[lace-chat] right brainer!

2007-10-12 Thread Agnes Boddington
I came out as a right brainer, though I managed to make her dance
anti-clockwise by circlein my finger in that direction over her - did
not know I had the power to make people do things!

I have not a clue how you make the figure look as if it is going
anti-clockwise. I am the most right-handed of people, and should therefore
be left-brained! Logic was my specialty in gaining my MA in mathematics, and
I am VERY detail oriented. I don't think I fit this page very well

2007-10-12 Thread Carol Melton
Well that was just downright weird! It kept changing as I would look
at it. Thanks for sharing the link. I am going to forward it to my
artsy friends. In other right/left brain tests I score around 70 -
75 % right brained. My husband on the other hand, scores 98% left
brained. When I get him into one of my art projects it is amazing
what he does with his 2% though.

By the way, being left or right handed has nothing to do with
whether you are predominately left or right brained. There are many
many wonderful artists who are right handed but are able to access
the right side of their brain - the right side is the artsy side, the
left side the logical side. If you are interested in the subject,
Betty Edwards has written a couple of books on how to access the
right side of the brain - Drawing On The Right Side of the
Brain ( I and II editions) and Drawing on the Artist Within.

[lace-chat] Left or right brain?male or female brain?

2007-10-12 Thread Jean Nathan

The post I sent this morning seems to have got lost in the ether. Here it is
repeated with typos corrected :-)

BBC1 TV is running a series this week on whether you have a male or female
brain - that doesn't mean you are male or female. The theory behind it is
that the way your brain works depends on the amount of testosterone you were
subjected to as an embryo in the womb at a certain point of development.
They
say that generally men use one side of the brain, but the two sides of the
brain in women can comunicate with each other so they use areas not used by
men.

The results of experiements carried out this week are shown, which so far
uphold the male/female brain regardless of sex theory. There's an online
test as well at:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/theoneshow/article/2007/10/mm_brainsex.shtml

The average performances for people taking the test on a scale of 0-100 each
side of male and female, men have so far come out 50 towards male and women
50 towards female. I came in at 25 towards male, and both my ring fingers
are longer then my index fingers. If the fingers are the same length, that's
counted as female.

Fun to do, but don't take it too seriously. I suspect the online test will
be removed from the web site over the weekend because the programme will go
on to another topic next week.

I thought it strange that the direction would change
when I scrolled down so I could not see her feet.
When I scrolled up, she changed back. After a bit, I
could make her change by focusing on the edge of the
picture instead of directly on her. Our minds apply
the depth to this flat picture, and that's what makes
it appear one direction or the other.

I'm a bit ambidextrous

2007-10-12 Thread Lorri Ferguson
I could only see it going clock wise, but did not agree with their lists.
I found more on the left brain list that fit me.
Maybe I am more like my daughter who as a child did not have a dominate side
in her brain, she is (and always was) definitely left handed. Boy did she
have trouble in school!!

[lace-chat] Card Exchange 2007 - procedure

2007-10-12 Thread Alice Howell
A message went on the List about a Christmas Card
Exchange. There were several immediate replies in the
affirmative, so here is the information for Chat.

I think the end of the year is sneaking up on us much
too fast. Yes, it probably is time to be thinking of
lace Christmas cards.

I'm willing to coordinate this year, if no one else
has a great urge to do so.

Basic rules:
You trade cards with another lacemaker. Your card
must have some handmade lace in or on it. It can be
any kind of lace. The card can be any kind, handmade
or purchased, as long as it has lace somewhere. The
card should be mailed by Dec. 5 so it will arrive well
before Christmas, to be enjoyed.

Each person is allowed to sign up for one, two, or
three exchanges.

Think carefullySign up ONLY if you are willing to
make some lace and send the card. It is extremely
disappointing to send a card and not receive one back.
This happened to one person last year. I hope it
doesn't happen this year.

And when you receive a card, you should email a thank
you to the sender so he/she knows it was received.

Jenny sent the following message:
Last year I hosted the photos on my site at
 www.brandis.com.au/2006/index.html
and am willing to do so again in 2007.

It was great fun to see many of the cards last year,
so there's one more instruction:

Send a picture/scan to Jenny

If interested in participating, send an email to me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Do NOT send to the List.) Two
weeks should be enough to think about itso send in
your name by Oct 25 (but you can start planning and
making lace right away).

Give your name, address, email, and how many exchanges
you wish to do (1, 2 or 3).

Contact me if you have any questions.

Regarding the dancer... I must be really, really, set in my ways; I
couldn't make her spin counter-clockwise, no matter what tricks I
tried. Sober or drunk, it's clockwise, always...

[lace-chat] Useful health-history website

2007-10-12 Thread Martha Krieg
My kids had been after me to make a written family health history,
now that they are adults and their new doctors are wanting all that
information. I kept intending to... but this Sunday the Parade
magazine that comes in the Sunday newspaper had an article on it- and
gave the URL for a My Family Health Portrait by the U. S.
Department of Health and Human Services. Go to
hhs.gov/familyhistory and you can type everything in back to your
grandparents, and then spread out from there. It will create either a
family tree with certain major things flagged, or a spread-sheet-like
chart with everyone's data listed under the diseases you asked it to
track. Pretty nifty.
