KR> KR2 For Sale

2017-01-31 Thread Matt Lenz via KRnet
Please go to Barnstormers to see my KR2 for sale. I need to dig out of a
financial hole, so please tell anyone you know who may interested in a
complete KR2 for $11,500.

This plane was built in 1995, has 164 hours and has been hanger stored since
2012 when it was last flown. I've owned it since 2014 but never have flown
it.

Now that I have put over 1100 hours on a KR2S, and almost 300 on a
KR2, I feel qualified to say that there is a pretty large difference
in pitch stability between the two. Yes, the KR2 is entirely
controllable, but then mine is flown at the very forward end of the CG
envelope. Having said that, I did PIOs (pitch induced oscillations)
for many of my first KR2 flights.

Jim Hill, who put several hundred hours on his KR2 before he broke it
in half and extended it to become a KR2S, once said "let go of the
stick?...You can't let go of the stick...YOU'LL DIE if you let go of
the stick!

By contrast, my KR2S is simply not an issue to fly. Keeping the CG
forward cannot be overstressed, either way. From my experience, any
speed penalty is practically impossible to quantify.

To answer the question of how to lengthen the horizontal stabilizer,
Troy Petteway did it (and reported a big improvement in stability) by
adding 6" onto the tips of the stab by simply adding foam, sanding to
shape, and wrapping with two or three layers of carbon fiber. That
plane is still flying, last I heard. He also decreased the size of
the elevator to lessen the over-control tendency. See
http://www.n56ml.com/troy/ for photos, both near the top and near the
bottom (actual construction of both horizontal stab mods and "new
airfoil" wings.

One thought on rebuilding the elevator is to simply cut it in half and
remove it, and built another one from the template set at the bottom
of http://www.krnet.org/as504x/ . Build the new h/s spar with a
"ship lapped" joint in the middle, with a widened bellcrank plate as a
metal splice joint. The aft deck is non-structural, so turning some
of that into a removable fairing will provide access to the bellcrank
for dealing with the hardware.

There are other ways to deal with it, but this is one way I'd consider...

Later designs resulted in the KR2S which has a longer fuselage length

discussion about this).

Since my A/C body is already built, option 2 is my only option. I know
one can get used to the sensitivity but in the early stages we that are
used to C172's struggle (so I am told). Having the CoG in the front also
helps.

I hope I answered your question?

KR> KR2 damaged elevator

2017-01-11 Thread Deon-tsrc via KRnet

Good day

I have a partially completed KR2 (original design) which i bought some
time ago. I need to complete the landing gear (removed the original
retracted type & replace with fixed), engine and instrument panel &
electrics. While hangered the elevator was basically destroyed when
someone drove into it.

I now need to rebuild the elevator completely. My problem is this one is
balanced so there is a counterweight attached to the spar inside body. I
need to remove it but will need to cut into some areas to access it.

What would be the best option? Cut into the side of the body? I think
this is structurally not good. Else remove the tail fin? Would not like
to cut the wooden spars at all! So will need to carefully need to cut
out skin/foam and not damage spars?

I was thinking that in the process I should reduce pitch sensitivity by
enlarging the tail area as well. So removing the aft spar of the
horizontal stabilizer and install a longer one.

2016-08-19 Thread colin hales

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy smartphone.
At 1.pm Alaskan time, 10.pm tonight in the UK, Colin Hales, a 46 year old
aircraft mechanic from Staffordshire, took off from Nome Airport, Western
Alaska and head further west. His intention was to cross the Bering Straights
and fly into Russian Federation Airspace, on Route to China. ?So what?? you may
ask? Well he set of in a tiny 22 foot wingspan aircraft that he built himself
and has been flying around the world and attending airshows with, since June
2014. No one has been permitted to fly through East Russian Airspace in a
private aircraft for about 8 years and no one has ever flown through Russian
Federation Airspace in such a small aircraft.

