KR>problems with KRnet?

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Langford
NetHeads,

Although I haven't actually seen it myself, I've gotten reports from Dan and
Ed that they've tried to send messages to KRnet several times, and they
never got through. Has anybody else sent messages that didn't get through?
I suppose as a test, anybody sending messages to KRnet is welcome to CC me
on it. When you have a message that was send to both me and the list, and
only I get it, that says a lot to the folks who are trying to 1) prove that
they have a problem, and 2) might help them to solve it.

So for the next couple of days, CC me on your messages and we'll see how big
a problem we have. The funny thing is that nobody on CorvAircraft has
mentioned a problem.

Mark and others. I have seen both Dan's and Ed's post recently. I honestly
feel that traffic on the KR Net is just slow right now. May be a lot of
folks are away this week being Memorial Day. Also, in your e-mail settings
there is an option which allows you to not receive e-mail from yourself.
Those not getting their own mail may want to check their settings.

Hi everyone,
I too am having problems with sending e-mail to the net. I believe that
this occurs when I create a new message and not a reply.
And with that I want to ask if anyone knows what port to use on a venturie
for a DG?I got my new one from A/S yesterday and it didn't come with
installation instructions. It has two ports. I,m sure I block off the unused
port but I would like to know if there is a difference.

KR>problems with KRnet?

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Langford
Well, I sent one an hour ago, repying-to one of Dan's many messages that
didn't make it to the list. This time I'm replying-to Larry's that DID make
it, so that may be the ticket. Either way, it looks like I have one more
thing to do today. I know you guys are tired of this, but I may just bring
the old kr...@mailinglists.com back up and subscribe everybody on this list
to that one, if I can. I have about 10 messages already that I was cc'd on
from Dan, Ed, and others, that made it to me, but not to the list. Houston,
we have a problem here.

Just in case this one makes it, I'll cut and paste it below:

I've looked for the perfect mufflers for my Corvair engine for months, but
everything I find is big, heavy, and expensive. Just for kicks, I thought
I'd check out stock VW air-cooled Beetle tailpipes. They fit my 1.5"
stainless exhaust tubing perfectly with their 1.375" outside diameter (I
might not ever get them out though), merely act as a chrome-plated exhaust
extension, weigh 9 ounces each, and cost $2.75 a piece!

Although they will not be tested for performance until later on this summer,
right now I have no doubt that these will quieten the engine considerably,
while also protecting the bottom of the plane (NACA ducts) during extended
ground-run testing. There's a photo at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/03052321m.jpg . Note the zillion
wires to the left, which are instrumentation for the Engine Information
System, which is now outdated by a new and improved system, but will still
work nicely for what I need.

Today I'm working on the aluminum intake system and trying to finish up the
dual stick setup. That and a new puppy, a funeral, and a softball game
with the 8 year-olds...

Hi all

Is everyone posting their messages to kr...@mylist.net ?

I am wondering why we don't just use yahoo groups. I run two or three
yahoo mailing lists and it just keeps working with no problems. Their
service is free although there is some advertising. They also provide
plenty of space for uploading files, photos etc. Maybe we shouldn't
try to muddy the waters at this time but it is a serious alternative.

KR>problems with KRnet?

2008-10-12 Thread Phil Maley
Hi Phil, Dan

Although it is possible to set up an email list on almost any ISP
using freely available list management software, I think to do so
would just open up another can of worms. Mark has done a great job of
keeping us all together on krnet and I have complete faith that he
will find a way to get the present system stabilised. I really only
suggested Yahoo groups as a back-stop in case the mylist.net service
couldn't recover from its problems.

Is it still possible that we don't actually have a problem? My
messages and at least some others seem to be going through ok. I've
noticed a huge drop-off in email generally over the past couple of
weeks. Maybe people are concentrating on other things at the moment.

