[lace] Jabots
Hello Everyone! I noticed yesterday that our Town Mayor's jabot is: a) getting tatty and, b)machine made. Subsequent enquiries have resulted in the knowledge that our town does not possess a handmade jabot so..I am thinking of making one!!! The ones they have are very frilly, and they like them like that, so it would mean a lot of lace, therefore I think it would be best in fine Torchon, so that I can finish it in my lifetime! Has anyone got any patterns/ideas to help me? Liz - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Lace Lady Designs
HI! I have recently purchased a used copy of a LaceLady Design. It is a very cute torchon heart that I would like to adapt for wire and use in my wire class. I would never do this without asking for permission, but I can not seem to locate her. I have tried the number on the pamphlet and it is no longer in service. This certainly could mean she has moved, but could also mean she is no longer with us. The name given is Cristina Banyard, and an address in Nebraska. I tried my IOLI and Lace Museum rosters with no luck. Does anyone know of her whereabouts? Thanks, Kim - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. Re: [lace] Jabots
There are many styles of jabots. Some take more lace than others. Do some browsing through lace books you have access to and you may find several ideas. Do some browsing on the internet also. You don't list your location with your signature. I'm guessing UK since your mayors often wear lace jabots. Some years back, the ladies of The Border Lacemakers made new jabots for the town council,I think... the booklet they published had eight patterns in it. The booklet was titled Millennium Jabot Patterns. They were Torchon edgings about 2.5 to 3 inches wide with corner-finished ends. However, the booklet does not have any pictures on how the finished jabots were made or how long the edgings were. Are there any Border Lacemakers on the List that can tell us how they were made or any details? One popular style has an edging stitched in zigzag fashion up a narrow, triangular fabric base. This takes roughly a yard of lace if the bottom width is about 5 inches and the finished length about 10 inches long if the edging is about 3 inches wide. Draw out the desired finished size and the sewing lines for the lace. Measure it, and add a bit more for shrinkage of the lace. If you want ruffled lace, I suggest using a curved pattern for the lace. It can be a fun project. Re: [lace] Lace Lady Designs
Hi Kim, Search on Google for Christina Banyard. It says that she died in Dec 2010 in New Jersey, but had been a long-time resident of Lincoln Nebraska. Is the address you have in Lincoln? [lace] lace links on Pinterest for LaceNews
As if I didn't have enough to do, sitting here with my arm in a sling from the recent redo of my rotator cuff surgery, I actually have been working with a professional web designer to finally get the LaceNews website up and running. He suggested I take a serious look at Pinterest, which started in 2010, and is now the third largest social network behind Facebook and Twitter. I'm not one to start something just because it is popular, but in looking at Pinterest, it seems to be ideal as a 'link' page. Most websites have a section called 'links', where numerous pointers to sites of interest can be listed. These suffer from the usual problems of persistence as sites disappear, and they often get forgotten in maintenance activities. I've written some detailed notes on this at http://lacenews.net/lacenews-on-pinterest/, and established a LaceNews Pinterest site at http://pinterest.com/LaceNews/boards/. The basic idea is you go to a website, pick a photo that interests you, 'pin' it to a Pinterest 'board', and now you have a picture, a pointer to the website, and you can write a short description. Click on the photo twice and it takes you to the website. You can even load a photo from you own computer (perhaps even something like an advertisement designed by the people owning the site you want to pin) and link to an external website if that site doesn't have a good enough photo. Everyone can see the Pinterest pins, and subscribers to the service (it's free) can also add comments and follow various boards. It's not perfect, for example you can only go one layer deep in boards (making this more flexible is on a to-do list at Pinterest). But I have to admit it's all looking very good, and surprisingly simple to manage. I now have 29 boards for various lace topics, and over the past three days have done very close to 300 pins. Take a look, feedback welcome. Things will jump around a bit as I decide on the optimum organization of boards, and every day I'm adding many more pins. Laurie http://lacenews.net (for example, I note a recent question on the Kniplebrevet publication on Arachne. I have a board called 'Lace Periodicals' with a direct link to Knipelbrevet, plus every other lace periodical I can think of.) - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace-chat] A RETIREE'S LAST TRIP TO WAL-MART
Yesterday I was at my local Wal-Mart buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had an elephant? So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stopped to pee on a Fire Hydrant and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was Laughing so hard. Wal-Mart won't let me shop there anymore. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the World to think of crazy things to say.