How Colin has managed to complete the complicated negotiations to obtain
transit permission from the Russian Federal Air Transport Authority and be
granted permission to land in the Chukotka Autonomous Region of Eastern Russia,
to continue on through to China, again nobody really knows. He wrote on his
facebook page that he intends to land at Anadyr, Magadan and Blagoveshchensk
Ignatyevo airport, on the Chinese border before continuing on into The Peoples
Republic of China to attend the 2016 Shenyang International Aviation Expo at
Faku Caihu Airport, 300 miles north east of Beijing. But apart from that there
is no more information. His chances of success must be minimal, as it probably
requires him to fly his tiny 15 foot long aircraft for over ten hours at a time
between those airports. He is completely unsupported by any outside means and
looks only to be supported in the cockpit by a team of soft toys...? With so
little known about the guy, the only way to follow his progress is to track him
on his website. If he arrives in China, it will surely be one of the major
flying achievements by a UK pilot for many years and he will probably have
quite a story to tell? Colin wrote an article for Pilot Magazine in June and
apparently they know all the details. Try contacting them for further
information.

KR> KR2 Project for sale

2016-07-20 Thread Skyflyr001 at aol.com

Hi,

I'm trying to help the family of my late friend and KR2 owner sell his
airplane. Due to his health issues he had not flown this aircraft in about 10
years. If you'll google KR@ Dumbo you'll find a link to a good article
about the original build of this airplane.

Here's what i've sent a couple of others who are interested in this
airplane. It's a complete airplane but since it hasn't flown in awhile I'd
consider it a project.

My friend who owned this aircraft passed away and I'm helping them to sell

it. After looking through the very detailed records I can pass along the
following information

KR2 serial number 7616. Completed Feb, 1, 1991. Registered as N90JC
although it looks like the registration expired in 2010 after new
legislation
required re-registration.

Total time 193.0. Last flown appears to be 3-21-1997.

Engine is a 2100 VW and it appears to produce 75hp.

Empty weight is 608#
Max GW is 1100#
Cruise is 155mph (5000msl @2850 rpm on 3.6 gph.)

fuel capacity is 13.5 gal with 12.5 useable.

The aircraft was purchased from the builder for $12,500 in April 1993.

The airplane has always been hangared. It is located at KPMU, Panola
county airport, in Batesville MS. It's about 50 miles south of Memphis, TN.

The family doesn't have a price in mind as they don't really know how to
value it but they are interested in moving it. I'm not personally
knowledgeable about this series of homebuilts but I would guess that somewhere
around 8-9K would be readily accepted. Of course after inspecting the
aircraft
you can be as aggressive as you'd like in an offer.

I'm sure a reasonable offer will get you a nice KR2 See the link below.

KR> KR2 landing video

2016-04-08 Thread Mark Langford

You guys are a tough crowd! This may look like a flat high speed landing,
but notice that I chopped the throttle to idle way before turning final. All
the noise you hear is wind noise, not engine noise.? The prop is probably
turning 1100 rpm, but the wind is helping it spin, since it's normally
idling at about 750 statically. I was gliding all the way in, and testing
has shown that best glide speed (around 85-90 mph) results in a 600fpm
descent rate, or 10' per second. That's not to say that I couldn't zoom in
and touch down, but not on this runway I can't. This was a slightly hot
landing though, because I have been able to get on the brakes hard and stop
at the halfway point a few times.

My normal landing is to do about 120 mph on downwind, fairly close to the
runway, then chop the throttle as I get to the 45 degree angle off the
approach end, then glide in the whole way. This is to simulate an engine
out landing, as I've learned that it's a real possibility! I can't slip the
KR2 nearly as steeply as I could the KR2S because of the small rudder, and I
guess I've gotten so good as estimating the end of the runway that I rarely
have to do that to get pretty close to the end. And maybe it's just that I
still lack the confidence that I had in N56ML.

I almost exclusively did three point "carrier landings" with N56ML at my
home airport (M38), but I could see over the nose a lot better, thanks to
the larger and taller canopy, and ground handling is so much better than
with this KR2. The short-coupling of the KR2 extends into the tailwheel
distance from the mains, so it's considerably more twitchy than a KR2S when
landing. So I land just fast enough to see over the cowling a bit better,
and to have better, smoother, and more predictable control using the rudder
than the tailwheel.

