Thanks John for all the photos and posting for our viewing.  Here is a
larger image of Zach's efforts for those that haven't found it yet.

My guess is that was done over 10 to 15 miles of sky.  I built that KR
but Zach taught it how to write. 🙂

Chris did an even larger one several years ago that I'd ask him to post
and the inspiration for doing it.

Yeah. There was no way I could make it to Mt Vernon in one day without
flying at night. I do not have the required equipment for night VFR so I
ended up landing at Hastings, Nebraska on the first day to sleep.

KRnet> KR Gathering 2025

2024-09-17 Thread Oscar Zuniga via KRnet
Netters;

Very interesting and inspiring to read about Chris Pryce's flight to MVN for
this year's Gathering. I often sit with SkyVector and a few minutes of
dreaming time to run some what-ifs and I had run something similar for next
year in N335KC. It's roughly equal legs, three fuel stops, but who knows how
long it might take to fly it from where I am in southern Oregon?

Medford, OR (KMFR) to Twin Falls, ID (KTWF)- 429 statute miles via direct.
Fuel stop #1
KTWF - Laramie, WY (KLAR)- 461 statute via direct. Fuel stop #2
KLAR - Marysville KS (KMYZ) - 486 statute via direct. Fuel stop #3
KMYZ - KMVN - 430 statute via direct.

Total: 1,806 miles. If the plane could average 130 MPH over the ground
(ambitious, to be sure), that would be 14 flight hours. No way I'm attempting
that all in one day, especially since MVN is two hours ahead of Pacific time.
Lifting off at maybe 5 AM here, it would already be 7 AM at Mount Vernon and 14
hours plus fuel stops would be out of the question. As Dirty Harry reminded
us, "a man's got to know his limitations".

Re: KRnet> KR Gathering

2024-09-16 Thread Adam Deem via KRnet
Griff,

I think it might be of benefit to the entire KR community as I’ve seen very
little discussion from years past about how to evaluate and improve
longitudinal handling deficiencies after an airplane is built, even though
it is very common in the production aircraft test and development process.
Longitudinal stability and pitch sensitivity/pilot induced oscillation
tendencies in the KR series have been discussed at length, but I haven’t
seen any quantitative or standard task-based qualitative flight test
analysis of the issue in the archives, even though many builders have taken
a stab at modifications seek to improve stability. My goal is to add some
additional data and results of testing to the body of knowledge and help
builders and owners to have the knowledge to improve deficiences if they
exist.

It would also be interesting to recruit a couple experienced pilots with
different aircraft configurations, I’m thinking Mark Langford (multiple
KRs), Chris Pryce (Corvair KR2S w/ mods), Zach Martine (O200 KR2S), John
Shaffer (nose wheel KR2), and any other experienced pilots who wants to
participate in gathering data to gain a better understanding of how well
particular configurations affect the handling qualities.

I think my particular aircraft might be on the more pitch sensitive end of
the spectrum, but I believe it is by no means alone. My goal is to give
folks some options to consider for making their airplane better behaved and
more enjoyable depending on what phase of build they are in from beginning
to improving an already flying airplane like mine. I’ve flown a lot of
different aircraft types and my KR is the second most challenging I’ve been
at the controls of to fly well, but I think it doesn’t have to be.

I’m thinking I’ll either offer up a time, perhaps the evening of the 29th,
to join a Zoom webinar or I can record it for upload to YouTube to share
with those who are interested. I think I’d prefer to do it on Zoom so
folks can ask questions, though.

If anyone is interested in a Zoom presentation on Sept 29th at 8PM Eastern
time I’ll gladly reserve the time, please replay to me via email or text at
three-three-zero-313-9601.

