Yes, Jenny, I think it would be a very informative tool for our inventories!
My daughters have asked me to do an inventory of my lace 'stuff' so they will
know how to dispose of it at a later date.
I am using the scanner and photos to do it. Now I need to get my books
inventoried.
Just a reminder this is also a good thing to do for insurance reasons, for
this you also need the year you purchased the item.
And hope we never need it for that purpose.

2010-10-01 Thread Tatman
I am sure the makers of most of my bobbins have been mentioned. I don't
have them cataloged or ID to know who made what bobbin, unfortunately, shame
on me. But I do have a few bobbins made by a friend of mine who does the
same heritage reenactments we do. He is an excellent wood carver and wanted
to try turning some bobbins. So I gave him a pattern shape to go by and he
did just fine. His work isn't well finished as some of the expert makers,
but his bobbins are quite usable(and I have used them). A bit on the clunky
sidewe will call them thumpers. One of my precious bobbins he gave me
was a George Washington bobbin(as he calls it). That is, it is off a fallen
limb of one of the historical trees from the Mt. Vernon property(or might be
from Washington's boyhood home, can't remember him telling me). It is a
tiny bobbin(still chunky though!) and the wood is yellowish in color(sugar
maple???) I can't completely authenticate this. It is just what he has told
me. He has made a couple of these.

My wood carving friend also was a dear friend of my bobbin lace teacher who
did the same reenactments. She told him that his bobbins weren't quite up
to snuff and that he needs to keep trying to finish them better. Threads
might snag on them. They constantly would nudge each other with wry
comments. What are friends for?! Of course her husband made all her bobbins
and they were exquisitely made and tailored just for her. She was spoiled
by her husband's bobbins. I happen to be lucky to own two pair that she let
me have. Great for doing tallies and sewings.

The bobbins my friend makes will be bobbins that I always will know who made
them because they are uniquely his work and he is a friend of mine and will
be a momento from him.

2010-10-01 Thread Louise Bailey
Dear Arachnes,

I am enjoying this thread, and think I have now have a good Autumn project to
catalogue my bobbins now the wet weather is setting in!

I'm not sure I have seen mention of another Cambridgeshire Bobbin Maker, my
closest: Margaret & David Davies, in March: nice delicate bobbins in wood with
a very distinctive deep grooved neck and almost hour glass tail. David is often
to be seen at lace fairs demonstrating turning. They have a website.
http://www.mdlacebobbins.co.uk/

Also Brian Goodwin, still very active as far as I know.
http://www.briangoodwin.co.uk/index.html

Stephen & Hilary Pearce have retired, but made wonderful ornate carved bobbins.

There is another painter of bobbins that used to come to Herts lace days - very
art deco / nouveau designs, the name I can never remember, but much enjoy.

I have a couple of lovely painted bobbins, again bought many years ago at a
Herts lace day, floral on bone with the initials MT - any ideas? One is an
Acorn bobbin, the other is an old Cockermouth one.

I also have some painted wood and also unusual Corian bobbins from a supplier
based near Beaconsfield, Bucks which my mother gave me; she found them in the
phone book and went to visit. Well over a decade ago. I thought they might
have been Woburn Bobbins but am not sure, anyone recognise the description?
Quite chunky so good for gimps and Russian Lace.

Regards

Louise

On another soggy windy day in Cambridge.

Aluminium bobbins were made by Jim Tregellas in South Australia, Helen - I
just love mine, especially in summer!.

A fairly new maker in Oz is Gerry Giesaitis in Corrimal, who makes a lovely
line of laminated wood bobbins in all sorts of lovely colours, as well as
beautifully turned plain wood bobbins.

My DH no longer makes bobbins for sale, Helen, but he still makes the
occasional one for me - he is experimenting with acrylic pen blanks, and
made me some lovely bobbins with square bodies to them.

My favourite Oz bobbin maker is Neil Keats - Arachnid Tamara put me on to
his "T-squares".

Oh yeah - I forgot about my aluminium bobbin and the 2 gold coloured metal
ones and a brass one. Forgot who made those. Thanks for the reminder about
them Lauren.

