Great lunch with Mark, Jeff, Paul and Chris. I was about half way home when lost some power. I was a little reluctant doing a mag check, but I thought what the heck. Sure enough right mag was down. After doing some checking the magneto was fine just a bad key switch. The funny thing is Jeff and I were talking about bad magnetos over lunch.___

The flaps are slotted type. I haven’t noticed any lift, but at slow flight they
will pitch the nose over improving vision over the cowling. They are basically
a great speed break.

This is in response to some interest in a one piece wing. First and foremost,
do you have room to build a one piece wing? I figured if I had the room for a
super stretched KR2s I could build the wing in the same building. Some of the
questions were about transpiration. Trust me that was the least of my problems
on this project. It took about four hours to loud and unload fuselage and the
wing. Check out the pictures on my link.

KR> Progress report

2016-04-27 Thread Robert Pesak

Hello everyone,Just a little update on N863RK. Yesterday I finish the
installation on my oil cooler, flying my kr2 the winter months the oil
temperature would stay below 200 ?But as the weather is getting warmer I
noticed the temperature would raise up above 220 degrees . So I figured the
only option was to install an oil cooler. Today I took it for about an hour
flight and at one point I had the Continental breathing hard for about 35
minutes and the temperature never ?got above 175 degrees so the installation
was a success. The only other information I have is, a cruise at about a
hundred and forty-five miles an hour that's about all she will do so if all you
Builders out there remember one very important thing, build it light. Don't
turn a 550 pound airplane into an 850 pounder.Please don't get me wrong,flying
a KR 140 145 miles an hour is not bad at all I've got a hundred hours on it now
with no problems. The icing on the cake will be flying N863RK to the 2016
Gathering see you all there.

KR> Today's Flight

2016-03-20 Thread Robert Pesak
Hi everyone,I haven't given any performance report on N863RK for quite some
time. First of all I can't understand why I didn't build one twenty years ago,
I'm taking some long cross country flights trying to get a good read on
everything. My best?cruse speed is at 145 MPH?burning around?6.4 ?-?7.0 ?GPH ,
I think once I get my wheel pants installed I might another five miles per
hour. As of now I put 82.1 hours on the hobbs and nothing has fallen off in
flight. I'm really happy I stretched the fuselage forward and?aft plenty of leg
room?and it handles great.?Today I took off from M54?runway 1?winds were 280 @8
gusting 14 this one?of the?things I love about this bird cross winds?are no?a
problem, I've done landings with 19 knts cross winds feeling comfortable. Last
week I loaded?160 lb. in the right seat and filed the fuel tanks with 23.5 gal.
with me @ 215lb I was @ I was 1363.23 gross with no handling issues.Hope to see
everyone at the gathering.?

I have replaced my starter on my engine with only 74 hours. The clutch Drive
Unit started to go bad I didn't want to take any chances and what they wanted
for the rebuild that unit I bought a new skytec starter. The reason I went with
a skytech is just what Jeff had mentioned I didn't want to go through the
trouble of plugging that barring hole with the skytec starter you don't have
?to plug the bearing hole.

Thanks, Larry.? Add 2" forward of the spar with a Corvair engine?? I've not
seen anything about extending forward until now.

You do make a good point about the canopy and the roll bar. Now I understand
why yours is different than what I've seen on others.? I like the forward
canopy from the aspect that it gets more out of the way for entry and exit
but the roll bar protection is an important consideration.

My boat is 24 inches longer than a standard KR2.? Nothing added forward of
the spar and I have standard KR2 tail surfaces.? Starting over I'd go with
the standard KR2S length and the 2S increased tail surfaces, and the two
inches forward of the spar.? Also the wider fuselage at the shoulders.? That
would be very much like the 2S that Langford built and I think he would
agree it was a great flyer.

As for a header tank, I went wing tanks only in the out wing sections.
That's a personal call.? I read a crash report years ago about a KR1 that
had a hard landing, the firewall broke away and the ruptured tank dumped
it's contents on the pilot.? Why it never caught fire is a mystery.

My two major concerns when building were fire and roll over.? I put all my
fuel in the outer wings and built a fixed windshield with windshield and
turtle deck bow with gullwing door and breakaway section on the passenger
side.?? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/32133949/100_5561.JPG
Your concerns and comfort level may be different so build to suit yourself.

