As I have posted before, The Lace Museum sells small jars of Orvus, and I
I always bring a couple of them with me when I arrive in London in late
April. I am there all summer and can post to a UK address.
However, my daughter will be coming to California for Christmas and so if
someone truly needs Orvus sooner than next spring, I could send a jar back to
London with her when she returns in January. Orvus is very gentle. I would be
less confident of washing lace with a cheap shampoo even if the ingredients
seem to be the same.
Anyone who needs the product urgently can contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
we will work out the details.

[lace] a new Arachnid from Italy

Hi All!
I’m Bianca, a new Arachnid from Italy.. Hope to be useful in some way. ‘My
field’ is ‘needle lace’ but I’m not an expert. Studying needle lace
(Aemilia Ars in Bologna) I met Elisa Ricci and now the life of E.R and
obviously lace history in the first years of ‘900 is more important in my
mind. I’m very interested to other lace-experts, for example Carolina
Amari ( you know that with Florence Colgate she founded a lace school in New
York ), and to all american women who collected italian lace (E.R. wrote
somewhere they were a little bit ‘crazy’ because they spent too much
money to buy italian laces…).
I asked to some editors for reprinting E.R.’s books. All of them replied:
too difficult, too money… but now, with ‘Old Italian Lace’ on the Web
I’m very very happy and, again, I thank Tess and Prof.Ralph E.Griswold. They
work for all of us.
I’ll be glad to share with you all I know.

[lace] 17 th century bobbins

2003-10-24 Thread Neil Keats
The Dutch ship "Batavia" was wrecked off the West Australian coast in 1629 and fewer
than
80 of the passengers and crew survived. Articles recovered from the ship are in the
West
Australian Museum and include two wooden lace bobbins. The bobbins and a corroded
pair of
scissors were featured on an Australia Post 90c. stamp issued in 1985. The replica
ship
of the Batavia was in Sydney in 2002 and many of the members of the NSW Branch of The
Australian Lace Guild demonstrated lace making on board to the visitors. One of the
local
Kurri Kurri group has copies of the bobbins made by some enterprising bobbin turner. A
friend in my woodturning club gave me a piece of wood from the Batavia wreck. It is
hard,
heavy, dark red and cranky grained and one day I will make a copy of the bobbins from
it.
If anyone wants a look at the bobbins on thestamp I can scan them and send the
scan to them.

[lace] Springetts and Fountains etc

2003-10-24 Thread Aurelia L. Loveman
Springetts are the most marvelous people in the world. For many years they
ran the British College of Lace, in Rugby; and they made the most beautiful
bobbins. Christine's specialty is Beds lace, and there are some excellent
videos by her, for beginner, intermediate and advanced Beds lacemakers. She
has also got some charming books out: as, "Lace for Children of All Ages,"
"Designing and Mounting Lace Fans," and other things. A few years ago,
they retired from the College :( :( :( and sold their lace supplies
business to Linda Fountain. But they give a number of workshops each year;
Christine teaches Beds, and David teaches bobbin-making, and they both
spread their sweet and dear and inspiring presences wherever they go, and
whoever knows them loves them. -- Aurelia

RE: [lace] Springetts and Fountains etc

2003-10-24 Thread Panza, Robin
Christine and David Springett used to have a lace supplier business. She
also designed patterns and taught, and he also turned bobbins. They ran a
lace school (English Lace College, or something like that) and made videos,
too.

A few years ago, they sold off the lace supplier business, to and
Jeremy Fountain. So the lace suppliers are now the Fountains, but they
carry David's bobbins, Christine's patterns, and their videos. As far as I
know, the lace school is still going.

So "Fountains" refers to the suppliers, and "Springett" refers to products
made by Christine and David.

I think the "Madam/Sir" letter is rather touching, at least in its earnest
(and on the whole, very successful) effort to cope with English. Don't you
think the word "static" (the "unique static bobbin lace exhibition") must
have been fished out of some Russian-English dictionary as a meaning for
whatever the Russian is for "permanent?" So it's a permanent lace exhibit!
Remember when we were all going so crazy, last year, about Vologda lace?
I'll bet that this static exhibit has got plenty of Vologda laces in it.
Any Arachnids finding their way to Russia any time soon will doubtless come
back home ec-static (sorry! sorry! I couldn't resist) -- Aurelia

[lace] Re: Lace tools in 16th century

2003-10-24 Thread ervo
While you find 17th century lacepillows on paintings you have to go to engravings
to find the few 16th century examples.

Lacemaking as we know it was getting established at that time. The lacepillows
are of very different forms, suggesting that the tools used for different
older types of plaiting were still used.

Tamara told about the two lacemakers to be found on the cover of:

Tornehave, Bodil: Danske Frihåndskniplinger. Notabene,
Copenhagen 1987. ISBN 87-7490-291-1.

"Nüw Modelbuch" was published in 1561 and you can find the whole facsimile
in:

Burkhard, Claire: Faszinierendes Klöppeln "Nüw Modelbuch" 1561.
Paul Haupt, Bern 1986. ISBN 3-258-03610-1

Some of the forerunners of lacepillows can be seen in Mrs. Palliser on page
91 Fig. 43 and page 110 Fig. 50.

