Ebay reserves now have to be GBP50 or more, so it's pointless bidding less. If the Skovgaard book is only available to the UK, it usually sells for between GBP20 and GBP35 - I've seen it as low as GBP12. As soon as it's offered worldwide, then the bids rockets, and if you click on the number beside the winning bidder's ID, you usually find it's been sold to the US. That's probably why the current seller (item number 8384196425) is confident he/she'll get in excess of GBP50. If you have friend in the UK, write to a seller who will only ship to the UK (usually because they won't accept payment in currencies other than sterling) and ask if your friend can pay the seller in sterling for you if you win, but post the book it to you. Then reimburse your friend somehow - easy of they have a Paypal account. Needs to be a friend in case there are problems like it going missing in the post. Or get a friend to bid and pay for the book and then sell it to you for the same price as paid plus postages. Re: [lace] Tonder book
Another possibility with ebay. I'm in the US and have occasionally been alerted to an ebay item that says in the listing the UK seller will ship only to the UK. Assuming there's time, I have written to the seller and asked if they would be willing to ship to the US (and if so, what the shipping cost would be). Paypal is an easy way for a US buyer to pay the seller in GBP. There are other ways, too, though--there are international money orders, wire transfers, etc. There are, of course, fees attached to these methods, but it is do-able. In my case, every UK seller I've written to has said, sure, I'll ship to the US. I don't know why they limit themselves, when, as Alice wrote, the selling price goes way up when they open their sale to the rest of the world. [lace] Tonder book summary
Greetings again, I thought I should write a followup of my Tonder book problem. First, a kind list member who had an extra book is selling it to me, so I will soon have one. If a person can't buy a book, suggestions came in for borrowing one from a person's local guild, their national guild, or the local library interlibrary loan. If time is not urgent, a request can be filed with the various book sellers on line, such as Amazon, Abebooks, Alibris, etc. When a book becomes available, you would be notified. If the price is reasonable, you can buy it. If not, keep your request open. Also, a person can check on eBay weekly to see if a new offer has come up. Purchases are made in a reasonable price range periodically. So, thank you for all the comments, suggestions and offers. I shall be ready for my Tonder class when the time comes. [lace] Tonder book
Greetings all, I've been shopping for a Tonder book since I wish to take a class in the subject. Amazon has 'Technique of Tonder Lace' for $451.00. The seller claims that it's the going price for the demand on this book. () I asked because I thought the price was a typing error. One just sold on eBay for $72, and another book company has one at $197.00 -- which is still a lot. If anyone has this book, and wants to sell it, there's a market for it. If anyone knows a dealer who has one, I'd like to know. I'd like one, but my pocket snake protests at extreme prices. Or ... if anyone has a recommendation of a similar book, in English, I'd be interested in that, also. Hopefully, Alice in Oregon -- with weather back to usual after a cold spell - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [lace] Tonder book/abebooks
I've ordered through Abebooks several times. The only problem I've had is that once or twice after I've placed my order, I got an email back saying, Sorry, the book is no longer available. Almost all of the books I've ordered were from overseas, and no problems with credit card payments or delivery times. Barbara Joyce Snoqualmie, WA USA Think I did it again and sent to chat instead of lace. So here it is again: I've used Abebooks a lot to track down books, but I've never used their services to obtain a book I was interested in. I've always contacted the bookseller direct, either by phone or by email, and dealt with them. Some accept credit/debit cards, other want a cheque. In 20 plus purchases, I've never had a problem doing it this way, even purchasing from overseas. The only problem I've had is that once or twice after I've placed my order, I got an email back saying, Sorry, the book is no longer available. Hi All -- I've had success dealing with ABE before, too -- but the thing I found out is that the honest and successful handling of any book order through AbeBooks or AddAll is totally dependent on the actual ultimate bookseller. These are not book companies, but only web-listing services. I also discovered, after the fact, that ABE does not have any phone numbers listed on its contact page (although a bookseller gave me a phone number) and its headquarters are located in Canada. I don't know what kind of recourse someone would have, if they miss ABE's 30-day cancellation policy, dealing with international law, etc. After talking with a bookseller about this, I found out ABE and AddAll do not require any kind of assurances from the booksellers they list, or conduct any kind of quality checking. As she said, real booksellers are very upset about it, because these web services will post listing for anyone or his dog, if they are willing to pay the listing fee. As I discovered, IF there is a problem, AddAll is NOT a real company at all, and there is NO assistance from them. ABEBooks is a little better, but not much. I went through three cycles of complaints, at all three levels (AddAll, ABEBooks and the third seller in NM). Nothing was really resolved until I was forced to cancel the credit card charge. After that, the bookseller lied, telling ABEBooks that s/he had tried to contact me numerous times, which was totally false, and I could prove it. Midway through my ordeal, which lasted 3 months, I asked my ex-FIL who lives in NM to try calling that third bookseller for me. He found out there is no listing for them in the phone book, and they also did not respond to his voice mail messages, as they had not to mine, also. Apparently, this is not a real bookseller, but someone who orders books from someone else when s/he feels like getting around to filling an order. This is a real risk for people dealing with companies listed on ABE or AddAll -- tge bookseller may or may not be a real bookseller, at all. That's why people are better off contacting the listed bookseller directly, and make sure there is actually someone there, who will respond to your order in an honest fashion. It depended on how many responses to her inquiry she received. You will recall that she wrote to Arachne this week that her computer was malfunctioning, and that she had many digests backed up - to be read. I have a feeling she will eventually get to your inquiry, and we will all receive a status report after she checks on the status from Batsford.
