finished for the family!

[lace] Lace and Maths

2013-07-08 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
This discussion has been very interesting, however for those of us who
came to lace in the middle '70s there were not many 'textbooks' around,
certainly in English.
My introduction to lace was a Council evening class with Tordis Berndt
as our tutor -20+ of us in September 1976.. The only literature/books
available were the series from the Lace Guild, Magaret Maidment from
approx. 1910. and a few other booklets. Tordis also had her university
notes , 2 Swedish booklets which the number of bobbins required ,
photos etc. but no prickings.
I think the need to work these out onto graph paper , whether one was
maths inclined or not did not come into it, it had to be done. But, one
learnt how important it was to be able to follow the thread pairs
through the design. This then leads one to the use of colours for
different stitches before the international colour code came into being.
Certainly I have found those 2 early years as having laid a good
foundation for the years ahead. It has also probably helped when one
passed on to designing, not just in geometric but in the 'free' laces
so many of us now do.

What a terrible loss. Sheila and Russell came to the first Lace Day that
Sawbridgeworth Lacemakers held in 1978 and for many years after that.
Nick had just started making bobbins, which I still have. They have
had a very special place in our hearts as they were one of the first
lace suppliers. Also maybe having the same name made us feel very
close. Best wishes to Russell, Julie and Nick from all the Brown family.

*Julie Andrews Turning 79 - this is hysterical! *

*To commemorate her birthday, actress/vocalist, Julie Andrews
made a special appearance at Manhattan 's Radio City Music
Hall for the benefit of the AARP. One of the musical numbers
she performed was 'My Favorite Things' from the legendary movie
'Sound Of Music'. Here are the lyrics she used: *

*(Sing It!) - If you sing it, its especially hysterical!!! *

*Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.

/Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things. /

When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.

/Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things. /

Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',
And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache, When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.

[lace] Hurricane

2012-11-01 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
Watching the news on the BBC makes one realise how dependent we have
become on gas, electric/water supplies etc.
In 1987 southern England had a very strong storm -hurricane. Living
north of the Thames the damage was nowhere as bad as in the south(near
Stansted Airport), in fact we all slept through it. But going to see a
lace exhibition in Surrey, south of the Thames, we meet the damage of
trees brought down in the woods/forests. They would not allow us into
the exhibition because of worry of trees falling down and so we went to
Royal Tunbridge Wells. There the trees in the historic Pantiles had
come down, in removing them the tractors had done more damage to the old
pavement than the falling trees!
We do have the Thames Barrier, but would it withstand a storm such as
that that hit the Eastern seaboard (remember the 1953 floods along the
east coast) and would the walls along the banks be high.enough on the
Thames? Certainly our Underground would be badly hit.
Our thoughts go out to you and if there is any way in which we can help
our lacemaker friends you only have to ask

If the skirt is one off it could be hand with 'rolled tallies'.
Otherwise, if garment is made in quantity it would be machine.
Cluny Lace Co. do a material which has rolled tallies in the design but
is very expensive to make, as the machine has to be stopped to make the
tallies and then restarted.

2011-07-17 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
Some of my bobbins are dated '84 and '86, others have no dates. I have
the pair which were on ebay.

By the way I have a great-grandmother bobbin made by Barry Adams for my
mother, the babe is in blue. Now I'm become one I feel I can use it.
Barry only worked in ivory, salvaged initially, from pianos before they
went on the bonfire and from old tusks he managed to buy. He had his
lathes set up in a barn, open to the English weather and would come to
the Four Star Lace weekends and demonstrate for us on the Saturaday
evening when we relaxed.
Barry recommended rubbing the bobbins with lavender oil if they weren't
being used regualrly to preserve the ivory.

I first met David at a Craft Fair held in Sawbridgeworth in the early
1980s and he then came to one of Sawbridgeworth Lacemakers Lace Day.
He lived in Westcliff-on-Sea , Essex, which is on the Thames estuary.

[lace] bobbin making

2011-06-23 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
Many years ago, when my youngest daughter wanted to learn to make lace,
I used to sit and whittle 4mm wooden canes to make her bobbins. I even
used to carve patterns along the body using a Stanley Knife (a make of
craft knife in the UK).
One of the woodwork teachers taught me how to use a lathe, but it
wouldn't take this thin wood. In the end I made over 200 hundred in
the lunch hour in the school I worked in. She is now 40+ with 2
daughters who also laced.
Two years ago she came with us to the Lace Guild stand at the Knitting
and Stitches Show in London. She was amazed at how quickly it came
back, when she helped people try the snake, altho' she hadn't laced for
years. Shows that a skill like ours maybe forgotten but never lost.