If you look at M. Dreger's Entwicklungs-Geschichte der Spitze (on the Professor's
site), you can see another strange lacepillow on Abb. 21, it should be from
about 1587.

There is a much more normal lacepillow in a Flemish book by Martine Bruggeman.
Tamara will you share the photo you recently took of the engraving by Jan
Saenredam after Hendrik Goltzius? It should be from the 3rd quarter of the
16th century.

These are the examples I have, has anybody any more?

Stretching the 16th century a few years, there is actually an example I
have found.

Take a look at page 22 of the OIDFA Bulletin 1993/4. In 1603 Alessandro
Allori painted an Annunciation, where the Virgin Mary had put her lacepillow
aside. Her bobbins were the 'flute' bobbins of the low-warp loom. The lacepillow
is a bolster type in a basket.

Greetings

Vibeke in cold and dark Copenhagen

There's a continental spangled bobbin on ebay described as:

"Lovely Victorian Honiton Lace Spool. Being treen with coloured glass

As the seller's in the UK, I'd be surprised if they don't know that Honiton
is in Devon, in the South West corner of England and not in the East
Midlands. Obviously doesn't know what an East Midlands or a Honiton bobbin
looks like. He/she appears to have picked up words from other sellers and
put them together. If that's the case, I'm surprised the word 'bobbin'
doesn't appear instead of 'spool' though.

Done; I've uploaded the photo to my web page (oooh, I feel so
"computerally cool" ). URL in signature. Click on "lacemaker",
that'll bring the thumbnail; click on the thumbnail to get the
full-sized photo (such as it is ).

I made the big photo very big (bigger than screen size, you have to
scroll), because it's not very good; the print was behind glass, and
I'm not all that skilled with the digital camera... The print was in
the Metropolitan Museum (New York) in August, on loan from the
Rijksmuseum (the Hague?) as part of the Goltzius exhibition. I expect
it's back home now.

Even with poor quality of the photo, you can still see the pillow and
the bobbins fairly clearly. The bobbins resemble the Danish ones --
skinny, and with that bulb at the bottom. Definitely made for he
purpose, and a long way from the ones on the Tornehave's book; those
look like the originals from which the "Horror kit" took its ideas .
Saenredam's dates, BTW, were given as "ca 1565-1607"

The bobbin itself seems to be equally mixed up :) Its tail looks
Swedish, but Swedish bobins usually have single heads; Bayeux bobbins
have double heads (like Midlands), but their tails are different --
they widen at the bottom instead of narrowing... Even before the
spangle was added (for a truly international mix ), it would have
been hard to, er... make head or tail of it... And I wonder what makes
the seller think it's Victorian; calling it "treen" (instead of just
plain "wooden") doesn't make it old...

Yes, I think so too. I wonder whether the 1000 pieces are all actually

"available" -- in drawers (as in Luton) or on pull-out boards (as in

The gifts are supposed to be tokens of friendship, not expensive items.
Favorite things to send are candy, chocolate, tea, bobbins, thread,

4. Phone number

5. Name and email of friend/relative for emergency use

6. Preference for same country or overseas pal. (Remember, overseas
has larger postage costs and takes longer to be delivered.)

7. Affirmation of the following statements:
_I have read and understand the rules of participating.
_I will mail my packages by the 5th of each month.
_I will email a thank you to lace-chat when a package is received.
_I will notify the coordinator immediately if something will
prevent mailing my package on time or if I have to withdraw.
_I understand that I will be summarily removed from the round
if I fail to fulfill my agreement.

8. Give a brief bio of yourself to assist your Pal in selecting items
for you -- stage in life, family, pets, favorite activities, favorite colors,
types of lace you make or like, pierced ears or not, food allergies or diet
restrictions (no nuts, sugar, chocolate, etc), preference for Christmas or
Hannukah or Solstice greetings, preferred bobbin styles if you do BL, and
anything else you wish to share. Also please make a note if there are
any import restrictions your pal should know about.

RULES

1. Please be prompt in mailing by the 5th of each month so that your secret
pal gets the package by the 15th of the intended month. It is depressing
to expect a package and not get one. If you must be late, email me before
the mailing deadline ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) so your special pal can be notified.

2. Include a real, usable return address, not your own. Mine will be fine
for USA use. Overseas please find a friend who will let you use his/hers.
All packages need a return address in case of delivery problems.

3. When the package arrives, as soon as possible post a brief note to
LACE-CHAT (not Lace!!!) to say Thank You. This lets your sending pal know
that it was safely received. It's not necessary to write a long message--
just acknowledge the package. You can send your thank you messages to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] even if you don't take chat.

4. Pack carefully. A padded bag may not protect a fragile item. Liquids
aren't good in containers going overseas, and are not recommended in any
package.

5. If you have not received a package by the 20th, tell the administrator
so she can find out what has happened. If a person cannot continue the
exchange, the pal will be given to someone else so he/she will not be left
out. Please let the administrator know if you cannot continue.

 6. It is nice to include (or send separately) a personal note to your
secret pal. Be aware, a letter included inside a package could cost extra
postage, at least in the USA. You may choose to send the letter in an
envelope separately.

7. Enjoy!! It's fun to send mystery packages, and to receive them.
