2014-09-10 Thread ol' weirdo
This article by Dudley Pattison is from Light Aviation, the magazine of
Light Aircraft Association, the British equivalent to EAA, RAA [Canada] RSA
[France] and so on. The Flitzer is a biplane of all wood construction
including the cowl over the cockpit where plywood is curved over laminated
bows. The first part is wasted on KR builders but the latter section about
applying aluminium to the plywood may be of help to KR builders suffering
from Mustang envy.

?I described my method of fixing heavier duty aluminium panels

to a wooden structure with the use of 'nutserts'. Here I want to describe
the preparatory work I do in readiness for affixing a very lightweight
aluminium skin to a structure. The non-modellers among you may not know the
glass cloth and epoxy form of skinning. With a little care and a fair bit
of elbow grease, a very good, totally weatherproof, light and strong
surface finish can be achieved. I covered the forward upper decking area of
the Flitzer ZIR using this method as, later, aluminium litho plate was to
be stuck to this area for aesthetic reasons. To get a really good finish
you could see three

coats being required with a wet and dry rub between. For my purposes. only
the fact that the skinning will tougher and seal the plywood surface is
important, so two coats would suffice. lt is also an ideal preparation for
a high quality paint finish on ply or wooden surfaces.

 *THE METHOD*

1] Lay the glass cloth over the area to be covered. used 0.6 ounce per
square yard. Don't worry. if all you can get is 0.9 or 1 oz as it will end
up at about the same weight. The lighter cloths are more open weaves so a
little more epoxy is required to fill it brings the finished job to about
the same weight.

2] Mix lay-up epoxy resin [not the five minute variety] at the correct mix
ratio and pour a little in the centre of the cloth. Using an old credit-card
as a squeegee, spread the epoxy in all directions out from the centre pool.

All whiteness will disappear from the cloth as it turns transparent,
indicating that it has been wetted right through. If you have any
?nutserts? take
care not to fill them with epoxy. Do not try to mix enough epoxy to do the
job in one go; mixed epoxy left in quantity gets fed up with waiting and
exotherms meaning it get

super-hot and quickly sets as it boils!

3] Pay particular attention to the edges of the job, ensuring that the
cloth is wetted all the way to the edge - a little beyond doesn't hurt.

4] Check the area all over for dry spots and, more importantly, 'over wet'
areas. The wet areas show up as being very glossy and are an unnecessary
weight addition. Keep squeegeeing them, scraping the excess epoxy off the
edge of the squeegee back into the mixing pot.

5] After allowing it to cure, trim the edges of the cloth with a sharp
craft knife. A sanding block will remove excess epoxy at the edges.

Sand the area all over, removing the gloss finish. Any runs can be scraped
down with a sharp wide chisel held at 90. to the surface,

or use a proper scraper if you have one.

6] Wipe down with a tack cloth to remove dust. Make another mix of epoxy
and apply another thin coat all over. Much less will be required for this
coat as the weave of the cloth is already nearly full and none will be
soaking into the plywood surface. A very thin coat should give a gloss finish
this time. When cured, flat down and remove dust. Voila! You have a sealed
surface that will accept a contact adhesive to fix the litho plate
aluminium or a two-pack hi-build primer surface for your paint job.

A smallish amount at a time, which is poured out on the job quickly so as
not to allow the possibility of excess heat build-up, is the way to go. To
do my front decking I made four mixes. This could have been cut to three if
my quantity estimation had been better.

I used this method of applying aluminum litho plate for my Isaac's
Fury. Thinking
back, however, I realise that it wasn't Iitho plate on the Fury, but thin
commercial grade aluminium. This proved to be the wrong decision as the
aluminium had a surface 'grain' that took many hours of sanding and
polishing to remove, whereas with litho plate

a polished finish is readily achieved with a small polish and far less
effort.

 *What is litho plate*

Litho plate is the thin [0.3mm] aluminium sheet that comes in drawing paper
size ? A3, A2. A1, A0 and so on. Offset litho print shops use it as part of
the print process. Normally, when the print run is finished the litho plate
is considered scrap and can often be procured at no charge - one more
benefit So, the second-hand plate comes to you etched on one side with whatever
the printer was producing and with a clean aluminium surface on the other.
The plate is very light and of a grade that is maleable which is why
aeromodlers started using it years ago.