The cost of the art can sneak up on you. I know some people have one pillow
and one set of bobbins, and are happy to keep to that. I tend to get over
enthusiastic when I'm enjoying myself.

I think back to Arachne 98 when my class list specified bringing 100 pair of
bobbins. I gasped, and started counting bobbins. I found I could just make
the requirement if I finished two projects, dumped one or two, and spangled all
bobbins not yet in action. Then I got to thinking that the average value of
those bobbins was about $5 each. That meant that I was packing $1000 worth of
bobbins in my bag.

I haven't counted my bobbins since then...and have acquired many, many more of
them. (I would guess over a thousand). An inventory would be good for
insurance purposes, but it would also shock my mind on how much I've spent on
them. (Plus pillows and all that other stuff.)

How important is it to have a current inventory of all lacemaking equipment?
Is it really worth the time and effort?

Alice in Oregon ... looking forward to no rain next week.

Insurance of bobbins.

I put mine under contents which covers them individually up to a
certain amount. Some people put them in as tools of the trade'.
Since I have many Barry Adams ivory(old piano keys) bobbins if I priced
them out I'd need a mortage to cover the yearly premium. It's not only
bobbins -pillows, books, threads . The list is endless of the extras
we collect. A nightmare when we came to downsize yet again to a much
smaller house. My solution was to give most of my antique laces to The
Manor House Museum in Bury St. Edmunds together with books on history
and identification. This way they have become available to other
lacemakers and not just me.

[lace] British Lace Guild AGM

2011-04-14 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
This year we met at The National Trust Headquarters in Swindon. It was
an excellent venue since there were other activities around, especially
The Steam Museum(Isambard Kingdom Brunel).
Over 150 membersattended for the entire weekend, with day members and
visitors as well. The latter included members of the public who were
attracted by our demonstraters and mounted exhibitions from these
groups.:- Salisbury and Spire and Sarum, Wyvern and Chipping Sodbury
Lacemakers. Together with Bristol Leisure and Great Western Embroiderers.

Besides the suppliers attending, we had Lace Guild sales of patterns,
calendars, beginner booklets on a number of varying lace techniques e.g
milanese, needlepoint, torchon etc.. A 50/50 sale with many tempting
bargains, surplus books from the Guild Library. The Guild also
displayed some treasures from our Lace Archives.

On the Saturaday afternoon the business meeeting was held with a lively
discussion on the problems of recruiting new members. This is made more
difficult in the current financial situation with Further Education
classes being either cut or made too expensive across the country. It
was agreed that it was important for us:-
   1. to get out and about to demonstrate lace on every possible
occasion, with a beginner's pillow availabe for people to 'have a go'!
2. to approach schools where we could teach lace, possibly as an
after school activity/club.

I also delight in attending the AGM for a number of reasons. Yes,
because one should be involved in the running of the Guild even in this
small way, but for the joy of meeting friends who live many miles away
(in UK terms) and the exchange of ideas on designing, making, mounting
etc. of lace. It is a melting pot from which new ideas are created and
our craft can move onwards.

There is another reason, that rarely gets mentioned, and that is the

[lace] Arachne get-togethers

2011-04-14 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
With OIDFA being in Caen next year, it would be useful if we knew how
many members are likely to attend. We could then look at the possibility
of organising some sort of informal get-together.
In the past we have had these at Lace Guild AGMs with a dozen or more.
This year we were all busy meeting each other over the two days rather
than trying to arrange a definite time.
I also have 7 pillows, kept in their ,stored in a large cupboard under
the eves of my little house. Plus bobbin cases, bobbin (3 drawer)
chest,4 pillow stands etc. etc. How many bobbins, I try not to about
that, just keep rotating them, and then there are all the threads,
tools. Where do we find the room to eat, sleep and relax?

[lace] cleaning lace.

2011-04-11 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
I recently had to clean a long runner which I have on my chest of
drawers/dressing table. Many years ago someone said put the lace into a
bag with unperfumed talc and give it a good shake. Then shake all the
talc out. It worked and the runner is like new.

Otherwise I have pinned out the lace onto a thin sheet of polystyrene,
gently made it wet with a shower, then used baby liquid soap solution
on the lace, showered it very well- always with tepid water- and left
it to dry. The polystyrene sheet was ¼ -½" thick and I used milanese
pins. The lace would dry as if it had been starched and never in
strong sunlight.

How lovely to see the class, mainly of a certain age! No cover cloths,
how do they manage when you have to work over finished areas or do they
use sheets of fine cloth as needed, so that the threads will not catch
in the pins. Nice to see the children there ,pre-school age, I expect
as they go at 7 instead of 5 here in England.
But it was 'aux fuseaux' not 'aiguilles' i.e not needle lace.
It would be nice if they would show the exhibition that was being prepared.