Despite your understated remark, I can only imagine you are feeling very
satisfied for having done things so well in all those thousands of hours.
I'm greatly in admiration that you've gone through the building process
so well that you can casually state the above.? No one outside the narrow
skill band of those who have gone through such a thing could understamd
just how much meticulous care went into all those thousands of hours of
measuring, cutting, sanding, fabricating, connecting, integrating, all of
that and more.? Among those who know, anyway, your casual statement is a
loudly resonating proclamation of sucess in having done things extremely
well over an extended period of time.? Congratulations Mr. Pesak.?? It's
a satisfaction people like me (non-builders) can never enjoy.?

using rudder only at around 30 KT and breaking is good as well. This afternoon
it quit raining long enough so I could some high speed runs down runway 19 at
50 kt one or both of the main gear tires need to be balanced getting bad

KR> inspection

2015-04-29 Thread Robert Pesak
?WOW !! I can't believe I own a real airplane. Everything went well with the
DAR?, we spent around four hours with the inspection and the paperwork. The
only thing that caught me off?guard was?name of engine. I didn't know that?even
though it's a continental I couldn't call a continental because of the data
plate was lost and was replaced with a home made plate. We renamed the
engine?to RKP 0200-A. Just something to think about when doing the paper work.?

2015-03-28 Thread Robert Pesak
??Hi Everyone,Just a question about hooking up my altimeter. Do I leave the
plug with a tiny hole in the back of the altimeter, or do I remove it and?tie
it in to the static? line??I made up three different punch out list, one for
firewall forward, one for the airframe and one for the cockpit. I was surprised
how many things I found, but I will still use a extra pair of eyes to do the
final before the DAR comes over to do the inspection.?It's looking like the

KR> fuel probe in tank

2015-01-17 Thread Robert Pesak
I'm not concerned about electrical connections in or near the fuel. The only
reason I'm placing them in the tubes is, I don't want to cut holes in my wing
surface. I think I seen a article were Lancair or glasair uses this type of
system.

I wouldn't let electrical connections in the tank worry me much, as long

the fuel pump in my wife's fuel tank, and the +/- 12V connections that
run the pump are right there in the tank, submerged most of the time,
but not when it's low on fuel. They are positively screwed down to a
terminal with a nut though. No spark, no worry...

KR> project update

2015-01-16 Thread Robert Pesak
Oh. I should have mentioned the probes are a after thought . My wing tanks
are part of the leading edge of the wing, and this is the only way without
major surgery on the wing.

Robert,

The only
possibility I can envision is to have a stand pipe inside
the cockpit , connected to the tank , where the level of fuel in the
standpipe follows the level in the wing. In that case, why not just
use a site gauge. I have 7 foot long probes in my wing tanks running
from root to tip of the outer wing panel. Because the tank thickness
changes from root to tip, they are not linear. For wing tanks where
the wing has dihedral there is no perfect system, floats or
otherwise. Know what fuel you start with, know your fuel burn, and
watch the clock.

KR> project update

2015-01-16 Thread Robert Pesak
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to get things finished up in my garage because once I get it to the
hanger it will be much harder. One of the things that's been bugging me for the
longest is how to use capacitance probes for my wing tanks without placing them
in the tanks. I thought of a sight gauge type of system by placing the sending
units in metal tubes and placing them in front of the spar. Then the only thing
I need to do is drill for a 1/8" fitting at the bottom of the tank next to the
fuel outlet. See pics on my Photobucket

KR> hinging cowel

2014-11-25 Thread Robert Pesak
Hi everyone,
On the subject cowl hinging, it doesn't take any longer to remove three wires
then it takes to remove a dozen or so screws. Maybe at our next gathering a
contest is in order. Well I better get back to work so I can get it in the air.
The only thing only thing I lack is finishing up.

KR> update on my project

2014-11-08 Thread Robert Pesak
Hi Everyone,
I added a few pics. to my photo bucket. I've been working real hard trying to
get everything finished up in my garage before I take it to my hanger. The
cooling system was somewhat of a challenge, but looking back, so has everything
else. The pressure cooling system seems to work well, I ran the engine for a
good hour at high and low RPM, with no heat problem.

2014-10-15 Thread Robert Pesak
Hi everyone,
Talking radio problems, Every time I key the mike strange things happen on my
panel. The trim LED lights go all the way to the down to the bottom of the
scale, the ammeter shows about + 20 amps, and it caused my clock to go hay
wire. I hope this is something simple as grounding.
 Thanks, Robert

Hi Everyone,
On the subject of sanding blocks it's?just like everything else, the longer the
better. You can pick them up at Harbor Fright or your local auto body supply
store. For the compound curves use a flexible one and the flat surfaces use the
straight one.
Good luck.?

I started my project around the first of December of 2005. I had two copies of
the new air foil made, one of them I used just to set everything up in a jig to
get all my measurments. The other prints I will use to cut out my ribs.

Thank you for the reply on the one unit wing spar. It looks great and just what
I had in mind. The reason I asked was not to reinvent the KR but because I
built a wing for a GP-4 and that design used a box spar one unit spar and and
less chance for failure.Scott William wrote: Try this:
