[lace] to Glue or not to glue?

2011-10-23 Thread Sue
I have been using a worker pair of gold rush on a bangle decoration for our
tree, at the end I have tied it off, then created a long loop with the
thread to hang onto the branch, ending with a knot and then knotted it again
over the top. It looks tidy enough, but I am wondering if I ought to put a
dab of pva glue to stop it fraying. At the moment I still have a couple of
inches spare thread after the knot as I haven't yet trimmed it close to the
knot.

Any thoughts please. This is the first time I have used this particularly
thread and dont want it to fall off my tree in the future

[lace] to Glue or not to glue?

2011-10-23 Thread Jane Partridge
The threads of this type that do fray don't normally fray beyond a knot
- so if you have knotted the ends together, (and by the sounds of things
you have done that twice!) you can trim the ends reasonably short as
unless your knots come undone there is no danger of the bangle falling
off the tree. If you do have threads that fray easily it will be quick
to see - they unravel the same as the sewing across the top of a cat
litter bag - so if you knot the individual ends below the frayed bit
they won't fray further. Some of the chain metallics (eg Texere's
Stardust) don't appear to fray at all.

So, you shouldn't need the glue unless you want to stiffen the
ornaments!

[lace] Glue?

2011-10-23 Thread Alex Stillwell
Subject: [lace] to Glue or not to glue?

Just a warning about glue. If you decide to use glue please check that it will
not affect your thread by trying a blob on some of the thread and leaving it
for a couple of days. Some glues will destroy threads, deteriorate, alter the
colour of threads or change colour themselves and sometimes these effects can
take a long time. I once used glue on a box I was making as recommended by an
'expert', only to find it went bright orange and ruined the item within a
couple of years. I now distrust glues and find alternative methods for
finishing off. No modern glue has been around long enough for us to know the
long-term effects. Except for short-term projects, and my lace does not come
into this category, I prefer to to avoid them.

Why not make a tassel at the end of your threads?

Have fun with your bangles

Alex

[lace] Demo 2 cents

2011-10-23 Thread Robin D
I agree on the less toted the better, maybe that's why I tot tatting/needle
lace everywhere. I have found with bobbin lace, however, that having
something other than yardage or a hanky edge is best. In fact my group
often has a little flat pillow with a snake bookmark on it for people to try
out bobbin lace. This last July 4th weekend I demoed with a tape lace bunny
that the kids just loved - one girl came back 5 times over the course of the
day to see if it was done yet (not hardly).

I also take my own chair. I know they often provide, but I'm short in
stature and find that they usually have hard wood chairs where my feel can't
touch the ground - thus cutting of circulations to my legs. If I'm staying
more than 2 hours I haul out the fold-able captain's chair that's a perfect
height for me. If I'm not comfortable I'm not happy sitting in the sun
making lace and answering questions.

You could use fray check which is used frequently in sewing and
quilting. I often but a dab of it on knots when tatting or finishing
lace as well. It won't affect the thread colour. However, don't put
a bit blob on as it does harden.

Re: [lace] Demo 2 cents

2011-10-23 Thread The Lace Bee
One of my biggest worries with demonstrating is the security of the
equipment.  Any time I set up a beginner's try out pillow I use low cost
bobbins and not too many of them so if anything happens I'm not too upset.

Back in the 90s there were a spate of thefts from lace days - people were
coming in towards the end as shoppers and then wandering into the main halls
where the lacemakers' pillows were laid out and unattended whilst they shopped
and cut off the bobbins from the pillows.

For many years (and if I'm honest
even now) I was suspicious of any bobbin on sale where the thread was still on
the neck.

We did a quick tot up of the piece that I'm making now as to the
cost and therefore the liabilty for removing it from hte house.  Because it
has 79 pairs I have used my best bobbins as these are the thin bone and ebony
ones.  At an average of £16 a bobbin with an average £4 spangle then just the
cost of the bobbins would be £3160.  Plus the cost of the pillow and pillow
bag, and threads and pins - we think that if I'm being honest it's about
£3,500 - because I've got some bobbins with £10 beads in the centre of the
spangle (yes, I'm an idiot!!!).  But what about the Posh Bag eqipment bag I've
go with my spare threads, bobbins, pricker, scissors etc ... it just keeps
going.

My home insurance would not cover this cost.

This is one of the
reasons why, if I'm going from work to the lace group I will take my pillow
and stuff out of the car and lock it in a cupboard at work to which only I
have the key (plus in the hot weather there is no way I would leave wooden and
bone bobbins in a hot car - way to go eh!).

Yes the piece I'm working on is
exceptional and no the norm but it is important that you understand the
insurance implications of taking your lace out.

[lace] Glue

2011-10-23 Thread VivienneWalton
Hi, all the lace you see on my stall and web site have the knots glued with
fray check. I have been doing it for 28 years with no discolouration.
Though I was told years ago that USA Fray check id slightly different from the
UK one. I don't know. I do know it is fine. However. Do not use the bottle
to apply, Cut off the top, dip a bodkin in the glue and just touch the
knot. Also do not use on silk as it takes forever to dry and finally don't use
it on black as it seems to ever so slightly lighten the knot. I was at a
show today in Tonbridge and a lady said I never talk on Arachne. I said I
do. She said what name do I used, I said my name, Vivienne. Sfe sais Oh yes,
I didn't know that was you! So in future, Vivienne/Presencia

2011-10-23 Thread Laceandbits
Guttermans fabric glue is available from Hobbycraft in the UK, at the
branch near Gatwick airport at least. That's where I buy it, but for some
weird reason the staff all say they don't stock it and it's kept with the
patchwork rulers and rotary cutters, not with the other glue. Pure
serendipity
I found it browsing one day a more than a year ago. And a month or so ago
they still had it, and it was still not with glue.

I got it as it's what the Spanish ladies in Spain used to mount their fans
onto the stitcks. They were amazed I'd not heard of it. It's one that
can be applied and then used as an iron on adhesive so it doesn't soak into
the textile.

I also suggested to Sue that she could melt the ends of the thread. A
quick touch against an electric hotplate would do it.

I always recommend not taking a large pillow that puts many bobbins and many
hours of work at risk. And I recommend not taking one with a dense lace
pattern. When you are demonstrating, the idea is to have people see the paths
the threads take, and hold the interest of on-lookers. It is not to
over-whelm people who have never seen lace being made. Remember to smile.

Actually, I've had great interactions when I take my relatively large project
to demonstrations. It has more than 50 pairs and is a torchon pattern of my
own design. Torchon is a very structured, logical lace and great for
demonstrations. People look at my pillow and at first are overhwelmed, but
then I start my spiel. I point out that no matter how many are on my pillow,
I'm only using 2 pairs at a time. I show how the pinholes define the pattern,
that the hole that's farthest away from me is the next one to be worked. I
show how the pairs to interact at that pin are the ones that come down from the
left and down from the right. I do a stitch, then point out how I drop one
pair and pick up the next, according to the pinholes. Now the pattern makes
sense.

Then I start on the stitches. I show them CT (very slow) and show what that
looks like in the half-stitch trail; I then add another cross and show them a
cloth stitch area and how that's just like woven fabric; then I add another
twist and show them the fan worked with whole stitches (this is US
terminology). By this time, most are nodding their heads, smiling, and going,
Ah, I see! Most people go away intrigued with lacemaking and proud of
themselves for understanding it.

I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots.
Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be
driven there.

I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too
much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt.
That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often.

I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense!
It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart!
At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!