[lace] Thanks to Jenny

2010-10-02 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
Well I didn't think that my innocent posting would result in such an
avalanche of names.
Alas, although I did make some bobbins for my youngest daughter from 3mm
dowling using a Stanley knive, I wouldn't call myself a bobbin maker.
Neither was Alan, his forte was to write on the social history of
lacemakers, both in England and Ireland in the late C19th. My
contribution has to do a little designing and write a few teaching booklets.

May, I thank Jenny for compiling the list and I promise, one day to scan
in some of the bobbins I have as examples. So, it's back to the pillow
and get ready for our OIDFA get-together day tomorrow. Guess what's on

[lace] Bobbin makers

2010-09-27 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
Reading the letters on making bobbins, brought to mind the people I have
bought bobbins from since I started in 1976. Sadly some have retired
or died, but we are fortunate in that others have taken their place.
David Springett, who came to the first Lace Day I organised in
1979/80 Also there were Chrisken, Nick from SMP Lace and Ken Travers.
Barry Adams who worked in ivory from old piano keys and enticed me with
Alan and Sheila bobbins. These were the first of many in building the
family trees! David Naylor who also used ivory and mammoth and died
suddenly at 48.
Bryn Phillips who made Xmas bobbins with Father Christmases, some of
which were different. If you had one he then gave you a bone bobbin as a
pressie. He also made special bobbins for the Armada defeat in 1588.
Today, we have Acorn bobbins (bone), Hudson, Stuart Johnson et alia.
The list of UK bobbin makers is endless and my apologies for not
including them all, but they still all tempt us keep that heritage
alive and after all you can always do with another bobbin or two!!!

Many years ago at a lesson with Veronica Sorenson the subject of
tallies came up. She then proceeded to show us 8 different ways, most
of which I have forgotten- senior moments!
The weekend course was on Schneerberger lace and was most enjoyable.
One word of warning, if you try and make the pillow she describes in of
one of her books where she has a chapter on Schneeberger, use 5mm or
a little thicker 3-plywood, any less and it bends into a crescent shape
as you fill it and you end up rolling on the floor in fits of
laughter. All the while trying to listen to her, on the phone, telling
you what to do!

With happy memories of The 4-Star weekends, Sheila in Sawbridgeworth.

[lace] Coming to Lace

2009-05-23 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
I found lace in 1976 when we moved up into Sawbo' from London. Decided
the way to get to meet people would be an evening class. I had done
knitting, crochet and embroidery, but this was something new and better
than taking an armchair down to an upholstery class on a wheelbarrow!.
The rest offered for the gentle sex were-typing, shorthand, cooking, oh!
and dressmaking.
That first class with Tordis Berndt opened up a new world - friends all
over the world let alone here in Britain and what a support group they
have proved to be when I needed them. It also led to Alan's books on
the lives of lacemakers since we both became fascinated by their stories.
Both of my grand-daughters and one daughter also made lace, but for the
moment it is all on the back burner.
What other joys come with lacemaking? The wonderful bobbins that
there are to collect and use but I must repeat above all it is the
friendship of the lace world that is so marvellous.
I agree with Jane about getting out to demonstrate. It is great fun and
hopefully each time we do it, someone may to lace.Sawbo' lacemakers are
out again this weekend with our pillows and hope it keps warm and dry.

[lace] Teaching..eml

2009-04-08 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
I used to try and encourage students to work out a pricking from a lace
photograph, simple torchon to start with and then progress further when
they had acquired more experience and design something themselves.
When I started lace classes in 1976, Tordis Berndt had Maidment and
the two Swedish books for us to use. The latter had photos, thread
sizes and bobbin numbers, *but* no prickings! Having to make your own
pricking from the photos, I feel made you learn more about how threads
moved than just working a piece with full instructions.
When the Book of Stitches arrived then the possiblities of different
fillings etc. opened up new avenues. Sometimes, ideas for a change will
occur when working a pattern, particularly in free lace designs i.e. to
change a stitch, add colour etc. The confidence to do this should come
with experience and a desire to spread one's wings and a willingness to
break all the 'do-nots' that were there at the time of the lace revival
in the '70s. Without this The Westhope Group, the 98 group, the use of copper
wire,
coloured threads in traditionally white only patterns , etc.could not
have come about.
Personally I prefer to use graph paper for geometrical laces as I can
envisage the movement of the threads better. Not being able to draw I
will trace a shape I like, mix and match with other shapes and then
think about the stitches which will give me the effect I'm looking for.
As others have said we work and teach as individuals and the reward is
when a student achieves the goals they have set themselves.

