KR> Full Diehl gear schematic

Bob, you seen a really nice guy, there seems to be some confusion between you

In defence of Steve he has been great to me over the years, my orders are
usually done on line and I do like yo ring him to confirm but that is for s
friendly chat. But he can be hard to catch u for a chat , he is always busy,
but he had always returned my phone calls ( to Australia) not a bad effect.

KR> BRS can be a concern.

2016-05-12 Thread Phillip Matheson
Please follow the fitting instructions of the shute.
I have recently seen one that had the unit mounted to the firewall, and
attached to the 4 engine mount attachments points. My (2 cents only only),
but at what speed would this only tear out the firewall and save the engine
only? and if it worked, the KR would descend tail first??? The instructions
clearly say the aircraft should impact on its wheels to reduce the landing
force, and attached to the spars for safety.

Also is has to blast through a layer of fibre glass of the top cowl. Again
what could a rocket do when discharged under the cowl, and unable to get out
to open, and again, what would it do to the firewall attachment?
Instructions say it should blast through a fabric cover that is detachable
from the rest of the material.

Thankfully, This aircraft can no longer endanger anyone, it was taken off
the register.

My Diehl nose wheel has developed a violent shimmy between 20 and 40 Kts. I
managed to drip some oil from the engine onto the strut. The oil ran down
and got into the swivel joint and lubricated the nylon washer. Now it does
not have the proper friction. So, have to take the swivel joint apart,
clean off the oil and re-adjust the friction upon reassembly. This KR might
be turning into a ford.

KR> 15 year life on Control Cable and fittings

2015-04-02 Thread Phillip Matheson

Hi guys
CASA has released an AD in Australia limiting control cable life to 15
years, this seem to include building time on some fittings.

I have added the AD number and link below.

Does this indicate the parts need a Date of Manufacture stamped on them from
now on?

Phil Matheson

AD/GEN/87
This Airworthiness Directive became effective on 1 February 2015 and will
apply to all the amateur built
aircraft fitted with the stated stainless steel cable hardware. Please read
the AD carefully to determine
how/if it applies to your aircraft. Mike Horneman has written an excellent
article on this subject which will
appear in the next Airsport edition.
Although the AD mandates replacement based upon ?time in service?, the SAAA
recommends that you
consider the circumstances carefully if you project had a long gestation
period. If not properly stored, the
damaging corrosion can be still be occurring whilst your project is under
construction.

KR> KR1 LSA QUALIFICATION

2015-03-27 Thread Phillip Matheson
In Australia, The stall speed for LSA is in the LANDING configuration. full
flap etc.

Phil.

Easy to meet that constraint, the stall speed is the one you need to be
concerned about. And it has to be "clean", no lift devices required. You
can have them, but they cannot be used to test the stall speed.

Gross weight will probably be the thing you most have to keep in check to be
able to meet that requirement.

another mates Pacer. we do 3 point landings, and very difficult to see. But
he says as we taxi out, this is the position attitude for landing, just set
it up in the taxi attitude and it will and it's self.
But now I love it the tail wheel. All I be to do is get off my lazy ar$#
and finish my KR2SS.

Thanks again

KR> Brake Bleeding

2015-01-23 Thread Phillip Matheson
Subject: Re: KR> Brake Bleeding

I do mine from the bottom up using a squirt can. Just put towels near the
top vent. Connect and squirt.

I also use a pressure gun from the bottom, but I found a small bolt that
fitted the fill hole in the master cylinder, I drill this through the centre
of the bolt, pushed a clear plastic tube over the end of the bolt, then
screwed in the top of master Cylinder, then if you over fill , the fluid
will travel up the tube so you can see it, then just remove the gun from the
bleeder and let it drain back down till the fluid is at the required level
in the master cylinder.

NO MESS to clean up.

KR> KR-1S build planning

2015-01-21 Thread Phillip Matheson
I know that there are no official KR-1S plane, but I call it that way to
signify that I plan to modify a KR-2S (plan is on order through Steve) to a
single seater

Hi James.

Do not be too hard on yourself, we know how you feel.

The plans well explain how to set up the fuselage. You do not really need a
jig, just a flat table long enough and wide enough to hold the fuselage plus
tape measures, plumb bob and squares etc.
Check out Mark L web page as you most likely have, HEAPS of info and listed
to find.

You would only need to work out how wide to want it and adjust the plan
width to suit yourself if using the KR2s plans

Good luck with it all.

We can help if you need it.

KR> Flaps versus belly board versus spoilers

I have been using wider flaps since 2007. they work very well. I really use
full flap.

The bottom few photos will show the flap hinges I made.