I really don't know what to do. The old list at mailinglists.com worked
flawlessly for two years before it just went belly-up for 4 days, but it's
back and working fine now. All I have to do is uncheck a couple of boxes
and we could migrate back to that one in a heartbeat and leave this one in
the dust. I'm not real impressed with the service we've gotten here. I've
emailed them with about 10 messages and gotten exactly one reply from a
human saying "we'll check into that". Of course service wasn't that great
from the previous list either, but then we never needed it either. This
list has a lot of handy bells and whistles, but people have always had
problems getting signed up for it (which is a hassle for me), and now with
most of the messages disappearing, we need to do something different because
it's just not getting the job done.

I have a personal hangup with yahoo groups. Even if Yahoo doesn't sell your
email address to others, you address is just sitting out there for the
pickin' by the marketer's search engines. This list and the last were
"private" lists, and unless you're a member, you don't have access to the
member list, and even then, they are painful to extract (ask me how I know).
I'm working on my third week with new email address, and haven't had a
single spam message yet! I'd like to keep it that way. And the endless
advertising, popups, banner ads, and having to scroll down through it all to
get to the actual message just makes me crazy.

I AM convinced that there is a problem with this list though. Although only
a couple of guys have cc'd me on messages that were sent to the list, at
least ten (that I know of) made it to me, but not the list, which absolves
their ISP, and strongly suggests a problem at mylist.net. And I've sent
serveral myself that didn't make it. I'm assuming that the folks at
mylist.net are on vacation this weekend, but will jump on this on Tuesday
morning. Maybe we should give them until Wednesday or so to figure it out
before we jump ship. Also, if we keep trying to use the system, we might
find more clues to help them identify the problem.

One difference between this time and the last time is that I have a list of
everybody's email address that is on this list, and can easily send a
message to all subscribers, regardless of whether the list is working or
not. Although it would be a hassle for me to add folks back to the old list
myself, I could send a message telling folks to resubscribe, and how to do
it, so nobody should be left behind.

After Wednesday, we'll think of something, but I'm certainly open to
suggestions...

Mark,
I agree with you that we should wait till Wednesday to see if it can be
resolved. Absolutely NO to Yahoo or other freebies which bombard us with
advertisement and spam. If this list does not get corrected promptly by the
people at Mylist then by all means let's go back to Mailinglist. After I
joined Road Runner, I did not receive any spam for over a year and now I get
it almost daily. You know, if I had helped all those foreigners needing a
bank to put their millions in, I could be the richest man in America by now.

KR>problems with KRnet?

2008-10-12 Thread Patrick Driscoll
Mark,
I'm for waiting and giving the list a chance. Might just be some little
bug that can be worked out in an hour or so. If not, then we can go back to
the old list or whatever.

KR>problems with KRnet? Yahoo

2008-10-12 Thread Philip Maley
Just a quick note about Yahoo groups.

There is a lot of misconception about their service. Actually I defy
anyone to extract another user's email address from Yahoo providing
that user has indicated their address should be kept private when they
registered. I don't believe I have received any spam as a result of
use of Yahoo over several years. In fact there is greater risk of
getting added to spam lists via the existing krnet. If you look
through the krnet archives you will find almost everybody's email
address listed in the body of various messages. It doesn't take a
genious to extract those addresses and add them to spam lists.

Yahoo do use advertising to pay for the service but in my experience
the imposition is quite bearable for the service they provide. I would
definitely support going across to yahoo groups.

Before we make an decision, one thing to consider is the file upload
feature of Yahoo. Yes, it is true you can upload files for everyone to look
at with a generous amount of space. However, to look at the files, you need
to have a "Yahoo email address". That email address needs to subscribe to
the mailing list as well. I don't think all of us want to get one just to
use that feature. So any weight that feature adds in our decision, is
non-existent.

Yes you do need to register with yahoo but you don't need to ever use
the yahoo email address. I am registered on about 10 yahoo email lists
with my own normal address and they all send emails to me the same as
krnet does. It can be set up to send plain text with no attachments
allowed etc. And the list controller has full control over all the
settings.

Gentlemen:

Let's allow the list manager to make those decisions,
that's what he gets the big bucks for (humor)
and we can get back to discussions related to

Memorial Day and settings have nothing to do with it. I can post to
Corvaircraft and send messages to my self with no problems.
I'm going to post a test to krnet now and see if is working for me again.
