[lace] List of lace making towns/villages in East Midlands???

2019-08-06 Thread brido11
I thought it would be easy to get a list of the above places where lace
makers were active, say in 1850? (+ or -) But so far I have failed.

I can get a couple of lists dated 1700 but that is too early for my
purposes.

I want to create a map (I learned how this afternoon!!) of these places as I
am a visual person.

Does anyone have a list they would care to share with me (and eventually all
of you!)

Fingers crossed and much advanced thanks

Sorry I keep asking for help!!

Brian

2018-11-02 Thread Sue
I enjoyed reading both of these, different but lovely:) I am stunned that I
completed all my Christmas pieces from a very later start for me and by the
end of October. I am going to make a spare one, just in case I want to give
a small gift to someone else in the near future and it can sit in my box. I
have also decided to make another piece, this one with some beads on if I
have enough to do it right now to while away my evenings over the next week.
I am waiting for some gold thread my husband suggested something to go round
our 2 led candles, so will see if I can pull something off in the next few
weeks.
My latest poppy is now ready to go on my clothing. Someone told me to put
gold in the centre which I did but during the year I removed that one for my
memorial flowers and have now replaced it with the conventional black centre
and I have to say it looks absolutely right now.
Janice, if I can get a decent photo of my memorial flowers I will send you a
pic, many of the petals were done using your pattern (thank you so much for
that). I now have them sitting in a glass vessel with a top on to keep the
bugs at bay. I love it and can see it every day.
Happy Birthday Beth. I do see Herons around the various water ways local,
though not often we seem to be feeding approx 40 Goldfinches daily with the
feeders we put up in March when we had some nasty weather. Started off
seeing 5 so the word has got round, lol, they keep me entertained while I am
washing dishes.

It's my birthday today and I received a lovely surprise present from two
(non-lacemaking) friends: a copy of Santina Levy's Lace - A History,
beautifully presented in a card slipcase. The parcel arrived a couple of
days ago and I've been wondering whatever could be in such a heavy box.
I remember coveting this book when it first came out, but couldn't
afford it then, it's so nice to have been given it for a special birthday.

Is everyone else busy making lace? Or just busy?

[lace] List quiet?

2018-10-31 Thread Janice Blair
It is 6 days since I received a digest.  Is everyone busy making lace?  I
have been making lace ornaments for my knitting group for a Christmas gift.
Six done, 6 more to go.  My Arachne exchanges are ready, just need to work
out how I am going to mount them this year.
Saturday we have a craft fair and my knitting group are having a stall.  I
have at least a dozen pairs of bobbin lace and tatted earrings to sell.  The
money goes into our kitty for purchasing new yarn for the items we make for
seven local charities, and the occasional birthday cake.
I received my Lace 172 magazine this week and there are lots of articles and
patterns for poppies.  I was delighted to see a photo of a poppy from our
Susan Hottle of a poppy she adapted from the beginner pattern on my website.
Still time to make one for Remembrance Day.

[lace] List is quiet

2016-10-14 Thread Susan Vossier
I too have been busy clearing my pillows for a week's course of Cantu next
week, after going to Le Puy for their annual couvige. You can see some
photos here: https://goo.gl/photos/sAaZnvYsF8nEE96x6

Both Marie-Thérèse Bonniol and Denise Etienne wer there with their
salt-crystal lace; Denise's seemed to me less brilliant than when I first
saw it eight years ago; she says the problem is the dust. Marie-Thérèse
Bonniol had two pieces I haven't seen before, but hers are under glass. I
asked if they altered with time; she said that the originals, done in 2001
hadn't budged at all, the only time she had some trouble was when she took
them to an exhibition in the north of France, they weren't framed, and the
weather was wet (as it often is in the north of France). She had to remove
them to a drier place before the salt dissolved..; Apparently she hasn't
done any "salty' lace for several years.

Missed Florence Quinette - but I see she was in Australia! Lots of lovely
lace to see, and although there seem to be fewer and fewer vendors - I miss
Bart and Francis who have some beautiful unusual threads - there was plenty
to tempt. Why is it that however many different sizes, colours types of
thread you have, you never have the right one for the next thing you want
to make?

