Re: [lace] Square lace bobbins
Hi Arachnids, For lace with numerous sewings I like to use Duchesse or Bruges bobbins depending on the weight of the thread. For very fine thread I will use Honiton bobbins especially if a large number of bobbins are needed as they are slim and one can accommodate many bobbins on the pillow. For continues laces I use either the Midlands (spangled) bobbins or a set of the above (according to thread weight) whichever is free at the time. I like to use the continental bobbins as I can flick them rather than having to lift them as is necessitated by the spangles. The former allows me to work a little quicker. Re: [lace] Music to Make Lace By
Cool! I've never heard this before, but I always liked Baroque (especially Bach) for studying. I always wished the UCLA Biomed library would pipe in music--as soon as I entered the stacks my thoughts turned to Bach. Something about the smell of the old volumes triggered that association. Thanks for the info! For lacemaking, however, I learn toward New Age stuff--George Winston, Lanz & Spear, Kitaro, Nakai, that sort of stuff. Tranquil & serene. Native American flute museic is also really good. For me, making lace is meditative, unlike studying. Robin P. Yes, I've been wondering about the list lately as there just didn't seem to be many posts. I chalked it up to the last of the summer holidays. But then tonight within the span of an hour I rec'd a whole slew of e-mails from the lace list. Dona in Havre de Grace, MD where sadly the lacemaking has been non-existent this summer. Re: [lace] Music to Make Lace By
i do use music for a lot of different areas, but i, too, need not to be distracted. i found several MP3 albums on Amazon for "dedicated readers" which only have music and no lyrics. it is classical. my favorite provider just came out with album #10 which is very good. a bit uplifting - not charging - and so you keep up a good pace and don't mellow out too much. each of the albums i have purchased has been a bit different enough that getting a new album (about 99 cents US for 24-25 songs/tracks) can allow me to pick the pace it will set to suit my task. cleaning the bathroom requires a bit of a celtic stomp the foot type. you can test them out by listening to the samples. you don't get much but it gives you an idea about the spirit of the music. i have all 10 and have found the ones i like best for what i am doing. i think they are range from an hour to at least two hours. i download them to my computer, cell phone and my tablet. just a thought and something to give you pleasure. i play the samples on my computer while i do something else on the computer and it is a distraction but i find my shoulders do stay low while i am doing the tense seek and find missions. Re: [lace] Music to Make Lace By
I have read this thread with interest as for many years, teachers and trainers have been encouraging their students to play Baroque music low in the background when studying for exams. Much research s done in the 90s on accelerated learning and it was found that the beat of Baroque music was similar to that of the of heart beat during light exercise. When students revised or did activities with this in the background they retained more information than without. It apparently, among other things, evens our breathing and thus oxygen intake, making us more alert, is often rhythmical meaning that you read or do the exercise a little quicker because you pick up the 'flow' and rhythm of the task and ... I was surprised by this one, even people who don't like 'classical' music quite like a few pieces of Baroque. In order to maximise its use, it is advised to have a variety of pieces to play (I remember the trainer who had been told music aided learning and played a Celtic Harp version of my heart will go on for EVERY exercise for two days. By the middle of the second day one of the delegates accidentally trod on the CD ... He got a round of drinks bought for him that night ... If he hadn't done that by the end of the week we would have been homicidal). I personally like to use Purcell as not many people are familiar with him but Mozart and Vivaldi work just as well and Handle to some extent. I would suppose that non classical music would work as well if the beat was similar. There were a number of meditative CDs around in the 80s based on traditional music such as Clannad and at some point I might do some tests in my training sessions to see the results. Other research has shown that background noise can be disturbing as it is unpredictable so something which blocks out the background noise but is rhythmic helps ... Think of the child who will sleep with the radio on but won't when its quite ... Same principal. I've always felt that this is why lacemakers work so well when they meet in a group. The rhythmic sound of the bobbins is very often at the same rate as your heart and so we work faster and better in a group. The Aussie, who has bad tinnitus, finds the doing of my lacemaking soothing as the bobbins click and clack. In fact, recent unscientific tests have shown that if he shoots things on the play station whilst I make lace next to him, his score improves. [lace] Fan in Flanders lace
Hi Jeanette, I think no one has answered because no one has seen a Flanders fan pattern. I looked through my books. The traditional patterns were all straight edgings. The modern patterns showed a few narrow curved patterns and a few oval motifs. However, nothing was close to the type of pattern needed for a fan. This may shock a few purists, but I suggest looking at Bucks Point fan patterns. If you find one you like, work it in Flanders style stitches and techniques instead of Bucks. The other option is to learn Flanders well enough to design patterns, then design your own fan. Re: [lace] Old lace magazines
Never ever through anything out. Firstly give or sell them to other lacemakers in your area. Many lace guilds or groups have a mechanism to recycling old magazines / books etc to newer members be it a sign at a lace day saying 'free to a good home' or selling them for a small cost and using the money for library books. Secondly many OP shops will accept them and sell them on to interested parties. my knitting group always goes there for extra knitting needles and old knitting patterns. Thirdly donate them to a local school or church group for their annual fair, most have a secondhand or preloved table with books and other bits and pieces. I once bought a huge selection of tatting patterns at a charity fair (these were taken from magazines and on the surface did not look good but the patterns were lovely). Forthly offer to send out a list of what you have (ie we contact you privately) and if we want them then we can pay you the postage for your magazines. [lace] Silver bobbins
Dear David and all, I have been in contact with Rhona, Frank Newborn's daughter. She and her mother have been delighted to hear how his work is valued by lacemakers and tatters. But she told me that she never made bobbins. Her contribution was to advise her father about lace and to test his bobbins. So the RKN in the silver mark on my silver bobbins does not refer to her, and I am no nearer knowing who made them. But it was very nice to receive her delightful letter. [lace] Square lace bobbins
I was noticing that I don't see square lace bobbins on ebay so I decided to paint some and list them on ebay. I have a couple there now. One will be ending real soon. I am planning on continuing to paint more and selli g them. Some of you might have some of my Celtic ones that i painted years ago. I like the square bobbins myself when I make Milanese Lace since there are a lot of sewings. What about the rest of you out there? What type of bobbins do you use and why? Sent from Yahoo!
