KR> Mystery 4th bearing assembly

2016-11-16 Thread BOB ROBERT
I have a mosler ans there is a collar similar to yours but no screws (good
idea by the way) it houses an oil seal for the crankshaft
The collar is held in place with with JB WELD
This the way that the engine manual says to do it
I assume that you would have to pull the collar forward after breaking the
bond and the collar stays on the crank , to free the crankcase
Any other info email or phone me

KR> Bob Lee's KR2

2015-07-11 Thread Bob Lee
Hello Builders,

I have had some interest in Bob's KR2. Some have asked if I would be
willing to sell parts. I have done some checking with other builders and
thought about this idea. I am willing to sell the plane without the engine
as some builders want different engines. So then I would sell the plane in
one package and the engine in another package. I am not willing to break
it down further as I am not as versed in the plane as others are plus I
could wind up having some left over items that I would maybe just have to
trash.

The plane part will include the wing skins and all that goes with that and
the engine is a VW engine from Steve Bennett with a turbo added. Please
feel free to contact me at shortbus1017 at gmail.com or call me at
404-538-1434. I will be glad to entertain all offers.

Thank you for your time.

I have had some different interests in Bob's project and wanted to let you
all know that I would be willing to sell the project without the engine.
Just make me a fair offer for the project is all I ask and I will worry
about selling the engine separately.

Also, if any of you are involved in your local flying clubs or EAA
chapters, please let them know this project is for sale.

Thank you for your time.

KR> Bob Lee's KR2 Project

2014-10-19 Thread Bob Lee
Hello All -

By now all know that I have had the opportunity to sell Bob's KR2 project.
I have sold it to Bob Russell from Canada. Please welcome him to the KR
family and help him finish Bob's project. I think it is fitting that his
project was sold to another Bob.

I thank all of you who help me get information together and put on the
website for others to see his project and for all the help that all of you
gave me during Bob's illness and passing. Bob left a huge hole in my heart
and our childrens hearts as well as others. Please continue to keep our
family in your prayers as we move forward with our lives without him.

Thank you,

KR> Bob Lee & KR project for sell

2014-04-06 Thread Bob Lee
Hello -

My name is Cheryl Lee and I am writing on behalf on my husband Bob Lee. He
is a fellow aircraft builder and is part of these mailing lists. Some of
you have met him over the years at the KR Gatherings and he has handled the
KR Gathering webiste up until this year. Late last fall Bob began not
feeling to well. He had open heart surgery 2 years ago and thought
something might be up with his heart. So he started seeing his
cardiologist. He thought he was feeling some better but I didn't really see
much improvement. In March I had to take him to the hospital and he was
found to be anemic and dehydrated. They found out he had some ulcers that
were bleeding in his stomach that was causing him to be anemic. While
finding that out they saw something suspicious on his pancreas and liver.
They brought in an oncologist and did a liver bioposy as they suspected
cancer. They got his stable and sent us home and we were to get the results
of the bioposy a week later. We never even suspected cancer. The day
before we were to get the results from the liver bioposy Bob had a huge
stroke in the left frontal lobe. This affected his memory, communication
skills and processing skills. For 5 to 6 days he did not know who he was or
any of his family. Then finally he started to recognize me and our 3
children. He has finally started to recognize other immediate family and a
very few friends. He spent two weeks in the hospital trying to get his
blood stabilized and start therapy. About 2 weeks ago we moved his to a
rehab center to continue with PT, OT, and speech therapy. The communication
going in still gets messed up. Sometimes he understands and others times he
doesn't. He knows enough to tell you he doesn't understand you or know you.
His speech going out has gotten better but he doesn't always express himself
correctly. The memory has a long way to go. He doesn't read or write much
as some of this has affect his vision as well. His balance and walking has
greatly improved and he doesn't need a walker or cane. Late in the day he
needs assistance as he gets tired. Hopefully he will be coming home this
upcoming week and we will have in home therapy to continue his progress. I
will be here with him and working with him as well as he can not drive. We
have to master things like stairs in our house, taking care of his hygiene
and even the simple things of putting clothes on correctly. He has come a
long way and is doing better each day. He is heading in the right
direction. We are working toward his recovery from the stroke and in the
next two weeks will be getting a second opinion on cancer treatment. They
have a Cancer Care Center in Newnan (an houraway from us) that we will be
going to if they will take him. I am not sure due to the stroke if he
remembers the possibility of having cancer.

