[lace] Lace Relations

2005-08-24 Thread PhaserBait
Hi All!
I was wondering if I could ask for some help. While at the IOLI convention,
during the Teachers Exhibition, I was looking at all the different types of
lace. The main thought that was going on in my mind was "How are these laces
related?" I can tell the basic differences, like whether a lace was a tape
lace or a point ground, but I was wondering things like which lace came
first, is Princess lace a cross between Tambour and Tape? Which lace is the
oldest? What is the path of lace spreading across Europe?
Can anyone recommend a book(s) for me to start studying?
Many Thanks!

[lace] IOLI convention

2005-08-08 Thread PhaserBait
Hi All!
I got back from the IOLI convention and I had the most WONDERFUL time! I
kept looking around at all the stuff the RMLG (Rocky Mountain Lace Guild) were
doing to keep everything running smoothly and I was really impressed! On
Sunday night, they had the Pajama party. There were some super imaginative
get-ups that night! I don't know her name, but there was one lady with what
looked like an authentic nightgown and lace cap. SIGH!!
When we checked in, we got a fancy badge holder plus a zipper tote bag. I
proceeded to live out of those two items for the week. I could stick my room
card and however much money I was allowing myself in the badge holder, and
class books and supplies in the tote bag. Do you know that I simply locked up
my purse and did not miss it at all? Considering how much stuff one would
need to carry to class, it was quite a load off my shoulders!
The classes that I took were really well set up and the teachers quite
knowledgeable. I took Bobbin Lace with Wire from Carolyn Regnier in the
morning,
and got to sit in on the Lier Lace Class with Greet Rome-Verbeylen in the
afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed both classes, and think I learned a lot.
The arachne lunch was a blast, and it was great finally being able to put
faces to e-names. I must admit, I really loved all the goodies we would get
during the week. There were about four meals included in the registration
fee, and my roommates and I had bought some snacks along so we did not need to
waste money on meals, when we could spend it on more important things. (Like
lace books and bobbins!)
There were no classes on Wednesday, so we visited some of Rebecca's Colorado
friends, it started raining in the afternoon, but I don't know if that
interferred with the IOLI plans or not. It proceeded to rain most of the
night
and the next morning. But as we were doing lace, I don't think anyone minded!
The grand Banquet on Friday night was a ton of fun! People were wearing all
sorts of lace, either projects they completed in classes, or antique lace.
More Sighing!
All in all, I had a great time, and I thank the RMLG for the tons of work
they put in to make the convention a success!
Bless you all!

>From the look of the 1st Anniversary bobbin, I would say that it's a Margaret
>Wall bobbin. The Lace Guild could easily have ordered its bobbins from the
>same maker.

And...No, there is no Arachne Membership Bobbin that I've heard of. We do have
a membership pin. JoAnn, are there any left?

Hi All!
I am out of the enamel logo pins that we had made up a couple of years back, is
there any interest in me getting more? I did have a thought, how about
patches? I saw a web site that does them, and they can do really involved
designs with different colors. Just a thought.
As for the 1st year bobbins, I did those, does anyone remember that pointy head
I did on them? Margaret Wall, to my knowledge, has never done any of the
bobbins that were the "official" Lace@arachne.com bobbins, but we have had
others putting out their own Commeratives.
I am SO glad to hear that we will have the Lacing with wire class after all, at
the IOLI convention, I was just about to cry when I heard it might be
cancelled. I am going to try to be the best student I can, so the teacher does
not regret comming!
Pure joyful sigh!
JoAnne Pruitt
P.S.
Pat Hallam is going to bring the rest of her Commeratives for this year, so if
you do want some and are comming, you will have a chance. I will also be
bringing ALL commeratives from previous years, so you can look those over and
fill in missing items.

[lace] I got my class!

2005-06-11 Thread phaserbait
Hi All!
I got my notice yesterday, and I got my lacing with wire class! I was so
thrilled, because I sent in my form late. WHOO HOO! I've wanted to work with
wire for a long time now, even more since I saw that wire piece in the last
IOLI newsletter! Sigh!
Other good news, I am writing this from a laptop! My DH got us a laptop
because we are going on vacation to Kentucky next week. As soon as we get
there, he and his friend are going to Detroit for a few days, and I get to stay
in Kentucky (with the kids) and work with SIL to scan family photos. We
thought it would be a good idea to have copies of these photos, and we want to
make a set for each sibling. So I had just taken some classes in computer and
working with Photoshop just to be able to handle this! I think this is going
to be great, because with the kids at home during the summer, this is the only
way I can get online to check my mail!
Sipping coffee, and readin' email!

2005-04-01 Thread PhaserBait
Hi everyone!
I just got a message, and realized that I forgot to put down Divider pins!
Yes, they are available, the price is $3.00 US. If you want to know what that
amount is without doing a currency conversion, just look at what the price is
for shipping and handling, it's the same amount.
I also just talked to Pam, she will take credit cards! Isn't that wonderful!
She said that she has some photos of the bobbins on her site now, so we can
drool over them!
Sorry, sorry, sorry about the divider pins!

