[lace] USA Meet & Greet
Dear Friends, It's only a couple of weeks now till I'll be in New York singing at Carnegie Hall, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to remind you of the Meet and Greet which Stormy Lee has arranged for me. It's on January 26th at Amy's Yarn Shop in Kelso, WA. I think it's going for most of the day and sometime during that day I will be giving a talk on my lace making history. I will of course also bring as much lovely lace as I can fit in for you to enjoy. I do hope some of you can make it. RE: [lace] Book recommended
Dear Jeri The Subject line of David's memo says "Book recommended". Searched, and only found Kindle references to The Lace Weaver by Lauren Chater. Please forgive my ignorance, but can it be purchased as a REAL book - by my definition? Iâm sure itâs a paper back because Iâve seen the cover photo. [lace] More on Maeve
Dear Friends, I see there have been no replies yet about the whereabouts of Maeve. Apart from making travel pillows she also made the most beautiful hand painted porcelain bobbins. I have a pair of Australian Galahs by her but alas the bobbin necks have broken. Iâm fairly sure Maeve also wove her own tartans as well as playing bagpipes. Now if only I could remember her maiden name!! Last heard of in Florida about 15 â 20 years ago. [lace] New Beginning
Dear Friends, FINALLY I've wound some bobbins and begun some lace. It's been 2 years now since I've made any bobbin lace. I've chosen a simple Toender edging and later on will be having some maths questions as I'm planning on gathering this straight edging around a corner. Something which I've not done before. As I'm off to Belgium and Vietnam on July 2nd I thought I'd get out a travel pillow I've had for many years and never used. I know it was made for me by Maeve who moved to Florida. I think her surname became BROWN while she was on Arachne. Does anyone know what became of Maeve?? I do know she played bagpipes! In the meantime I'm struggling a bit with this pillow. It looks delightful but the central barrel shaped part keeps rising up out of its slots because of the weight of the bobbins. I'm only using some 36 pairs. RE: [lace] Machine lace and its manufacture
Devon, I suppose that as we enjoy the lavish handmade flounces of mid-century royal lace, we should spare a thought for the English machine lace makers who were collateral damage, forced to become farm hands in Australia. My understanding is that there were 3 shiploads of lace makers from Calais. The people from them settled in Adelaide, Sth Australia and Maitland in NSW. Their intention was to establish a lace making community but then in 1851 the gold rushes happened and they all dispersed. G'day Nancy, It would be interesting to do a survey of the bobbin-lacemaking members of IOLI about area of education, highest degree obtained and when, career field, types of bobbin lace specialized in, maybe things like primarily self-taught or not, others?, and compare the stats from that to stats Along with that I think it would be interesting to include such things as ability to read music, play an instrument, sing in a choir etc. I just have a feeling that many of us do. [lace] West Coast USA lacemakers
Dear Friends, Now here's a date to put in your diary if you live somewhere near the west coast of the USA. On Saturday 26th January 2019, our dear friend Stormy Lee Van den Houten would like to host a Meet and Greet for me. If more than a few would like to visit we will hold it at Amy's Yarn shop in Kelso, WA. It is just a bit down the road from Castle Rock, and Amy has lots of space and an Espresso bar :) Bottom line, Stormy says I can invite both Portland Guild and Lacemakers of Puget Sound, Seattle, or the whole west coast if I am so inclined :) (and I am so inclined). We can make lace or just tell stories. I'll certainly have lots of show and tell which I'll bring with me from Australia. This is just the preliminary announcement. I'll keep you informed of details and pass on our numbers to Stormy. After my performance at Carnegie Hall, NY, I shall be staying at the Timberland Inn at Castle Rock, WA from January 22nd till 28th and then flying home to Australia. RE: [lace] Re: Lace Revival of the 1970's
Dear Jane and other Friends, Grandma retired. By now, Mum had a family and spent 4 years abroad. We were in Tasmania and I remember Mum being interviewed on TV (ABC?) about her lacemaking and I thought she did some teaching (I must check this!). I've sometimes wondered what happened to lacemaking in Tasmania in the '60s. I smiled when I read this as it was in Tasmania that I bought my first pillows. That was years before I could maker bobbin lace but I knew what they were. It was in a big old barn of an antique shed out at New Norfolk where I spied TWO Princess Pillows from 1903. There was a scrap of lace but only 3 bobbins. I reckon that was about 1981. A couple of years earlier I'd bought Miss Tebbs' book and a reel of very fine thread at a shop in Riversdale Road, Camberwell in Melbourne. I'm sure many here will remember that shop. However it wasn't until early in 1996 after I'd joined this Arachne List that I began to learn Bobbin Lace. In fact I'm probably the first person to learn it online! Wow that's already over 20 years ago and I've learned a lot more since then. [lace] S vs. Z Threads
Dear Jeri and other Friends, She has often wondered why no one has written something comprehensive on S vs. Z I've never really bothered checking my threads as it hasn't been a problem for me. However, I always remember back around 1995 or 96 when I showed my very large antique table cloth to Rosemary Shepherd she told me it's most unusual because it is worked in a Z twist. I am aware of the difference. This shawl is black lace worked at Le Puy in France, and I found it in a box of doilies in an antique shop in Hobart, Tasmania back in the early 80s. I recall that it cost me a mere AUS$20!! Each of the 4 sides is over 2 metres in length. RE: [lace] Threading needles