I use 3M Scotch-Weld 10 after reading that it was the choice of car
homebuilders for sticking aluminium to plywood to make their

vintage-style car

They work just fine. If possible get the instructions and even the video, yes
video if the original owner still has them. If not let me know and I will see
if I can find mine. If you don't have any experience with them it is important
that you really study the instructions. I made a mistake on mine by not
removing enough of my aft spar. I should have noticed it during a test fit but
thought it was good. The result was more filler than I would have needed if
done properly and more time spent sanding. If you don't know already you will

An important nit to this is that at this stage, this is only a bill that was
introduced by two congressmen and written with assistance from the EAA
government affairs folks. ?Roughly 2% of all bills introduced actually make it
through Congress to become law, so this proposal still has a long and
potentially arduous journey. ?Look forward to the EAA orchestrating an email
and letter writing blitz on Congress when they are back in session in January.

The FAAs antics over the last year or so has left them no longer in the good
graces of either party in Congress. They refuse to abide by their own rules and
want to usurp Congress by setting up their own taxation without Congressional
approval. ?Congress willnot give up that much poer, so will act to smack them
down. ?Depending on the level of support through Congress, this may be a ruse
to push the FAA into acting on the EAA/AOPA proposal. ?The ball has been in the
FAA's court for 2 years with complete indifference and inaction. ?Now that the
ball may be taken away from them, I would look for the FAA to suddenly find the
AOPA/EAA proposal submitted 2 years ago to get a sudden and vigorous review.
?On the other hand, if this picks up good bi-partisan support, you never know
what might happen in politics. It is going to be interesting to watch.

KR pilots" driver license" dream about to come true;

According to the AVWEB site the US house is voting to allow drivers license
pilots to operate 250 knot, 6 place, 6,000 lb, day VFR. That means the KR
community is virtual heaven doors opened! All those who couldn't or wouldn't be
able to fly the KR now may be able. For all of usa pilots who are law abiding
citizens and have been oppressed by the FAA? medical standards intended "fit
for fighter pilot duty" entitlement. The real world that will have immense
opportunity's for General aviation!? KR pilots now duplicate as CAR pilot's.

As you already know, adjusting that oil pressure relief spring only changes
the upper limit of where the oil system dumps excess oil pressure back to
the sump, so max pressure is raised, but the lower pressures reached once
the oil is warmed up are still low. The usual answer of course is loose
bearing clearances and that kind of thing. As you also know, the general
rule is 10 psi per thousand RPM, so you are right at that limit. Having
said that, I've flown with less, but only long enough to put a higher volume
oil pump in it. Clark's makes at least two different versions in them and
I've flown both with good results. They'll bring up pressures throughout
the range, although more pressure will be dumped during cold operation.

The "power robbing" point is the main downside of a high volume pump, but
another downside with the Corvair is that the oil pump is run by the
distributor drive gear on the bottom of the distributor. That gear has a
slot in the bottom that turns the pump, and the gear is pinned onto the
distributor drive shaft by a pin. That pin, subjected to enough shear, can
shear in two, leaving neither pump nor distributor turning.I've heard of
this happening, but don't know anybody personally that it's happened to.
It's relatively rare, and may involve extenuating circumstances. If I'm not
mistaken, William Wynne replaces this pin with something stouter, so this is
an option, and maybe has already been done to yours. It's insurance against
a problem that is made more likely by use of a high volume pump. Having
said that, all of my engines have used a high volume pump except for a
2700cc experiment that I ran for a short while. Since I have a remote
cooler and filter, I feel the need for a high volume pump, and will never go
back. It does make a difference.

To answer your question, most folks I know consider 55 psi to be just about
perfect, and certainly not too high. On a super cold day with no preheat,
it'll climb above that as the bypass valve is overpowered. If it gets over
about 85 psi, I'll make sure my oil filter isn't puking oil before I take
off, by doing a few donuts before takeoff. It happens!

220F wouldn't bother me, but the 29 psi at 2950 RPM is getting there. A
high volume pump will certainly improve that.

By the way, I never saw your CorvAircraft post either, so you may want to
repost it there. You may have the old address. The new one is given at the
top of http://www.corvaircraft.org/ .

2013-06-23 Thread schmleff .
I tried to send this to the Corvair list but I must have failed to
make the transition to the new list. I will have to sort that out
tomorrow. Until then, I am sending the body of my email to this list.
Its KR related but Corviar specific.

