HALLMARKS OF HOMEBUILDING -

KEN RAND'S COMPOSITE AIRPLANE, THE KR-1

Among the most talked about airplanes at the 1972 Oshkosh EAA Convention and
Fly-In was the Rand Robinson KR-1 created by Ken Rand of EAA Chapter 92 in
Huntington Beach, California. Not so much the airplane, which was so small
that some EAAers figured it had to be either a large RC model or some
over-indulgent father's taxiing toy for his child. What made the airplane
special-and what now accords it "Hallmark" status-is how it was put together
and what it was made out of.

We should contact EAA and let them know how many of us are flying KR's
there this year. Maybe, since they have HALLMARKED the KR, they would
designate us a special row to park in so we can all be together.
SO, how many are going to fly their KR to Oshkosh? Let me know and I
will see what I can do to get us a designated row.

Now we know the source of the info that the foam has no strength issue.
Polystyrene? BTW, if it was strong enough in Dynel, we could use less
fiberglass?

The EAA contacted Richard Shirley and asked him to bring his KR-1. Rich
asked if they helped with gas or anything. He was told all they would
give him is a parking place...

PS - The guy who bought my KR says again) he needs to sell because he
lost his hangar space and is having a problem getting out here to pick
it up. If anyone is interested in 902G, let me know. I have the EZ is
pretty close to flying so I now need the space in my hangar.

You suppose that Paul's having rediscovered his passion for grass roots
aviation is having an affect on Tom? I wonder if we can get some
special recognition next year at the 35th anniversary?

2008-10-12 Thread Robin Wills
So I'm not a goose for suggesting removing the foam after glassing,
given that it contributes little to the overall strength?

Dan Heath wrote: I wonder if we can get some special recognition next

I would love to have my KR at Oshkosh next year for the 35 anniversary
if I can find a way to get the FAA to recognise the rego and my pilot
certificate from Down Under...

Does anyone know if the FAA will recognise Australian Recreational
aircraft, not just the "normal" aircraft?

Cheers,
Rob.
