[lace-chat] laptop uses

2006-10-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Alice asked - What are some ways to use laptops, which may or may
not be related to lace?
My hubby and I just completed a 5 week trip to various spots in the U.S. We
took lots of photos with the digital camera. Every evening I uploaded all the
photos from that day into the laptop and burned them onto a CD. No way of
losing our precious vacation photos that way. That also cleared the scan disc
[memory card] for the next days picture taking.

[lace-chat] Fw: NELG: Lace workshop...

2006-02-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello Fellow Arachnids,

We at New England Lace Group are holding a lace workshop March 31, April 1 &
2
Located at the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center in Meriden, CT
Jean Leader will be teaching Bedfordshire LaceJean hails from Glasgow,
Scotland where she and her husband David work tirelessly on the Lace Guild
Website. Jean has always been interested in threads and textiles making dolls’
clothes as a child, while weaving and spinning came later. She came across a
bobbin lace instruction book in a local bookshop twenty years ago and sparked
her love of making lace. Little did she know how it would change her life!
Jean started teaching lace making in 1987 with a class full of complete
beginners and now teaches weekend and longer classes. She fell in love with
Bedfordshire lace when she first saw Margaret Turners’ ‘Bedfordshire Lace
Patterns’ in 1988, and while she makes other laces, Bedfordshire is still her
favorite.

In Jean’s class you may work on something of your own choosing or a pattern
provided by the tutor, sort out problems, discuss future projects and perhaps
try some simple designing! Needed are the usual bobbin lace supplies; pens,
pencils &p paper for notes and designing.

Susan Wenzel will be teaching Starts, Finishes & Cornersa.k.a. Lacy Susan
While living in England with her husband and children, Susan studied and fell
in love with lace making and advanced her studies with multiple workshops in
Bruges, Belgium.
Susan has taught at IOLI conventions and numerous charter chapters and has
been teaching for 14 years. She will be teaching Starts, Finishes & Corners in
Torchon.

Susan owns and operates “Lacy Susan” a retail lace making, tatting and knitted
lace business and will be our vender for the workshop weekend with the help of
her husband Ken.
Attached you will find a workshop application form.
Hurry! Only a few spaces left in the classes!

[lace-chat] What are we doing to celebrate

2005-12-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 > Feb 14th next! What are you doing to celebrate?
Well, Arachnes, here we are in the US freezing our little you know whats
off. It was snowing, just starting to, when we got up this morning. It is
the first time DD2 has ever seen snow. Now it is just raining ice and we
had to go out in it to do some laundry.
But to its advantage we now have Christmas in its proper context. Do you
know how stupid it feels to sing 'Jingle Bells' or Listen to 'Let it Snow,
let it snow let it snow' when it is 100 degrees F outside. And for once in
my life looking at Jumpers(sweaters) with snow flakes on them looks kind of
cute instead of dorky.
Ho Ho Ho, Yvonne.

[lace-chat] Secret Pal Thank You

2005-10-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dear Secret Pal,

All my apologies for not replying sooner but I was abroad for two weeks.
I came back this week-end and found your parcel amongst the mail, like a
nice welcome home present.
Thank you so much once again for the lovely gifts.
The pencil bag with the pencil comes just at the right time because my
old one becomes a little worn and to small.
The chocolate treats will be appreciated too. Halloween is quite new
for us in Belgium. Three years ago, it was the first time children came
to my door. When I was a child Halloween didn't exist here at all.
I'll probably give the ladybug to my youngest girl, her nickname on
internet is ladycox (cox from "coccinelle" = ladybug in French) because
we have an old VW beetle (also named "coccinelle" in French) we just
restored so she can drive it.
The cover cloth is lovely and I'll be very proud when I go for lace
demonstrations to put it on my pillow.
I hope you'll solve all the problems concerning your conference and wish
you a good autumn.

[lace-chat] Secret Pal Thank You

2005-09-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear Secret Pal,

Thank you so much for your parcel which arrived yesterday afternoon.
The bobbins are lovely, I like the grained wood they are made from. I
think I'll try them on a russian lace with the thread you sent me and
which will be perfect as a gimp.
The little fodable scissors will be very useful in my travel lace kit.
The bookmark is beautiful and fits perfect in the book I'm a reading at
the moment. Every time I'll open it and see the bookmark I'll think of
you and how lucky I am to have such a great Secret Pal.
The pictures of your brother are superb. You are very lucky to live in
such a beautiful country ! Here we have no mountains, the highest place
is about 700m above sea level, in a region called "les Ardennes",
well-known because of the battle of the Ardennes during the second world
war. My two girls went there for a short holliday this past week. Next
week they will go back to the University in Brussels.

Our cat is also thanking you for the delicious cat treats, she adores them.
You're very busy preparing the next conference of your lace guild. I
hope it will be a success, it's a pity it's so far for me...

Thank you again.

2005-08-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear Secret Pal,

Thank you so much for my parcel which arrived today. This afternoon I
went to visit my oldest daughter in Brussels where she is studying and
find the parcel at home when I came back.
The magnet clips have an irresistible smile and are already on my
fridge, ready to hold some important notes.
The continental commemorative is beautiful and absolutely compatible
with the bobbins I actually use on a "Fleuri de Bruges" lace. I'll soon
try it.
The tiny clips arrived intact and I'll add them to my lace kit. Thank
you also for the fishy notebook, the lovely cards and the pin from
Oregon. What are the flowers and the bird on it ?

