If I read the registration correctly - not the superimposed "K2NE", whatever
that's supposed to be - but on the empennage, it looks like N382L.  This
comes up as the KR-2 built by Lance Niebauer.  Currently registered
(questionably) to someone in Texas.

Don't know if anyone else wrote to the seller, but I did question him on
his ethics.  

He replied:   
These CDs were purchased by me at an airshow about a month ago. When
these are gone, that's it - and they are being sold under the Right of
Frst Resale and are not copies made by me. 

I also sent a note to Ebay questioning the legality of this guy selling
Rand Robinson's intellectual property.

You will note that the sale was ended.

This happens all the time.  There are bootleg plans being sold of about 
anything you could imagine on ebay.  Plans for things other than airplanes too.

I have bought a few plans on CD from ebay auctions with no intent to build the 
plane at all.  I just want to see how another designer has done something.  
Most drawings on CD are old out of date plans and I wouldn't think anyone would 
build these designs today.  I may be wrong, but I think the plans we are 
talking about here are the KR2, not the KR2S.  As I have said before, surely no 
one would start from scratch and build a KR2 as it was designed in the early 
70s.  The KR2S with new airfoils isn't really a KR2.  It is a different, much 
better bird with simularities as I see it.  

I rarely chime in so since I am now I want to THANK those who posted photos of 
the KR meet in IL.  It looked like a very good meet with great weather and even 
better airplanes!

It is up to RR to get their finger out and stick genuine sets of plans 
on CD and make them available via ebay or any other means. Mark Langford 
has probably helped sell hundred's of sets of plans - far, far more than 
RR have sold !

Perhaps it's up to one of you boys with the correct background to help 
her out by offering to scan plans etc.

I really don't think that snarling at someone who makes a few bucks out 
of spotting a market will actually sell a single set of genuine plans. 
If RR were to get together with Mark, and put a set of plans + all the 
good construction stuff on a CD it could be sold for $10 and would sell 
in the tens of thousands.

You may be correct, but it is a lot more difficult to copy a complete 
printed manual, than it is to burn a copy of the CD.

I do not have a computer in you workshop, or would I walk inside to read the 
plans off you computer, or just print each section out as you go, Or print 
the complete manual off the CD??
I like to be working on one item and reading up on another from the manual, 
home work or when I have some spare time.

Hard to do that off a CD.

Vans provide good documentation, plus as far as I know there is no such 
thing as a plans built RV6 ( apart from the very first one ).

The problem is that RR have been tardy in getting into computers 
internet etc.

How many genuine sets of plans get sold a year ? low hundreds I would 
guess - perhaps $40k a year.

Genuine $10 CD called "Build Your Dream Plane" with glossy pics of 
girlies drooling over the Tom Cruise look-alike pilot would sell 
thousands. Remember it's bloody difficult to print large scale plans, so 
Janet would still get reqs for sets of paper plans, and get to sell all 
the fancy bits that are ( or should be ) available from her web site.

I think in the "get real" world this is called marketing.

however, she has done more than some think in this area.  I talked to
her tonight and she did say she would not sell a CD due to problems with
pirating, such as what is happening now. Jeanette was in the office most
of today and took several calls.  One set of plans are even enroute to
Romania.  The KR certainly has become a popular international design due
to the economical method of building. She mentioned she was going to
start spending more time at the office to make sure things are being
taken care of. 

There is no question the evolution of the KR and the momentum of our
group has been enhanced by the hard work and willingness to R and
document progress by Mark Langford.  He has been an inspiration to us
all and has helped us improve the quality of construction of our KR's.
But this subject really has nothing to do with Mark. We should still do
the right thing when it comes to compensating Rand Robinson if plans are
to be purchased new.  Re-sale, when someone decides not to build is a
complete different animal and is not inclusive in this discussion. I
will say, and Dana can correct me if I am wrong, Van's charges you for a
registration change of RV plans owners/ builders. Jeanette does not that
I am aware of.

Bottom line is, if you want to build a plane, buy a legal set of plans
or design it yourself. In the end, only you can set the ethics and
integrity level for you. Can you look yourself in the mirror and not be
ashamed at what you see???

I called Janet today around 4pm CDT and she answered on the third ring. She 
remembered me, she remembered the man who started my project. She was able 
to answer my question that I asked the net last week on spacers that none of 
you guys could or did answer. She told me how to find out the things she 
couldn't answer. I was talking to Mrs. KR...!
We had a pleasent conversation about her trip to the Gathering and the 
Gathering. She talked to me like a friend and I have only met and talked to 
her one time and that was over a year ago when she gave my wife and I a ride 
to the airport.
Anyone that trys to take anything from this lady shouldn't try it within my 
reach.

I think this supports my point, the very fact that she remembers you sort
of  indicates that as a business, it's too personal, and Janet could make
more money by better exploiting the KR2 brand.

This is so often the case with inventions  - people get anal about giving
away a percentage of the revenue, so they try to do everything themselves
with the result that they do lots of things badly.

I can understand that Janet would feel terrible to lose control of
something which must be the love of her life - unfortunately businesses do
not run well on sentiment.

Again as I said right up front, I don't condone theft.
