[lace] scarf pattern

2008-08-27 Thread Janice Blair
I purchased a pattern for a scarf designed by Christine Mirecki entitled Schal
Sabrina.  I think it is written in German and I can work out the color scheme
and I know that LP means the worker pair but I don't know what Obere
Schalkante - Anfang means or Der Schal wird mit drei verschiedenen Farben
gekloppelt.

The pattern looks like it can be made in three parts as there is what appears
to be a dotted line down the pattern between each part.  The pattern is
marked  anhakeln at the end of that line.  Am I correct?

Over each part it states the number of pairs used.  What does Streifen mean?

Also the thread calls for Yaspe shantung 100% siede, silk, soie Nm 30/2 Nel
50/2
I don't see it in Brenda's book but I think it could be 18 wraps.  Am I
correct?

It is basically a Torchon pattern but not a straight design.  As there are
definite workers, and no half stitch involved, just cloth and spiders, how can
I assess how much to put on the passives?  Normally I say 3 times the length
but I think that might be too much.  Would I be okay with 1 1/2 times the
proposed scarf length?

Hi Janice and everyone

Brenda will confirm this I'm sure - I have Yaspé silk, and have seen it in

brand.

2008-08-27 Thread Janice Blair
Thank you for the quick replies. The translations came out similar to what I
was thinking it meant.  As I thought, the scarf can be made in 3 pieces which
eliminates having to have a pillow about 11 inches wide.  It might be nice to
work it all together if I can rig up a roller pillow wide enough, then I will
see the full effect of the color changes.

I do have a silk thread I picked up in England that I was thinking of using.
It does have a slub to it but it might be worth trying.  It is a Texere Yarn
called Floral Silks and the group I bought was a Blended Silk Selection called
Moor & Loch, a blend of silk wool and cotton.  I have 5 spools left with 250
meters on a spool.  Wonder if that will be enough, will have to do some math
before I start, not my strong point.

Yaspe (Jaspe) silk from Bart & Francis is in Addendum3 and Edition 4,
page 45.

I measured it as 20 w/cm, but it's a slub thread so difficult to get an
accurate measurement.
I have just finished (bank holiday weekend) a torchon edging made with
Filato per Tombolo di Cantu 30 with Yaspe 30/2 for the workers. Not
conventional to mix cotton and silk but I wanted to see how the Yaspe
worked up. The mat's to big to get it all onto the scanner so I'll
need to mess about with the camera to get a proper pic for the website
gallery, but I've added a scan of 1/4 of it to:

I have met Christine Mirecki several times, and translated one or two
pattern leaflets for her. She would definitely make all her scarf patterns
on a wide block pillow. Doing all three colours at once means needing a lot
of space and having a lot of bobbins around, but at any time usually only
one colour is being worked so the other colours can be bundled out of the
way. A few extra bobbins are needed in work every time you get to a join.

There is an important factor to consider if you do the scarf in separate
sections, joining as you go. When you unpin the worked section of the scarf
it will pull in from the pricking size. You are going to have to restretch
the first section to repin it down for joining the second section, and then
the same again for joining the third section to the second. The type of
silk I have seen used in Germany for these scarves seems to pull in a lot,
so this could be a real difficulty to overcome.

May be I mentioned earlier: whenever you work with silk, make the lace
wet and let it dry before you pull out the pins. It will pull in much
lesser and hold the shape better.

[lace] thread inventory & lace scarf pattern

2011-11-03 Thread hottleco
Hello All! As a card carrying member of ANG (American Needlepoint Guild), I
wanted to share a little item I found on that group's Yahoo list--thread
inventory apps for hand-held devices. While I don't claim to be organized to
this extent--LOL!!!--I can see where this could be handy. The gal at
www.lkreinmiller.com has created Xcel spreadsheets for Anchor, DMC, Dinky Dyes,
Silk n Ivory, Vineyard, Caron, Soie d'Alger, Rainbow Gallery & Kreinik threads.
They are available for free download on her site & can be synced with
hand-helds. Many of these threads are too heavy for us (other than gimps), but
the point is--is there a lacemaker who would do the same for "our" threads?
Whenever I'm at a workshop & threads are available for purchase, they call my
name. So sweetly in fact, that I've purchased the same threads on several
occasions! If I could launch myself into the 21st century, I could have my
thread inventory at my fingertips. Since I'm not a techie, I'm throwing t!
his out for general discussion. As to the lace scarf, I'm intrigued but it's
Greek to me! What is stockings stitch? And I don't understand what to do at
the end of the 1st Row, nor the section where the crocheted stitch is slipped
over the 1st stitch on the needle. Would David or another expert please advise
so that I may mark my copy that I've printed? Perhaps there is a picture that
could be uploaded to webshots showing the finished item? It sounds like there
are strips that are semi free-floating? Many thanks. Sincerely, Susan Hottle,
Erie, PA USA recently returned from a needlepoint event at Legacy Village
(Beachwood, OH)

Re: [lace] thread inventory & lace scarf pattern

2011-11-03 Thread bev walker
Hello Susan and everyone
Scarf pattern:
For the first row you can either do P 1, P2 tog. across or K 1, K2
tog. across and that row is repeated for every row of the lace part.
Stocking(s) stitch is stockinette stitch, written st st usually - over
two rows, knit 1 row, purl 1 row.

The crochet is just to bring your thread back to the bottom of the
most recently made strip so that you can start the next one. You don't
do this for the last strip because you will be picking up all the
stitches set aside on safety pins to continue the scarf. There is a
second set of strips that are woven through the first set before
resuming the st st rows and lace.

If this really is foreign to you, and you would still like to try it,
I suggest following the instructions using garter stitch (knit every
row). The garter stitch on large needles will give a lace-like effect,
and the smaller size needles will condense the work as needed.

A tip to try if there isn't a picture, read through the instructions
carefully, sketching each section as if you have just finished
knitting it to get the general idea of what it looks like ;)

Bev, P1, P2tog (or K1, K2tog) across the row will decrease the number of
stitches by 1/3 every time you do it. There is no increase to balance each
P2tog (or K2tog). If you do this for 30 cm. (12 in.) you will have decreased
down to nothing!

There's also no yo to make lace holes. I don't understand why you suggest
doing this. Am I missing something?

Yes ;)
I was replying to Susan's message, per her question, what the
instructions at the end of row 1 meant (there is some stuff in
brackets). From her reply to me, it seems she sorted it out :)

To keep track: The stitch count is 20. There are 9 of YO per row, 9 of
2 tog., and 1 stitch at each end worked plain.

I had to grab the nearest available yarn and have a go. The scarf is
working up nicely and lacy - I'm using 2/10 acrylic weaving yarn.