This piece was created during my studies without purpose.
In 2006 it received an update with Scoubidou bands and a plant stake for

The weather was working on material. The plastic has become brittle.
It was time for a makeover.
Now I painted the bobbin lace with nail polish, to creat new areas.

Hello
I have been busy all this week helping to run the Australian Lace Guild
annual Conference in Melbourne Australia.

We have 90 people attending in total.
There are five classes : Florence Quinette from France teaching Bayeaux
Lace

Pat Milne - Torchon
Annette Lally - Honiton
Vickie Taylor - Lace jewellery
Margaret Stephens - Needle lace (
amaelia ars from her just released book ) ((sorry about the spelling!!))

There is also an evening program of lectures and a tutors showcase.
On Wednesday there was an excursion to a historic cottage and to the
Embroiderers Guild to view their lace collection and see their current
exhibition.
Altogether a wonderful week of learning and catching up with lacemakers from
around Australia.

Next years Conference will be in Launceston Tasmania.
Check out the ALG Website later in the year for more details.

[lace] List is quiet - been busy

2016-10-13 Thread lacel...@frontier.com
I wondered about everyone but I was busy myself. So far this month I've
attended two regular lace meetings and our annual Lace Day, taught a short
bobbin lace class in Tillamook, and am trying to get my things ready for a
3-day Bucks class starting tomorrow. The teacher threw in an extra chore of
drawing a diagram of the pattern I'm using in the class. (There's no diagram
or picture with this particular pattern.)

In addition, I've put away all the patio furniture and garden decorative items
before the strong winter storm that's hitting later today. And I'm chairman of
a sale at church in another week. I've been finishing my projects for that
sale.

I've never drawn a Bucks diagram before -- only Torchon. It's been a
challenge. There must be some basic rules/methods that I'm not aware of. I
enlarged the pattern 250 percent and have been making a lot of use of my
eraser. I can see why some diagrams are 500+ percent larger than the actual
pattern.

Now I need to run some errands while it's raining gently before the main storm
comes in. Rain is forecast for the foreseen future with an even stronger storm
(remains of a typhoon) hitting Saturday. Lovely weather to drive 30 miles each
way each day to the lace class. I'm really glad Lace Day was last week when we
had a nice day.

2013-03-30 Thread J D Hammett

Hi Agnes and fellow Arachnids,

A couple of things when demonstrating at this time of the year. Wear layers
and plenty of them. You can peel off what is not needed during the day and
put them on again towards the end of the day as it gets colder again.
Secondly, find a large box and flatten it to put under your feet (this is an
old market traders' trick to help keep the feet warmer). It can be discarded
at the end of the show. If you have a pair of fingerless gloves (leather or
cotton as wool sheds too much) wear them. It may be a little awkward at
first to make lace with them on, but you get used to them quite quickly.

Hope that helps.

Enjoy the Easter holidays and happy lace making.

Re: [lace] List

Hi Joepie et all
I did all that apart from the cardboard (which I do take at winter fairs),
as we were inside.
Problem is the building is very lightweight with a lot of glass - great
when the sun shines in (actually gets too hot), no good on a cloudy day.
Anyway, got a little lace done and some lucet cords, and got lots of people
to watch and ask questions.
One young woman asked if I knew a local teacher. She used to make lace
before she got married (learned from her mother).

Now with her daughter being a teenager, she wants to get back into it.
I gave her my contact details and said I'd ask my teacher.
So, if anyone knows of a lace teacher in North Lincolnshire (around Barton
area), get in touch with me, please.

did`nt think nastyness and bitching was also not to be allowed on the list.
I`m sticking my oar in now. Ruth is absolutely bone tired with caring for her

So before anyone else gets fired up. Just put yourselves in her position for a

[lace] lace list secret pals round

2007-05-29 Thread bevw
HI all

For those waiting to hear of the next secret pals round, this would be it.
I'm sorry I have not been able to organize the 'next' one until now (life
can be so interfering!). I'll do what I can.

