Re: [lace] Advice on Lace Travel

2007-08-25 Thread Ann Blunden
When I was in Venice in 2005, I went to the Island of Burano and visited the
Lace Museum there. We were very fortunate to see 3 ladies of vastly
different ages making Needle lace in the last room. A lot of the lace that
is on sale at the different places was machine made. That is not to say
that hand made lace cannot be purchased there. I was on limited time so
possibly did not see any. I also didn't see any coloured lace, so I would
like to know where about coloured lace can be seen and purchased as we are
going back there later this year. (November).

I hope to leave next Friday for a trip that will take me to Venice,
Dubrovnik, Kotor (Montenegro), Saradne (Albania), Crete (Aghios
Nikolaos), Kusadasi (Turkey), Mykonos, and Athens.

The island of Pag has a major needlelace school. Pag lace looks rather
like Punto in Aria or Reticella--ornate geometric array of bars covered
in buttonhole stitches, all done in sewing-thread (okay, a bit thicker,
but not much). It's beautiful lace and perhaps they sell it on the
mainland. I'm not sure which part of the former Yugoslavia inherited
Pag, but I think it was Bosnia/Herzegovina.

The island of Burano is part of the Venice-area islands and is famous
for its needlelace, too. What I've seen was heavier than the Pag lace,
but it was more modern -- figural and colored rather than geometric and
white. Really nice, too.

Don't forget the lace makers of Portugal, there are two fishing villages
(well

small towns actually) Peniche and Vila de Conde, where lace is made and is
still taught. Peniche has an annual festival for the lace (in July) when
every lace maker there, sits in the main square making lace, there is also
a

competion for the best contempory piece of lace and also for a traditional
piece.
So perhaps two thousand lace makers in Portugal.

I, too, really like honeycomb. It's my favourite part of point ground
designs. I'm also very fond of Brabant ground, which is sort of the
torchon equivalent of honeycomb.

But I'm also very fond of half stitch. I love the way it looks as you go
from wide to narrow, or work around a curve.

So I guess that's three favourite stitches.

Did you go to the Lace Museum last time?
It is in an old church. The day we went they were also running
classes in one of the show rooms/class room.

I can find the details if you want. We caught a taxi from the town square
and he took us straight there, then when we had finished, the lady
working in the attached lace shop rang for a taxi to take us back to the
square
(it just happened to be the same driver!!). At the town square we met up

I'm not denigrating either the thought that goes into, or the value of

Dear Lacemakers,
Our Webmaster, Avital, has informed me that this message may never have
been
received by many members on the list. So, this is a Resend of a message
mailed to Arachne originally on April 26th. Must do - because I have no
idea which
Australian sent the questions! Jeri
-
April 26, 2005

Dear Lacemakers,
This morning, I received the following questions from Australia:
"Jeri, Is all white tissue paper acid free?
"If not, how can you tell the difference?"
The answer to the first question is no. People who have reused dress shop
paper have learned this - the hard way -- with damaged garments lovingly
packed
away in them. It can be devastating if an heirloom christening gown,
wedding
garments, etc.

The answer to the second question: The pH pen has been recommended
repeatedly on Arachne. It is the quickest way I know to test even the
prettiest papers
and gift or storage boxes. A small dot of the ink from this pen will be
blue
when first applied to a paper product, and will stay blue if acid-free.
If
it contains any acid, the color will change to green. If a lot of acid,
it
will change to yellow. Print the description on the site given yesterday,
so you
can show the suppliers in your country what you want. Here it is - again.

One archival supplier is Light Impressions of Rochester, NY, USA. I have
frequently recommended their pH Testing Pen #2396 for testing acid
content in
wrapping papers and boxes for lace storage. You can do your own research
at:

http://www.lightimpressionsdirect.com/
You can also read about tissue and storage boxes at Light Impressions,
then
buy locallly.

Good acid-free tissue and boxes can absorb acids from the atmosphere in
which
they are stored. Test them at least every 10 years, and replace the
paper/boxes if the pen indicates acid content. Those of you working in
museums and
historic houses -- this is important. Volunteers do not always know this.

If supplies are purchased in large quanties, the price per unit is lower.
Some groups pool their financial resources, and divide a large supply of
paper/boxes to get a better price break per user.
Teach your children about your collections and how to care for them. They
study pollution in school, and will remember.
Newbies: The acid from wood pulp causes textiles to yellow or turn brown
(even colored textiles suffer, though you may not see it as quickly). The
next
step? The fibers in the textiles begin to break down. It is the most
common
type of damage to textiles. In time, these fabrics begin to weaken and
disintegrate. Climate conditions can make this happen at different rates
of speed.
Every museum conservator warns against this type of damage. Do not trust
what
shops and dry cleaners use!

