It seems more appropriate, from a user point of view.

Akonadi is not started if it's not used by anything. I think that by
default, if you configure your clocks (digital and analog), you have
to uncheck "show events" in the "Calendar" settings of each clock.
After that, for a light desktop, akonadi won't be started. No need to
tune anything else.

Don't know... again : I don't know how you update your ports tree, if
you switched for example from csup to portsnap, if you sometimes apply
patches to your ports tree, if you use area51... Maybe if you told us
what you mean by "manual intervention" to install the qt4-gui port,
that would help us understand something.

*But please* run "portsnap fetch extract" so that we all know you have
a clean ports tree ! After that, try to install or update things and
let's see how it goes. And as a last resort, if the problem doesn't
come from a combination of options you defined in ports or in
make.conf, you can always wipe your installed ports (with pkg_delete)
and then /usr/local/ (keep your precious config files) and there
should be no problem installing kde4. But first, let's see what the
clean ports tree changes to see what was corrupted, instead of wiping
everything windows-like (or maybe no-clue-like would be more
appropriate).

Cheers

What do you mean by "manual intervention" ? Because I don't see
anything in which could be related in :
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/devel/qt4/files/Makefile.options
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/x11-toolkits/qt4-gui/

>
> well, qt-gui just got an upgrade and the above file was pulled in by it

> now the problem is gone

As someone suggested, can the problem be caused by a corrupted ports
tree ? I don't know how you update your ports tree and if you switched
from one tool to another, and sorry but I don't have the time to read
again all the mails from the thread. I'd suggest running "portsnap
fetch extract" (not update) so that all your ports tree is replaced by
a good copy. Because, maybe, an insignificant update to qt4 or qt4-gui
replaced the (bad) files you had in /usr/ports/x11-toolkits/qt4-gui/
or /usr/ports/devel/qt4/.

As for upgrading ports, I now use "portmaster -adw" and I'm happy with
it. Of course, I also read UPDATING.

In my case, the last few KDE updates went flawless with portmaster and
careful UPDATING reading. I don't see how you can have problems
installing kde4 on a clean machine with a fresh ports tree and no
ports installed, as a last resort. But removing and then reinstalling
all your ports would consume time, so we try to help you just repair
the broken ports you have.

How can someone "get" it without seeing technical facts / logs ?
Saying something like "the upgrade process fails because of the
failing install process" won't get you anywhere. I didn't see many
error messages / results of commands like pkg_info or other logs in
this thread.

I had the same problem, the following cmake directive is wrong :

set_source_files_properties(util/kshareddatacache.cpp
PROPERTIES COMPILE_FLAGS ${KDE4_ENABLE_EXCEPTIONS})

I think KDE4_ENABLE_EXCEPTIONS is empty, and the
set_source_files_properties complains that the number of arguments is
wrong.

I deleted those lines to be able to build kdelibs.

More simply, just comment out or remove the CC=/usr/local/bin/gcc46
line which should be in your /etc/make.conf, and do the same for the
rest of the configuration you used for gcc46.

I think that your gcc46 setup is at fault.

If this works, you can still use gcc46 for all ports but some with a test like :
.if !${.CURDIR:M/usr/ports/devel/kdebindings4-perl-perlqt*}
CC=/usr/local/bin/gcc46
[put here the rest of the config you use for gcc46 like CXX and CPP]
.endif

Thanks !

I've been using KDE 4.8.2 from area51 with the patch from Matthew
Rezny for a few days :
http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/kde-freebsd/2012-April/012861.html

With your patch, I can also install qmake4, and all of the dependent
ports seem to build and work fine.

Can't comment on that... I only use the following in /etc/make.conf
(in a couple of .if not pasted here to avoid ports failing with
clang), as advised on the wiki :
.if !defined(CC) || ${CC} == "cc"
CC=clang
.endif
.if !defined(CXX) || ${CXX} == "c++"
CXX=clang++
.endif
.if !defined(CPP) || ${CPP} == "cpp"

It solves the regression I reported on kde@ when trying to build Qt

Thanks. I can also try again with 4.8.1 as soon as you say area51 is
ready for testing :)

That did it, now vlc accepts "--no-one-instance", and phonon-vlc works
without patch.
According to "vlc -H", "--no-one-instance" is the default behavior, do
you want me to submit a patch for the phonon-vlc port to not add this
argument at all in the WITHOUT_DBUS case ?

Much thanks to both of you for your work on KDE and FreeBSD.

On the 2011/10/13, avilla said about the phonon xine backend "we're
not going to remove it, don't worry. ;)". I'm not blaming anyone, I
was just surprised to see the phonon-xine backend flagged BROKEN so
soon after.

> If phonon-vlc crashes for you, I suggest building it with debug symbols

> a try.

I just wonder why it doesn't crash for others... the problem seems to
be specific to the FreeBSD vlc port, or it depends on the OPTIONS I
(un)selected.

With an up-to-date multimedia/vlc and multimedia/phonon-vlc, when
setting the vlc backend under kde multimedia settings, phonon says the
vlc backend can't be initialized. The reason is that it tries to use
an unsupported vlc argument : '--no-one-instance'.

>From my ~/.xsession-errors :
vlc: unknown option or missing mandatory argument `--no-one-instance'
Try `vlc --help' for more information.
PHONON-VLC ESC[07;31m[FATAL__]ESC[00;39m libVLC:
PHONON-VLC ESC[07;31m[FATAL__]ESC[00;39m Phonon::VLC::vlcInit: Failed

I patched phonon-backend-vlc-0.4.1/vlc/libvlc.cpp to not add this
argument (which doesn't seem to be used under Mac OS X), reinstalled
the phonon-vlc port, and now it's better. At least I can play audio
and video files under Dolphin's preview, and amarok does not crash at
startup but I've got a nearly 2s delay when stopping playback with the
fade out option (but there's no volume decrease) and also when pausing
and seeking. I will miss phonon-xine :) RIP.

Here's my vlc options file for the record, maybe the lack of
"--no-one-instance" argument depends on one of these options :

[kde-freebsd] phonon, xine, what to do...

2012-02-28 Thread Olivier Smedts
Hello,

I've been a happy user of phonon-xine and libxine for quite some time,
but with the update of libxine to 1.2.1, phonon-xine refuses to
compile :
===>>> This port is marked BROKEN
===>>> deprecated upstream; refuses to build with libxine 1.2.x

So, what is recommended for now, and what will be recommended for KDE
4.8 (if different) ? Every time I try phonon-vlc it crashes (sorry for
the lack of details, if you want more I'll need to test again) and I'd
like to avoid gstreamer and its plugins, if possible.
What about WITH_QT_PHONON, is it still deprecated for KDE4 users ?

Besides that, speaking of area51, do you think KDE and Qt 4.8 are
ready for testing ? (by testing I mean that I expect problems and will
be happy to report them but don't want to crash my entire system :) )

Thanks !

Bumping on this "problem" too. "Remote URL Changer Notifier" has been
disabled for me for ages, and so is the DNS-SD service discovery, but
I see popups of what seems to be Upnp shares at startup and when
they're up.

The good news is that our CMake 2.8.6 should already have the
integrated automoc functionality.

So, is there a patch I can try to replace automoc with the equivalent
functionality in cmake for our ports tree ?

Are you sure ? I compiled all my qt4 ports with clang except
qt4-webkit because it was failing. So I set up an exception for it in
make.conf, and then it compiled fine (with base gcc).

Have you tried (or can you try) "portmaster x11/kdelibs4" or
"portmaster x11/kde4" ? It should update all the kdelibs dependencies,
if needed (here, it seems to be textproc/soprano). It will check what
should be done, and then prompt you with the ports to upgrade/install.

Something like "pkg_delete kde\*" then "cd /usr/ports/x11/kde4" is not
a good way to upgrade, because it doesn't guarantee that kde's
dependencies are up-to-date.

Cheers

I still use it as my main phonon backend. That's the only one just
working, correctly. vlc backend is buggy as hell and makes phonon
crash, and gstreamer backend installs too much cr... dependencies. And
it doesn't read the flac files I can read with the xine backend
(default gstreamer install as a dependency, no special plugins
installed).

Nothing technical here, just saying xine backend is still a good option :)

Do you need testers for 4.7.2, or is area51 waiting for more plist
fixes before the next CFT ? I'm currently using 4.7.1 and I'm quite
happy with its improvements. It feels more stable than ever (just
using the DE, no PIM, no semantic desktop).

Do you think your work will be merged in the ports tree before the
freeze ? It could be really interesting to avoid the usual major ports
update just after the release.

Thanks for all

Thanks !
And I don't know if that's thanks to your rc.d script rework, but now
I don't have to set LANG in this script any more. Before that, my kde
session was only half-localized without LANG in the rc.d/kdm4 script.

> is kde working decently without hal?