Dear Susan. To easily thread most needles, lay a length of thread over the shaft of the needle & pull sharply, grasping both thread ends firmly between thumb & forefinger. Slide the crisply folded thread off the shaft & lay the eye of the needle over the fold you are pinching. If the thread doesn’t pop up thru the eye, flip the needle over & try the other side. My mother taught us this and said it was the way a blind person could thread a needle (that was back in the 50s)!! RE: [lace] Re: Block pillow question
G'day Joseph, I have two main pillows which I love working on. One is an ordinary cookie pillow - a large one about 60cm diameter - which I was told was the last one made here in Victoria, AUS stuffed with horse hair. The other one for larger pieces I had specially made by an old friend now deceased. You see I really HATE having to move lace up. So he made me a lace desk which consists of 6 polystyrene blocks each 30cm square. i.e. a 2 rows of 3. They fit very tightly into a 10cm frame of the same polystyrene. All is covered by navy blue drill (stiff cotton) and set into a wooden border. The base is a ply wood. The whole thing is very light and easily transported from room to room. Oh each block has a round hole under it so I can push it up to move them round when needed. I just love it. Many thanks Len Purcell of Mt. Eliza. Oh and BTW the best thing I ever bought was a large hand made wooden Lazy Susan on which to sit the cookie pillow. I can turn it at will with one finger. It sits on a round foot stool. David in Ballarat, AUS 30" might be too big for comfort. I find that I have trouble seeing up close because the lace is so far away even in a 23" one. I for sure wouldn't want one any bigger. [lace] More on our exhibition
Dear friends, I've just come across the email I sent to Arachne on the night of the opening of our Exhibition back on 15th January 1998 at 0130hrs. It brings back lots of memories and I'm sure you'll enjoy reading it (again) after some 19 years. Just noticed that back then I even signed emails with "love" What a hoot. David in Ballarat, AUS Dear Friends, What a wonderfully exciting day we've had here in Ballarat today! Yes, the Arachne International Lace Exhibition was formally opened in spectacular fashion. Richard McGarvie (our former Governor) and his wife came up from Melbourne to perform the official duty, and (I shouldn't perhaps say it) but fortunately, decided not to stay the night. The day was a scorcher with the temperature hovering around the 40C (104F) mark and huge banks of thunder clouds building ever higher on the horizon. Richard and Lesley came to my place first for some final information regarding Arachne and its organisation. Cousin Pam was also here from Geelong, as well as my friend Maureen - the one with the super fine nose who could detect whether there was any cat smell left in the house. We all then set off for Montrose Cottage for the opening at 4:00 p.m. Everybody assembled in the private barbeque area (about 50 people in all) and what a thrill it was to meet again with Pam Lloyd and her DH Ian, as well as Chris Hancock and her parents from Adelaide. Ballarat's Town Crier performed a special opening cry honouring all those most generous members of Arachne who had loaned us their treasures for this wonderful exhibition. Then the local head person for the Tourism Board gave a short speech, and this was followed by Richard McGarvie's speech. Although Richard is now 72 years old, his speech was just incredible. As a seasoned performer in his former roles of Governor and Supreme Court Judge, he had memorized his speech and tempered it with a delightful smattering of history, fact, and humour. I know he really knows nothing about lace, yet he had studied our Bios thoroughly and was able to summarize just what sort of people lace makers seem to be. He also came up with a couple of very clever definitions of lace which have not been discussed here before. I know that both Chris Hancock and Pam Lloyd took a video of the entire opening and one of them is going to do us the honour of typing out Richard's speech in full for us all to relish. Drinks and horses doovers were served and then the rain (which we have prayed for here for sooo long) came pelting down, suitably accompanied of course by crashes of thunder and flashes of lightning. I think it has been a good three months since Ballarat had a decent shower at all. I shall leave this here as I know that both Pam and Chris want to write their impressions as soon as they are back home. Pam should be online tomorrow night and Chris on Friday. So you have that to look forward to. I can tell you that all who were present were simply over-awed with what they saw, and I was so impressed with the number of husbands who had never noticed lace before. I do hope some of their comments have been recorded, because they certainly had their eyes opened today - and knew it! RE: [lace] About OUR Exhibition of 1998
Dear Janis, I so enjoyed reading that speech. The Hon. Richard Mcgarvie sounds like a very human person with a great sense of humour as well as appreciation of the lace exhibition. Cousin Dick (as we called him) was a hoot. Sadly he died in 2003 from Motor Neurone Disease. I wish I had seen the exhibition. Are there any pictures on the net for us to see? [lace] About OUR Exhibition of 1998
Dear Friends, Today I was looking through some old files on Arachne and was reminded of the Exhibition I organised back in 1998. It was held here in Montrose Cottage, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia and I'm sure was the first such exhibition organised solely through the internet. I thought you might be interested to read the speech given by The Hon. Richard McGarvie when he opened the exhibition, so I'll reproduce it here in full. He did this all off the top of his head. In another email I shall post the details of the lace work for your interest. David in Ballarat, AUS The speech made by The Hon. Richard McGarvie at the opening of the International Lace show, January 14th, 1998. Richard was a former Governor of Victoria and my mother's 2nd cousin. "Thank you Brian, thank you Tom. Lesley and I are always delighted to be in Ballarat, we are particularly delighted today. We think that this unique International lace show could not have found a better home than Ballarat, in all of Australia it is the obvious place to be held. "Lacework is a craft of great beauty, we all come to have what today will be for us a feast of beauty which has quite definite indications of pleasure. Lace has been part of our culture for many, many years and that famous supreme court judge in the United States, poet and philosopher, Oliver Wendell Holmes wished to illustrate discord he said "discord is like hedgehogs dressed in lace, a great contrast". When Samuel Johnson wanted to emphasise Greek, he said: "the great value of Greek, sir, Greek is like lace, a man gets as much as he can." "This exhibition is symbolic of world cohesion. The fact that it is being held here in Eureka Museum and Montrose Historic Cottage reminds us that there is on exhibition today lacework which was made in Australia in the 1850s and modern lacework from all around the world, modern lace from Australia, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, from Israel and Denmark. "The Macquarie dictionary tells us that lace is a net-like ornamental fabric made of threads and that makes us reflect that we have had very great advantage of a net like communication fabric made of electronics, because without the internet and without Arachne, the internet association, it would not have been possible to organise this. "It's not only part of our culture, lacework is part of world culture, and when Lesley and I in October 1983 were in that beautiful city of Bruges in Belgium during the Festival of the Canals, one of the things we delighted in seeing was the laceworkers of Bruges doing their work out on the footpath; men, women with centuries of experience behind them. "When we read the programme we learn a bit about laceworkers. One can't but read those biographical details in the programme without realising that laceworkers enjoy making lace. There's another feature; lace of course is used in another way: to lace someone's coffee is to put spirits in it either with their knowledge or without, and we find from those biographies that there is a very real spirit that permeates laceworkers, and it's a humourous self-mocking spirit. You can't help reading those biographies without realising that those people are very good people who enjoy laughing at themselves, and I suppose there is nothing more valuable for us all than to realise how inherently ridiculous we are, and enjoin in the general laughter about that. It is I think very fortunate that people like that have been brought together through the Arachne organisation that is involved and we all owe a great debt, the whole community not only those of us who are here, to David Collyer who has been the moving spirit in getting this together and we owe a great deal to co-operation which has come from well around the world. "Now, it's always useful in opening an exhibition of some craft or some particular skill if one can claim to have some connection. I can claim to have a connection to lace. I was a judge of the Supreme Court for 16 years and on a formal occasion, the opening of the legal year when the Supreme Court judges went in their robes to St Pauls, in addition to our full bottom wigs, and our Windsor breeches and our black stockings we had a lace jabot (Brian has one got almost the same) and lace cuffs. So I have had the benefit of lace workers over the years. I congratulate everyone who has been involved and with great pleasure I now declare open the International Lace Show and I will now be led inside and symbolically I will lift the chain so that you can all go into see the exhibition without being pole vaulters." - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] torchon ground / gimp writing
G'day Jenny, wanted to use torchon ground with gimp writing words like Love, Hope, Joy. My problem is that I am not sure how or even if gimp can do cursive writing - can you direct me to a book, website or person who may have the alphabet and or words already sorted out? I could do it but haven't tried for many years now. I know I used the classic point ground grid of 53 degrees. Of course the finer the grid, the more leeway you have in moving the gimp. All you do is print out the grid, then do your writing in 2B pencil on this grid making changes with a rubber until you've got it right. I probably would rule horizontal lines to ensure accuracy unless the writing is on a curve of course. Then you can add whatever edging you want around it. Just go for it Jen. Re: [lace] David Collyer.. please
