2018-06-30 Thread GARY ROBISON via KRnet
Larry

I tried the mesh between two gaskets back in the 70's on my car. Remember when
Auto gas was getting so high. Turned out it was a great place for ice to build
up under the carb. Blocked it so bad all it would do was idle then it would
stall out as the ice melted and drained down the manifold. Great thought - bad
idea. My screen was about window screen size.

Even tried to energize it with 10 meg resistor running from the coil !! ION
SPLITER or somethingwonder I still here...

Subject: Re: KR> what to look for when inspecting/buying a KR project

I do appreciate the replies. just to be clear what I'm after, I am ONLY
interested in a KR1 single place, original style, less than 50% built. I know a
lot of discussion takes place here and its easy to forget who is into what, but
I have been talking about replicating Ken's original KR1 all along, except for
some sensible improvements to enhance reliability/safety. And it will be
tri-geared. To that goal, I have purchased a set of new KR1 plans.
If I can find a stock KR1 boat stage that would fantastic and they do
occasionally come up.
My question was what to look for in terms of construction detail that may
indicate a poor build, especially indications that the woodwork cannot be used.

KR> SPARS and extended wing span

2014-04-16 Thread Gary Robison
Larry here is a picture of my spar caps and the
2 foot pieces scarfied on.

1 foot for the 2s 1 foot extended

With the scarfs running in opposite directions and
the spruce ply web covering both sides I think
this will be plenty strong. The original use foam
and a couple of layer of glass.

As for the center section spars, along with the
AS5048 airfoil being much thicker when I made
up my spar caps the wood I used was 1/4
thicker than called for in the plans (2" top and bottom)
mine is 2.25" instead of sawing it off I incorporated
into the spar for strength (and a little extra weight)
and then shortened the vertical pieces to maintain the
8.19" over all spar height.

I think it would hold up a tank or at least a Microbus!

a RV-1 canopy and make it a slider. This is
a KR 1.5 Ss with a 28' span. The Corvair engine
is finished setting on a stand at the end of shop.

This template is for a Sterwart Headwind I
saved from the junk man it set seven years

KR> Fixing a mistake

2012-12-17 Thread Gary Robison
I made a wrong cut on my rear
main spar (AS airfoil)

The spar was to be cut 4.77"
with a 12 deg cut on top and a 9 deg
on the bottom.

I made the 9 degree cut the wrong direction

  this /---/instead of /---\

I had read some place that if you had cut your
spars for the old airfoil and wanted to use the new one
you could glue up another sparcap and recut it.

To repair mine the piece would be about 1/4" and taper
to 0"

Do you think this would work ? there would be a 1/4"
not supported by the ply shear.

Me? my GR-1.5Ss "Hair-Trigger" (KR super modified) is approaching

I have a KR1 project that I started before I was run over by a drunk
in a very large pickup truck. And as you can imagine the medical went
away as soon as they started writing prescriptions for pain
medication. And now I have this very nice KR1 project that has the
same stretch as the KR2S in my shop that needs to find a new builder.
The fuselage is done as are the spars. And there is other stuff that I
bought that goes with the project, Way to much stuff to list. It just
needs to find a builder that wants to save himself allot of money and
time. So if you know anyone that is interested A Thousand bucks takes
it all. And if I do say so myself the construction is superb.

I will send you the original gear legs as soon as I can.

Getting ready to apply the plywood to my frame.

I think 1/4 inch staples are going to work but they
do not go in very deep. What size did you use?

Yes, I have a nylon string under them and that
seems to work well when pulling one side out.

I hate to clutter up the KRnet with this but I just have
to announce it.

I retired this year on May 1st

I have under construction a 24 X 40 heated/air conditioned

Today I called and gave up my credit card number for a pile
of spruce and plywood.

Eight years I have be looking at the KR

Four years ago I bought the plans.

Two years ago I collected 3 Corvair engines.

Let the gluing and sanding begin.

KR> Foam cutting large scale

2011-01-03 Thread Gary Robison
Mark

No, not too crazy!!!

Don't you have to be on edge to
do this anyway?

Besides with your flair for the new and untried
an easier way to sculpt your airfoil is in there.

That is one reason I pick the KR. So much
you can do to your own music

My dihedral will start inside the fuselage and
I want to cut/sand it all at one time if I can get
away with it. I just do not want to ruin allot of
foam. End up patching and filling.

Having to wait until spring to start my barn/garage to build in,
and with holes wearing through my plans from leafing,
ones mind wanders. Besides, I think it will work out, plus
others could borrow the machine. It would scale easily.

KR> Foam cutting large scale

2011-01-02 Thread Gary Robison
That is interesting Paul

Maybe next time around ask the fellow about the wire.

I could cut smaller blocks and glue it all together or
glue it all together - paste some .25" thick .25" under sized
airfoil templates on the ends - set the wash out - and let the
wire do the work following the templates.

And here I thought I would be the first one to do this .

2011-01-02 Thread Gary Robison
OK OK I do not post here muchat all ...hardly ever...A LURKER
I have started the Corvair engine project.11 months ago it went idle
I need to get that up and going again.
Because? WellMy excuse is lack of a place to build...I guess...
As soon a the spring weather dries up I will have a barn built 24 X 40
and get started. Yes I will.((I will !!)) Oh really why? I will
retire in April and have
no excuses after that.full time KR/Corvair.

Now, why I am here today. I have built many model aircraft wings out of
foam.
Much beyond 4 feet hot wiring will start to sag and become useless.

I just came across a wire that is rough with a diamond coating. A light came
on.