In my work, I am a contractor. I have no insurance. All our insurance is
up under Bob right now. He will not be going back to work as a bus driver
this fall and therfore his benefits will expire. I am looking to go back to
work then so we will get benefits under me. Right now my main concern is to
help him recover as much as possible from the stroke and start some cancer
treatments. When all this came down my children and I were devasted. But
since then we have pulled together and become strong for Bob with the help
of our family, friends, and neighbors. The high school that our youngest
son attends is dedicating a baseball game to him come next Friday night,
April 11. They are taking donations on our behalf. Please visit the site
of www.eteamz.com/lambertbaseball. The medical bills are coming in and with
our wonderful Obamacare, we have our fair share to pay. Please donate to
our cause so that I can stay home and take care of Bob to help him more
forward in his recovery. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated
no matter the amount.

I do not think that Bob will ever finish his airplane much less fly it. I
need to sell it as that will help with our medical expenses and mortgage
payments as well. He has alot of information and pictures of his project on
his website of www.flyboybob.com. Please go out and view it and pass it
along to anyone who would be interested in buying his project. He has the
body with retractable landing gear, Steve Bennett motor, Dan Diehl wing
skins, and a nice insturment panel. I will have to look for the plans. I
even have some tools that can be purchased as well if a buyer needs them to
help finish the plane. I do not have a price yet as I need to talk with a
few builders to find out what a fair price would be. We live Suwanee
Georgia and will be glad to have anyone comelook at the project. Please
feel free to respond to this email or you may contact me via my personal
email of shortbus1017 at gmail.com or my cell number is 404-538-1434. I will
be responding to all interested as Bob doesn't understand how to use a cell
phone or his computer right

KR> Project up for sale

2014-03-16 Thread Bob
Ok guys, the first one to jump on this one is going to get one heck of a deal.
A friend has decided that age is catching up so he is selling his KR2 project.
The fuselage is in boat stage, the tail looks pretty much done, elevator and
rudder controls done landing gear, wheels and tires installed, I think he has a
fiberglass seat, spars are done, the top of both outer wings have foam
installed and sanded you just need to install the foam on the under side, he
will also throw in a few miscellaneous things like a roll of fiberglass and I'm
not sure what else. His craftsmanship on this is super. He appears to have done
things right. If you are looking for a really good project then this one will
give you a great head start. A lot has been done. He is only asking $1,700.00.
He has a lot more in it and if you ask me this is a good deal.
If you are interested please contact him direct.

Pierre said:
<< "...so I hooked up the compressor, blocked off all the inlet, breather and
other openings, prepared the little water spray can and started the

I was a little luckier than Pierre, when I built my header tank I got better
advise: Use a tee going into the tank. On one side place a baloon and on
the other side place the compressor. That way, the baloon will limit the
pressure in the tank and you won't distort it with the pressure.

Your post begs the question: How do it know we "fly throttled back or at high

to decide to advance the ignition?

The "official hotel" for this years Gathering is the Holiday Inn, the
same as past years. I received the following info from Dianne Morris on
rates.

"I have rooms set up for your event - blocked beginning on Oct. 3 -
checking out on Oct. 6, 2013. Your group rate is $99.00 plus taxes,
total per night is $111.89. "

If you plan to book at the Holiday Inn, I'd recommend calling them
direct at 618-244 7100 and tell them you are with the KR
Gathering. They have doubles and singles with queen size beds. If
you have any problems, shoot me an e-mail at flesner at frontier.com.

