[lace] Re: inventoryr of bobbins

2009-05-25 Thread Alice Howell
My DH doesn't concern himself with my tools. I don't say anything about his
automotive repair tools.G No need to worry about talking in my sleep.

But the point is -- An inventory of tools is needed for insurance purposes. It
can just be pictures of groups of bobbins laid out on the bed or table.
Decorated ones should be close up enough to see the decoration. Plain ones
could be laid out in larger bunches, as long as each one is visible and can be
counted. Putting all of a style in one picture would give a basic count. Put
a sign in each picture with the name of the bobbin type, the number of bobbins
in the picture and possibly even the average price and total value for that
group. That would save counting them more than once.

The pictures would be proof of the existence of claimed bobbins in case of
disaster. Have the pictures stored somewhere other than your home. Digital
pictures can go on a computer and be stored in an online facility, or put on a
disk and stored with a relative or at work. Or print out the pictures and give
to a lace friend to save for you.

Do the same thing with your pillows and other lacemaking tools. A
non-lacemaker insurance person might not believe a claim for 27 pillows and
2000 bobbins, but pictures could prove it was really more than that. Pictures
of your lace projects would be nice for your scrapbook. They would be proof
that you use your tools.

While you have the camera, take pictures of your bookcase(s) also. Your books
may be worth more than all your bobbins.

Yes, there are detailed written and computer forms of inventory with each item
listed separately with it's history. a picture, and etc. Those are great if
you have time and energy. Use the kind of inventory that works for you.

Hi All

I actually meant that the vast majority of people would not do
everything just for others, without anything for themselves, unless
they had the funds available to do it. If they were relying on the

Hi, Jeri -

I take your point about people making things and giving them away for
charity and other good causes. I have done that myself.

But I think what Sue was talking about was making things and selling them
for less than cost. That is no way to run a business, and even if we were
to do it for the joy of making things, we'd still find that earning a living
would take priority and we'd have to spend most of our time doing that.

Just out of curiosity, why am I probably among those who have benefited?

Gentle Spiders,
I am one of those who make and give away just for the love of doing.  I cannot
begin to count the afghans (knitted or crocheted) or the quilts made while
being a full time care-giver to my precious hubby for many years.  These items
have been given to nursing home patients as well as to the local CPC (Crisis
Pregnancy Center).  Currently I serve as co-ordinator for our church's Prayer
Shawl/Prayer Quilt Ministry.  I am on a fixed income, especially since my
hubby's death two years ago but often supplies are given to me by friends,
relatives and sometimes complete strangers via the local senior center where I
(volunteer) teach needlework skills and quilting.  It is a great joy to me to
be physically able to share the talents the good Lord has blessed me with and
as long as I am able I will continue to share.  I was recently gifted with
nine large boxes of fabric and 6 large trash bags of yarn just for these
purposes.  My ladies and I will be busy
for quite some time, but what a joy we each receive as we create and share
God's love.
Have a blessed day,

[lace] Are you new to lace or was it passed on?

2009-05-25 Thread Catherine Hill
I learned to make lace from my mother, but she only learned to make it three
months before I did.

We were both entranced with the idea of bobbin lace from seeing it
demonstrated.  Mom had purchased a book and bobbins, but neither one of us
really had the time to sit down and figure things out.  When she had the
opportunity to learn bobbin lace while on a travel sabbatical, she jumped at
it.  And when she proudly told me of her lessons, I invoked the family
tradition of When one of us learns something, she must teach the other.
Over the summer break - I was in college at the time - she taught me the
basics.  Then she sent me off with Cook's The Torchon Workbook and I kept
right on going.

My daughter (5) has a pillow of her own now, but we haven't worked on it
much.  I have the feeling if I worked on mine more, she would feel the need to
work on hers.  Must remember to set a good example.

Dear Margery,

The people of the world are really one big family. Some more sharing than
others. Norma told us what she does. It is a benefit to those who
receive. It could be sold at a minor profit, but it is given.

I cannot represent what happens elsewhere, but in America there is a strong
sense of need to volunteer skills and materials for everything from school
programs that have no funding - to the scouting movement that needs input
from experts - to professionals who help rebuild the hopes, the bodies,
and the future of our military - to literacy - to whatever you can imagine.
Beneficiaries, in time, give back to us because volunteers have built a
more solid foundation under them.

In the needlework field, there are teachers who waive their teaching fees,
so people without necessary funds can participate without calling
attention to themselves (a gift that goes to those who could pay, as well as
to
those who cannot justify spending). Teachers give scholarships. Teachers
donate patterns and instructions, etc. simply from the love of sharing a
special skill.