OK Brian here I am. I acquired only 2 old Tasmanian bobbins back around 1980 when I bought 2 Princess Pillows (one had work on it). One of those bobbins has since broken but the other is OK. However, I know that these pillows date from 1903 so I doubt they belonged to convicts. David David, could you drop me a line please, particularly about your Tassie bobbins. The Richard Dillingham research has led me to the Female Convict Factories in van Diemen's Land, and lace makers have been mentioned by one researcher. It had dawned on me that the parlous state of the lace making industry at that time, and the moral attitudes of magistrates in Britain, might well have led to a number of female lace makers being deported. I am willing to bet you have done the research already! Brian - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] spanish lace pins
Linda, When working point ground the "Ulrike" way, we are advised to use fat pins for honeycomb and picots and thin pins for the rest. Different heads would be nice, so I would know which is which during the work, and especially while sorting the pins afterwards. While I don't follow all Ulrike's ideas religiously, I do use a thicker pin for starting the work and also all round the edge for picots. That way there's no real hassle in sorting them at the end. The bigger pins for the starting line make such a difference in fine work when it comes to joining the lace after many months of work. Dear Friends. > Salt sets dyes too, but I prefer to use vinegar. The rule of thumb I was taught as a child was that vinegar was for animal fibers (silk and wool), while salt was for plant ones (cotton and linen) While it's been many years since I did any dying, when I did (and it was always homespun wool) I used Alum as a mordant with good effect - certainly much better than salt. Re: [lace] hints on Google searching
G'day Jenny If I type in "Jenny Brandis" arachne to Google.com.au I get 1,500 results So you can see, choosing your words carefully can impact your results. Adding the inverted commas in front and behind my name forces the search to only give results that have the 2 words in a phrase. This rule about the inverted commas is vital for easy searching. It also applies of course to an entire phrase or sentence (in the case of poems or songs). To add a little more to your comments: when your first page of results appear you can then click on "advanced search". There you will find a window which says something like "exclude these words". Then if you were searching say the surname FLEMYNG for family history, you can type FLEMING, FLEMMING and Jason. He's a popular UK actor who drives me crazy when Im researching my FLEMYNGs!! [lace] Knitting on planes
Dear Friends, I meant to tell you all about this a while back and have finally remembered. In October when I flew back to Australia from Vietnam on Virgin Airlines I finally managed to smuggle my knitting on board the plane and between Singapore and Melbourne was able to knit half a sock! Oh what a pleasure to while away those horrible hours. Here's how. In Saigon I found the correct size in a set of bamboo knitting needles. I put the ends of the 4 needles inside large eucalyptus seed pods with a length of elastic between to keep them firm. Then shoved them inside a ball of wool and wrapped the whole thing in a plastic bag and placed it deep inside my hand luggage. This bag was scanned twice in Saigon and 3 times in Singapore with no questions asked. Also inside my wallet alongside a seam I had blue-tacked a darning needle for sewing in the ends. Re: [lace] Transparent Film
Alice, In the USA, it's Back To School time in the stores. I found transparent film book covers in my local dollar store. They come in various colors, some quite bright, and some of them are light enough to use over patterns. I've been using this stuff for 20 years now. It seems to be getting hard to come by so I always buy a roll when I see it. I prefer the pale blue for white thread and the pale green or yellow for black thread. The orange works well for either. Don't forget that a great idea (after you've stuck it on to your pricking) is to give it a quick scrub with a brand new dish washing scourer pad. This will get rid of the gloss in a matter of seconds and makes a world of difference when you're making your lace. [lace] Old Friends
Dear Friends wherever you are, This is just a cheery note to brighten up the chatter. Nearly 20 years ago now I was involved with my first exchange on Arachne (late 1995) and was terrified as I'd only been making bobbin lace for a couple of months. However, I took the bull by the horns and managed to produce something acceptable. The recipient was Stormy Lee of Castle Rock, Washington, USA. Funny thing was that I thought with a name like Stormy, she was probably some young child of a hippy! But no. She is mainly Native American and it's her real name :) What's more she's a couple of years older than I am. Stormy and I have become and remain very close friends, but it was only this week that I learned she was just as terrified as I was and was also just a beginner!!! Dear Friends, this is just a handy tip (or reminder because sometimes I forget to do it). Re: [lace] Point ground question
Clay, However, I have found that in Binche, when I have long stretches of half-stitch, punctuated by gimps, the more pressing need is to be certain that the same bobbin is leading through all of this, so that giant holes don't appear when tensioning "downstream", so to speak. In cases like this, I may even add two twists. I fully agree with all you wrote. However, if you imagine a large leaf with a gimp or pair of gimps acting as the vein, it is a passive pair passing from one side to the other, so the leading bobbin is unaffected. It is this passive pair which I am wondering was given a twist as it passed through the gimp. Actually I've found it doesn't make a whole lot of difference, except that I reckon the work just looks better if I don't twist it. That way both threads in the passive pair will keep going in their original direction. There are no great holes because of the gimp and the leading bobbin going round a pin. Gosh it's far easier just to DO it than try and talk about it in mere words!! :) David in Ballarat, AUS - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Point ground question