Blue skies and smooth landings,

KRnet> KR Gathering

2023-09-16 Thread Jeff Scott via KRnet
Well kids, If you are sitting at home today, you're missing some fabulously clear weather and an awesome, low key get together of the KR Family. Competition for peoples choice may be difficult with the KR 360, which we haven't seen since Red Oak in attendance, along with John Scaffer's beautifully refurbished tri-gear retract KR, a very nice Corvair powered KR owned by Adam ??, the touched up KR formerly owned by Larry Flesner, and a few others. If you're building, today would be your opportunity to talk to the experts or catch an introductory flight. Some old friends no longer in attendance are sorely missed, but many are here. It is like a family reunion, without the family fights. 😄-Jeff ScottArkansas OzarksFormer KR guy--Sent from my Android phone with GMX Mail. Please excuse my brevity.

2023-09-06 Thread robert7721--- via KRnet
I am still planning to attend. I do have to change my plans up some.

I was going to drive over with RV Trailer on Tuesday with the wife. But I
now have a project meeting I can't miss on Friday morning.

So now I will be flying in in the KR2S on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately,
the wife will not be coming with me now. I will camp out in a tent.

Thanks,

Hey gang.

This is for everyone planning to attend the KR Gathering
https://krgathering.net this September 14-16 at Mt Vernon.

If you're not coming to the Gathering, just skip this message. Thanks.

You can see the hats & shirts here;
https://krgathering.net/web_pages/proshop.htm

If you're planning on coming and haven't yet registered, please do so ASAP
https://krgathering.net/web_pages/kr-registration-form.htm

If you want a hat or shirt at the event, you must post your registration
within the next 48 hours. Cutoff for orders is Wednesday night.
If you don't get an immediate email confirmation of your registration,
something is wrong. Let me know fast at k...@bouyea.net

If you have already registered, listen up. You can see your registration and
order for a hat or shirt here;
https://krgathering.net/web_pages/AttendeeList.htm PLEASE VERIFY it is
correct!
If it's missing, wrong or you have a question, let me know fast at
k...@bouyea.net

** The order goes in early morning Thursday, August 24th before I go out of
town. There will be no add-on orders. Period. **
It is possible there may be a few spares at the event but don't count on it;
if you want one, put in an order!

We need you to pay for it cash or check & pick it up at the event. If you
don't make it to the event there isn't a method to get it to you. Bummer I
know.

Sorry, there is no sugar-coating this one. I'm out of time on this venture
and want to be sure nobody is left out.
Thank you for your patience in helping me help you.

I'm hoping we get much better attendance that 20.  This is a far cry
from the first year at Mt.Vernon (2004) with 120+ at the awards
banquet.  This will be #33 for me this year.  I missed one Gathering
since 1990 and that was the one in California.  I made it part way there
but cancelled out and returned home rather than face the winds in
Oklahoma.  I didn't spend 13 years building to watch it roll up like a
tumbleweed.  Good decision.  It's still flying today in the hands of
it's new owner.  I'm hoping to see more than 20 old faces from the
past.  Get signed up.  It's free...

2023-07-11 Thread kr2s
We have 20 people registered to attend the KR Gathering at this point. I'm
guessing some people have forgotten to send in their intent to join us so
I'm sending this reminder.

The Gathering site https://krgathering.net/ has a registration link
https://krgathering.net/web_pages/kr-registration-form.htm where you can
send in your registration form.

I'm hoping we have enough people planning to attend to put in an order for
shirts and hats. The deadline to commit to that is arriving fairly soon. If
you plan to attend and would like something from the {Pro Shop]
https://krgathering.net/web_pages/proshop.htm please add that to your
registration form.

Have a good summer & looking forward to another big batch of people signing
up!

Cheers.

KRnet> 2023 KR Gathering site updates

2023-06-09 Thread kr2s
Hello all.

This message is an update to changes on the http://krgathering.net web site.

[Lodging or Camping Info]

I've contacted an agency trying to get preferred rates for Gathering
attendees who want to stay in a hotel during the event. This info is now
available at the [Lodging or Camping Info] page on http://krgathering.net.
Many, many options available there.