Decently, yes ! Not a single problem, really ok for my usage, but
please note that :
- I choose my mixer with hw.snd.default_unit, without hal I only have
"OSS default output" as device in phonon (kmix still displays all the
mixers). Oh and, btw, when I was using hald I didn't have "default" in
my sound devices.
- I don't mount filesystems (cd, usb key) as a user from my kde
session, I only mount from a root prompt
- In order to use k3b, I have to "onestart" hald, but it can be done
after the kde session is open

I look forward to test your devd solid backend as soon as it's possible !

I've got a better experience with KDE SC 4.6.1 (than 4.6.0). No
akonadiserver crash dumps with nepomuk/strigi and all indexing/tagging
stuff disabled (it was the case since 4.5.X). Feels fast, quite light
(200MB active after opening my desktop session), responsive (also
related to the Xorg update). The only thing I had to do was to edit
"/usr/local/kde4/etc/rc.d/kdm4" in order to remove the recently
introduced hal-waiting loop. I don't use hal...

Thanks for all the hard work !

Well, simply said : it works, there was only a small modification in
the port's Makefile (s/MAKE_JOBS_SAFE/MAKE_JOBS_UNSAFE/). Apart from
that, it applies cleanly, compiles, and runs ok.

If you don't want to wait KDE 4.4.0 to reach the ports tree, then you
can use the additional area51 ports on top of a fresh ports tree.
Please read the original CFT message :

Now you can get KDE SC 4.4 with a svn checkout:

svn co http://area51.pcbsd.org/trunk/area51/PORTS
svn co http://area51.pcbsd.org/trunk/area51/KDE
svn co http://area51.pcbsd.org/trunk/area51/Tools/

now try:
sh Tools/scripts/portsmerge
sh Tools/scripts/kdemerge

Please read carefull /usr/ports/UPDATING-area51

I'll reply to my own message.
multimedia/phonon uses KDE4_BRANCH=unstable but it's then overriden by
the mk includes.
Maybe bsd.kde4.mk should use "?=unstable" like for KOFFICE2_BRANCH.

Thanks for the reply. I can also use

know if there was a quicker way for me to test 4.4.0 in a tinderbox,

According to the last commits, KDE 4.4 RC3 is available, but not for
use yet (only the distfiles were updated since RC2).

Same problem with cdrecord or cdrkit, same problem with k3b-1.69.0.a4 :

scsidev: '/dev/cd0'
devname: '/dev/cd0'
scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2
/usr/local/bin/cdrecord: Invalid argument. Open by 'devname' not
supported on this OS. Cannot open SCSI driver.
/usr/local/bin/cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'.
Make sure you are root.
/usr/local/bin/cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try
'cdrecord dev=help'.

cdrecord command:

using cdrkit :

cdrecord
---
scsidev: '/dev/cd0'
devname: '/dev/cd0'
scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2
/usr/local/bin/wodim: Invalid argument.
Cannot open SCSI driver!
For possible targets try 'wodim --devices' or 'wodim -scanbus'.
For possible transport specifiers try 'wodim dev=help'.
For IDE/ATAPI devices configuration, see the file README.ATAPI.setup from
the wodim documentation.

cdrecord command:
---
/usr/local/bin/wodim -v gracetime=2 dev=/dev/cd0 speed=10 -sao

I was able to blank and burn an iso image when launching the commands

I "fixed" it with a "portupgrade -f kdebase kdelibs qt4-imageformats"
(I picked those ports quite randomly). Don't know what happened
because all my ports were installed after jpeg-7 update. Broken by png
update maybe ?

I just noticed I've got the same problem, and reinstalled all the
ports from scratch after the jpeg, qt4 and kde4 update. The KDE's
wallpaper chooser says "0x0" for most images sizes, and I also lost
the album thumbnails in amarok. I'll investigate that later, that was

Maybe a problem for qt like there was for gtk and jpeg-7
(http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=588740).

I'm running amarok 2.1.1 from area51 (with added dependencies
taglib-extras and qtscriptgenerator) and it's great. Less buggy than
2.0.x. I hope those 3 ports will be committed soon.

[kde-freebsd] Thanks for KDE 4.3.0 and Qt 4.5 !

2009-08-04 Thread Olivier Smedts
Big thanks to the FreeBSD KDE team for such a reactive update after
the official release !

I've been testing it for few hours, using area51. It works great.

Are there any differences between area51 and what have been committed
to the ports repository ?

The "s/MAKE_JOBS_SAVE/MAKE_JOBS_SAFE" fix should also be applied for
"devel/qt4-qvfb/Makefile", "textproc/qt4-xmlpatterns/Makefile" and
"databases/qt4-sql/Makefile".

Cheers,
Olivier