Lacking the money for proper tissue or boxes? Store your collection in
thoroughly washed and rinsed (to remove detergents, starches and bleaches)
white
cotton/linen pillow cases. Watch the pillow case fabric for any yellowing
or
browning. If you see any, rewash/rinse the pillow cases and store in a
different piece of furniture.

Save this message in your conservation binder, please. The information is
not that easy to find, and old books give advice that has proven to be
damaging
-- one being to use blue tissue paper. Fact is, blue tissue paper can be
made
from wood pulp. A second problem is that if colored tissue gets damp or
wet
it can transfer the dyes to your lace and may be impossible to remove.

People who have reused dress
shop
paper have learned this - the hard way -- with damaged garments lovingly
packed
away in them.

Print the description on the site given
yesterday, so you
can show the suppliers in your country what you want. Here it is -
again.

One archival supplier is Light Impressions of Rochester, NY, USA. I
have
frequently recommended their pH Testing Pen #2396 for testing acid
content in
wrapping papers and boxes for lace storage. You can do your own
research at:

http://www.lightimpressionsdirect.com/
You can also read about tissue and storage boxes at Light Impressions,
then
buy locallly.

Good acid-free tissue and boxes can absorb acids from the atmosphere in
which
they are stored. Test them at least every 10 years, and replace the
paper/boxes if the pen indicates acid content. Those of you working in
museums and
historic houses -- this is important. Volunteers do not always know
this.

The next

Store your collection in
thoroughly washed and rinsed (to remove detergents, starches and
bleaches) white
cotton/linen pillow cases. Watch the pillow case fabric for any
yellowing or
browning. If you see any, rewash/rinse the pillow cases and store in a
different piece of furniture.

Save this message in your conservation binder, please. The information
is
not that easy to find, and old books give advice that has proven to be
damaging
-- one being to use blue tissue paper. Fact is, blue tissue paper can be
made
from wood pulp. A second problem is that if colored tissue gets damp or
wet
it can transfer the dyes to your lace and may be impossible to remove.

Re: [lace] ebay "tatted" coasters

2005-05-16 Thread Ann Blunden
The 'tatting ladys' influence obviously has spread to this person, Could
some one please inform her/him that they are bobbin lace not tatting.

I am not sufre how to do that my self. It will be interesting to see if
she/he changes her/or his information.

Sorry - that sounds offensive to tatters. It wasn't meant to read like
that - just that the piece on EBay is clearly not tatting and it would be
impossible to produce those results (eg half stitch diamonds) in tatting
Sue
Absolutely unbelievable tatting :). I'd like to see a tatter produce work
like that!

Dear lace makers,

I will be unsubscribing to Arachne in about a months time as I will be
doing a tour to UK, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Also briefly to some
places in Europe.
My question is, Is hand made lace still made in Burano in Italy and it is
affordable for tourists or do they sell machine lace for mass production
and sale?

Could any one in the know over there in UK please tell me when in July, this
event will be, and if there will be any lace related things to see or buy
there. I will be in Birmingham for 5 days up to the 1st August, so will have
time to look at this. I would also love to know if there are any
scrapbooking displays, supplies and demonstrations there as well. Thank you
in anticipation.

[lace] re info about craft Hobby &stich International at NEC

2005-06-28 Thread Ann Blunden
Thanks to every one who answered this question. We came across the
information about the Craft show when DH put in a search on the Birmingham
Site for every thing that was on in July. This site came up but with no
date. However I put in the NEC site and put in enquiry for July and saw
that there is an antique show there during the time we are there so I will
look fori any lace related items ( I will only look not necessarily buy! but
that depends on how much every thing is)

[lace] Visiting Lace places in UK

2005-10-22 Thread Ann Blunden

Dear Arachnids

When I was in UK over August I visited the Fan Museum in Greenwich. There
were no lace fans on display at that time, as they were having another
exhibition of different fans. There was an unmounted lace leaf on display.
In a way I was disappointed but I realise that Museums have to change their
exhibitions to get in the people. I went to Dudley and saw the Lace Guild's
Exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery. I also went to Nottingham twice
and went to the Lace Place and the Lace Museum. I found the little blue book
that the Lace Guild puts out very good, as it lets you know about lace on
display all over the UK.

Is anyone else getting emails from lace that they've already received a
few days previously? I've been experiencing 'groundhog day' on and off for
the past few days.

Hello Adele and David,
could it be as it was in Germany still 70 years ago. Works done in very
fine threads, wool or cotton or silk, in what ever sort of handicraft,
knitting or crochet, named lace more exact Strick-spitze, Häkel-spitze.
And the author uses the word lace in such sense?