Another factor is the bad geometry of the rudder/brake pedals on this
plane...I have to be very careful to lower my feet so I push on the bottom
of the pedals to prevent braking at the same time. I'd fix this, but it's a
nightmare to do anything under the panel, and I can only reach those pedals
with my fingertips, and with only one hand, so that's not happening.
Another reason to make your front deck removable!

Although it looks like my canopy is cracked, that was just a big bug I hit
on takeoff. I always clean the canopy before takeoff, and this video was
after four touch and goes during one of the first warmish days of April, so
the bugs were out flying too.

Something else about the video is that it sounds like the engine is missing
when I turned onto my taxiway, but that's just wind noise freaking out the
camera mic. That engine never skips a beat...so far.

Mike Sylvester...you are welcome to drop in or fly over any time. You'll be
in good company if you beg off of landing...Pesak did that a few weeks ago.

As for the windsock, Larry, there may have been a slight tailwind, but it
beats staring into the sun on landing. The blinding sun is bad enough,
especially when I'm already having trouble seeing the runway, but that
strobe stuff just makes me crazy, so I avoid it. Besides, my hangar's at
the other end of the runway!

Since I'm a apparently a glutton for punishment, how about a touch and go
video at a "normal" size runway (KFYM, Fayetteville, TN)? This was a bumpy
day, with a little crosswind. See
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAjMsWMexjQ=youtu.be .

  NetHeads,

I finally got around to mounting a Sony SteadyCam video camera in the plane,
and have been shooting MP4s of a few takeoffs and landings. I posted one to
youtube last night, at https://youtu.be/y2PTrOBGAVU , if you want to take a
look. This is my home airport, only 40' wide and 2600' long, and the
taxiway to the hangar is only 12'. Note that I was on the brakes and the
rollout at the end was still pretty short.

Visibility for the camera is considerably better than for me, as it is
mounted higher than my eyeballs. This looks like a fast landing, but it's
just the wide angle view that does that. Actual touchdown was in the upper
fifties. Obviously these are wheel landings, as the canopy and cowling
arrangement leaves no hope of seeing where you're going otherwise, and the
runway is too narrow to use peripheral vision.

  More to come later...

Mark,

Did you elect to land with a very light tailwind for the benefit of
landing up-slope? You forgot to "paint brush" out the wind sock. :-)

Adding drag in the form of effective flaps or a speed brake changes
all that. I think Mark installed a speed brake on that KR so I too
was surprised on the rather flat approach.

Jim,
Load the Facebook app and go to search engine at the top.
Enter " Rand Robinson KR-2S aircraft" and it will take you to the home page.

This was started by Eduardo from Argentina and is not associated with Rand

If you go down you will see the posting by Josh Choitz ...KR2S 14$k

KR> KR2 for sale

2016-02-08 Thread n357cj

Jim - I found one post from Josh back in Mid October listing his tail dagger 2s
for 14000 dollars - 200 hours on it. It is on the Rand Robinson Kr Aircraft
home page ( not affiliated with the actual Rand Robinson Co. to the best of my
knowledge.

Postings for airplanes for sale are simply emails to the list. ?People
ask, and others volunteer their planes for sale. ?Old KR2 projects are
out there and relatively cheap, but even with flying KR2s, quality is
often an issue. ?A flying KR2S is rare indeed. ?As was mentioned, Josh
Choitz has one, and I'm sure it's a nice one, but the link that
KRnet.org points to has disappeared ("frozen", it says).

I don't think Rand Robinson has a Facebook page (they barely had a web
page), but I believe it was mentioned that Josh Choitz was advertising
his KR2S on HIS Facebook page. ?

