContext.setAttribute("optionList", optionList,
PageContext.REQUEST_SCOPE);
optionList.initFromProperty("SHOW_BUDGET_OPTIONS");

The source for OptionList.java is

if (b != null)
select = b.getString(propertyName);
StringTokenizer tokenizer = new StringTokenizer(select,",|",false);
while (tokenizer.hasMoreTokens())
{
String token = tokenizer.nextToken();
addOption(token);
}
}
}

The source for OptionElement is:

public class OptionElement
{
String display = "";
String value = "";

this.display = display;
this.value = display;
}

OptionElement(String display, String value)

public String getDisplay()
{
return this.display;
}

public String getValue()
{
return this.value;
}
public String toString()
{
return (display + "|" + value);
}
}

Does anyone have any idea on what is causing the exception and how to fix
it?

Thanks,

Richard Yee

How to get URL of the original servlet after forwarding to a JSP page?

2001-04-27 Thread Thai Thanh Ha

 Hi all,

 I have forwarded from a servlet to a JSP page using
RequestDispatcher.forward(). In the JSP page, I want to get the original URL
(the URL of the servlet). And I don't want to use request.setAttribute() in
the servlet. Is there any way to get the servlet's URL from JSP page? I have
tried using request.getRequestURI() but it returns the URI of JSP page.

 Thanks in advance!

Re: Best Servlet Engine for NT, IIS and SQL Server

2001-04-27 Thread Doug Turner

Well, we've had good experience with ServletExec running on NT, but as an
NSAPI process, not an ISAPI process. It seems very stable, and the
performance on our (low-volume) site is good. Visit their site at
www.newatlanta.com for pricing.

Re: to reload a page once automatically

2001-04-27 Thread Charles Luo

hi, Joe,

Thank you for the suggestions. ;-)

However, it still does work as I expect.

I got two jsp pages, let's say page1.jsp and page2.jsp. At the first time, a
client will access page1.jsp and then go to page2.jsp after having made some
actions on page1.jsp. Now, there is a link(like: href="page1.jsp") linking
back to page1.jsp. If the client clicks the link, that will be fine;
however, if the client clicks BACK button on the navgation bar of his
browser, then page1.jsp wouldn't be changed accordingly, that is why I need
to refesh page1.jsp once in case a client clicks the BACK button.

More suggestions?

Cheers,
Charles

Setting the HTTP headers is a more effective method of controlling browser
caching
than using the  tag equivalents

* Some browsers do not treat the tags in the same way as the
equivalent HTTP header settings.

* On some browsers, the tag equivalents do not work when the
callPage() method is used to load a JSP file that contains the tags.

So try using:

<%
response.setHeader("Cache-Control", "No-cache");
response.setDateHeader("Expires", 0);
%>

Guys,

Just a quick question?

How can I force a page to be reloaded itself once whenever a client click
the 'back' button to the page on the navigation bar of a browser.

I have tried

but, it failed.

Do you have approriate javascript code? or any other solutions?

Thanks a lot!!!

Cheers,
Charles

JSP errors namespace not supported in Apache XALAN

I got a load of error from JSP to do with XALAN 2.0 and I am using the new JAXP
interface.
I upgraded to JAXP because the XSLTInputSource of the original XALAN 1.0
was broken it did not read data from java.io.InputStream.

Re: problem with catching exceptions from tags on the errorPage still remains

2001-04-27 Thread Justin Owens

Guys,

With JRUN, Allaire actually lets developers have it for free. Yesterday, I
downloaded it and installed it on my server for development. It is only in
production environments that it requires purchase. Note also, the JRUN
developers edition will only allow three concurrent connections.

This is a little off topic, but if you are looking for a good JSP IDE, I
have to recommend JRUN Studio 3.1. It has an integrated debugger for both
JSP's and Servelets, and it supports several version's of HTML (2.0, 3.0 and
4.0). It also supports Javascript1.2, ASP, CFML tags, CF Data and Flow
control, DTD Entities and Elements and IFML, RTML, SML1.0, Standard VML, and
VTML tags. It's produced by Allaire, and I've used it for about a year, and
really love it as a JSP/Servelet IDE.
You can download a 30 day trial version off of Allaire's web site.

yeah i´d love to. unfortunately i'm doing this jsp-stuff as a first

so: if anyone has some experiences with this topic or can show me a better
way of error-handling in this context i´d be very grateful.

hi folks.

i´m using my own taglib for generating dynamic tables. i´m also using the
errorPage-directive on all my pages (works fine).
the tags do all call a method getContent() in their doStartTag-method which
is used to build the html-content-string so when an error (e.g.
database-access) occurs in getContent() it throws a simple exception (incl.
message) which is caught in the doStartTag()-method. in this case i raise a
javax.servlet.jsp.JspTagException with the same message hoping it to be
registered on the page the tags are included in and then of course handled
by my error-page.

