There is a little confusion on the lace issue of Piecework. Mine is
the May/June 2012.

I've

It contains an interesting article on Bucks point, with a pretty

Margaretenspitze,

[lace] Re: Spanish Lace Pillow

2012-05-01 Thread Debora Lustgarten

...Me again!
I'm sure Carolina and Antje, among others, will be able to give more
detailed explanations, but in general, the bolster is used
extensively, although now we are seeing more lace-makers propping a
cookie pillow or a flat block pillow up and working their bobbins
"palms up". This "palms up" method is used throughout Europe (except
for English, French, Dutch and Nordic lace-makers) and can be seen in
Russia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Spain,
Portugal, Greece, etc. I'd say that it goes hand in hand with the use
of a cylindrical bolster-type pillow where bobbins do not lie on a
supporting surface.
The bolster itself can be leaned in the direction one needs to work,
and is used indistinctly for continuous lace, mats, scarves, fans,
figurative lace, you name it.
When dealing with large number of bobbins, the pictures show
lace-makers separating the areas of threads with separating pins and
bundling the bobbins with rubber bands. If I recall correctly, small
cloth bags were also used to store idle bobbins, to prevent them from
getting tangled.
The good thing of these Lace Day photo galleries is that it shows the
variety of ways pillows are used, and how lace-makers deal with
different types of lace using the same equipment.

Cheers,
Debora Lustgarten

I think that type of pillow is only used in Spain, though I have made one
for myself (a bit more round though) as I don't like to use the Maltese
bolster at all. Before someone on Arachne mentioned using pillows filled
with polystyrene to stop pillows rolling around, I couldn't bear mine
moving all over the placeand I hated sitting in the corner to work!

RE: [lace] Piecework

2012-05-01 Thread Angel Skubic
I have always found Piecework inspiring. I subscribe and can't seem to find
a reason to stop since every issue is full of something that I can do or get
excited about. I also go crazy for the single special issues "Traditions"
for knitting (3 or 4 issues already out) and "Traditions" for crochet which
covers tons of crocheted lace. Knitted, crocheted, bobbin and needle laces
of all kinds are always popping up in Piecework magazine, even when it is
not the Spring Lace issue. I must admit, however, I really do wait
impatiently every year for the lace issues.
Bucks Point is my favourite type of lace so very thrilled with the nice
pattern in this spring's issue.

Spanish Lace Pillow Re: [lace] lace photos - what is it?

2012-05-01 Thread La
Hi Katelyn,

I'm sure our Spanish lacemakers will join in this discussion. As
a primary user of cookie and Honiton pillows, I have used the Spanish bolster.
I used to demonstrate at a Spanish colonial/territorial living history museum
and made lace on the bolster. There were a few challenges, mostly bobbin
control, but it worked out.  I felt like a nine armed klutz that couldn't
control myself.  Eventually, with the hours of practice and peaceful setting,
it became second nature. Try it!  It's fun!

2012-05-01 Thread Carolina de la Guardia

Hello Alice and all,

Every year, (in a different city) takes place in Catalonia the Lace Day
Event "La Diada de la puntaire" that is "The lacemakers Great Day". It
is organized by the Catalonian Lace Association-ACP, and this year the
demonstration was the 29nth April in Arenys de Mar, city with a great
lace tradition.

Other activities that we had the opportunity to enjoy were:
A fashion show. An international participation with stands from Hungary,
Idrija, Slovaquia, France, and other traditional lace areas of Spain as
Camariñas, Almagro, Arboç, Arenys de Munt and Arenys de Mar. Also, an
interesting exhibition in the Mares Lace Museum.

2.300 lacemakers were participants in the Diada and up to 50 vendors.
Next year the event will take place in the city of Barcelona, probably
26nth May, 2013.

As Bev well says, these type of laces are the traditional guipure laces
we make in Spain, they have a certain familiarity with Cluny laces. They
have a plaited ground, leaves, and the outer edge ends with plaits
forming pointed edges with picots (puntillones). Other pictures that are
within this Spanish lace are: 73, 79, 100, 104 and 140.

Greetings from Barcelona. Spain

I do notice that Spanish lacemakers tend to use a completly different sort
of pillow - a sort of very large half-bolster.

Has anyone use one of these? What do you think?

I also noticed in several of the pictures the patterns had a website
address on them: http://www.patronsroka.com/index.php?cPath=81

Re: [lace] Piecework

2012-05-01 Thread Diane Williams
I especially loved the Bucks Point pattern in the magazine because it mentions
in the article that a similar design shows up in Downton lace but with a
different ground (honeycomb instead of point ground) and Downton is one of my
favorite laces.  I definitely have that on my wish list once I finish my
bookmark for the exchange.  I found the article about Margaretenspitze
wonderful even if the accompanying project was not terribly intriguing to me.
I am even a little bit tempted to pick up a crochet hook and try the Clones
crochet.  Piecework continues to inspire and I've been a subscriber for many
years.

Recently I've fallen in love with Romanian Point lace and Piecework
featured an RPL butterfly in their January 2001 issue.  It's one year that's
missing from my collection so I purchased the digital download of the whole
year from Interweave.  I loaded it on my nook and can look at the magazines no
matter where I'm at.  I'll never give up the paper issues, but having the
digital version always with me is pretty sweet.

I wish the lace days here were remotely close. Unfortunately, although we
have two lace days a year - one in Gozo and one in Malta - attendance is
nothing like the ones in Spain.
