KR> Cleaning Canopies

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
I received the following from Yodd at Todd's Canopies. I'm sure he will not
mind.
I asked him for the best way to clean his canopy on my kr and his reply is
listed below
Phil Matheson,
-
I did not recieve your last email. Thankyou for emailing me again.

I visited your interesting website.

What do you clean the canopy with? May I start with what not to clean it
with?
Don't use any hosehold cleaners. They probably have chemicals that will
attack the plastic.

Use cleaners that are made for plastic. A lot of them not only clean, they
polish the plastic and take all the static charge.

I use Novus products. Novus #1 is a cleaner, polisher and anti static agent.
Novus #2 is a rubbing compound for fine scratches. With a cottom cloth and
this, one can make scratches that are not to deep, disappear.

Novus #3 is a courser compound for deeper scratches. Use #3, then #2.

If they don't have Novus products in Australia, I'm sure there are products
there that do the same thing.

Some rubbing compounds made for polishing cars do the same thing as Novus
#2. You may want to experiment with these on a scrap piece of plastic.

Thanks again for the business!

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Scott William wrote:

Do you really believe the claims of these guys?
---

Scott.

Is Scott really a mathematician or one that is trying to pull the wool over
the eyes of others and still has blurry eyes from the night before.
Scott forgets that there is a gear drive involved and evidently knows very
little about gears and torque.
A std 1600 vw and most type 4 engines produce about 130 ft lb of torque at
3500 rpm ...check the VW book Scotty.
We didn't say that the engine produces 200 ft lb of torque
The engine produces around 130 ft lb of torque and also around 80/85 hp. at
4,200 rpm
The gear drive multiplies the torque by the gear ratio which is 1.6 to 1
which equates to over 200 ft lb of torque at the prop.
The reality is by gearing we increase the available torque and provide an
rpm
more suited to an efficient prop diameter.
The gear drive unloads the engine, allows a more efficient cruise rpm
around 3200 to 3300 and that is BELOW normal highway cruising on a VW
engine.

If you had divided the 200ft lbs of torque you have found 208 Div by 1.6 =
130ft lbs at the crankshaft

Of coarse you knew that Scott.

KR> Re: Réf. : Scott on Torque

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Scott, Ron Slender asked me to post this regarding the wording on his web
page.

Scott,

Looking at the article written on our web site it does say type 4 not type
1 as mentioned by yourself. (Type 1V shown as roman numerals )
We say in that article that 100 hp and 200 ft lb + of torque is what you
need up front.
If it were wrong I would change it but it isn`t.

The KR was designed for a 60 hp vw direct drive engine.
The aircraft now is being fitted with nearly twice capacity engines of
various manufacturers and yet the prop diameters are restricted to the
original design of undercarriage.

Why
Those that do increase prop diameter end up with a more efficient airplane.
It is then a matter of matching performance with diameter and pitch.

There is no advantage using our 100 hp gear drive engine in a KR unless you
can swing a 60 inch diameter prop.
The advantages then would be a much shorter take off run, most likely
significantly better climb out and probably a more economical cruise mode
due to higher prop efficiency attained by being able to use a more efficient
diameter propeller.

Gear driving an engine optimises a unique condition allowing the engine to
reach maximum power and yet deliver more efficient propeller rpm.
It gets better too, NO prop forces acting directly to a crankshaft, no
thrust forces acting on the crankshaft in unison to prop and power loading
and an engine that is designed to run at an rpm range as accustomed as were
in a car.

Individual aircraft operation is what the pilot enjoys. Most who own one
want optimum cruise against fuel economy and the cruise is set accordingly.
Those that want to light up the sky can do that too.
An RG TT 2200 EFI running a 60 X 70 inch pitch prop would most likely do
that too in a KR2.

I think duct tape would also work as a wrap around the wing to get the

Epoxy will stick to well cured VR. But as the instruction say. USE VR resin

I got my VR resin from a manufacturer of composition Kayaks, NO smell, no

KR> Prop Clearance/ Gear Extensions

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
I'm fitting a 60 inch Dia X 65 Inch Pitch Sweat Apple prop on my RG2000
engine. (26 to 2700 prop rpm max)
At the moment I have about 8 inch prop clearance. Because of the gear drive
and the high torque this engine produces, it is a waste of time fitting a
smaller dia prop.
I have been looking at Fitting the Mark L's extended main leg brackets, and
I have the Diehl tri gear. I want to extend the lower end of the front strut
2 inches,
Options
1-Weld 2 inches to the front leg, and get the leg reheat treated. (4130)
2- make up a 2 inch extension that is machined interference to slid into the
front strut then weld and heat treat. (4130)
3- Make up a new longer swivel mount for the front strut fork. (4130) thus
leaving the front strut as standard.