Phil Matheson

--
On my KR I planned on using flaps, but extending them all the way to the
aft spar instead of just the 6-8" narrow flaps KRs normally have. The
reason the chord of the flaps was so small is to keep them from dragging
on the ground with the short retract gear, but with modern KRs with long
gear legs there is no reason no to extend the chord. I don't think
anyone has tried that before and I don't know why. I also had my center
section wing stubs extended a foot or so on both sides so I think they
would have been very effective

2014-05-31 Thread Phillip Matheson via KRnet
Mark Langford wrote on web page
Note how I had to mount the sticks entirely to the lower spar cap. If I
could do it over again,
I'd add extra spruce blocks inside the spar on 8" centers for the job, and
leave the caps alone.
That's what I did for the center stick, but that doesn't help me now.

--

Mark
I am planning the following and wanted to run it buy you for mounting my
controls to middle of the spar. with no blocks pre-fitted to hold control
when building.

I thought of using say 1 inch dowel, drilled in lathe to required mounting
bolt size, then drill the spar webbing all the way through as you would the
WAF , then drill 1 inch hole in one side of spar webbing. insert the 1 inch
dowel, epoxy in place, bolt it with cheap bolts till dry, then sand the
dowel down flat with webbing, repeat in the other three bolt locations, then
bolts are tighten trough the dowel and not squashing the webbing, taking the
place of the spruce blocks.
I hope that make sense.

To me that would be very strong .

KR> Adding drag

2013-12-04 Thread Phillip Matheson
What?? KR's need all the drag they can get when on final and still going
fast. Jim Morehead put a huge bellyboard on his with a really solid
extension/retraction mechanism.
--

I have a more or less standard KR2,TRI-gear 100HP reduction VW type 4. I
have made my flaps similar to the plans but wider on the inboard wing only.

It is GREAT, I hardly use the 3rd stage, I have NO problems slowing it down,
I do not know much about the tail dragger KR but I just hold the nose up
or( trim nose up)and use power to get to the runway, or almost stall it onto
the ground, fantastic. I touch down about 45 to 50 kts. I now have over 500
hours ( as Maxwell Smart says, " and Loving it")

I do not know what all the fuss is about???

I guess the tail dragger would have problems stopping the tail wheel hitting
to early. But the tri-gear is great to land. High cross winds not problems.

Maybe you just have to look down the side and pretend it is a P40 or Mustang
with a high nose landing??

All the best, just fly safe.

That is interesting idea, In Australia the CASA (Civil Aviation Safety
Authority) never liked the one bolt per each WAF( four bolts at side) I only
have two 3/8 bolts a side with a thick walled 4130 spacer and the lot is
locked up together. They also stopped us using the last two inches of the
CofG which I think is now a national excepted idea for extra safety.

I too like John Martindale use the gap to run my pushrods to the ailerons
( thanks John for that idea) The only cable I use in my KR2 is for rudder.
The KR2SS I am building now may differ and thinking of running elevator

G?day All ? As a first time user of this page and a new owner of a KR2

retractable taildrager I am searching for information on the KR2 canopy.
I have found it comfortable but not visually stimulating sitting in the
cockpit of a KR2 and would hope that someone has a suggestion to at least
raise the canopy to increase the seating height. In my opinion raising the
canopy some hundred millimeters (four inches) would be around the mark. I am
open to all suggestions or direction.

There are two guys making "fifth bearings" for the Corvair. Dan Weseman
makes $1000 version that seems to work, and it's shown at
http://fly5thbearing.com/. Roy Sarafinksy makes a more integrated bearing
that bolts to each case half and splits with the engine cases, for about
$1800, and it's shown at http://www.roysgarage.com/new/Welcome.html . I was
planning to make one like you describe for the Type 4 VW that I was going to
use, and am still kicking it around for the Corvair. There's a Corvair
engine for aircraft list similar to this one (run by me) that can be joined
following the instructions at the top of http://www.corvaircraft.org/ , and
a lot more on the CorvAircraft engine conversion at

full length flap on the Mustang II

I modified my inboard flaps so, if I needed to I could join them together
under the fuselage, I placed the hinge line lower then the bottom of the
fuse. I got the idea from the Mustang II as well. But my flaps work so well
that I seldom use full flap.

I just took the standard flap, change the hinge system, moved the controls
away from rear spa and hinged them off the rear spar, so they have about 12
inch cord.

reduction fitted to flywheel end of the engine, it has a VW engines design
alternator built into the other end of the engine mounting brackets.

This has always been my question when using car engines in aircraft. Take my
VW type 4. It has a gear reduction and the engine RPM reaches 4000 = 100 HP

If you check the Corvair link http://carnut.com/specs/gen/vair60.html It
states the RPM required to reach 110 HP or more is 4000 to 4500.
The corvair is of course 6 cylinder, but till only 110 hp or so depending on
which engine you are using, so if you guys are less than that , how do you