There's also someone - in Oz I think - who also (or used to) make bobbins in
Corian. I don't have one of those, but I do have a variety that are made by
someone around the Canberra area that did brass tipped rosewood (I think
it's rosewood). I adore that bobbin - the brass milling is so smooth
and the balance and weight of the bobbin is great.

And thanks David for popping up to answer my question about the Sovereign
Hill bobbin maker. I figured you know who I meant :-) (and I just found I
have one of your cousin's bobbins in huon pine - I think it was one that Mum
bought and gave me for birthday or Christmas one year).

Re pics of the bobbins: I know the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney has been (or
was) working on a project to ID Australian bobbin makers, and I know I sent
photos of some of my bobbins made by Australians to them. Not sure if their
db has or will be made available to the public, but it was fun to contribute
photos and whatever info I could to them for their research and list.

Gotta get back to my chores now - I've spent way too much time on this fun
thread that's brought up good memories of the days when I could buy bobbins
without much care :-)

Cheers,
Helen, in foggy Duvall, WA

Dear Helen,

David Collyer might know or remember - seems like there was (still is?) a
bloke who turned tulipwood bobbins at Sovereign Hill. I remember going
there on a school trip and buying a bobbin there that had been turned by a
man in the woodworking 'shop' (he had a lathe obviously), and they were sold
I think in the general store.

Yes, that was Graham JOHNSON. I own his very first pair which I love;
just pine wood but lovely barleycorn turning which he never did on
bobbins again. Graham gave me that pair long before I owned any others.

Sadly Graham developed dementia of rapid onset and died about 4 years
ago. It was only last Sunday that I was judging a Senior Star Search
with his wife Laurel who remains a dear friend.

I can add a bunch of Australian bobbin makers - they may not have sold
internationally, but they did sell in Oz. this list is far from exhaustive
- and I'm drawing a blank on the name of the bobbin maker in Victoria who
did wrapped bobbins (I know there will be a Aussie who'll remember them from
the late 80's - maybe she was from up the Mallee/Swan Hill lacemakers way?)
and someone down there also turned horn I think. I have 2 horn bobbins, and
I know I bought one in Australia from a guy in Canberra I think, in about
1989.

There's also April ? in WA who paints bobbins (like the nutcrackers)

I think it's Peter Eurell.

Eric Stevenson made lovely bobbins including teensy weensy little ones for
dolls (I am the proud owner of one of Freda's lacemaker dolls - Emily sits
in my little china cabinet by my front door and has a lovely view of the
Snoqualmie Valley as she gazes up from her work :-) ).

Margaret Wall paints bobbins I know in the US, but I don't know if she turns
them herself.

There are also lots of other people that turn bobbins for themselves or for
friends. I have several from a couple of friends who were in a woodwork
club who turned a couple of bobbins and game them to me as gifts, and along
with a nice bone one that was given to me by one of Mum's original lace
class friends.

Cheers,
Helen, Duvall, WA (formerly of Melbourne, Australia and Denver Colorado)

Leon Young (now retired I believe) wood and bone (and I have lots of Leon's
wonderful bobbins in Australian and international woods)
Janet Soo (retired too I think) started with pyrogrpahy on bobbins and then
started turning her own in wood and also did some chopstick ones I think
John Pollard (retired I think) wood and maybe some bone?
Max Meier - wonderful wood laminates and crushed velvet
John Atkinson (sadly deceased) wood and laminated wood
Toby Neve (sadly deceased) wood and bone
Britt Fairchild - painted bobbins (not sure if she turns her own)
John Doyle (retired?) - blown glass bobbins
Bill Lafferty - wood (and Noelene will know what else :-) )
Brian Davies - (retired?) wood - maybe he did other materials too?

Hi Alice!

I recently discovered a web site for Sarah Jones bobbins. She paints

When we lived in England, we often saw her at Lace Days with Heather Ann

My husband surprised me and ordered a set of honiton bobbins from them

Her orchids are wonderful, and the ones she makes with Names and their

The web site is somewhat new and it appears she is using Stuart Johnson