Lace bulletins in various countries (not commercial magazines) contain
information and patterns - all donated.

In April's Lace bulletin from the U.K. there is a display ad from the
editor that says:

It is only possible to produce Lace as a 64 page magazine with you, the
members, contributions. The Lace Guild does not commission articles; we
rely on you to share your stories, patterns, lace, new ideas, techniques,
visits, etc. with our members Everyone has something to contribute and share
no matter how small or large it is., etc.

And then, there is the example of Liz, who has made Arachne possible. She
could charge a fee!

You have not benefited?

Just a happy customer...all disclaimers  made,,,
My favorite bobbin comes from the company called Lacemaking Circle in
California.

http://www.lacemaking.com/LacemakingCircle.htm

They don't have every kind of bobbin, but if they have what you want, the
price is probably good.  They mark two or three styles as special each time I
look.  They have two square bobbins.  One is temporarily out of stock but is
listed to have more any time now.  You can look to see if they have what you
want.

Hello Norma, and everyone

Osma Gallinger Tod was a weaver, basket maker, student of textiles

Visit handweaving.net, search her name and there are a dozen available
articles (the several that mention 'lace' are for the lace weaves on a
handloom, not our bobbin lace). She often wrote, and advertised in Shuttle
Spindle and Dyepot.

oh now, - I just googled for the digital archives on weaving, and it looks
like the booklet you mention is available online

Search Osma's name and find in the selections no17071'

and got '1971' on the first page, which shows a Torchon pattern, before my
screen froze; adobe, large files and dialup...not a good combination :(

Search Osma's name and find in the selections no17071'
(or the title is mentioned in another document - I started to download it,
and got '1971' on the first page, which shows a Torchon pattern, before my
screen froze; adobe, large files and dialup...not a good combination :(

Well, that's Part 2 of the NOL's 1970-1971 bulletins. I haven't found yet
where in there the mention is. But check out Part 1 at
http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/periodicals/nol_7071_1.pdf !
Halfway through, on Page 16 of the September 1970 issue, the Osma Gallinger
Tod Studio has an ad selling bobbin lace equipment...

Ok, I used the view as HTML to search Part 2 and find the mention - on
Page 46 of January 1971 (next to another copy of the Osma Gallinger Tod
Studio lace equipment ad), it says:

BOBBIN LACE
Interchangeable Warp and Weft
by Osma Gallinger Tod

Another fine article on bobbin lace is being enjoyed by members of the
Weavers Guild of America in its Shuttle Spindle Dye-Pot magazine for
December 1970. In this article Osma Tod tells something of the origin
of laces, compares the various thread crafts, tells how it resembles
weaving and describes its appeal during the past and the growth of interest
in America today.

I had a look at the information mentioned by Bev (link is as follows:
http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/periodicals/nol_7071_3.pdf

In looking through it, there are articles and lists of member of National
Old Lacers Club - I assume this is a forerunner of IOLI - the logo looks
similar.

It's not a public holiday in Israel. In any case, I also check Arachne
from home. The only times I am unavailable for Arachne business are
during Jewish holidays/Shabbat, when I don't use a computer (never for
more than 48 hours), and when I'm on vacation and actually away from
home (which isn't often enough!). I'll take care of it.

Thanks to all for your help and information.  It seems that the 1970 p. 16 ad
for THE BELGIAN WAY OF MAKING BOBBIN LACE by Osma Gallinger Tod is selling
for $2.25 which should mean that my copy is older as the price (in my copy) is
listed at $1.50.  A very interesting addition to my lace book collection.  I
was particularly interested in finding a date so for now I'll make a note -
pre 1970 and I'll enjoy the reading.

[lace] Admin: Subscription problems

2009-05-25 Thread Avital
Dear spiders,

If you (or someone you know) is having trouble subscribing or
unsubscribing, write to me at spind...@gmail.com or at
arachnemodera...@yahoo.com (I check that address about once a week).
The yahoo address is at the bottom of every Arachne email. You can use
it for questions about the email archives, photos, attachments,
viruses, computer problems (within reason!), etc.

I live in Israel so my time zone is 7 hours ahead of the US east coast
and 2 hours ahead of the UK. I'm off-line during Jewish holidays and
Shabbat (late Fri. afternoon to early Sat. evening), but unless I'm
actually out of town on vacation I do follow the Arachne list and try
to sort out subscription problems behind the scenes.

Best wishes,