For Bob Lee, please post to the Gathering site. Thanks..

. Creating conditions to get you an unrecoverable spin or an uncontrollable

Jeff is spot on here. Just think if they had only three gallons each and for
our purpose fuel weighs in at 6 LBS a gallon. If your fuel don't transfer
out of one tank you got 18 lbs sitting on the wing tip. When you get slow
the plane is going to be like a teeter-totter. On final is not the place to
practice spin recovery. I don't care how good you think you are it only
takes one time. Some of the best pilot of our time are no longer with us
because of one mistake why increase our odds. Build smart...fly safe..

KR> Actual work on a KR

2011-09-30 Thread Bob Glidden
Well prior to the gathering I had no plans to finish the KR in my barn aka
the "mouse trap" but since returning from another AWESOME time at Mt Vernon
I decided that I would drag the plane out and give it a shot. I pulled off
the old firewall and took a 2180 vw off a Corby starlet and I'm headed out
for new plywood today to replace the firewall. I or I guess we since my 15
year old is helping would really like to have the front end repairs done and
the engine hung and get the first run on the engine before turkey day in
November. And I guess since Lee is so busy helping everyone else with their
KR work I will have to do all my composite work myselfthanks buddy,
actually he is going to do a pair of wheel pants I got from John B. he mouse
trap will make it to the gathering next year if I have to tow it. About
three years ago I decided I was going to slow working on airplanes and focus
more on my two boy's activities in their lives and believe me they have
many. Well that has not changed I just found a way to do both...get them
interested in airplanes and working on them. Even the wife thinks working in
the barn on airplanes is a good idea. It really was great seeing everyone
this year and it would be awesome to see 40 KR's at Mt Vernon next year.

KRnetHeads,

We talked about having a "race" Saturday morning at the Gathering, weather
permitting. Jeff Lange worked out the details for us a few years ago, and
they're posted at
http://www.krnet.org/misc/KRGatheringPerformance.pdf . It's not called a
race because you don't have to run wide open if you don't want to, although
some folks will want to. This allows you to gauge your progress in
streamlining or sharpening piloting skills in order to improve performance
from one year to the next. Planes depart the starting line in order of
expected finish time, so the gaps between planes should grow throughout the
short run, enhancing safety. I think everybody who's done it has enjoyed
the experience, and I'm looking forward to it again this year.

Anyway, if you want to run it this year, the plan is 9AM Saturday morning.
Please print this out and bring it with you so you'll have the details
already in-hand.

Thanks,

KR> EAA survey

2011-07-06 Thread Bob Glidden
EAA was founded on experimental aircraft, and I'm not thrilled that it's now

being expanded to "spam cans", a segment that is well represented in so many

ways. Warbirds are nice from a nostalgic standpoint, but if I never had to
stop another conversation with a KR builder to plug my ears while a Harrier
showed off in front of the airshow crowd, it would be fine with me.

I think it is funny that the founder of EAA Paul P. started SAA a few years
back because he said EAA was becoming to commercialized. Wonder who
caused/let that happen. It is all about the money now. They would rather
have people giving massages and selling pots and pans then a guy selling
used parts. Anyone that knows me knows I love anything that involves an
airplane and Oshkosh is like therapy. If it was not for the great group of
people that get together every year, (most of them I met through this group)
it would not be worth going. It has became a family trip for us now and has
become the start of our family vacation every year. Oshkosh has always been
the place for anything new in aviation that hits the market. Both EAA and
AOPA are a big voice for GA and do a lot a great things, but I would love to
see the swap meet area get back to what it used to be. Anyone that goes to
Sun-N-Fun knows what I mean, their fly market is awesome. So go ahead and
flame away, but remember this is my opinion and has been shared by many
including the founder himself. We are the members and should have a voice,
if we all keep sending emails to them and voicing our thoughts maybe we can
get it back to the way it was.