  public int doStartTag()
  throws javax.servlet.jsp.JspTagException {
...
try {
  getContent();
} catch (Exception e) {
  throw new javax.servlet.jsp.JspTagException(e.getMessage());
}
return SKIP_BODY;
  }

the error-page looks like this:

  <%@ page import="java.io.*,java.util.*" isErrorPage="true" %>

  Error

  Exception: <%= exception %>

  Exception-Message:

ByteArrayOutputStream ostr = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
exception.printStackTrace(new PrintStream(ostr));
out.print(ostr);

astonishingly the the 3rd page (which contains the tags) outputs all
content until the exception occurred and then just appends the output of
the error page like this:

  // normal output until exception occurs goes here...
  ...
  // the tag is called HERE

  Error

  Exception:

  Exception-Message:

why isn´t the exception forwarded to the error-page but the error-page
included in the other page instead?

thanx 4 your help in advance!

Re: to reload a page once automatically

2001-04-27 Thread Joe Blow

Setting the HTTP headers is a more effective method of controlling browser
caching
than using the  tag equivalents

* Some browsers do not treat the tags in the same way as the
equivalent HTTP header settings.

* On some browsers, the tag equivalents do not work when the
callPage() method is used to load a JSP file that contains the tags.

So try using:

<%
response.setHeader("Cache-Control", "No-cache");
response.setDateHeader("Expires", 0);
%>

Guys,

Just a quick question?

How can I force a page to be reloaded itself once whenever a client click
the 'back' button to the page on the navigation bar of a browser.

I have tried

but, it failed.

Do you have approriate javascript code? or any other solutions?

Thanks a lot!!!

Cheers,
Charles

 It depends on why you need to avoid a double submit. If
it's something trivial, then you can just use javascript.
If it's something important, then you can't rely on the
client. Detect the double submit on the server side. One
way is to include a hidden field with a serial number in
the form. If you get the same serial number twice, you
know something is wrong.

Re: Best Servlet Engine for NT, IIS and SQL Server

2001-04-27 Thread Celeste Haseltine

Sudheendra,

I use Allaire's JRUN Server 3.0, Professional Edition. It's about
$800.00/CPU and gives you a complier/interpreter for JSP's and Servelets.
If you need EJB's, you have to go up to their Enterprise Edition, and that
will run you about $4000/CPU, which I find is a little pricey. But, I do
like the ease of setting up, configuring, and using JRUN Server in
conjunction with IIS 4.0 on a NT Server. Don't waste your money on the
mid-range product, which comes with a Type 4 JDBC driver. It's about
$1800/CPU, but the driver is very poor compared to other Type 4 drivers I've
tested. NOr does it fully implement the extended JDBC API. I ended up
sending back the mid-range product, and purchasing the Professional Edition
to use with a third party Type 4 JDBC driver.

Ashish,

I must admit that I had not heard of the FreeTDS driver. I've already
purchased a Type 4 JDBC driver, but just out of curiousity, is FreeTDS a
type 4 driver, or a type 2? For my production internet application, I
needed a Type 4 driver, and one that included the extended API.

Re: Off Topic: Trim

2001-04-27 Thread Tarun Ramakrishna Elankath

Heres a more object oriented way to define the trim function (copied
straight from the JScript documentation available for download from MSDN).
Its works for JScript 5 and JavaScript 1.3

// Add a function called trim as a method of the prototype
// object of the String constructor.
String.prototype.trim = function()
{
// Use a regular expression to replace leading and trailing
// spaces with the empty string
return this.replace(/(^\s*)|(\s*$)/g, "");
}

// A string with spaces in it
var s = "leading and trailing spaces";

// Displays "leading and trailing spaces (35)"
window.alert(s + " (" + s.length + ")");

// Remove the leading and trailing spaces
s = s.trim();
// Displays "leading and trailing spaces (27)"
window.alert(s + " (" + s.length + ")");

We have had the same problems, and the safest way that we have found to
avoid it is after the user clicks the button that performs the submission we
disable any buttons that allow the form to be submitted.

Re: slightly off topic

2001-04-27 Thread Jay Burgess

Frightening?  Perilous?  :)

As you said, this question isn't JSP related, but I'll risk the wrath of
the stay-on-topic'ers to get a solution in the archives. Here are the steps
I recently followed to rebuild JServ after adding mod_ssl. (And note that
there might be other ways to do this, but it worked for me.)

(1) Create a file called configure.win32 in the directory
/sources/c. It should contain the following information (note
the paths will have to be adjusted to match your setup):

  PACKAGE=ApacheJServ
  VERSION=1.1.2
  APACHE_SRC=d:/servers/apache/src
  JAVA_HOME=d:/java/jdk1.2.2
  JSDK_HOME=d:/java/jsdk2.0
  EAPI=true

(2) In the /sources/c directory, modify "makefile.win32" as
follows:

   * Replace both instances of CoreR with Release.