[lace] Commemorative bobbins

2005-03-25 Thread PhaserBait
Hi everyone!
Once again it is time for the Lace@arachne.com Commemoratives! Every year we
have bobbins, shuttles and other items made up to commemorate the anniversary
of Lace@arachne.com coming on to the web.
This year the vendor who is supplying us with really lovely stuff is
Roseground. Here is a little about them:

Roseground was founded in 1999 to offer a comprehensive service to lacemakers
and tatters based on a thorough understanding of their needs.

Now a leading supplier of tatting and lacemaking supplies, it serves its
customers around the world by mail order and its attendance of lace events. It
uses its experience and knowledge to seek out the latest and the best for the
benefit of its many customers-they know that there is always something new and
exciting at Roseground~a true Lacemaker to Lacemaker service.

Roseground is owned and operated by Pat Hallam and her daughter Pam Sharples.
Pat is a familiar face around the many lacemaking events around the UK and
she has traveled regularly and extensively to teach and seek out lacemaking
throughout the world. She brings over 30 years of lacemaking experience for the
benefit of Roseground's customers.

Pam joined Roseground early in 2004 with the responsibility of all aspects of
the newly acquired bobbin business. She learned lacemaking at a young age
from her mother and enjoys meeting an serving her lacemaking customers.

This year Roseground will be offering East Midlands in wood and bone,
Honitons and Contintals. They will also be offering spangles to go with the
bobbins.
Check their stuff out at www.roseground.com. Along with these items, we will
be offering tatting shuttles, cover cloths, bobbin rolls, and sissor holder.
Also we will offer divider pins, turned handle items (Prickers, Lazy Susans,
and
Latch hooks) Hope you enjoy and find something you like!

I am still waiting to hear about contact people from the other countries, and
the second I do, I will post that info to you all. In the meantime, you can
either order directly from Roseground, if all you need are the bobbins. Pam
said that they can take Paypal, as long as the amount is tranlated into GB
Pounds, and you can ask if they will take your credit card. If you want any of
the
other items, you can send the order on to me. We just want to make sure that
this year goes smoothly. I can take Paypal and checks.

I will send the price lists, like usual, out by country. All you need to do
is download your own county, and delete the others.
Bless you!

[lace] Commeratives!!!

2005-03-23 Thread PhaserBait
Hey everyone! How's it going?
Wanted to let you all know that the commeratives for the Lace@arachne.com are
coming along nicely. The vendor of the commeratives this year is Roseground
bobbins, owned by Pat Hallam and her daughter Pam Sharples. They are goin to
make you some really wonderful Midlands, Bone Midlands, Honitons, and
Contintials. Pam and Pat will also be offering the spangles. Their website is:
www.roseground.com for those who would like to check them out.
I am working on the pricing sheets for the various countries, can I put out
the word for people to act as contact people?
Pam told me that anyone who wants to just order their bobbins, you can order
directly from them. We think this will work out to make sure that orders go
as quickly as possible. If you write them, they can tell you which methods of
payment they will be taking.
As in other years, we will also be offering the Divider pins, cover cloths,
bobbin rolls, tatting shuttles, and sissor holders. If your order includes any
of those items, you can order thru me, or the contact people.
I'm getting everything typed up, and will hopefully get it on the list
tomorrow. Bless you all!

Re: [lace] Stacking Bobbins

2004-07-30 Thread PhaserBait
Hi all!
I've been reading the letters about stacking bobbins. When I did my big
Bucks piece, I was working with 500+ bobbins. I was using anything I could wrap
thread around! For stacking them, I had some pieces of leftover countertop
material. It was thin, strong, and I could cut it easily on my bandsaw. I cut
pieces 2x5 inches, and some 2x2 1/2 inches. I lined all the pieces up, and
drilled a small hole on each end, so I could run a long divider pin down the
pieces while they where stacked. Then I covered them with felt, (since then, it
was recommended to me to use white felt, so any loose threads that work in
match.) The bobbins stacked nicely, and I had room to work! For traveling, I
would pin cover cloths over the stacks of bobbins, and pin, pin, pin! It worked
great for me.
Thanks!

Hi all!
I do have a few bobbins whos' spangles have a lot of meaning for me. One
pair has the beads from a pair of earrings my daughter gave me, but I lost the
backs. I also have a handful of bobbins who's main beads are from a string of
worry beads a teacher gave me WAAAYY back in high school.
BTW, my DH did do more work on the website for the commeratives, so there are
more of the items available to look at.

[lace] 2004 commeratives

2004-03-29 Thread PhaserBait
Hi all!
It's time for the 2004 Arachne Commeratives! We have some really lovely
stuff this year, and I know that you all will flip when you see the goodies!
Our Vendor for this year is Chris Smythe, and you can check out his site at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] This year we get a choice of wood or bone bobbins!
There are photos on my web site to check out, along with photos of the other
items! My web site is: member.aol.com/jspruitt/index.htmWe are still
getting everything on the site, but we do have Chris's bobbins loaded, so you can
see how great they are!
The new item of the year are polo shirts from Lori Howe, they are available
in Navy, and in sizes Small to 4XL. She is offering her cover cloths again,
the ones with the machine embroidery, and they are available in Navy. You can
see them at:
 http://lace.lacefairy.com/Embroidered/ArachneEmb.jpg
These are in addtion to the regularly offered cover cloths, bobbin rolls and
sissors cases, plus all the other goodies.
Well, here we go!