KR> KR Gathering Video?

2011-03-29 Thread Bob Vermeulen
Hey gang,

I see Larry Flesner asking about me in his last post. I figured I had
better give everyone an update. I'm still standing on the green side of
earth. A lot has happened in the past year since the heart attack and
stroke. I've sold both of my planes and my Bridgeport. Most of my
tools have been sold and I've really cut back on the things that I do.
After the stroke, I was mostly blind. Some of my sight has come back,
but I'll probably never be able to drive or fly again. I always tell my
"doc", I can see everything but I can't see anything. Funny, but when I
look straight ahead, everything is in view, but my brain crosses it up.
Try walking around with your eyes crossed. That's kinda what it's
like. I don't look for pity, just understanding. The next time I see
you, I may be looking straight at you, but may not see you. I still
get the Digest everyday and reading it takes a little longer than it
once did, but I look forward to it and love to follow the progress of
everybody. Last Sunday I met with Terry ( one of my camera operators/
partners) and we got to talking about the "Gathering" I told him it
was going to be back at Mt. Vernon again this year and it sounded good
to him. If we can, we are going to try to be there this year. We
probably wouldn't shoot video, but we sure would like to see everyone
again. The "Gathering" is a great event. If you've ever been to one,
you know what I mean. If you haven't, you need to go. Well worth it!!

Well that's about all there is to report. Thanks to all you guys that
have sent me kind notes and thoughts. I hope to see you at Mt. Vernon.

Bye,

KR> KR2S for sale

2011-02-16 Thread Bob Glidden
The FAA also says that we are responsible to self assess ourselves on rather
or not we are medically fit to fly rather we qualify for a medical or not,
and if you have failed a FAA medical you do not qualify for LSA. I would not
want to be on the wrong end of somebody's mishap flying when they should not
be.

It's my understanding that the FAA say's that your aircraft is what you say
it is. If you call it a powered glider you can fly it without a medical. You

also can fly at any speed and at night. You do have to have a glider
endorsement on your ticket.

Two questions come to mind with that good compression:
 1. What brand of rings are you using?
 2. Who does your valve jobs?

OK 3 questions:
 3. What kind of valve job do you use?

renting a hanger in that area? I tried looking online with little luck.

KR> New old KR Gathering photos

2011-01-01 Thread Bob Lee
KRnuts,

For the few of you that are old enough to remember the last century, I made
a discovery this weekend while searching through the basement for old
photographs. A while back someone had asked about Don Beachum's retract
system. I knew that I had taken some shots of his plane at a KR Gathering
in a previous century. Over the holiday break I got the machine from my dad
to convert film to digital images and went hunting for the photos of Don's
plane. I haven't found those photos yet but I did run across photos from
the 1986 Tulsa, OK KR Gathering, the 1988 and 1989 Covington TN KR
Gatherings, the 1990 Rough River State Park KY KR Gathering, and the 2001
Pine Bluff AK KR Gatherings. These photos have been uploaded to
krgathering.org. They have been added to the links at the bottom of the
home page. You can scroll down to the bottom to find them.

You will see that there is a note asterisked (*) to these links stating:
"Photo quality for these Gatherings (1986 through 2001) are not too good.  I
found the photos in a box in the basement in 2010 and converted them to
digital images from the original film.  It might be good enough to jog the
memory of some of us old timers about Gatherings gone by."

Just in case some of you are wondering, there are only 250 days till the
2011 KR Gathering in Mount Vernon, IL on September 9-10, 2011!