I have gotten a few more flights in on the Corvair powered KR this
week. For the past couple of weeks we have been working to get the oil
temps down. Originally, there was a large plate type cooler installed
on the top of the engine with no ducting to or from it. It basically
sat in stagnant air. We built a baffle below it and routed it's outlet
to the low pressure side of the cowl. That helped but its still
running 220f in cruise. While I am not startled by that temp, It does
make it difficult to control the oil pressure in various modes of
flight.

During today's flight with an OAT of 75f, I saw 29psi of oil pressure
while the engine was turning 2950rpms and the temp was at 218f. While
that pressure is adequate it will be lower on hotter days.

I have a few questions.

What is the max acceptable oil pressure for a Corvair engine?
What is considered the max continuous oil temp (we are using the
recommend Rotella oil)?

I have built an oil pressure adjuster that allows me to vary the
pressure on the control spring. It works as intended, but during
takeoff with an oil temp around 150f, the pressure is about 55psi.
After it heats up it drops to what I have mentioned above. In the VW
world, 55psi is not an issue, but I need some input concerning the
Covair engine.

After getting the mixture distribution sorted out, this is the last
lingering issue I am dealing with. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any help!

engine, so I can fly it before I get too old to be able to do so. Also, the
W is not favourable for flying with the lighter VW engine, now that I have
moved the fuel to the wings.

So, the VW Firewall Forward package is now officially for sale. I have also
decided to sell it only within the Continental US, due to "I don't know how
to ship outside the US and don't want to mess with the hassle of it".

This is complete, from motor mount to tip of spinner, including the cowling
and a lot of other stuff.

If you are seriously interested, click on this: da...@windstream.net to
contact me off net. I will send you any information you request. I will
soon be posting this to Ebay and Barnstormers and any other place I find
where people are interested in auto engines for aircraft use.

I expect that it will take me about 3 months to complete this project, so my
goal is for Labor Day, to put her back in the air under Corvair power.
Thanks for all the help and advice I have received so far, I certainly could
not do this without you. I owe a special thanks to Roy Szarafinski for his
dedication to making this engine as perfect as it can be and mostly for his
continued commitment to helping me get it in the air. He is always a phone

For a great belly board design go find Jim Morehead's build site. His belly

2011-04-21 Thread Ronald Wright
Hi Vaughn,

100% of US pilots learned in taildraggers years ago..  It is NOT that difficult
to land one, just different than a tri-gear..  You can't "go to sleep on the
pedals" like you can landing a tri-gear.  Stay ahead of the plane and you won't
have any problems.

I also suggest you put a "subject" in the subject line of your posts.  I found

trigears? As an inexperienced pilot ,have I bitten off more than I can chew?  I
have always liked the clean low wing design & the KR construction method, but
are high speed planes a bit much to start out in. I have significantly
increased the tail areas to give more stability, & plan on longer wings. Would
I be better to put the KR on hold & go to a STOL type (Roger Mann Storch?) to

Vaughan,

What you are seeing is various guys espousing their preferences for landing
their KRs. The fact is, in the taildragger connfiguration, it lands easily in
either three point or wheel landings. With the wide gear stance of the Diehl
gear, it's not so prone to ground loops. I'm sure it's a pussycat as a tri-gear
as well.

When building your KR, do yourself a favor and install some sort of deployable
drag. Whether it is flaps or belly board isn't really important. But the
cleaner you build the plane, the more you will want some additional drag to
help with the landings. Flaps or a belly board will drop the nose on approach
so you have a better view of the runway environment, and will reduce the float
of the plane while transitioning from flying to rolling. Before someone jumps
on this and flames me about how well their KR lands without flaps, keep in
mind, that I flew my KR 500 hours before I added flaps. Much like Ken Rand
said, "I never knew how much I needed flaps until I installed them."

When I started flying in 1957, tail wheel was the only way to go. We did
have a Tri-Pacer in the SAC Aero Club,(Davis Monthan AFB, AZ), but that was
about a year after I started flying and the first trike gear I flew. On my
second time in the air, with a different instructor than the first time, my
new instructor told me to go ahead and taxi out and then told me to take
off. He was under the impression that I had about 5 hours in the air. At
that time I had about 50 minutes just getting use to the controls. I managed
to get airborne after touching both sides of the runway, (about 50 feet
wide) and making a low pass at the hanger area. My instructor had the
nerves of a lion going after a piss-ant. He said "That was a little rough,
lets go around and try it again." Then after that take off he told me to
land the airplane,(Champ 7AC). Never have I seen an instructor with that
much guts. I did manage to get it on the ground but I suspect I had some
help from the back seat. It was the that he asked me how much time I had.
When I told him I had less than an hour of air work only, he said lets go
try that again! I took off again with nothing but verbal instructions from
him and also landed with just verbal instructions.