   * Comment out the jserv.h build rule. For example:
 #jserv.h: autochange.exe
 # @autochange PACKAGE=$(PACKAGE) VERSION=$(VERSION) < jserv.h.in >
jserv.h

(3) Rebuild JServ:

 nmake /f Makefile.win32 @configure.win32

(4) Copy the newly built ApacheModuleJServ.dll to the
  directory.

 I am using Apache-JServ-gnuJSP combo on Windows-NT. It was working
perfectly now untl now but then we decided to go secure (https). I
integrated OpenSSL-mod_ssl with Apache. But now it gives a frightening
error:

 Loaded DSO modules/ApacheModuleJServ.dll uses plain Apache 1.3 API, this
module might crash under EAPI! . I tried to
compile the source, couldn't. I tried to search on the web for downloading
ApacheModuleJServ.dll compiled with -DEAPI, didn't get any.

 Can anybody help me out of this perilious situation. I am on a very

problem with catching exceptions from tags on the errorPage still remains

2001-04-27 Thread Steffen Morawietz

yeah i´d love to. unfortunately i'm doing this jsp-stuff as a first
approach to jsp in my company so we don´t have the appropriate ide... we
got jbuilder3 - not capable of jsp so i recently rely on notepad(!).
so: if anyone has some experiences with this topic or can show me a better
way of error-handling in this context i´d be very grateful.

have a nice weekend, folks!

Best to apply a JSP source code debugger like Jbuilder4 for this one.it
sounds hairy.

Subject: problem with catching exceptions from tags on the errorPage

hi folks.

i´m using my own taglib for generating dynamic tables. i´m also using the
errorPage-directive on all my pages (works fine).
the tags do all call a method getContent() in their doStartTag-method which
is used to build the html-content-string so when an error (e.g.
database-access) occurs in getContent() it throws a simple exception (incl.
message) which is caught in the doStartTag()-method. in this case i raise a
javax.servlet.jsp.JspTagException with the same message hoping it to be
registered on the page the tags are included in and then of course handled
by my error-page.

  public int doStartTag()
  throws javax.servlet.jsp.JspTagException {
...
try {
  getContent();
} catch (Exception e) {
  throw new javax.servlet.jsp.JspTagException(e.getMessage());
}
return SKIP_BODY;
  }

the error-page looks like this:

  <%@ page import="java.io.*,java.util.*" isErrorPage="true" %>

  Error

  Exception: <%= exception %>

  Exception-Message:

ByteArrayOutputStream ostr = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
exception.printStackTrace(new PrintStream(ostr));
out.print(ostr);

astonishingly the the 3rd page (which contains the tags) outputs all
content until the exception occurred and then just appends the output of
the error page like this:

  // normal output until exception occurs goes here...
  ...
  // the tag is called HERE

  Error

  Exception:

  Exception-Message:

why isn´t the exception forwarded to the error-page but the error-page
included in the other page instead?

thanx 4 your help in advance!

greetings

steffen

2001-04-27 Thread Nitin Tomer

Hi All,

I am on a very
short deadline. PLEASE HELP.

Thanx in advance

Please,

first of all, stop this thread since it's completely Off Topic.
This is a list about JSP, not Javascript

And if you reply, at least, be sure that what you write is correct.
Java surely has a trim funtion, it's JAVASCRIPT that misses it.
Can you give an example of what you think is missing in Java???

hi,

I see many of those functions which are present in the languages like
vbscript, vbasic, jscript, javascript but which are missing in Java. Every
one makes those functions for themself, my question is, Isn't there a Java
guru developer who has those functions in a class file or something? Which
he wants to share with us 'starters in Java'?

Or are there websites which have those libraries available?

Re: How to hide a user from seeing source code of web page...

2001-04-27 Thread Geert Van Damme

There is no solution.

Never ever rely on client side stuff for security (passwords,
validation...)

The javascript solution that somebody posted here might work for beginner
users. For advanced users it works the other way around. My reaction is:
'hey, what would be the reason they don't want me to look at the code? Let's
find out' ;-)
the only thing I have to do is turn of javascript and it works.
And remember: there's always Telnet ;-)

Re: How to count the number of active sessions?

One way of doing this is to create an
application-scope variable (an Integer in
getServletContext()) which contains the current number
of active sessions. You simply increment this when
somebody logs on and decrement this when he/she logs
off.

As an alternative to using an Integer object, you can
use a map (most likely a Hashtable) to store/delete
the session objects (HttpSession).

In any case, it might be helpful to create a 'cleanup'
program which would be invoked every time a session is
invalidated or had timed out. Check out about
HttpSession Binding Listener interface, esp. the
valueUnbound() method.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

It's only working with basic users...
You can go to the "display" menu of your browser and click on "view
source" ...

source
code of web page
(i.e by right clicking on page).I.e whenever he gives rigth click on

shouldn't see the
pop-up menu usually comes,instead he should be warned with a
message/alert
pop-up window
mentioning deneid message.

If anybody knows the procedure ,please let me know...(***preferably
