[lace-chat] Vancouver Island
Hi, For those list members who are knowledgeable about Vancouver Island (and I know that there are quite a few of you :-) ), I have a question for you. I would like to stay somewhere near the north of the island (I've already spent a couple of months working at Comox so have seen that bit!) and I am looking for recommendations on where to stay. Ideally, I would like it to be a cabin or similar rather than a hotel or BB as I am very independent! I am looking to 'escape from it all' for a few days so would also prefer to be away from the centre of any 'town' (though having somewhere relatively close would probably be good). I have a Subaru Forester so access via logging roads would not be an issue if that were required. So, does anyone have any recommendations? Please email me if you do ... Many thanks in advance, Helen ([EMAIL PROTECTED] (at least for the next week or so) in Richmond, BC a smidge south of Vancouver on the west coast of mainland Canada where it is a beautifully sunny day) To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] Portland
Hi, If anyone on the list is a member of the Portland Lace Society (in Oregon, USA) then could they please contact me privately? Thanks, Helen ([EMAIL PROTECTED] in Vancouver, BC on the west coast of mainland Canada where the weather doesn't seem to know whether to be cloudy, sunny or rainy!) - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] Lace in an In-Flight Magazine!
Hi, I just have to take a few minutes away from work (any excuse!) to tell you about Air Canada's Enroute magazine. I was flying on Thursday night (for a brief weekend at home) and decided to look at the (February) in-flight magazine. Imagine my surprise when, on page 24, I came across a page all about lace in designs - called Hello, Doily. Okay, so it is either prints or machine-made, but it is a start. To quote the opening text It's not just for grannies anymore. From the catwalk to the home, designers are reinventing lace in bold new ways. There are then 6 items, all pictured. They were: 1. Lace-print umbrella from Chantal Thomass (www.ogilvycanada.com) 2. Cotton and lace dress from Chanel (www.chanel.com) 3. Mask from Malabar 4. Lace and satin pillows from Pina Gina 5. Vanilla cream foundation (with lace all over the packaging) from Pout (www.holtrenfrew.com) 6. Carenaro Superior Chocolates from Genevieve Grandbois (www.chocolatsgg.com) I have quoted the websites from the article but I haven't checked any of them to see if they have the appropriate pictures available. I'm sure that if someone finds a good picture they will pass it on to the group :-) I do have the (folded and rather crumpled) page if anyone wants a scan - though that would have to wait until I get home next time. Back to work, I suppose :-( Helen ([EMAIL PROTECTED] in Vancouver, British Columbia on the west coast of mainland Canada where it is foggy but it is still nice to think I will be going home to my house tonight instead of to a hotel!) - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] International Money Transfer Question
Hi, I am hoping that you can help me. I am looking for information on transferring money (inheritance - several thousand GBP) internationally. I need to get some money from a UK building society account to a Canadian credit union (similar to a building society) account (where it will be converted to CAD). If I get it wired I lose out by a) lots of intermediaries (neither end has direct access) each taking their cut and b) a lousy exchange rate (as it would be done by one of the intermediaries) so that really doesn't appeal (the exchange rate is bad enough already). I am considering a bankers draft or a cheque sent to me instead. I am not sure whether one is considered more secure than the other - any ideas? Also I am having to consider how it should be sent. At the moment I am thinking of using FedEx or similar rather than trusting the mail, but again I am willing to be convinced otherwise (I'm not very familiar with other options). Oh, and it needs to be a relatively simple method as the people in the UK I am dealing with are clueless (my uncle and his son-in-law - a Cambridge University don but totally ignorant!) I have been told that I have to take 100% responsibility for the money getting to me okay (ie if it goes astray I am the one that loses) so I am really keen on finding the right answer! I need to make a decision very soon as I have to let the UK end know so please send any responses by Sunday 7th November. Thanks in advance, Helen ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) in sunny Vancouver, BC on the west coast of mainland Canada where it is getting cold though thankfully we don't get the same sort of winters as the rest of the country :-) To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] Sisters
Hi, I am a bit behind on digests but I thought I would add my bit on lacemaking sisters (and other family members). My grandmother was a lacemaker (for pleasure) having learnt in her childhood. She taught my two sisters the basics when they were about 9 and 8, though by the time it was my turn she wasn't interested in teaching any more :-(. The eldest (Sarah) made lace for a while in her late teens/early twenties but has done little since. The middle sister (Susan) got back into lacemaking about the same time and has avidly continued, specializing in Honiton, Beds and Bucks (mostly self-taught). As she says, having learnt tallies at a very early age, she never thought that any aspect of lacemaking would be tricky and therefore hasn't had the mental barriers some of us have faced. She is by far the most proficient lacemaker of the family and regularly contributes patterns to Lace as well as reviewing books for them. She has also come out to Vancouver to teach a Honiton class which was very successful. Then there is me (the baby!) I started trying to make lace in my late twenties when I found evening classes near where I lived at the time (my sisters were too far away to use them). I managed to get to about three lessons before they stopped but I had learnt enough for me to then pick up the basics from some books I was able to buy. Susan has now started teaching our niece (Sarah's daughter, aged five) the basics of Honiton so another generation has become involved. In addition, my Dad makes many of our bobbins and also made my first roller pillow based on one my Grandmother had (which Susan then inherited). I don't know of any other lacemakers in the family as they were pretty much all tenant farmers on both sides. [lace] Beryl Maw's Lace Pack
Hi, Has anyone from North America ordered Beryl Maw's lace pack directly (ie not got someone in the UK to buy it for them)? I am interested to know how much the postage is (in pounds and pence) so that I can send off my order ... Thanks in advance, Helen. [lace] September Lace Days
Hi, A group of us are planning a trip to England in September. I would be interested to know of any lace days during that month as people are interested in buying supplies during the visit. If any of you know of any events then please let me know dates and locations (city/town is fine for now). I am trying to sort out the itinerary and would need to plan to be in the right place at the right time! I also need the data very soon ... Thanks in advance, Helen. [lace-chat] Missing Digests
Hi, I'm just curious, am I the only one that just gets occasional digests? Looking at the recent history, for lace I have got 74, 75, 76, 79, 80 and 83 and for chat I have got 55, 56, 57, 60 and 63. I know the issue is unrelated to mail box size (it would be quite a challenge to come close to filling my inbox). If anyone has any insight into why this might be then I would be interested to hear. Also, if anyone else is having the same problem then have you missed the same digests as me or does it vary? I don't want to switch from getting the digest as I already get hundreds of emails a day (but see above as the volume is not anticipated to be the issue). Please respond to the address below as if it is just sent to lace chat then there is a good chance that I won't see it! [lace-chat] How do you tie a cravat?
Hi, My Dad doesn't like wearing a tie so would like to wear a cravat instead. Unfortunately, not only have I offered to make him one without any idea what it should really look like (dimensions, etc), he doesn't know the correct way to tie it! So, knowing the wonderful knowledge base existing here on the lace chat list, I would like to beg your indulgence and ask for help. Can anyone provide me some answers to my cravat questions? Many thanks in anticipation, Helen ([EMAIL PROTECTED] in Vancouver, British Columbia on the west coast of mainland Canada where it was beautifully sunny until this morning when it started raining) To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