KR> KR2 for sale

2016-02-04 Thread Randall Smith
Jim this is Randy Smith. I had 74372. Sold to Jerry Stern two years ago. He now
has 74372 and 74376.
I have Les Palmer's KR 2 with The bigger Subaru engine. It is a single seat. It
needs some fiberglass work and brakes worked on. Last time I flew it was last
year. Pulled the wings off so I could get my cruiseair and my 310 in the
hanger. I will let it go for $5000 if you want to come get it. There is no
radio transponder or ELT in the airplane. No negotiations good price just need
to get it out-of-the-way. Any less than that and I could parted out for more.
If you are interested call me at 940-368-7973 I am just north of Fort Worth at
T 67

KR> KR2 project for sale

2015-11-12 Thread Richard Kaczmarek
We have a KR2 project that has to go. It was a flying plane years ago but
the last owner lost interest and we don't have time. The airframe is
complete with some instruments but no engine. It does have an engine mount
for a VW conversion. Asking price is $2500 or make us an offer. It has got
to go. Does also come with its complete set of plans and bill of sale. The
project is located in South Carolina.

KR> KR2 Performance example

2015-09-13 Thread pk.smith at bigpond.net.au
Just for comparison,

I have a friend here with a tidy classic KR2 with the original retracts.
It has a Revmaster 2100 on it rated at 75HP (maybe at 4200rpm, but max rpm on
T/O is 3300 rpm, so probably 55hp)
Basic weight is 625# at the moment and with full fuel (95#) and Pilot(145#) his
usual MMTOW is a smidge under 900#.
He has the older aerofoil too so I think this is quite representative of that
model.
I didn't get his fuel burn but I remember doing an exercise converting the 55HP
back to FF using BSFC and it worked out to be close to what would be expected,
around 4G/H.
At 25'C he can climb at 900'/m and normal cruise 138m/h.(120kts).

I can only confer with what I know, which is my Jabiru 2.2 Kr2, 75 hp. It
drinks 26 litres at full power 6.5 us. My best cruise figures are at 18 litres
4.5 us per hour, so my cruise is still actually quite high at around 70%, at
120 mph. My kr only weighs 540 lb empty due mostly to the light engine and no
flaps or speed brakes or interior trim . All take off performance figures are
at max gross anyway, well in my book and every other certified aircraft book
they are. So at 900 lb (published MAUW)

KR> KR2 project for sale

2015-07-23 Thread David.Spencer at Parallon.com
Good morning all,

Several weeks back I sent an email indicating that I was helping the family of
Bryce Guenther, whom many of you knew, sell his KR2 plane after he passed away.
I've finally been able to get some pictures of the plane and you can view them
here.

https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/0B5mM7KNJG1qFflJLbmpyOHlZMWRXeUw5ZEIwdDhvVmxNTEw3Mk9wcGxnVVFTM1hiREltOFU

This is definitely a project as you can see. We still don't have much other
information as there is no paperwork that we can find. I was able to confirm
that there was a nose gear collapse during a taxi test many years back and you
can see his repair of the cowling area, which needs work. The plane is located
in Fredericktown, Missouri about 60 minutes south of St. Louis. You can see a
trailer in one of the pictures that he fabricated to move the plane, which
would be included. I am open to any offers. Essentially I would consider this
as a Lycoming 235 engine for sale with a free plane attached. Some people like
projects.

Thanks for your consideration,

It would be impossible to find a rudder that would match your hinge
spacing close enough to mount on your aircraft. If your rudder has
slight damage simply repair the damage. If your rudder has major
damage, cut off the foam and glass and rebuild using the wood in your
current rudder. It should be a quick fix.

Has original retract gear installed with wheel & brakes. All the premolded
fiberglass top pieces and wing tips. Control stick, cables, aluminum control
components and tail surfaces. All spars and attachment fittings. It also
has a Continental A-65 with motor mount. Not sure about its condition other
than mags are gone. Has oil tank and Stromberg carb. If anyone is looking some

Hello KR Community,

I have had some different interests in Bob's project and wanted to let you
all know that I would be willing to sell the project without the engine.
Just make me a fair offer for the project is all I ask and I will worry
about selling the engine separately.

Also, if any of you are involved in your local flying clubs or EAA
chapters, please let them know this project is for sale.