[Register to Attend]
We have 10 people who registered for the September 14-16 event at Mt.
Vernon. Always looking for more to sign up so please visit the [Register to
Attend] link on the site as well. You'll receive an immediate email reply to
your sign up. I'll get your name added as soon as possible.

[Pro Shop]
Part of the sign up form asks if you'd like to buy a shirt or hat at the
event. I'm looking into a source for customized apparel with an embroidered
logo. Cost and options will be based upon how many people select this option
and I'll share that info when we get more people signed up. Last year's
offerings are shown on the [Pro Shop] link and should be representative
samples of this year's offering as well.

Last year we had the event running concurrently with the MidWest Light Sport
Expo. Our timeframe this year returns to a dedicated weekend; that is just
KRs on the field. That should give us more time to visit, trade tales and
gawk at the neat airplanes who fly in.

Hope to see you there!

KRnet> KR Gathering 2023

2023-05-13 Thread kr2s
Hello folks!

Winter has jumped straight over to summer here in the Pacific Northwest.
Flying weather is upon us. This is a reminder for the KR Gathering event
September 14-16 at Mt. Vernon. You can read about it at
http://krgathering.net

Welcome to those already registered where you can see their names on the
[Attendee list] link on the left side of the home page.

Hopefully this spurs more people to signal their plans to join the group via
the [Register to Attend] link on the left-side too.

Mark is away on holiday for some well-deserved time off. Not sure I deserve
some but I'm headed out Monday for a couple of weeks myself. I hope to
finish my work populating the [Past Gathering] web pages and get that posted
in the next week or 2.

Fly 'em if you've got'em and everyone else, keep on building!

KRnet> Important Notice to 2022 KR Gathering Attendees

2022-09-15 Thread kr2s
Short and to the point. During the Gathering, we were all exposed to Covid.

The approximate 4 day incubation timeframe puts the exposure most probably
Friday or Saturday. The attendee's first symptoms presented Tuesday night
and they were clinically diagnosed Thursday morning. They are following
doctor's orders, are fully vaccinated & boosted and are doing just fine so
far.
We are not publishing their name. We will not support any medical or
political rants on the topic and those who do will have their account
immediately suspended.

I'm forwarding this information to you all to do with as you see fit. Thank

a late start today. Made it to Woodward OK tonight. Should be home tomorrow

KRnet> KR Gathering

2022-08-22 Thread Flesner via KRnet

Gathering attendees,

1.  Pay for hats / shirts at the Gathering with cash or check ONLY.  No
credit cards please.

2.  Forums for Friday and Saturday afternoon will be moved up from
1:00pm to 1:30pm (John, please correct Gathering site).  The Light Sport
Expo folks has a 30 minute "fly-by" each day and attendees might like to
be outside enjoying that.  It's a dual event so we have to be a bit
flexible.

3.  Anyone wishing to host the Gathering for 2023 should have their
invitation planned and support all lined up.  The location for 2023 will
be voted on during the Awards ceremony Saturday evening.

Pack you bags, fill the car / airplane with gas, kiss your honey goodby
and inform the family that you will be absent.  How many hours?

iFly is very intuitive, and very easy to use. I once tried to enter the

after twenty minutes I gave up. I went to the iFly and had it done in

Registration appears low for the Gathering this year.  If you haven't
already registered please do so at  www.krgathering.net

Reminder: this year is a dual event with the Gathering happening at
Mt.Vernon, Illinois on the same dates as the National Light Sport
Expo.  Separate events on the ramp but access to both.  One trip for
both events, a 2 for 1 special event.