Adele, I would have to see a picture of the two techniques to understand exactly what you're talking about. It seems to me that if you have, say, a half-stitch diamond next to another half-stitch diamond and you don't put on at least 1 extra twist, the two half-stitch areas would just become one big area. So I know I'm missing something here. Yes. You're missing the fact that there's one or sometimes 2 gimps between the areas of half stitch - but that's all. It works OK either way, but I just feel it's better if the pair which crosses the gimp to become part of the other motif, or other side of a leaf, does not receive an extra twist just because it crossed a gimp. The leading bobbins either side of the gimp don't alter their function, but the pair that have crossed over keep their original direction. Like I said - it's very hard to put something into words which takes about half a second to actually do thanks David in Ballarat, AUS - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Point ground question
Dear Friends, I have a question which I think will prove difficult to put into words. If you are working 2 half stitch motifs side by side, or perhaps passing a pair of bobbins backwards and forwards over the vein in a leaf, do you give that pair a twist or not before including it in the other motif? I used to and found that handy to get bobbins which were running low on thread over to the edge. But this year I've taken to not giving them that twist thus ensuring continuity in the direction of the traveling threads and the work does seem to look better. Comment most welcome. Re: [lace] Chantilly Lace
Clay, I have been asked to make a wedding dress for my niece, and started looking on the Internet to see what fabrics might be available. Imagine my surprise when I discovered "Handmade bobbin lace from the city of Chantilly France"! Judging from the pictures, some of it is awful, some not bad (but expensive), and I would wager that it is all machine made and possibly hand-finished. http://www.housefabric.com/Chantilly-Lace-C285.aspx H. My first thought was "how come they've got pictures in a slightly blurry shade of pink. That's certainly no way to show off hand made lace these days. Or is it to hide the fact that it's machine made? David in Ballarat, AUS - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Re: Lace with and without an end use
Clay, I fall into the "process" group as well. I can't think when I've worn my lace, and I can count on one hand the pieces I've made as gifts. Like Robin, I love the process and the challenge. But beyond that, I am also rather obsessive, and I can't bear *not* to finish something - that feels like defeat to me! I have two pieces on display in my house, but most of my lace is in a notebook. Several years ago! I started a difficult piece and was never happy with the way it was going. I finally decided it needed to be worked with a larger thread. I cut the bobbins off, and put the fragment away (in the notebook). I am now eyeing the pattern again, because I *will not* be defeated by it! While you and I have very similar attitudes to tackling a pricking, I'm afraid my walls are covered with framed pieces of my lace. I've worn a bow tie and jabot a couple of times. Re: [lace] Janice Blair's Poppy
Janice, I've now assembled the 2 poppies I made and thought I'd tell folks what I did. Having drawn the black stamens on each of the 4 petals, I selected the 4 longest threads on each and made a Beds plait for about 4cm. Then I stitched the 4 petals together up the lower half of each side, and cut the remaining threads to about 1cm long. After that I took some acid free craft glue and thoroughly glued all those 1cm ends together to make a "mat" for the hole between the petals. As soon as it was dry I used 3 strands of DMC black thread and using that mat as a base, fill the area with bullion stitches. Lastly I took the 4 plaits and tied them into 2 reef knots forming 2 arches about 1cm high, glued that knot and trimmed off the remainder of the plaits. The poppy is now easily attached to my suit jacket with a safety pin from the back through the 2 "U" shaped arches. Thanks again Janice. David in Ballarat, AUS. [lace] Janice Blair's Poppy
Dear Janice and other Friends, April 25th is ANZAC Day here in Australia and so I've spent today making one of your red Remembrance Day Poppies. It's really come out well, so tomorrow I shall make another for my best mate Des which we can then wear as we march in Adelaide, South Australia where our entire Battalion is having its first ever reunion since Vietnam in 1970. I have to say though, that as I worked it, I couldn't help but think what a great project this would make for a beginner!! You can easily finish one in a day; you'd learn hanging on and throwing out pairs; cloth stitch and twists and end up with a useful object. Plus, for me, it finally got rid of some thick old red crochet cotton I'd been hanging on to for years awaiting the right project. :) I'm sure Janet won't mind me mentioning her website again:- www.lacemakersofillinois.org David in Ballarat, AUS - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] What is the biggest and the hardest piece of lace you have ever done?