KR> Stalls

Mark Langford wrote:

<< I'm not trying to say that a KR is any more dangerous than any other

For my money Mark, your flight report is completely normal for most
airplanes. Early in my flight training I did the same thing when learning
accelerated stalls. While fixating on the airspeed and artificial horizon,
the ball went all the way to the side. When the wing broke I was inverted
before I knew what happened and pointing straight down. I was in a Cessna
150 with an instructor at the time. In the flight debrief, the instructor
told me "I saw it coming but you didn't so I let it happen". That was one
of those learning moments where you get a lifetime lesson in seconds. All
these years later I scan the ball continuously to make sure I don't skid
into a problem.

Sure don't mean to scare anyone and you bring up some good points. I will
revise my gross down to 1200# and find a way to meet that. Maybe I'll leave
the tail behind. LOL That's why I post this stuff. I want to hear what
you guys have to say. There is a reason they call them Experimental. But
that's no reason to be complacent and build a deathtrap.

Today I received two drawings from Chris Gardner that he had of Don's

would like the information. Look in the left navigation window of my web

<< I have had a VeriEze and of coarse they have a side stick and it is

There's a point here that needs to be made regarding KR sensativity. It is
pilot induced in one of two ways: First, from my very limited time at the
stick of a KR2 I found it initially almost uncontrolable in pitch. As soon
as Marty Roberts took the stick back it was dead smooth. On my second
attempt I held my elbow against my side and meerly thought about moving the
controls without actually making control movements and things were much
better. Most of us that learned to fly in Cessnas and Pipers are accustomed
to significant control movement and control force. A KR is just different,
not better not worse, but different. If you get some dual time in a KR you
will quickly figure out what it needs to be controlable. In a VariEze there
is an armrest to plant your elbow on which makes flying the Eze easy. Bob
Muse Sr. had a center console in his KR2 for this very reason. It's just
easier to fly a KR if your elbow is not part of the control system. Second,
you must insure that you are in the proper CG range to keep yourself safe.
Most will agree that the front half of the published CG range in the plan is
the safe operating area to make a good flying KR.

The best way to wander through the hype about KR sensativity is to ask
someone that has several hundred hours on his KR how it flys. To a man they
will all say great. Most of the horor stories are from builders/pilots that
never figured out how to fly a KR safely. Enough from me for now, I'm back
to the basement to work on my KR!

Larry,

you wrote:
<< Looking back, I think I've been flying on borrowed time the last

right on the volt meter but everything was working o.k. My main
battery is so hefty that I've been starting the engine and running
the pumps and the radio on it without recharging for at least an hour
or two now. The lesson here is a gradual failure will give you hints
if you bother to pay attention. If something doesn't seem quite
right it probably isn't. >>

You need a low voltage warning indicator. It gives you immediate
annunciation of a failed alternator. There is approximately a 1.5 volt
difference between a fully charged battery and the output of your
alternator. This difference, 14 volts down to 12.5 volts gives you a
transition to monitor for safe flight. Typically the low voltage warning
will go off around 13 volts so that when your alternator fails, you have a
fully charged battery to complete the current flight safely with battery
only operation.

You can build you own low voltage warning indicator for $10 worth of parts
using a schematic supplied by Bob Knuckles at his web site
http://www.aeroelectric.com or you can purchase a fully assembled product
from him if you desire. He has a book "Aeroelectric Connection" that you
can purchase or you can download the pdf for free. It is a wealth of
information that you can use to keep your bird safe. The most significant
section of the book deals with his philosophy of reliability. He doesn't
propose that we strive for zero failures, because failures will happen. He
builds a case for designing an electrical system that provides the ability
to safely complete each flight to the exhaustion of available fuel on board.
A combination of information and pre-planned proceedures leads to overall
system reliability and safety of flight. This makes the alternator failure
a maintenance item rather than a flight safety issue. Hope all goes well
with the alternator repair so that you can fly to the Gatering. See you in
5 days!

I am to the point of building a new fuel tank for my new fuselage following the

Charles

I may be wrong but I don't think there is any federal requirement to have
insurance but your local authorities may require you to show proof of
insurance to use their facilities. Our airpark requires owners to have X$
liability on their aircraft but guests who fly in are not required to have
it. It only makes sense to protect yourself with liability insurance even if
you don't want or can't afford hull insurance.