An article in today's New York Times discusses a recently found portrait
thought to be William Shakespeare. He is wearing a lace collar. The portrait is
thought to date from 1610 (confirmed by x-ray of the wood panel) which was
six years before Shakespeare died in 1616. One argument presented for the
position that it is not Shakespeare is that the lace is too aristocratic and nice,
although an accompanying video has a scholar type claiming that Shakespeare
was quite successful by the end of his life and would have been able to
afford sartorial finery.

2009-02-08 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
I hope that none of our friends 'down under' have been caught in the
current bush fires raging in Victoria and S.Australia. Maybe one of
them might be able to tell us about the situation.
Here in Sawbridgeworth we, at the moment, have missed the worse of the
snow, as we do the flooding when it rains. We count ourselves very
lucky that slight differences in height have such effect.

As Cath Barley says a good excuse to make lace.
Sheila, with the sun trying to shine.

[lace] What's on my pillow?

2008-12-24 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
Seasons Greetings to all wherever you are.
I have just finished a Jenny Hester wall hanging, I bought this on
6th Dec. so it's been goodbye to dusting etc to get it finished in time
as a present.
Now it's back to my grand-daughter's garter for her wedding in January
-little horseshoes.
When that's done I'll restart a project on Czech Point Ground.

Dear Spiders , Here is one recipe for the Clanger from The Independent

[lace] Pin holes etc.

2008-11-03 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
I'm working on old Czech/Bohemian patterns at the moment, having to work
out the prickings first!. In some cases in order to be quicker they are
not doing picots, but putting extra twists on the pair coming out of the
headside instead. As others have commented they look alright, which when
all is said and done to the non-lacemaker, that is what matters.

[lace] Thank yous.

2008-10-30 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
Dear Spiders, First of all, sorry about the error in trying to send
the spider over. I hope it will reach you by other routes i.e. Malvary
and Margot.

On behalf of the family, which includes 3 other lacemakers and 1
embroiderer may I thank everyone for their kind thoughts on Alan's
death. We had just celebrated our 50th anniversary when the cancers
suddenly galloped.
I shall miss his support in all the lace projects I've always worked on
and the sub-editing and layout of the patterns and books I have done.
Certainly the work he did on the social history of lacemakers in the mid
C19th helped him after he retired from journalism and missed the urgency
and pressure of deadlines to be met after 40+ years spent on Fleet
Street and then as the press officer/ journal editor of one of our
larger trade unions.
At the moment I am busy making a garter for youngest grand-daughter who
is getting married in Jan. so that is something for us all to look
forward to.
I hope that if any of you ever come to Britain that we could meet , and
there is always OIDFA 2012 in Normandy!

Thanks again.

[lace] OIDFA

2008-07-09 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
Just back from the w/e and shall start the tale from the beginning of
Frankie Anderson's and my visit.
A 4am wakeup call to get to Stansted(London) for 5am- 2 hours before the
flight and so had time for a breakfast. At 9am we landed at Amsterdam
and after what seemed miles we arrived at the railway end of Schipol.
The train left at approx 10am and the journey took 2½ hours, so
sandwiches for lunch with water as no buffet car.
The countryside was as expected very flat, but interesting to see the
different crops being grown and the drainage dykes.
The hotel was fine and we found that it was very full with other
lacemakers many of whom we knew.
The walk down to the Oosterport took between 10-15 mins. which was long
enough for us to get soaked in a downpour as we returned from registration.
The Congress was held in a lovely building which fulfilled all the
expections. Light, airy, places to sit and natter over coffee etc
either in the large entrance hall, restaurant or out in a courtyard.
The lower floor had suppliers, OIDFA, Dutch and Japanese stands with a
Withof special display.
On the upper floor were more suppliers, the national displays, the bag
competition and lace exhibits from Dutch designers were on the
walls, suspended from the ceiling etc.In all the display rooms the
lighting was excellent and the 'sexy bra and panties' were fabulous.
Alas I haven't got the figure to volunteer to model them!
I went on the bus tour of the town. It is a very open city, many
delightful new estates having been built outside the ring road with
plenty of space for gardens, ponds, lakes and so on. A large new
hospital, university having 40,00 students! So on and so forth.
Constantly one was bumping into old friends or making new ones. It is
a wonder any of us had voices left by Sunday afternoon.
The lecture hall was large and there was no problem seeing the screen.
This was also the venue for the Congress opening, assembly, a concert
on the Saturday evening by a local choir in folk costume and the closing
ceremony. At this the Japanese members showed slides of places,
costumes etc in their introduction for the 2010 Congress to be held in
Kobi and the OIDFA flag was placed in their safe keeping until then.
It is impossible to describe the atmosphere, surfice to say that it was
a wonderful occasion. Alas I will not make Japan, but in 2012 the
Congress will be Caen, Normandyjust a hop across the water and we
won't have to get up so early.
The journey back again meant long waits at the airport. However we
were luckier than those on earlier trains as there was failure of
electric power which caused some holdups for those travelling into Brussels.