Thank you again.

2005-07-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear Secret Pal,

Thank you so much for the lovely gifts you have sent to me.

The metal box is really lovely and perfect to put bobbins. I love those
boxes. Every time I begin a work, I take an empty box to put all I need
for it, so everything stays together. I only use continental bobbins to
work but I sometimes buy other ones, just because they are beautiful.
Thank you also for the hedgehog. When my youngest daughter saw him, she
said "how cute and soft he is !". I'm not sure I will keep it for long
:o)))
The carved box is also very nice and will have a special place in my
lace room.

Thanks again,

Thank-you. Apologies accepted. I did not realise that you were trying to be
flippant. It didn't come through in the e-mail format. (Haven't found any
flippancy emoticons, although I suppose ;-P comes closest.)

>Funny, but I never have these questions from Rabbis or their families.

For a very good reason. The Holocaust is the "low-level" entry to Jewish
experience and for many English Jews, whose Jewish education may range from
mediocre to non-existent, the sine qua non of Jewish experience tends to be
the Holocaust. It's easy, requires minimal study, and the media is
saturated by it every time a new Anne Frank play or film comes out.

OTOH, better educated Jews, i.e., rabbis and families, don't need to use
the Holocaust as a basis for Jewish identity because they have a much
better grasp of Jewish history and texts. It's the former, which is a kind
of intellectual laziness (lox-and-bagels Judaism, so to speak) that drives
me screaming round the bend. (And for those who doubt whether it's
intellectual laziness, just try asking them to name one Jewish source that
postdates the Bible and predates Rashi or to name one Israeli Knesset
member.)

IMO, questions like "What were you [Brits] doing?" are a waste of time for
all concerned. We can't change the past, only the future.

Avital

RE: [lace-chat] Archives

2003-12-07 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
It may have to do with when you joined. Spam has increased greatly over the
past year or so, according to people I know who do get spam. I'm one of the
lucky ones who gets almost no spam because I'm very careful about what I do
with my address. Every time your e-mail address appears on a Web page, for
example, it can be "harvested." LaRae's Locate a Lacemaker page is one
example that comes to mind. When I realised that the addresses were
unprotected, I replaced my private e-mail with a yahoo mail address that I
use as my "spamable" address. If your address has appeared on a guild list,
that could also be a source.

I see that you have a Yahoo account. From time to time, Yahoo changes its
policies to put you on mailing lists (= send me spam). They send out an
announcement and I always go into my yahoo profile and uncheck the boxes
that allow them to send you junk mail. So it's worth checking your yahoo
profile if you haven't done that for a while.

Other possible sources of spam are clicking on those links at the bottom of
spam that say "Click here to unsubscribe." All that does is tell the
spammer that he's got a live address. Posting on usenet groups used to be
another source of spam. Registering with your e-mail address for on-line
surveys or newsletters or software can also result in your address being
sent to a spammer. I use a throwaway address for those requests where I'm
not sure whether I can trust the person at the other end.

In Israel it is illegal to use a cellphone in a car unless you have a
holder/speaker for it. I should add that this law is not strictly enforced.
It's also illegal for a driver to smoke while driving, but very few people
know about this law. I have noticed that taxi drivers in my area, although
their car and breath may reek of smoke, don't usually smoke while driving

Could this be what you're looking for?

GERMAN RENAISSANCE PATTERNS FOR EMBROIDERY: A FACSIMILE COPY OF NICHOLAS
BASSEE'S NEW MODELBUCH OF 1568
Introduction by Kathleen Epstein

Nicolas Bassee, a native of Flanders, emigrated to Frankfurt am Main in
1561 where he established a printing office. By the end of the sixteenth
century, he was the successful publisher-printer of books in Frankfurt.
Among the works, Basse printed during his highly productive life was a book
of embroidery patterns. Entitled New Modelbuch von Allerhandt Art Nehens
und Stickens [New pattern book of all kinds of forms of sewing and
embroidery], this series of woodcuts had been printed and circulated in
various other books during the previous forty-five years. Many of the
patterns represent the best of late Gothic and early Renaissance embroidery
designs for furnishing textiles and clothing.

German Renaissance patterns for Embroidery presents exact-size facsimiles
of the existing one hundred plates, title page and colophon of the 1568
edition of Nicolas Bassee's New Modelbuch now housed in the rare book
collections of the Newberry Library in Chicago, Illinois. The plates
feature charted designs for counted cross-stitch and other counted thread
embroidery techniques, angular patterns for double running stitch, various
forms for surface embroidery, and geometric bands for satin stitch. The
illustrated introduction provides information on Bassee and his work, with
historical background on the development of the embroidery pattern book, as
well as an analysis of the plates.

lace patterns from 1561, and from the look of the name perhaps German. I
thought is has been republished by Unicorn Books, but have been unable to

Well the BBC is generally regarded as heavily influenced by the British