ORDERING INFO FOR USA PEOPLE: Listed below are the items available, and
their prices. Choose what you want, and fill out the mailing info. If you e-mail
me, to either reserve a previous year item, or ask for any info, I still need
your name, address and what you order along with the payment. If you send me
a list of things by email, and then just send me the check, I have a hard
time putting the check with the order. Please have mercy on me and include what
you want with the check. I do have a selection of items left from last year,
so if you missed out, you can still get stuff!
FOR COUNTIRES OUTSIDE THE USA: PLEASE READ!! When I made out the lists in
previous years, I would convert all the prices to the currency of the
different countries. I was trying to make things easier by giving the prices that
way. The problem is, the rate changes changed so much, some people were having
to pay more than they should have. So if it is ok with you all, I am going to
post the prices only in the US currency, and if you could take your amount,
and run it through a currency converter, you can make sure that you only have to
pay the amount needed, and not get caught by the exchange rate pulling a fast
one.
Check the price list and see who is your contact person. Send them the
money, along with the order. They can forward your order to me, and I will fill it
out and mail it directly to you. THE DEADLINE FOR ORDERING BY CONTACT PEOPLE
IS JULY 30TH.After July 30th, you will need to contact me directly to

[lace] 2004 commeratives

2004-03-29 Thread PhaserBait
Hi all!
I'm going to post the info for the commeratives, and I just wanted to give
you all a heads up. My DH and I are still working on getting everything on my
web site, but I do have photos of the bobbins there for all to see. They are
cool.
There is one thing I want to tell everyone. We want to try something new and
I hope it works for everyone. When I would post prices before, I would
convert the currencies, and that would be the price for the season. Well, last
year some people ended up having to pay more than they should, because the
currency changed so much between the US and their country by the summers' end. So
would it be ok if I just post the prices in US currency? Then when you fill
out your order, you run it thru a currency converter, and that way you make sure
you only have to pay what you should. I don't want to make extra work for
everyone, but I also want the prices to be fair.
Hope you all don't mind, if there is a problem please buzz me, and we can get
it fixed.
Thanks!
JoAnne Pruitt

[lace] MCM-I will put photos on web page!

2004-03-11 Thread PhaserBait
Hi all!
Thanks for your well wishes and congrats on my finished project! Yes, I will
be putting a photo of it on my web page, it's time to update it for the
commeratives anyway! I have already started two new projects. My first is a
simple yardage lace, I gotta use up 500+ bobbins with various amounts of thread on
them, and I can't stand the thought of just throwing it out, or spending that
much time unwinding them! Second, my friend Rebecca and I are doing a joint
project. We are hand spinning fiber to make shawls. Rebecca is going to lace
knit hers, and my will be done in bobbin lace. We want to see how the pattern
adapts to the two different kinds of lacemaking. This should keep the both
of us out of trouble for awhile.
But don't bet on it! !
Love,
JoAnne Pruitt

[lace] Commerative time again!

2004-01-15 Thread PhaserBait
Me again!
While I'm so chatty, it's commerative time again! We need a bobbin maker to
make us some bobbins! If you do bobbins, and are interested in being the
vendor for the 2004 [EMAIL PROTECTED] commerative bobbins, please give me a buzz
at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
We usually order about 50-100 midlands, 30 or so contintials, and if you
offer any other type of bobbin, like travel, squares, or what have you, please let
me know. The Arachne group usually likes the price to be between $5-$10 per
bobbin.
Thanks!

[lace] Big finish thank you!

2004-01-15 Thread PhaserBait
Hi all!
I've been reading the hints and tips you all have shared with me about my
Bucks piece, and I have printed out a bunch of them for referral use. I am so
thankful that I can pick the brains of such talented people! I am trying to
contact someone from the ISF to see if they have any requirements about entries,
so hopefully I can get that info and go from there!
Bless you all!

[lace] Big finishing for lace project

2004-01-10 Thread PhaserBait
Hi all!
Long time no write! I am currently working on my big Bucks project, and I
hope to have it done by March. I'd better, because I am hosting the March
meeting for our lace guild, and I promised a "Finished Piece Party"! What I need
to get info for, is: Once I am done, what is the BEST way to finish a
project? I really want this to look good, once I get it done. I also want to enter
this in the Iowa State Fair next summer, so does anyone know, can I frame it,
or do are there rules that the judges have to be able to pick up a piece and
look at the back of it? If I can frame it, should I have the piece attached to
the material, or would it be better to let the framer do that? Can I have
glass in the frame? My thoughts were to wash it, block it, and then stretch
dark blue or black silk on a frame, and stitch the lace to that. Then I would
take it to the framer and let them do the rest. Please, any help would be
wonderful!
Thanks !