Thank you for your time.

KR> KR2 worldtour.

2015-05-28 Thread colin hales
Hi there,
I've returned to the Uk to feed the cat, leave it another mound of cat food and
empty the litter tray.I'll be back in the USA and back with the plane, which is
in upper New York state, on the 16th June.
If I continue on my journey, which is not that certain, with Russian, Japanese
and Chinese issues still to resolve, then I leave the USA via Alaska early
August, when there is the best supposed weather.
So if I attend the gathering or Oshkosh again, then something has gone very
wrong with my worldtour. While I could travel around America for many more
years to see it all, and return to Oshkosh and attend the KR2 gathering, I've a
lot of other places I want to see and lots of other things I want to do, so I
have to move on.
I'm working on a new web site, when it is up and running I'll link it on here.
Blue skies.
Colin.

KR> KR2 World tour.

2015-05-27 Thread Jeff Scott
I met Colin at the KR Gathering in September, but really didn't get a chance to
talk to him. I ran in to Colin again at the CopperState EAA Fly In near
Phoenix again in October where we got a chance to chat a bit and I got to see
Colin's presentation. As of then, I believe Colin was planning to attend Sun
'N Fun, then travel North up the East Coast, then across the Northern States
before flying to Alaska, then ultimately across the northern Pacific from the
Aleutians, to Russia, Japan, and China before winging his way back across
Europe. I believe Colin said he had a speaking engagement in China for some
time this summer, so I would expect him to be leaving the lower 48 and be on
his way to Alaska about now or very shortly.

I saw this on Barnstormers:

hit "search" hit "experimental" hit "KR aircraft"
There is a KR2S project for sale in the San Diego area for $5200
I talked with the owner Dean Randolph and went over to see the stuff.
He has a pretty complete kit there (no engine or instruments) but has lots of
the really good parts:

wing skins

landing gear
http://www.nvaero.com/diehl-complete-tri-gear-kit-with-wheel-pants-fairings/
$2800

what appears to be "Grove" landing gear legs:

canopy around $450?
Header tank $
2 wing tanks $???

The fuselage could use a lot of TLC but has all of the metal parts built and
installed (very nice workmanship)

This appears to be worth a lot to the right person
Give him a call

it was coming along very nicely. He changed the spars for the new
airfoil, but the length and width of the fusalage were standard KR.

KR> KR2 and IFR

2015-01-25 Thread gary.shubert at charter.net

KRs in IFR

I have been flying SOFT IFR for about 10 years and VFR only for about
5 years before that and all I can say is ANY aircraft regardless of
how equipped is a VFR ? Day aircraft if the pilot is not competent
for IFR.

The type of aircraft, instrumentation and navigation systems just
does not make much of a difference if the PIC is not proficient in
using the equipment he / she left the ground with. That also includes
the various GPSs available today as aids for VFR operation. Google
Cory Lidle and East River Crash. I pulled the same stunt in a rented
172 while messing with a panel mounted GPS I was not experienced with.
Fortunately a charter pilot in the Hudson ratted me out by tail number
and JFK Approach ?politely? gave me vectors back to the Hudson and
a number for me to call after I landed.

I have owned either whole or in part a 152, 172 and a PA38 (yes Jeff
Scott) and flew all of them as a single pilot in soft IFR. Why you
might ask? To create OPTIONS for when things did not go the way I
planned or when I wanted to fly at night with poor visibility of the
horizon.

I plan to make my KR2 IFR capable with the type of equipment I am
comfortable with steam gauges (yes it is heavier than the new glass
cockpit stuff). I still maintain my IFR Currency and let my favorite
CFII beat me up under the hood frequently. Should you do the same
That?s up to you, but know and evaluate the risks. I have made
modifications similar to Jeff Scott for stability and some of my own
creation as this is experimental aviation, but in my case the KR2 is
built as a single. Even if I was built like Langford and I am NOT it
still would be a single place EXPERIMENTAL aircraft

KR> KR2 N541RY unfinished for sale or parting out.

