A note to those who may be contemplating making a portable pillow. I made one that was quite functional, but didn't take into consideration balancing it on my lap. Since I ride the bus a bit (with no table) the box bottom was to narrow and shifted about from side to side and wanted to rest a corner between my legs. The tilt didn't work out too well for good tension. :) The next bag is going to fit across my knees. I've been thinking about some pull outs to make a broader base, put that may overdo it. Re: [lace] bobbin lace bag
First you would need some weight, or to anchor it. Things like drapery weights (essentially large washers would be of some help. They could be contained within stitched squares (at least in the corners) with plastic needlepoint mesh for the core, and fabric surround (and perhaps with very thin batt or flannel as interlayer). Then shove it into the bottom, as you would want to remove it for washing, or make a zippered closing and you can add or remove weights, as desired. I would suggest you consider one or two elastic anchors at the bottom corners, that would go around your leg/thigh. Since many women wear pants/slacks, it shouldn't be a problem, other than a crease or two (and you can make a tuck in them to alleviate some of that). Grosgrain ribbon (perhaps two layers) with D rings would make for something adjustable too, or merging the elastic with the ribbon may work best. [lace] Re: Travel Pillow
making up a travel pillow, it sits gather dust...I prefer my simple small 5 block pillow Noelene I have to say, that I loved the nuances and design detail of the Spanish pillow on YouTube. I have created this kind of thing for other uses, but the bobbin tote was even more involved (perhaps too much so, for the average sewer and bobbin lace makers would perhaps prefer to spend that kind of time, actually making lace). I am reminded of when my son was little, long ago, he had tons of Lego's, and I got sick of picking them up and stepping on them. I made a huge circle (it was between 60-72 wide), with a drawstring at the outer edge. He had to play on that mat, and when done, we could just pull the string on two sides and all was contained. I don't see why you couldn't just make a large circle of a lovely fabric and do the same thing with your bobbin lace project, adjusting the circumference to your needs. Your cover cloth should protect your work, and you would contain your bobbins as per usual, then a circle could fit fairly closely but not too taut, or a square could be velcroed and have grosgrain handles. It would be a quick and inexpensive solution, when on the run. Then you can take whatever project you have on the pillow within seconds. It isn't that different in principle, than a casserole cover/carry/tote, except you may not feel you need to contain the heat or cold. A single layer of fabric would suffice, and if you think it would get bumped or want to protect your bobbins, etc., you could run a layer of batt interlayer between two fabrics, according to your wants/needs. This is exciting! I did try a bit of a google, myself, with one of the French words for lace pillow, the only one I could think of was 'coussin' (cushion) and I did get a few interesting sites, but not what I was looking for...should have remembered un carreau ! I for one am glad to see this site is still up. It is a neat unit. Probably would stay in storage more than I would use it, the chance to use pretty fabrics appeals. For a large pillow, one square yard is not big enough. Most fabrics in the USA are about 45 inches wide, so buy 45 inches (1-1/4 yd) to make your Carry Cloth. I use these a lot. I like to use batik fabric because it's pretty on both sides so I can use either side up. When I first started bobbin lace, I crocheted one of those... I used acrylic rather than elastic (I like the sound of elastic!), so what I did was chain a bunch, work a row of single crochet, work a row of maybe 2sc, chain, 2 sc, chain, etc, then a row of single crochet and finish. Re: [lace] Re: Travel Pillow
What a good idea to put a drawtape around the edges!I sometimes put my round pillows in the centre of a tablecloth (size of table cloth depends on size of pillow ...) then just knot the opposite corners on the top, and cart the pillows around holding the knots. I do have some lovely pillow bags too, and I do think they are easier than the tablecloths, but I have too many pillows, and not enough pillow bags to take them all ... However, I am also a bit of a 'belt and braces' person where bobbins and pillows are concerned, so I always anchor my bobbins down with wide elastic, and many glass-topped pins, just in case. And for the same security reasons, and because I 'have pillow, will travle' and am always toddling off to demonstrate, I also anchor my thread to the bobbins with a slip knot, so that if the bobbins do run, they don't come adrift from the threads! RE: [lace] bobbin lace bag
The pillow is 30 cm deep by 50 cm wide. The two side blocks are each 20 cm wide, and the three removable blocks down the middle are 10 cm by 10 cm. If I was making one in imperial measurement, it would be 12 inches deep and 20 inches wide with 8 inch wide side blocks and 4 inch square removable blocks. The wide side blocks (which are glued to a base of thin MDF board) allow bobbins to be pushed to either side while working. The lace you are working on must be less than 10 cm, of course, but this is a travel or lap pillow for bookmarks and straight strips (and corners). To travel, the bobbins are secured with a tie or knitting needle pins (or crocheted bobbin holders for unspangled bobbins), which are in turned pinned to the pillow, a cover cloth pinned over the lot and the entire thing slipped into one of those reusable cloth grocery bags.