Any ideas would be welcome.or New ideas I have not yet considered

KR>Newbie -- VW and Corvair

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Well said Steve Bennett.

I was planing a full reply to Marks comments, as I was very disappointed. But
I did not wish to start WWIII

"I think most VW guys wish
they had a Corvair, because it doesn't weigh that much more, but has a lot
more power than a VW."

I think that the Corvair being 6 cylinders should have more power than the
VW, but I still think that because they can only run a small prop for the
size of the engine, and need high RPM compared to a geared VW engine,(eg
RG2000 or Great Plains VW) they do not use their complete potential.

If I had made a comment that most Corvair owners would soon a geared RG2000,
I would have been placed in front of a Langford, Jones and KRnet Firing

Re: Réf. : KR> Its Friday

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Sorry but I had to post this. KR stuff at the bottom.
--
Subject: Airline captain

..as the airliner pushed back from the gate, the flight attendant
gave the passengers the usual information regarding seat belts, etc.

Finally, she said, "Now sit back and enjoy your trip while your captain,
Judith Campbell, and crew take you safely to your destination."

Ed sitting in the eighth row thought to himself, "Did I hear her right?
Is the captain a woman?" When the attendants came by with the drink
cart, he said "Did I understand you right? Is the captain a woman?"
"Yes," said the attendant, "In fact, this entire crew is female." "My
God," said Ed, "I'd better have two scotch and sodas. I don't know what
to think of all those women up there in the cockpit." "That's another
thing sir," said the

attendant, "We no longer call it the Cock Pit." "Now it's the Box office."

KR stuff
I've just sanded my fuse and placed one layer 2 oz deck cloth.
Hopefully close the inner wings over the next few days, and spend some of my
3 weeks holidays getting more building done. still waiting for my 60 inch

unscrew the draincock on the gascolator and
make up a hose that relocates it somewhere near the bottom of the fire wall,
I access it through the bottom of the cowl where the hot eng air is vented
to the outside.
-
Same as a 152 or 172. Pull Cable near Oil dip stick . Which drains fuel /
water out the bottom of cowl.

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Bill wrote
Carb heat is not installed on mine - but I suck cowl air anyway.

This is interesting, Has anyone had problems with this system. I do not know
of car engines getting icing, but the older model car had a manual flap on
the air cleaners to suck exhaust air in cold weather.

My RG2000 is meant to only have air cleaners under the hood, and not suck
direct cold air, says the makers, due to it can effect the mixture to much,
and the twin strongberg carbs do not have mixture control.

S, do I make carb heat set up??

KR> Detachable wings

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
Ken
You will find some photo's on my web page of some pivoting Wing brackets I
found at and air show. They are NOT on my KR. But are very similar to a KR
wing set up.

Over the past few months I fitted and removed my wings in the workshop MANY
times, for building purposes.
I found this way the easiest for one person.
Lay the wing on the ground in the correct position with ?? foam blocks to
protect the Pitot tube etc. and wing tip.

-Lift the WAF end of the wing onto my knee when crouched in front of the
Leading edge.
-Lift the wing with my leg and slip the lower WAF bolt into place
- Walk around and slid the rear bottom WAF bolt in
- lift the wing tip up and place a stand with a foam block under the wings
main spar
- then slid the stand along the wing until the bolts holes are lined up
- install all the bolts EASY!

( you are using the bottom WAF's as hinges, and lift the Wing tip up)

I did glue a block under the WAF's on the Inner wings to rest the outer wing
on when fitting. But the above method seems to work well for me.

My method and you may find a better method, and my way could change after
another many times of practice.

KR> Engine Start-up

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Matheson
I have an 1835 VW engine that I will be starting soon. My question: Is
it okay
to start the engine and run it a minute or two or two, without damage? ( It
would be
convenient not to have the prop in the way)
-
Running an engine for a short time can cause other problems, depending how
long before it will be started again.
By only running for a short time, you get condensation in the engine,
because it does not get hot enough to get rid of the moisture.
So if the engine is to be stored, and not used ,rust MAY form on the bore
etc.
I have my new RG2000 in and out of my Kr and have not started it for that
reason. So I remove the plugs, insert some oil and crank over to get oil
through the crank bearings, then refit the plugs and spin over again to get
the oil over the valves and cylinder calls under compression. I do get some
oil drip out of the exhaust.
This works well.
Others may not agree.
