The big influx kept coming for about three months, but even after that stuff still tricked through for a couple of months. What staggered me too was the horrific postage people incurred in sending stuff airmail from overseas. Gift certificates would be a much more practical idea, especially for those outside the USA. Shame we can't get Holly or Susan to subscribe to PayPal. I've been using it for some time now (several overseas people made gifts to Jenny via PayPal and my account). I am also from Austin and would like for anyone who is thinking of going there to stop by and pick up some goodies. My eyes have put paid to my lacing for a while and since its been two years, it may be for good. I need to know if the two people use continental bobbins or spangles. Most of my spangles bobbins I have already given away. But I have two pillows that could go and some thread(I think). And some books when I know what they are doing. I would mail them myself, but being disabled, I do not drive and getting out to go do this is very hard. Please keep me in your prayers this Tuesday as I am to have further surgery on one eye and then get some glasses that fit. If it works I may be able to go back to bobbin lace, never the less, I need the room that the pillows take up take up.and would like to get myself a little more room. Neither Holly nor Susan take "plastic" -- aka credit cards (don't know about Tracy at the Lacemaker), so it'll have to be "certifcates" from US-dwellers who can pay via an ordinary check. OTOH, if our "overseas sisters" wanted to contribute... :) Most (though not all) of the European vendors are "fixed for plastic". And *all* of them are willing to make an extra effort to accomodate the particular needs/quirks of their customers (I've been sending my credit card data in 4 separate installments to several suppliers and *none* objected to the extra effort). Once we know -- Hannah? And Amanda also, of course -- what's needed most (type of bobbins, pillows, threads), there's no reason why a vendor *outside US* couldn't collect "gift certificate pledges", for a period of time -- Noelene? The beds and the tables were likely to have been insured; if not, neighbours will pitch in. But, equipment for a hobby that most people consider weird in the first place? Several people have asked where Hannah and Amanda live. It's in the state of Missouri in the USA . Re: [lace] Re: our house burned
Hannah and Amanda I think I can safely speak for everyone on this list in saying that we are all really sorry for you and the rest of your family. As you can hear from the list already we would love to be able to help you get some lace equipment again. Some of us may have extra equipment around the house, some of us would prefer to make a gift via a supplier. For those of us who are searching our closets and stashes can you tell us what sort of pillows and bobbins etc you are used to using so that we know what would be most helpful? eg cookie, roller, block, bolster pillow and midlands or continental bobbins. What sort of thread do you use most? What sort of lace do you make (in case we have duplicate books on our shelves)? Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers Sue Babbs [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey, there's an idea. Might be easier if everyone did one company. I don't have cash at the moment - that is why I was wondering where they live. I'm sure they need household stuff, etc., too.Maybe someone lives nearby. I know that for instance I'm not the only one on this list who lives in Austin, Texas. In message <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Brenda Paternoster <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes >> Has anyone got their January "Lace " yet? > >No. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive I suspect the postal system is being a bit erratic - mine arrived on Wednesday morning! Somebody mentioned my bookmark pattern that is in this issue - thought some people might be interested to know that I originally designed it for an Arachne bookmark swap - two of the three Arachnes I was swapping with had only just started making bobbin lace, so I thought I would make a sampler of the basic torchon stitches they were likely to come across. The ones I did for them I worked up in LBH 40 tatting thread - the one that twists up a lot in tatting so a lot of tatters don't like it, but it works OK for bobbin, producing a very firm result. One of my students achieved a very nice effect using a pastel coloured variegated DMC Fil a Dentelles 80 thread. If anyone bothers to work it, I would love to hear their comments - and I'm sure that goes for others who have patterns published, too - such feedback motivates designers to continue designing, especially those who may be new to design work. Constructive criticism - ie of the problems found in working patterns - is always helpful as it means the designer is less likely to cause the same pitfalls again. -- Jane Partridge - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] walnut for turning into bobbins
hello all My 100 year old walnut tree blew down last week. The tree surgeons are cutting it up next week. Is anyone in the woodturning world interested in purchasing sections of this tree I'm certain that it would make wonderful bobbins? This really only applies to UK but is interesting for all that.