If you would like to take part, send me an e-mail. I will reply with the
details.
This time I will ask you if you want to go for 6 exchanges, or just try 3
this time.
If we go 6, this round will end in December. If 3, it will end in September.

Part of the reason I have waited to start the next one is the length of time
it took to complete all the exchanges, and one or two faltered in the end.
Then I thought having just 3 might be worth a try, so as not to overload
personal schedules (travel etc.), and in light of increasing postage for
parcels going air mail (or even within a country!).
Let me know what you think.

For those new to the idea, 'secret pals' is an exchange of prezzie-type
parcels, one a month for 6 months ( or 3 if we go for a shorter round).
You know who you are sending to, the sender is supposed to be secret to the
recipient (if found out, it isn't a tragedy though).
The exchange is set up so that A sends to B sends to C sends to A.
An example of what to send - a bobbin or two, some thread, souvenirs from
where you live; items of interest to your particular pal.
When you reply to a 'form' I send you, you tell me (the coordinator) a few
details about yourself, lace preferences, other hobbies etc. which I share
with your sending pal.

Not to be entered into lightly, yhe idea might sound like great fun - and it
is - but you must be able to gather items, package them and send on time -
at the beginning of each exchange month.
Consider carefully your own situation about costs, getting to the post
office, finding time to assemble the parcel etc., before agreeing to take
part.

Hi Janice -

Yes, the list has been very quiet lately, and I was beginning to
think that my ISP was filtering my mail a tad too much! It's good
to know that others have the same perception.

Here's a question that might generate some interesting posts: Are
there any exciting new lace books out these days? It seems to me
that there aren't as many as usual.

Is the list very quiet at the moment? I have not had a digest since Friday.
Maybe this email will kick one out.

Lace content: I am still working on my
competition piece and today I wrote out the instructions for a simple fish
bookmark that we can use this month at our LACE guild meeting. We have sent
out invites for beginners and to date we have two signed up.

Hi everyone and Janice (so she can get mail) and Clay, who wrote:

I have just finished the staff reviews for our Canadian lace magazine - the
Color in Torchon dvd 'publication' is super; Alex Stillwell's new book on
Buckspoint was of immense interest. The latter has enough nice little
projects to keep a lace person (who likes point ground) occupied for quite a
while. Also for those who like point ground, Elwyn Kenn in Australia has a
new one with butterfly and floral designs.

The latter two are self-published, and the video is from Hensel Productions.

That's all I'm going to say about them until our magazine itself is
published (some time 'soon') - others might like to wade in with opinions.

Yes, the subscription process is automated.

The directions are -
To (un)subscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line:
(un)subscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You don't need to put anything in the subject line, and you should not
have anything else but the following line in the body of the message:

subscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[delete anything such as a signature that would appear below - the
auto-bot is looking for the complete command, no more, no less]

Make sure your friend has spelled the majordomo address correctly. I
recently unsubbed, and subbed again - but misspelled 'majordomo' at
first (d-oh!).

There is an alternative to deleting everything under
the message. You can put the word -end- on
the next line and majordomo will stop there and not
see anything after it. I do that, then don't have to
worry about my computer adding anything at the bottom.

[lace] Lace List is Quiet

Woody - you have Lots of knowledge to impart. Don't be so
modest!!! :)) :))
And there must be others in Tasmania also on the List that we have not heard
from.

Tell us what is going on in Tasmania. You people are always saying that you
are the forgotten folks - well, now is your chance to beat your own
drum :))

For those not good at geography - Tasmania is the little heart-shaped island
at the bottom of Australia. It has areas of great beauty, awesome ancient
forests, - and a lot of very good lacemakers!
Lets hear from some of them!

2004-11-16 Thread Ruth Budge
I must say, I'm always surprised when I meet lacemakers from other parts of
Australia, to find out how many are members of Arachne, but who never
contribute anything!