Now to start saving for 2012.

N.Holland

[lace] variegated thread

2008-05-16 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
These work well when doing Schneeberger lace. The variegated threads are
wound evenly onto the bobbins, plain thread being used for the weavers.
Since this lace is a type of tape, the light and dark portions of the
thread will appear at the inner or outer curves of the designs.
Lia Baumeister-Jonker's books are the best known for this lace.
Veronica Sorenson also had a chapter in one of hers.

If you don't like doing tallies stir clear!

[lace] Musee des Beaux Arts, Calais

2008-04-22 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
Over the years DH and I have visited the museum a number of times and
have seen it change from just a few pieces of lace in showcasesand small
lace machines(made in Nottingham) to 3 years ago and beautiful display
of lace and a very large machine. The latter was making lace at least 4
m. wide (didn't have a tape measure, but it was v.wide).
The lace display was of lace starting in the C17th through into modern
'times'. It included use on underwear, swimming costumes etc. The
displays from the late C19th into the C20th were amazing with high
fashion houses well represented. If anyone is interested I could try
and email photos over.
The museum also houses a large collection of Rodin sculptures and
visiting painters exhibitions.
We went into the shop Nicky mentioned, they have some interesting
postcards of the old factories.Further on past the Town Hall, quite
a walk from the museum, we found a large street market with a very large
range of lace curtaining.
This reminded me of my visit to Paris in 1952. I stayed with family in
Fonteney-sous-Bois and one day we went to Galarie La Fayette to buy net
curtaining. Mimi only wanted plain material so that we could draw
thread a design. But the range of patterned, synthetic, materials was
amazing - even to highly patterned gros point. Coming from London where
there was none of this except grotty plain nylon I was thunderstruck

[lace] Before BL

2008-04-21 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
My apologies to one and all. The unusual sight of sun and flowere on
our wild strawberry plant made me forget to say where we lived.
It's sunny Sawbridgeworth. About 30 miles each way to London and
Cambridge. 10 miles from Stansted(London) airport but unfortunately
under the flight paths.

[lace] Before Lace

2008-04-21 Thread Alan & Sheila Brown
Like most people life revolved around the family, getting back to work,
knitting, crochet and embroidery. Remaking gardens on moving into a
different house(twice before lace, now up to five!); helping DH build
wardrobes etc. indooors Outside we laid patios, built decorative walls
- to keep the cattle out who wandered down from Epping Forest and loved
our flowers. This latter problem may seem strange when you realise
that we lived in a London suburb. It has been allowed from time
immemorial for farmers in the area to graze their cattle in the
forest. Imagine what happens when they stray onto the roads!
Then in 1976 we moved to Hertfordshire, another house and garden, only
this time it was an early C17th one. A joy but a lot of work in
looking after it especially as, here in England, houses pre- 1700 are
all 'listed', so that they are maintained and not 'modernised' too much.
It was suggested that to get to know people I should go to Adult
Education Classes in the evening. Fine! However I refused (a) to
trundle a small sofa on a wheelbarrow to the venue for upholstery
classes(DH had the car for work);(b) the usual classes for 'women' ie
typing, dressmaking etc did not appeal, but lacemaking did.
Thirty plus years later, a fellow novice and I still make lace
together. Our tutor was Tordis Berndt, our textbook Maidment and 2
Swedish books of photos and the number of bobbins/thread needed. But
NO patterns! And so we had to work them out on graph paper which gave
me a grounding in how the threads moved; a great help when going onto
Bucks.
In 1980 I started teaching Adult classes as well as in schools, and
finally to writing teaching manuals for these. And then to the pleasure
of designing Point Ground.
In between , Alan(DH) and I sold craft books and organised Lacemaking
Weekends. Amazing what a house move can bring forth!
Our pockets are several thousand pounds lighter, but the joy of holding
lovely bobbins and trying to make lace worthy of them
makes it all worthwhile. The new friends that one makes in person and
over the net adds an extra plus to life.
Lurking certainly brings out the memories and Alan and I bless the day
we decided to come north otherwise we would never have found lace and
all its pleasures.