Sherry, I am curious as to what people have made out there in Lacingland that you would call the ultimate piece of lace you have ever made or felt good about when finished. Mine would have to be the large edging in Toender which I made a few years ago. The pricking was very skew-whiff and that's all there was to go by. I'm really proud of that piece. Re: [lace] Torn veil - help needed
Dear Sue, A friend's granddaughter is getting married in September, and thinking of wearing the Brussels Lace veil, which has been worn by 50 or so brides in the family. So it has been brought out for inspection, and a jagged edge tear discovered in it. I was sent photos today to see what I thought could be done with it, and don't really know what to suggest. I have uploaded these photos to Flickr, and am hoping that someone can give me advice on what to tell them. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lacemaker/sets/72157639451992576/ Oh what a shame. Still, it's there now so let's fix it! I think if it were me, I would first match the thread as best I could. Then make a small pricking of plain point ground of the appropriate size and rework an ample square of it. I would then sew this over the hole securely and finally neatly trim away the torn edges from the underside. Should only take a day or two. Others may have a completely different idea though and I shall look forward to hearing their suggestions. Clay, Having said that, there is no reason you couldn't set up a group as you suggest, and see if it works! The Flickr account is still there for those who like it. I don't need to as there's already a number of Lace groups on Facebook where I've been putting my pictures. The one I subscribe to is called Bobbin Lace Makers and is so easy and just wonderful to use. There is no need for any paranoia regarding privacy. Marianne, However, I can still do Bucks, and my goal is to eventually tackle Miss Channer's mat. However, I can't seem to find a source for the pattern. Can anyone tell me where I could obtain it? There is only a pricking, no working diagram, and I have a feeling that it's out of print right now. Someone will know. I must say how much I enjoyed making it when I did. I reduced the pricking to about 75% and used a fine black silk. It's framed and hanging on my wall. [lace] Great new lamp
Dear Friends, today when I was in Aldi I spied an interesting little lamp and at $17 thought it worth giving a try. It's called the BBQ Light by Coolabah so is probably only available in Australia. The globe itself contains 12 small LEDs and they are mounted on a long aluminium swivel neck. The whole devise has a sturdy clamp to go on a desk or coffee table, and then underneath the clamp there are 3 very strong magnets. I can't really see the necessity for the magnets, but have to say they are simply marvelous for holding my cigarette tin!! It runs on 3 AAA batteries. So it will be interesting to see how long these last. I'd say probably quite a while or the whole thing wouldn't be worth manufacturing as it's entirely aluminium. The beauty of the neck is that it is so long that I can pull it immediately over where I'm working on a complicated piece of Chantilly lace. RE: [lace] Blue film
Dear Friends, It is not always necessary to use blue film on a pricking. I photocopy onto blue card and do not cover it with film. I find the film too shiney when making lace. I have always bought the cheap shiney blue film from the newsagents or the Reject Shop for about AUD $1 a roll. These days I often forget to treat the shininess. However, if it worries you, it can be removed in about 20 seconds by simply scrubbing with a brand new dishwashing scouring pad. Re: [lace] Old Beds
Dear Lorelei, I'm sorry to say this, but the clothwork parts in David's piece look a little suspicious. The passives make vertical ridges. That happens in machine made laces, not handmade cloth stitch. And the picots on the edge are rather peculiar, too. Far too long. But I'm not certain.