At the last conference of the Australian Lace Guild, I was asked by the
Secretary of the Guild to chair a meeting of Arachne members one evening. I
was very surprised to see how many people were there, and how reluctant members
were to write a short report of our conference for all you unfortunate people
who couldn't be there!

One lady commented: I've never posted on Arachne, and I'm not going to start
now!!

Eventually, as you will remember, I did get a couple of brave souls who agreed
to write a small report, and if I remember correctly, there *were* interested
comments back from those of you living outside Australia.

[lace] Martina is back to the lace list

2004-10-28 Thread Eberhard De Wille
Hello everybody,

due to never ending computer problems and very little time, I had to
unsubscribe from this list several months ago. Now the computer problems are
solved, hopefully, and the spare time - we will see. *gg*

Let me give you an intro of myself. I am German, living in the South-East of
Germany, married, 7 children (25 - 6yrs.), 3 of them still living at home,
the other distributed over Germany and Spain at present.

I am in the middle of doing a parttime training course of housekeeping or
domestic science. It will finish with an exam in June 2005. To keep up my
English I applied to be a kind of teacher or lecturer in a public adult
education centre (VHS). They accepted me again (after a break of many years)
and I started teaching in Sept. 2003. Of course I have to fit my DH,
schoolkids and the grown-up daughters into my schedule as well as my
hobbies.
I like to do bobbin lace, patchwork, sewing clothes, cross stitching, BW,
reading books, mailing. ** As you may guess I have to rotate my hobbies
somewhat.

In the past I have enjoyed to take part in the Secret Sister rounds and the
Christmas Card exchanges. Is the Christmas Card exchange already on the go
for this season?

Looking foreward to be with you again,

Best regards from Martina

Dear Avital,
That reminds me of something else I wanted to say. It seems to me that
August, December, and February are big flame months. In August people are
hot and short-tempered, in December they're anxious about the holidays, and
in February they're in the winter doldrums. The short days really do affect
people's moods. One of the reasons I've never returned to Canada is the
winters--I used to get depressed for months on end.
Now you'll know why those of us in NZ, AUS and RSA get our moods and flames
all round the wrong way :)
Of course in August we are freezing; sure we have holidays in December but
the fabulous weather makes them no big deal; and in February summer is at
it's hottest peak.

I think it's the weather. Maybe even lack of sunlight. I was recently
privately flamed for something that was just a musing on an

[lace] List Behaviour

Last year I was unlucky enough to work for someone who communicated by
email and had a really brusque style. I noticed that my brain actually
supplied a tone of voice to go with the message! I heard her speaking
to me, but since my own brain supplied the tone it changed with my mood.

If she sent the letter is in the file one day I might hear that in a
calm, reasonable tone, and another day I might hear an angry the
**letter** is in the **file** (you !#(@$*( fool you...) And of
course I'd get angry because not only was she mean to me, but in fact
the letter was *not* in the file, which is why I had emailed her in the
first place. I must admit, though, that I never allowed my irritation
to make me be rude in return.

So I guess the reason for all this rambling is a recommendation that
you should just wait a day or so before you send that flame! And,
re-read the original message before you compose your angry post,
because you might just have been listening to your own voice rather
than the poster's voice.

By the way, I have a feature on my e-mail that allows me to send
messages automatically to another mailbox. If someone's posts really
irritate you, you can just set up your email to send that person's
posts to Trash before you see them. Then you won't have to deprive
yourself of the entire list just to avoid the person who is your pet
peeve.

[lace] List courtesies

2003-11-24 Thread alice howell
It's me again -- with a reminder. We have some new people on our list, so
I wanted to remind everyone of a couple list courtesies.

Please put your name and email at the end of your messages. Some email
programs cut off the top of the header so the sender's address cannot be
seen. In case a reader wishes to reply to a message, the name and email
would be nice to have.

The other item is regarding the raffles and give-aways we periodically have.
Please send your raffle entry notice directly to the person listed, not to
the list. While the raffle item might be lace-related, the entry applications
are not. We do, however, want to hear who won!

Happy lacing,