When I transitioned to tailwheel I was a 250hr pilot and the first 5 hrs of
training was white knuckled but I got used to it and by the 10th hour it was
like I had been doing it all my life. Every plane takes some time to get used
to and I am sure the KR is no exception. I plan on getting some experience in
either a PITTS or tailwheel RV before I jump in my 2-s taildragger. More time
in type is always a good thing. Don't be afraid of it but respect it like all
planes should be. You'll know when your ready.

Vaughan.
Bite your tongue. I have a standard KR2 Trigear, WHAT a fantastic plane to
fly. I have 340 hours now, but from the start I loved it. I only had a few
hundred hours over 25 years. Now 340 in 3 years.

But I was lucky to have a kr test pilot sitting with me for my 30 to 45 min,
then I was happy.
I then did all the testing.

Landing, easy, just keep it level, lift the nose and it lands like a dream,
slow it to 60 kts over the fence, and keep lifting the nose, she will sit on
the runway at 35 to 40 kts. ( even 50 does not really mater). NOTE I have
not landed a tail dragger KR but have flown one with another pilot.

X winds, fantastic, I love playing in 10 to 15 kt and up to 90 deg x winds,
our strip is only about 25 feet wide. great fun.

Then you get one of those early or late day flights with cool air dead
smooth, the KR will land down to the flair using the trim. It will also fly
by just moving your weight around the cockpit, but I have to place my hands
behind my head and lean back to make it climb out.

Do not give up, hang in there KIWI buddy, you will love it.

gain initial experience? A lot of the componentry can be used on a 2nd project.
Any thoughts appreciated. Cheers Vaughan Thomas. Hamilton, New Zealand

Good to hear that injuries were no more serious then reported. Too
bad about all the airplanes.:-(

2011-03-31 Thread STEVE bennett

It has done nothing but rain since yesterday afternoon here in FL. Today we
had a severe storm, possibly a F1 tornado that came through the airport. Many
tent booths down, all of Zenith aircraft destroyed, two AirCams destroyed and
about 20 homebuilts flipped over and most likely destroyed. Numerous campers
damaged, trees and limbs down everywhere. On the north side of our bidg A,
Airparts tent and ECI tent was blown away. Jimmy Tubbs from ECI suffered a
head injury from a flying tent pole. WW Corvair tent was down, food tents
down, the GEICO ins salesman was injured also. Bill Clapp and company are ok.
Bldg A which we are in shook a little during the wind and hail. Some roof
vents were removed an let lots of rain in. The police declared it a disaster
area and closed down all the blgs and did not let any other attendees in after
4 pm. Sun and Fun's web site will have details but I am sure you can find a
lot more photos and info elsewhere on the web.
Safe in FL.

I am about to glass my tail feathers. In and on past projects I have NOT used
Peel Ply but intend to do so now. My question; do I squeegee off my excess
resin before applying the ply?? Or do I squeegee off the excess thru the ply??
I am using Styrofoam (blueboard) and my usual approach is apply a coat of
resin, follow with a coat of slurry, lay on the cloth, stipple well and
squeegee off the excess.

Welcome aboard Russell
I would suggest that you read our newsletters. They span more than a
thirty five year period and are filled with great ideas and suggestions. You
will have to bear with repetition (and some boredom) as the newsletters do
not appear to have been edited and weened of the excess contributions.
It might also serve you well to remember that "persistence" plays as much
a part as your hand skills!! Keep at it!! Good luck!

Morning everyone. I have looked at alot of reports including the NTSB on home
builts and KR's and I found that most accidents could have been avoided. alot
of
people get so hung up in flying that they don't do a good preflight or a post
flight, yes I said post flight. One thing the military aviation teaches is
things
go wrong and in the air is not the time to find out. Don't get in a routine, one
time after flying check flight controls, next time landing gear, prop ( no fun
intended Mark). We build these machine's with pride, at lest I do but we make
mistake's and anything we build will and can brake. Out of all KR's I think
Mark's plane is best because he can remove the turtle deck which make it easy
to
inspect flight control's and ect.Post flight is great as you find problem's and
can fix them, preflight so you are sure your safe. Some pilot's want to fly so
bad they say I will fix it when I get back, problem is sometime's they don't
come back, get the point. KR's are very safe aircraft if well mantained so let's
build, let's fly and be safe don't take chance's.