2014-12-27 Thread Sergey Filippychev
Hello, every one,
I bought this original KR2 from Ross Youngblood 10 years ago, but never touch
it seriously.
So, after it was collecting hangar dust more than a decade I decided to sell it
in good hands, or part out.
It is "almost" finished and , I think, needs 100 hours more to finish flaps,
elevator trim and reinforce canopy hinge. All rest is functional and I did
couple taxi on it.
I have two other flying planes and this one just makes hangar overcrowded. It
has basic VFR instruments, Com and Nav radio, Transponder. Electrical and
Mechanical job done very well, exterior 7 of 10.
Engine VW 1.8L 4 hours, starter, Throttle Body. Always was hangared.
Located: Richland WA, RLD
Asking $6,500
Thanks,
and
Happy New Year every one!
Sergey.

KR> KR2 to KR2S conversion?

2014-08-29 Thread Gary Wold
I'm a new member to the KR list. I was building a Cozy Mk 4 but recently
decided my new retirement budget could not support such a project so selling
the materials this week. Very difficult decision.

I've followed the KR2 since 1980 and decided to build the KR2S after Mark's
EAA webinar and the forum at Oshkosh. Along this line, I have a question
for the group..I have a set of KR2 plans from 1981 and am wondering if it is
possible - or even reasonable - to modify these plans to a KR2S?

I searched the archive for any related information but got no hits so if
this has previously been discussed, I apologize for the question but would
appreciate suggestions as to where I might find the info.

Thanks

KR> Kr2 at Oshkosh.

2014-08-20 Thread colin hales

Hi there again.
Sorry to write twice, I don't think I wrote in time to get included in
yesterday or today's list.
but I just wanted to make entirely clear... I'm the only person at fault. Me
and my demons.
The EAA organisers and staff at Oshkosh did ... NOT ... know I was coming.
It was turning into a battle and a race against time.
With out getting spiritual here, but I'm not the luckiest guy on the planet. I
knew, as soon as I told the EAA I was on my way to Oshkosh, it would have
instantly doomed my journey to complete failure. Heck I only just made it as it
was.
I had been stuck in Iceland 3 weeks with weather, delayed with a broken oil
cooler in Greenland. Blown off my feet in Canada, I sincerely thought with just
3 days to go before the END if the show and being thousands of miles away, I
was glad I hadn't told the EAA, because I would have looked foolish as there
was no way the weather was going to sort itself out and I wouldn't cook the
engine trying to limp the aircraft there without an oil cooler.
But...
Anyway, top result, EAA looked after me amazingly while I was there. Kermit
Meeks hangar, to do the work on renewing the oil cooler.
So, lets just make the best of thing.
The KR2 doesn't have the best reputation, well not in my country. I'm not
travelling to try to change this or travelling for 'World Piece' or to 'Save
the whale', the Kr2 I built when I was younger and I'm travelling in it just
because I am. But in travelling with my Kr2, people see it, and nothing needs
to be said. I've overheard people say, "Can't be all that bad if he flew all
that way!" Job done... Don't need to pressure or push or persuade. Seeing is
believing.
So, I'm writing an article for our association back home, I'll send a copy to
the EAA, I hope they might consider publishing it. its entertaining, that's all
you can hope to do, get someone to read something positive about Kr2's or grass
routes aircraft that's slightly different. Heck some of the things that
happened that I've talked to people about, have them falling over and telling
me I'm making it up... you get people to read and think, I enjoyed that, I'll
read another. Again, job done...
So, all smiles people, and as you do like to say... "Have a good day!"
Regards Colin.

Each set of plans whether sold by Jeanette Rand or Steve Glover have a serial
number specific to that builder. When I acquired my partial project, I called
Jeanette and had that serial number transferred to me. If you make up a serial
number, it might have already been assigned to someone else's project.
Check with Steve, he may be able to transfer it to you.

I purchased a semi completed KR2S without any plans. In order to register it, I
need a new set of plans with a serial number. Can anyone give me a direct link
to the best place I should purchase plans for it. I am from South Africa.

Kind regards,
