New address for the ooo-L10N mailing list
As part of the post-graduation migration, the address of the ooo-L10N mailing list has just been changed by Infra. The new address is: L10N@openoffice.apache.org There's no need to reconfigure anything (except perhaps filters in your mail client). The old address will still work. Replying to old discussions/messages will work with no need to modify anything. The list membership is unchanged. Website updates can wait until all lists have been migrated, since the old addresses still work. Regards, Andrea.

Well, if you are translating PO files you can also send them to us directly, without the extra step of uploading them to Pootle. This is done by creating an issue in Bugzilla, similar to https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121195 if you need any assistance, just ask (you can register an account in Bugzilla). unfortunately I couldn't find anybody to help me about the 3.4.x translation. I have written three forums. but no answer. Where? Anyway, ask here and you will always get an answer. if anybody opens the pootle service and suggests a word or a sentence, I will write the url link of pootle service to the forums. Maybe someone will try. It is unclear to me what you are suggesting here. Since we have no way to ensure that contributions are coming from a trusted source (like you) we tend to avoid to ask people to make anonymous contributions in Pootle for the time being. You should translate both yellow and blue, which correspond to fuzzy and untranslated respectively. You get "fuzzy" (yellow) when our automated systems managed to find a similar string/sentence (but they should be reviewed, since the proposed string will be the translation of a similar string, but not necessarily of that exact string); you get "untranslated" (blue) when the string/sentence is totally new. In both cases, you should translate the string. And, in both cases, you might want to leave the string in a "fuzzy" state to make it easier for someone else to review your translations. So, if we are discussing Basque and you would like to start a discussion about Tamil, it's better that you create a new message to l10n@openoffice.apache.org with a subject like "Tamil translation", otherwise it may happen that your message is buried in the discussion about Basque translation and thus less visible. The pages you have seen are currently unmaintained, but we will be happy to make any changes you suggest. Just note that the HTML you see is then embedded in a site template which adds elements and a header, so some changes are easily done and some are quite hard. Of course, without knowing if the screenshot I posted looks right or wrong, and without any specific details from you on how to fix it, it's hard to try and fix the pages. If you could at least send the relevant CSS and font file (it's important to know its license too) we can have a look. So if you have them in Icelandic in 98% of the text, just leave them in Icelandic and follow that convention (i.e., translate to Icelandic) for the remaining 2% too. Italian, for example, has them translated too: https://translate.apache.org/it/OOo_34_help/source/text/scalc.po/translate/ I believe that the "name" attribute is never displayed explicitly and is used only for cross-linking, so it should be fine to leave it in English, but localizing it won't harm. Please report on your translation status
We have until 31 December or shortly after to complete the translations for new languages to be released in January. An amazing number of volunteers showed up, but it is time to check the status of ongoing translations. I would like to complete https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+3.4.1+Respin+for+additional+languages by adding a status for each of the following translations. Could volunteers (at least, those who already received PO files) say how we should consider their translation? - ABANDONED: they won't have time until the end of 2012, so we will reassign the translation to the next volunteers who show up - READY TO START: no work has been done yet, but the translator is available and just needs some guidance/coordination/time - ONGOING: in this case, we will direct to them all new volunteers who join, so that it is possible to split work - COMPLETED: so far, I think we have Danish, Polish (aside from some integration fixes to be done) and Scottish Gaelic ready. Has any other volunteer/team completed their work? You are currently helping with the (important) task of translating/fixing the http://www.openoffice.org/ta website. This has nothing, really nothing, to do with translating the OpenOffice program into Tamil. PO files are only needed to translate the OpenOffice program into Tamil. This is what Kannan and SR Kumar will hopefully start now. Documentation for working with PO files is available at http://openoffice.apache.org/translate.html but, again, it is not needed for what you (Kadal) are currently doing. Of course, if after the website you have time to help with the program translation I think your help will be welcome there too! OK, I won't produce the "easy" packages until we agree on this. But
really, the overhead on us is minimal and the impact on a translator who
has never seen PO files is large: if we only keep those PO files where
there is something to translate, and ignore those that are fully
translated, we reduce the number of files by 50-80% and things are much
more manageable for volunteers who need to track/reassign translations.
I think the used tools for offline translation can take care of already
translated strings.
Note that I never mentioned strings. I removed 100% translated files,
not strings. This means that doing so we save translators the effort to
open (or assign) 100-200 files that actually need no work and would be
delivered back exactly as they are.
And the overhead on us is:
- before delivering the files, run something like (e.g., if you have a
subdirectory named "he" with all PO files for Hebrew)

True, no volunteers so far complained that we sent them too many useless
files. But, especially for minor releases, I would consider this
approach again.
But it is no big problem, I just want to mention that with the upcoming
update for AOO 4.0 we will remove unused string anyway.
This is a different topic... but very good to do so, this will help
volunteers too.

As far as I can judge, you have forgotten that files with "fuzzy" marked
messages also needs to be looked at.
No, the output that is filtered is something like
he/desktop/source/deployment/misc.po strings: total: 3 | 2t 1f 0u |
66%t 33%f 0%u
so these files would still be included in the package, since I filter
out only those that have 100% translated (and, consequently, 0% fuzzy
and 0% untranslated).
and hopefully we only have about 40 files for 4.0 (still work in progress).

The "communication problem" is that this time we didn't manage to get Juergen's builds and Ariel's builds available at the same time, which unfortunately means that Linux builds will be available either with some delay or directly at the next snapshot. Hi, honestly I don't know when the test build (i.e., preparing the test versions) will start, but my recommendation would be that you continue anyway, keeping the "helpcontent2" folder last (it has less priority, focus on the UI, i.e., all other folders, first) and, of course, keeping basic/source/app.po untranslated. Indeed Korean shipped with no dictionary in 3.3.0 (no language pack either, but I checked the full build too); and indeed the extension it is linked to is no longer online, but search engines reveal that there is still a version at http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/node/4237 which installs cleanly. Below you find a script to do the same for other languages if you need, and if you prefer to take dictionaries from the shipped binaries rather than going back to the HG repository and digging. But it won't always work, since for example the "nb" version contains a dictionary for "no" (which means "nb"+"nn") and this breaks some assumptions, so you may need to do some steps manually at times. Actually, if you see the URL where we download the English dictionary from, it's clear we are not enforcing this rule... Maybe it's possible for our native speakers to review the dictionaries that are available in the repo. And maybe it somebody is interested to maintain the Swedish one and upload it in the repo. It took longer than expected because the Extensions site is smart enough to detect, upon upload, if another extension with the same ID is available and this allowed some nice findings. You may want to port both 1434968 and 1434960, since we were incorrectly using "no" to identify Norwegian builds (we build either nb or nn, and for 3.4.1 we will build only nb; but the dictionary is called "no" to mean that it contains both nb and nn).