KR>Gathering awards

2022-03-04 Thread Flesner

Hey everybody   Check out the awards at the Gathering web page.
http://krgathering.net .  Click on "fly-in schedule" and scroll down to
the bottom of the page. For several reasons,it was decided to eliminate
formal judging and present only two awards, "People's Choice" and
"Greatest distance flown".  Don't forget to vote for your favorite while
at the Gathering.  While you're on the site to check out the awards go
ahead and register for the event and place your order for hat / shirt.
Hats / shirts this year will celebrate the KR 50th anniversary so you
might want to order and extra one or two.  Price will be in the $15
range for hats and $30 for shirts.  With the economy being as it is the
prices my vary a bit but these prices should be close.  No mail orders
please.  I'm hoping to make the artwork available on the net for those
that are unable to attend so they can have the hat / shirt purchased at
a local shop but that is not a done deal yet and may not happen.  I'll
keep you posted and post photo  of this years art as soon as it is
available.

Don't forget. This years Gathering is a "duel" event with the Gathering
taking place at the same time / place (Mt.Vernon) as the Light Sport
Expo.  One trip, two events, what more could you ask. Put it on your
calendar and inform family you'll be gone those days no matter what and
emphasize the "no matter what".

Chris and John, which one of you will take home the "Greatest Distance
Flown" award ?

KR>KR Gathering 2022 @ KMVN/ Call to Register

2022-02-17 Thread John Bouyea
It's never too early to begin your summer flying plans! And 2022 holds 2
special and specific events for you to add to your calendar;

July 25-31 / Oshkosh Air Venture - we're celebrating 50 years since Ken &
Stu introduced the KR to the world

September 8-11 / the KR Gathering returns to Mount Vernon, Illinois and
running in conjunction with the MidWest Light Sport Expo

Oshkosh: A group of KRNet members are working with EAA National staff to
help recognize the unique qualities and techniques that made the KR method
famous (and heavily copied!) Details are yet to be worked out but many years
of KRs appearing on the flight line as well, as Mark Langford hosting the KR
Forum, make our airplanes "regulars" at Oshkosh. It would be great if we
could have a large presence and as many airplanes at Oshkosh as possible.
Several people have already committed to attending. It will be great if you
can bring YOUR KR too! I'll let somebody else pick up the ball to talk about
the Oshkosh effort.

KR Gathering: After many years' events at KMVN, Chris Collins the airport
manager told Larry Flesner running the Gathering the same weekend as the LSA
event would be a good thing. KRs after all ARE pretty small airplanes! We
have the opportunity to introduce the KR design to a bunch of new people
while we have our regular gathering. Chris plans the KR gang will have
access to the features and functions that make Mt. Vernon such a great
location, even as another event is taking place. Think great facilities,
friendly people, campfires down at the lake, space for camping on location
and everything else. You can read about the Gathering on our dedicated web
site; http://krgathering.net and the MidWest LSA event;
https://www.midwestlsaexpo.com

Another word about the Mt. Vernon Gathering. Larry Flesner volunteered to
run the apparel concession again. Thanks Larry!
You can help Larry by signing up the attend the Gathering AND let us know if
you want to buy a ball cap and/ or shirt specially embroidered to
commemorate the 50th Year of KR flight.

excited to be serving by using our skills in aviation and engineering to
further the Gospel.

If you are interested in following our journey here is a link to our

I am also going to work on trying to figure out how to share some of the
solidworks files for the spinner and back plate 3D printed moulds for all
to benefit from. Can also try to share the control stick grip.

Looking forward to flying in next year!

KR>Gathering Update

2021-09-06 Thread Rob Schmitt via KRnet
Gathering Update 9/6/2021,

Everything is on track for the Gathering later this week.

Shirts and hats are ordered, catering for Saturday night is a go.

Camping will be right behind our EAA hangar K on the west side of the
airfield, we will have a porta-potty set up Weds night.

We have 4 forums set up for the attendees. We will plan to conduct these
presentations in our Large Main Hangar (outdoor conditions).

Friday
10:00 am. Presentation by Brendan and Allie Palmer. They will update us on
their KR aircraft build, plus a discussion on Missions and Bible Translation
across the world.
1:00 pm. Presentation by Rob Schmitt. General KR Aircraft discussion.
General state of the KR aircraft, specifications, resources, engine options,
etc.