What wing do you have on your KR (airfoil?, taper per plans?, span?). I'm
interested in how your kr might relate to mine for altitude performance.

KR> Re: KRnet Digest, Vol 351, Issue 323

The shoulder harness fastening points were in the reinforced hat shelf
behind the seats. This was in the KR Newsletter years ago and also I believe
put out by Rand as the best way. Mine were built to this information.

The shoulder harness stayed fastened to the reinforced shelf, however, the
shelf which was attached to the sidewalls in multiple places ripped loose
from the top longeron (the inner one that acts as a doubler). No Glue Joint
has been found to have failed, all torn wood.

More as I dismantle the wounded areas of the fuselage. My Nascar type
fiberglass fuel tank withstood the crash , no leaks or cracks. Interior of
the fuel tank is filled with Explo-Safe.

KR> Phoenix Accident

2009-11-05 Thread Bob
October 30 started off as a beautiful, sunny day with unlimited
ceiling/visibility and light/variable winds. After a thorough pre-flight and
two hi-speed taxi runs, N811RJ took off. The engine was sounding excellent,
aircraft was stable in all parameters, THEN at 300' began losing power, engine
still running and no obvious instrument/gauge indication anything was wrong.
Aircraft entered a left hand l5 degree turn and safely landed upon a dry flat
area next the riverbed. UNFORTUNATELY, the aircraft slid on the light dust over
the hard surface for over 450' and impacted an earth berm just before Camelback
Rd.

The plane was being flown by an excellent test pilot, who was injured,
receiving a deep cut in the forehead, requiring 21 stitches, slight abrasions
on his left hand. He will heal and be okay.

Test pilot told me he lost power at 300' and the engine responded to mixture
and throttle, just no power. Shut everything down just be landing. Impact with
berm at about 40 mph. The shoulder harness attachment points failed, ripping
the wooden structure from the fuselage. Damage includes spinner & plate, 2 prop
blades, nose gear, one exhaust pipe, oil filter casting, distributor cap, main
spar broke loose from fuselage breaking framework around it, pilot side left
rudder pedal bent, bottom of the fuselage from firewall (firewall loose in a
few places) to back the pilot seat torn loose.

FAA/NTSB preliminary conclusion is that the fuel tank vent was blocked
partially somehow at altitude and caused the loss of power.

I HAVE STARTED REBUILDING.
Until I know more,

Bob

2009-09-16 Thread Bob
Anyone out there have some disc brake similar to or Cleveland 30-9 that will
fit 5" TriStar wheels w/3/4" axles?
Contact me direct at www.resa...@cox.net with condition and price.

Was hoping to make this years gathering, but brake problems prevent this
from happening. Everyone have a good time and safe flying. May next year!

KR> VW oil viscosity

2009-09-16 Thread Bob Lee

You might want to reconsider using synthetic in a air cooled motor. One of
the big selling points of synthetic oil is "reduced oil tempreature".
Unfortunately, this is not a good thing for us because the oil temperature
is reduced by the oil's inability to accept heat. Therefore, the synthetic
oil cannot carry the heat to the cooler as well as petrolium oil. This
results in an engine that is running hotter even though the oil temperature
is cooler.

When you think about it, friction is a small part of the total engine heat
compared to heat of combustion. So even if synthetic oil reduces friction,
it does not significantly reduce the overall engine heat load. Synthetic
oils are great for jets or water cooled engines. In an air cooled engine
the oil system provides a significant amount of the cooling and pertolium
oil is better at transfering heat to the cooler.

Mark, down here in the south, the deer sleep in the morning, they're party
deer and they stay up in the afternoon to early morning looking for fresh

to avoid a deerly departed prop!!

Congratulations Dan, you are finally past the teething stage. Don't let