What if one where to use this wire, in a frame make it reciprocate and
slowly
draw it (like a hot wire) through the foam. Yes a perfect smooth contour no
sanding .
Or make a band saw type arrangement two pulleys spring loaded..maybe

Will the wire load up and not cut? I don't know. I am asking for you
thoughts
Thought I would order some and see what I could make out of it. It's not
expensive.

KR> Your Thoughts on my Thoughts

2008-10-28 Thread GARY ROBISON
Hi Ron

If you imagine the dihedral bend in the front spar( "5)
beginning in the middle of the stub spar not at the WAF
which is what I want to do the bend will be 5/8 or
.625 the height of the longeron when it passes that
point (15" from center a 30" overall width) no sweat
there it will fit nicely. The end of the spar will end up
right where it is supposed to, in the outer rib.

The rear spar instead of beginning it's forward travel
at the WAF ( destroying the area you would need for
more flap area) begins at the point it exits the fuselage.
It will end up at the exact same point in the outermost
rib, with the exact same twist. The rear spar will also
pick up it's dihedral bend inside the fuselage not at the
WAF it will need a just a tad more room as it needs
to raise 5 5/8" it will be.7" as it passes the lower
longeron. I will need to shave .1" off the bottom of the
spar where it rests on the floor of the fuselage. I do
not believe that will hurt its structural strength.

All this is to get rid of the dog leg at the rear of
the wing so I can add a bunch more flap area. The trailing
edge will be strait as an arrow from the fuselage to the
wing tip. Holding the 5" front dihedral and 5 5/8" in
the rear spar.

Not near as complicated as it sounds.

And yes I will loose a small amount of wing area, very small.

I hope this give you a better picture of what I had in mind.

I will require a dihedral

I don't know what you are talking about here. The rear spar is NOT swept

KR> Your Thoughts on my Thoughts

2008-10-27 Thread GARY ROBISON
Hello all,

I have had my plans for a few weeks now and I am chewing on some ideas

that need to be addressed before I get started with the 88.

I really like the idea Mike suggested on his comment page.

Mikes thought was to incorporate the dihedral bend for the spars "inside"
the fuselage.

Find it here: http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kopinion.html#bent

My thoughts are to do exactly that only not cut the caps into quarter inch
strips, but to steam

and bend them with a jig holding the proper angle until set. Do them both at
the same time,

sitting on top of each other, they would be exact complements. Once the
vertical spreaders

and shear ply was glued on it should be as strong as the strait spar ever
was.

That covers the front spar, the rear one is going to be a little more work.
I will require a dihedral

bend and one that sweeps it forward. My thought is to put the dihedral bend
inside and make the

bend forward just as it leaves the fuselage. Again top and bottom at the
same time in the same jig

one on top of the other.

Talking to a few wood workers they seem to think the small angles would be a
easy to do.

They suggested I practice on some clear tighter grain pine to get a feel for
the small spring back that will occur.

Why?

For very little extra work I will be able to extend the flap area / sand and
cover

the wing as one unit / it will look super!!!

Now I need to keep the WAF's for transport. This means I need to come up
with the airfoil template for

those points along the spar. I am not sure how to produce it? Plus they
will be slightly different on each side

of the WAFs . "here I need some help". If you have an idea ... Light
the way for me.

I am using the new airfoil with taller spars AS5048 and a AS5045 at the tip.
Not sure if I am going to use the

extra length of 2s wing I need to think a bit more on that (comments
welcome)

I will be stretching the fuselage 11" longer than the 2s but it will be
single place 30" at the shoulders.

Long time ago (the third life time I think) I had a program that I paid a
bunch of money for that would

lay out a model aircraft wings and airfoils. I still have it but it is on
floppy ( have none in this machine)

and I think you could only unzip it 3 times. It would do full size airfoil
templates. Maybe something like

that would work here.

You comments / criticisms (screams ignored)

What do you mean IF you were to build a KR?
You already are building a KR your doing it right now as you read this.
Start any part of it. Just get going.
Send for the plans. Just to drool over.
Buy an engine.(Corvair)(VW)
Your grandson will soon be old enough to help.(bet he can make great engine
sounds!)
Lurking is good I lurk too.
When the flyers type

John . YOU can do this and you will enjoy it.

Get yourself Wynne's book and a Corvair shop manual (Ebay)
You will need the number of Clark's Corvair (parts)

If you do not wish to do any wild horse power increasing changes you can
handle it!

The only real tools you may have to buy or borrow are torque wrenches.

Keep it clean inside and out and you'll do fine. Lot'a help on here too!

Just a little bigger smile when you pull back on the stick.

I have two dissembled right now watching the 5th bearing crowd for any news.

(didn't we all do rambler heads?)

Check out Mark Langford's webpages also good info there also

I`m a long time lurker and a short time member. I have seen the links for W
Wynne Corvair college, and seen the links to the many members with Corvair
engines. My question is this: how difficult is it to convert/rebuild a
Corvair engine if you are not an A&P or an engineer? My main engine
experience is replacing head gaskets on my high school Rambler station
wagon, (I`m so embarrassed!!!) about a hundred years ago. I do woodwork and
I work with my hands, but not on engines. Is this something I can tackle
myself or is it something I should farm out if I were to build a KR?

BTW- I`m the guy that was chasing my 3 yr. old grandson around at the Kr
gathering at MVN. :)

I was wondering if anyone know a Dave Baker?. A few years ago he came up
with a strobe light made from a Kodak camera , it was simple, I would like
to make one just to try it out . If you should know him or have a copy of
his drawing I would like a copy..