Saturday.

10:00 am. Fiberglass demonstration by Griff Picket.
1:00 pm. Presentation by Larry Flesner on Weight and Balance.

Saturday morning will be aircraft judging by EAA Chapter 91 Technical
Advisor Mark Burrow.

6:00 pm. Banquet and Awards Presentation.

Other than the Saturday night Banquet, we will be using the grills and
griddles from the EAA Chapter for informal breakfasts, lunches, dinners.
I am sure I will be asking for help from our attendees/Chapter members to
cook these meals as needed.
Expect just basic burgers, brats, hotdogs, pancakes, etc for these meals.
We'll have a donation jar for those who eat these meals.

We may have a visitor from the EAA Saturday night after the Banquet.
Charlie Becker (Director, Chapters & Homebuilt Community Manager) is in town
for a family event and plans to drop by.
He would like to talk with us about AirVenture 2022 and the 50th anniversary
of the KR. We should be able to plan something special for the KR at next
year's airshow.

KR Gathering attendees.

Covid information for Lee's Summit, Jackson Co MO.

There are no vaccination requirements to attend the gathering.

We plan to do the majority of the activities in our large open hangar that
many of you will remember from 2017. We do not need to wear masks in this
open hangar.

We do have an indoor training room which is air conditioned. Weather
permitting, we should still try to do all activities in the hangar if
possible.

Please bring a mask, there are "County" requirements for wearing masks in
indoor spaces. That may end soon, but there is no guarantee of that.

Of course, if you desire, please wear a mask at any time you wish.

Flying in without ADSB is fairly easy. Follow the notification rules and the
ATC folks will gladly let you in to our airport. Every one I have talked to
says there is no hassle from ATC.

Thanks,

KR>Gathering attendance

2021-08-27 Thread Flesner

With this years Gathering included, I will have made 30 of the last 31
Gatherings.  I attempted to attend the one missed by taking off from
southern Illinois in the KR and heading to California but reversed
course in Arkansas to avoid high winds in Oklahoma.  Joe Horton, with
his trigear KR, oil dripping from his Corvair engine all over is nose
wheel pant, continued on and made it to California and back home to
Pennsylvania without incident. As for me, no guts, no glory.   My KR has
attended 16 of the last 17 Gatherings.  Some kind of record I'm
guessing.  See you all in Lees Summit.  Close enough to the date to
program the GPS for the trip and start checking the weather forecast.

I have reservations at the Comfort Inn at 3701 N. E. Ralph Powell Rd.
Lees summit, Mo.  Phone number is 816 554 6688.  My cost is $335 for Th,
Fri, Sat nights.  If you have membership in some of the travel sites you
may get a much better rate.  I'm pretty sure this is were several other
have reservations.  I'll let them confirm.  I think this location comes

There is another Comfort inn in lees summit that is south of the

KR Gathering 2021
September 10-12, 2021
Lee's Summit Airport - KLXT
Each year KR enthusiasts, builders, and pilots travel to the KR Gathering to
exchange ideas and learn more about the KR series of aircraft.
We talk to fellow pilots, other builders and take lots of photos to assist
in our building process. The best part is when we make and renew friendships
from past Gatherings.
2021 is the forty-ninth anniversary of KR flight and returns to Lee's
Summit, MO (KLXT.) This will be the second Gathering here.
The airport and especially the local EAA Chapter 91 make us feel welcome and
it shows! This year's Gathering is hosted by Rob Schmitt with assistance
from others.

2021-05-06 Thread Rob Schmitt via KRnet
For those looking for hands on information on how to build a KR, please
consider coming to the KR Gathering in September.

While it was cancelled last year due to COVID, this year is looking good.

The dates are September 10-12. Location is Lee's Summit Airport (KLXT) just
outside of Kansas City, MO.

Our EAA Chapter 91 will be the host again this year. We conducted the KR
Gathering back in 2017 as well.

