[lace] International Lace Day
Dear Liz, Blame me for the weather reports. I started this conversation. It seems that different countries have what they call an International Lace Day and they celebrate at different times of the year. Some are celebrating on June 21st, which falls on the third Sunday in June this year. This is Father's Day in some nations this year. I have proposed that we get an idea of climates in the countries where lacemakers reside, and try to come up with *one date that we'll all celebrate* when weather is not extreme. There is power in numbers, and there would be more opportunities for Public Relations across national borders if we could come up with an agreement. I've recommended Spring or Fall. Some places are reporting extreme weather even now (one day before the first day of Summer / first day of Winter below the Equator). If we can all agree, we can send our respective national representatives to the OIDFA Congress in Slovenia next year *with one proposed date for an agreed upon International Lace Day*, and we can recommend that *individual countries celebrating lace use the word National before their celebrations*. This all started because a museum in The Netherlands is calling June 21st International Lace Day, instead of National Lace Day. Some people have reported this date was also seen somewhere on facebook. Some of us asked who determined this date. Internationally, we have Arachne and OIDFA where many people have voices. It would be nice to work this out. Please, would OIDFA's elected officers and the national representatives join this exchange of ideas? It would also be nice to hear from the large national lace guilds throughout the world. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center - In a message dated 6/20/2015 10:08:21 A.M. [lace] International Lace Day-purpose of question
I was thinking of proposing that a certain museum key their object of the day to the International Lace Day, ie. make one of our lacemaker paintings, or even a piece of lace to be object of the day. However, I am not convinced that June 21st is sufficiently well accepted that a third party would find it compelling since it seems to emanate from one museum, and that a rather obscure one. In fact, the museum I have in mind is soliciting suggestions for July, although I don't think that there is a particular date in July that I could associate with lacemaking. Can anyone else think of one? Clearly there is a lot of art that could relate to Bastille Day, for instance, so a more obscure day would be better. (An example given for object of the day is a bust of Julius Caesar for March 15-the ides of March.) But, failing to identify a day in July, I could make a general suggestion and perhaps they would take it into account. What day should I propose for a lace theme? Possibly St. Catherine's Day? If so, when is it, and what argument could be made, or documentation provided that would appeal to a museum? Re: [lace] International Lace Day-purpose of question
Dear Devon, et al, There is a big problem in the US with St. Catherine's Day, because it is November 25, which is right at the time of Thanksgiving here, and that means everyone is making pies and turkey, or eating the same. What day should I propose for a lace theme? Possibly St. Catherine's Day? If so, when is it, and what argument could be made, or documentation provided that would appeal to a museum? [lace] International Lace Day
There are Lace Days all the time. Individual groups sponsor and promote them. The problem is with the word International. If you are celebrating in one country, it should be a National Lace Day. In some cases, to which lacemakers from other nations have been invited. Publicity can acknowledge the guests. I wrote a proposal yesterday for a solution - to have nations representing us come to an agreement at an OIDFA meeting. We are an educated population, and should be able to work this out if everyone bends a little. Do all (or most) nations have Father's Day on the 3rd Sunday in June? If so, let us think about how many people it took to come to an agreement! The lacemakers of the world are few in number and quite capable of organizing their lace pillows, even with many bobbins. Surely, we can agree to celebrate together on one day of the year? Please, let's not make this complicated. Choose based on best time of year both north and south of the Equator, so that no one is expected to celebrate in sweltering heat or ice storms, and travel to an event is likely to be easiest. Many special occasions share the same day of the year, so that should not be a concern. Re: [lace] International Lace Day-purpose of question
Dear Devon, There is a large file of information about St. Catherine's Day in Arachne archives. It is also explained in several books written by British lace history experts, and in Cattern Cakes and Lace, the cook book written by Julia Jones and Barbara Deer that is illustrated so beautifully with lace and lace-making equipment. You can find info about the book in the archives, by title. In 2012, it fell on Thanksgiving Day in America. St. Catherine's Day is always November 25th. It is easily remembered as being one month before Christmas. Each year, when my new appointment calendar is prepared with birthdays of friends and other important dates (_Lace@Arachne's_ (mailto:Lace@Arachne's) anniversary, for example), I put this date in it. It is not so great a chore, and the calendar is always on the kitchen counter or in my purse/traveling bookcase. ...Well, that is what I call it, because I buy purses with side pockets that will accommodate books, magazines, and note pads on which to jot thoughts that will evolve into memos to _Lace@Arachne_ (mailto:Lace@Arachne) . Doesn't everyone? Jeri --- In a message dated 6/16/2015 9:13:42 A.M. I hate to throw a wet blanket on this, because I love nothing more than lacing in public. But 21 June is Father's Day in the U.S., and the two celebrations just do not mesh well! [lace] International lace day at Olot
The Catalonian Association of Lacemakers held their annual Lace Day in the town of Olot on June 8, 2014. Over 5,000 people attended. They had room for 3,000 lacemakers, I'm not sure exactly how many signed up. They set a Guinness World Record for the longest bobbinlace ever made, 969 meters long, 6 cm wide, which was worked on beforehand by over 1,800 lacemakers. Not sure how it was all put together. I have the detailed meeting announcement on LaceNews at http://tinyurl.com/mj9d6pk. Yes Miss!! Like Agnes I'd not heard of it before but as she says we'll be finishing the sampler we started in May! We got most of it done on a 2 day course and it's taken us this long to do the rest! Looking forward to finishing it though, because i've got a hole in the pillow and want to take the cover off and see if it's worth repairing I do have a replacement for it though! (So that if it's not repairable I've not lost a pillow, so I can play with it and see what I can do!!) And it's sunny here today, but the forecast for the weekend is. wet!! Re: [lace] International Lace Day
Hi Spiders All, I know nothing about an International Lace Day but, The Lace Guild (in the UK) inaugurated, several years ago, and probably more than I want to think about, a 'National Lace Day' in September, where we in the UK - and presumably anyone else on the planet who wanted to join in! - made lace in public, and sometimes in quite unexpected places. It was - and is still, I think - very popular, and did publicise lace, but although I did and still do my bit, and make lace in some very public places, there was a lot of interest, with yards of the beginners' snake being made, but not many actually came forward to join a class! I shall never heard of an International Lace Day. We in Catalonia (Spain)lacemakers celebrate 21nth. October the Day of Santa Ursula. Catholic Ursuline nuns are related with laces. Their convents and schools sprang from France to different European countries and they brought with them early laces everywhere they went.
