[lace] Further Steps in Honiton Lace

2007-05-20 Thread Jean Nathan
It is hard to find (but I wouldn't class it as a 'rare' book). I paid even
less than Bev for mine a couple of years ago by being in the right place at
the right time. Although I haven't investigated, I wouldn't have thought
that the information it contains can't be found in other books, even if not
presented in the same way. It contains six designs which progress in
difficulty, and the instructions are very detailed for each one so it seems
to be a very good book.

Perhaps those interested in it should lobby Batsford through Anova Books to
try and get them to reprint it so it comes within the pocket of sane people:

http://www.anovabooks.com/imprint/batsford/index.jsp

although there doesn't seem to be a suitable email address through which to
contact them for this purpose - there are plenty of other email addresses on
the site.

Re: [lace] Further steps in Honiton lace

2007-05-19 Thread bevw
Just a thought, maybe it was bought by a book collector, or by a lacemaker
who really wanted it and had the means.
For whatever reason, this title is becoming 'choice.'
I paid GBP 24.00 for my copy, including postage to Canada in 1999, from a
book seller in Devon. It was the only copy that I could locate at the
time.Ithought that was an extravagance, but I sooo wanted the book
(and have used
it)!

That was an absolutely ridiculous price to pay for a book that you could
probably get from Amazon or somewhere like that for as fraction of the
price. I think perhaps some people just get carried away with bidding
and do not bother to check the book prices out on other sites.

Dear Jean,
I already have my copy of this book, but wonder: Is this book still
available through you? I did a quick hunt through my usual sources and do
not find it available other than ebay.

Well the book was listed for 20 days at a buy-it-now price GBP75.00, and he
didn't manage to sell it. So he's now relisted it at the same price for a
further 28 days. Scores an A++ for being persistent and hopeful.

2007-03-27 Thread Jean Nathan
Yes it is out of print, so it will be more expensive than the published
price, but asking for a "Buy it now" price of GBP75.00 is steep and will
probably put most people off. He's quite likely to be left with the book
unsold, unless someone's really desperate for it and has that sort of money
to spare. There are other Honiton books out there, although it perhaps some
would prefer to continue on in the same style as 'Introduction to Honiton
Lace' by the same author .

He'd be better letting the market decide the price with normal bidding - he
might even get more than he's asking now - if he's serious about selling it.
And as for the postage charge - obviously wants an executive salary for
handling considering how long it takes to pack a book, and he'll be taking
more than one item to the post office to actually send it.

All it needs is for Batsford to re-release it tomorrow and he'd be really
stuffed!

I note the price of the second copy on campusi.com is even higher.

I contacted Chrysalis/Batsford about 'Further Steps in Honiton Lace'
featured on their web site with a 30% reduction until Monday even though
it's out of print, and this is the reply I got:

Strange policy. Helene didn't answer my question about why they'd featured
it with the discounted price if it couldn't be bought. They've had a
not-very-good reputation in the past (even though the books are good), and
clearly they're not getting any better.

The only problem with this book on ebay is that I think the person who
wanted it is in the UK, and the seller will only ship to the US and Canada.
Can be got round if the person wanting it can arrange for an Arachnean in
the US to take delivery and send it on. Paying in US dollars won't be a
problem because the seller accepts Paypal.

Abebooks also has a UK web site. http://www.abebooks.co.uk which lists
exactly the same books and suppliers as the US site. The only different is
that you can choose to have UK sources listed first. It's really a directory
of secondhand booksellers who put their books on the list. You can go
through the abe site to buy, or you can deal directly with the sellers. I've
always dealt directly with the sellers, usually by phone and credit card
with no problems in about a dozen transactions.

I checked abebooks as soon as the request appeared on Lace, but there are no
copies listed. I'd also checked http://www.amazon.co.uk because they also
have secondhand copies of books listed on their pages through book dealers.
There was no listing for the book there either.

I've managed to borrow a copy from my local library (and have had it out on

really helpful though, and for this reason would like a copy to refer too
when I have finished all the projects. There is also the danger that
someone might request the book from the library, before I have finished

Does anyone have any idea where I might be able to obtain a copy, preferably