Gerald, Have you looked at all of the web pages and blogs that are listed at
http://www.krnet.org/ ? There are at least 50 of those sites which detail
almost all aspects of typical KR construction, many in excruciating detail.
Perhaps you should start by reading the plans, searching the links at KRnet
to see what kind of construction details you can find under each of the
"Projects Under Construction" and "Completed KRs" headings. If you can't
find anything there regarding any given specific aspect of KR building, I'd
be quite surprised. And then there are the old KR Newsletters. There are
thousands of pages of similar information, complete with photos and
drawings. Some of this stuff is outdated, but many of the construction ideas
that are now commonplace came from these old newsletters. The link to those
is at http://www.krnet.org/newsletter/ .
Specifically, http://www.krnet.org/newsletter/kr_newsletter.pdf will get
them all in one file, but give it a few minutes to download.

If you don't have time or willpower to do the research and finish the plane,
then yes, perhaps it's time to pass Tim Brown's very nice start on a KR2S
down to someone who is willing to finish the plane and fly it some day...

KR> KR Gathering 2020 cancelled. Rescheduled for 2021

2020-07-06 Thread Rob Schmitt via KRnet
The members of the KR Gathering Steering Committee made the decision to
cancel this year's KR Gathering that we had scheduled in September 2020 at
the Lee's Summit Airport.

There were just too many issues with the Covid 19 that were going to make
this difficult for us to execute. The biggest issue was going to be meals
and meal serving at the EAA Chapter. The county also recently instated new
mask wearing policies as well. We are just not sure when any of this was
going to end.

We would however like to try again in 2021 in Lee's Summit. The tentative
dates in 2021 will be the weekend of September 10-12. I have already talked
to the Airport Manger and he is good with these dates.

Sorry for the change, folks.

advising another plane about my direction and altitude, and the other
pilot said he was IMC at the moment anyway, so couldn't see me
regardless. Then I got a call from Approach, by tail number, asking if
I was aware of the other traffic! I acknowledged that I had him "on the
scope", had been watching him, was well above and out of his way, and
thanked him for the oversight. ADS-b is really cool in so many ways,
but that one was a bit unnerving.

I also discovered something cool in the iFlyGPS software on my Android.
There's a data field ("instrument") called "Altimeter Setting" that you
can add to the display, which shows the barometric pressure at the
nearest ADSB reporting station. So you always know what your altimeter
should be set to, rather than having to check around local stations to
get that. This means less wandering all over the sky to me, which is
always good

KR> ADS-B waivers - WAS: KR GATHERING 2020

2020-05-21 Thread John Bouyea via KRnet
I see 2 topics here-
1. The AOPA web page talks about getting a "Fringe Airport Policy" waiver and
that seems it would apply to KLXT.
If you are operating out of one of the listed "capacity-constrained airports"
you are unlikely to be approved. I doubt any KRs are based in one of these
facilities.
Randy, I guess it comes down to where you are based. And as is noted
previously, the different FSDOs have differing interpretations of the rules so
YRMV...
The AOPA info as quoted;
"You'll need to use the FAA's ADS-B ADAPT
https://www.faa.gov/nextgen/equipadsb/adapt/ program to make a request to do
your flight. ADAPT stands for "ADS-B Deviation Authorization Preflight Tool".
You can make your request no more than 24 hours out and no less than
1 hour before. AOPA has put together a ADAPT fact sheet
https://www.aopa.org/advocacy/ads-b-adapt that may be helpful as well."
This page also talks about;
" For long-term authorizations for fringe operations in aircraft not equipped
with ADS-B Out, such as for based aircraft, the ATC facility responsible for
that airspace can be contacted to enter into a Letter of Agreement (LOA). An
LOA will replace the need to conduct per-flight requests in ADAPT. This is one
of the few cases where the local ATC facility is contacted directly. AOPA can
assist with contact information, see ADAPT contacts."

2. As for initial airworthiness certification, aircraft without engine-driven
electrical aircraft should be exempted from ADS-B equipage:
14 CFR 91.215(b)(3) and 91.215(b)(5) specify exemptions for “any aircraft which
was not originally certificated with an engine-driven electrical system or
which has not subsequently been certified with such a system installed,
balloon, or glider.” See
https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2017/january/19/ads-b-requirement-clarified-for-nonelectrical-aircraft

I was hoping there was a "wedding cake" airspace around KLTX to sneak
under but it is a 30 mile vale requiring transponder.  That means two
waivers, one to arrive and one to depart several days later.  I may have
ADS-B out by then if I can convince myself to spend the money.  Do you
realize how frightening flying can be when you realize all the airplanes
that are in the air with you. 50 years of flying and I hardly saw
another airplane and now with ADS-B in only they're all over the place.
Equipping with ADS-B out also might scare the hell out of me.

Rob and all,
Glad to hear you have active plans in progress for the KR Gathering at Lee's

travel will be possible coinciding with the event. Someone posted a question
about the ADS-B requirement due to the proximity of KLXT to KMCI. AOPA
recently published guidance regarding getting a waiver of sorts.

KR Gathering 2020

We are still on track to have the KR Gathering the weekend of Sep 11-13 at
Lees Summit Airport (KLXT).

I just talked with the Airport manager. With the current Covid-19
restrictions, it would be cancelled. But no one is projecting they will last
until September. I have not started ordering shirts/hats/meals yet because
of the current situation. I plan to call him back up around the 1st of July
to confirm. The restrictions affect our EAA Chapter as well, but still think
September will be clear.

Side note, the Chiefs are playing the Texans on Thursday night September
10th (if the NFL gets to play). I'll be at the game that evening, but I'll
make sure everything is setup for arrivals, etc.

Currently, there are no single game NFL tickets available. All games are

We have a pretty good tailgate group I am in, always fun. That will be open

Just FYI.  I have 4 shirts left if anyone didn't make it and still wants
one.  One X-Large and Three Large.  No hats.  Please contact me off list if
you want one and we'll get it done.  Thanks.

Now, brief recap of my adventure homeward.  Left MVN at about 9:30 a.m.
bound for APS with a fuel stop at GNF.  While refueling at GNF I noticed
oil drops on my nosewheel - and there aren't supposed to be any at all,
ever.
So, we pull the cowling and a nice oil film on everything.  And this is at
a little airport in the middle of nowhere with Zero services.  But had only
lost about a quart of oil so it was a very small (or very recent) leak.
Cleaned everything, ran the engine and tried to find the leak.  About the
third time, we figured out it was the Hobbs sensor.  But, what do you do
with no parts and no tools?
Luckily, the ONLY guy at the airport, who saw us out there on the ramp
working on the plane came out of his hangar and asked if we needed any
help.  He was a retired A&P just working on his own planes (he had 3 Cessna
195's - one complete and two projects - beautiful).  Allowed us to come to
his hangar and use his tools and equipment.  He was so funny.  Said he
could not work on the plane because he was retired and feared liability
issues but said we could use any of his tools and do whatever we wanted.
And he wouldn't even tell us what to do.  But he kept looking over our
shoulders and saying, "Not telling you what to do, but if it were me, I
would do this and that".  It almost became fun.  And of course he gave us
any kind of tool or supply we needed.  Eventually we pulled the Hobbs
sensor and replaced it with a plug for the flight home.

Our fuel stop became a 4 hour adventure and then we continued on our
journey home.  Aviation people are the best in the world.

motivational.  Thanks to all who helped, attended and educated.  Am
definitely looking forward to next year.

Welcome to the group Chris. Your project sounds exciting so please keep us
updated on your progress and your challenges as they arise.
It's a good thing you are looking at the Ford V8 conversion. Those Chevy
motors aren't any good at all. Ha ha.
