[leaf-user] Problem after power outage

2003-03-21 Thread Patrick Teague
Hello,

I had a power outage yesterday morning, my leaf box wasn't affected because
it's on a UPS. However my external modem is connected to the surge
protector part of the UPS, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be
working. It was working fine prior to the power outage.

I've plugged the modem in the power light comes on. When I reboot the
leaf box, during POST 2 lights flash - Auto Answer Carrier Detect if I
remember correctly. After that I get nothing. Typing 'pon' which should
dial the modem doesn't do anything, however when checking /var/log/ppp.log
it lists 'date time firewall chat[18478]:' on each line then -

abort on (BUSY)
abort on (NO CARRIER)
abort on (VOICE)
abort on (NO DIALTONE)
abort on (NO ANSWER)
send (ATZ^M)
expect (OK)
ATZ^M^M
ERROR^M

is there any way to figure out whether ppp0 is pointing to the wrong place
or determine whether nothing is being sent to the modem or not? I'd hook
the modem up to another computer, but the only one with a wide COM port is
another linux box I'm unsure how to set that up either.

any ideas or help would be appreciated

Patrick

[leaf-user] AE editor on Bering distro

2003-03-21 Thread Patrick Teague
Hey,

I was wondering... I like that 'ae' editor in the Bering distro. Where can
I find that? I'm wanting to put it on my other machines (mandrake, slack)
for quick editing on things.

thanks

Patrick

Re: [leaf-user] 1680 floppy is not working for me! :(

2002-10-07 Thread Patrick Teague

This might have been the problem when I was using the gui (KDE in Mandrake),
but when I had started using my leaf box, a couple times I had tried to
mount /dev/fd0 it caused all sorts of problems generally wouldn't allow me
to even read the floppy if it even mounted. Ever since then the only way I
mount floppies via console is
mount -t msdos /dev/fd0u1680 (or 1440, etc).

Thanks for the suggestion though :)

[leaf-user] Problem with grsec Protection Fault

2002-08-26 Thread Patrick Teague

Hello,

I keep getting these grsec messages during bootup they're always at
different times, mostly when it's at the point of loading ppp, dhcpd,
shorwall, dnscache, or weblet. I'm wondering if this has to do with the
order they're loaded in syslinux.cfg or some such? It's always at least 1
of these usually 2... They're always packages that are listed at the end
of the syslinux.cfg

LRP=root,etc,local,modules,ppp,dhcpd,shorwall,dnscache,weblet

here's 1 of the grsec messages, the Protection Fault message shows up
occassionaly. Sometimes after it has finished booting it mostly works, but
most of the time, especially when at least 2 packages give the grsec
message, it can't do much of anything. When it does it on ppp package it
can't dial. Even going to the console entering pon it says pon: not
found. If it does it on shorwall there's all sorts of problems.

grsec: signal 11 sent to (sed:24895) UID(0) EUID(0), parent
(linuxrc:17503) UID(0) EUID(0)
grsec: more signal warnings, logging disabled for 30 seconds

The current solution to this problem is simply to continue rebooting until
all the grsec messages stop appearing. But this can take anywhere from 2-10
reboots average is around 5. If it was consistently the same package I
would simply figure it's a problem with the package or that space on the
floppy, but it seems to change with each reboot.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?

Cool. In your first posting, you mentioned you had trouble with
the CompuServe setup example not working for Earthlink. After
setting up for Earthlink, do you have suggestions for improving
or adding to the docs? Jacques is really good about incorporating
 suggestions.

Maybe having connection info on how to connect to several different ISPs for
examples or perhaps more information as to what exactly is going on. I used
to be able to do all sorts of things with modems under dos, but it's been so
long I can barely remember anything. I do remember there being an AT
setting that most modems had that allowed you to set the volume (S0, S1, etc
or S=1, S=2, etc). Would this be an extra AT command just prior to ATDT?
or would this be a part of ATZ? I can't remember whether ATZ is the reset or
part of the setup... I seem to have lost my USRobotics CD case with all
sorts of useful AT commands :( If I have time somewhere between now
sometime I'll see if I can find generic AT commands send them Jacques' way
as extra info to include.

  thanks for the help :)

Glad to help. I just read the PPP configuration information from
the URL above. It seemed to do a fair job of describing the
differences between the Compuserve example and providers using
PAP like Earthlink. I am probably biased from having some Linux
PPP experience though. If you have suggestions for improving the
docs, send them to the list. Jacques is good at incorporating
 them.

Ok, now I feel like a complete idiot... I only read that 5 or 6 times over
the last 2-3 weeks. I must have been asleep when I glanced over it again
the other day. Then again that wouldn't surprise me with this new job...
we're setting up a new warehouse, 6am-6pm Mon-Sun is standard, I drag home
fall asleep on the computer :) However, I'm not sure what exactly PAP or
CHAP authentication is I only have a vague idea of what the windows RAS
server is. Prior to asking all my questions I did check out the earthlink
site to see if it contained any useful info... only thing I found was
windows, been there, been hacked.

Hmm. I haven't looked at the compuserve example, but earthlink--at

Yay, it works, but um... any idea how to get it to redial or is the default

[leaf-user] Problems with Linksys Ethernet Card

2002-07-29 Thread Patrick Teague

Hello,

I have a Linksys 10BaseT/BNC Ethernet Combo card (I think it's LNE2, it's
definately PCI) I was hoping to use for my DSL connection. So far the only
info on the appropriate drivers I've found has suggested using tulip.
However, tulip works fine to get my newer Linksys 10/100BaseT LAN Card to
work, but for some reason it can't detect the older one. I've tried loading
tulip multiple times (having it listed 3 times, including various places
inside /etc/modules) but that doesn't work. I've tried to have it load all
of the other network card modules listed under PCI ethernet cards that
doesn't work (figured it wouldn't, but thought I'd try).

I've checked redhat mandrake hardware listings, not sure if any of the
other distributions have hardware listings that might list the modules
required (mandrake sadly does not). Working from 6-5 mon-sat doesn't help
either :)

thanks for the help :)

[leaf-user] Problem with 2.4.x kernel Linmodem drivers unknown IRQ conflicts

2002-07-10 Thread Patrick Teague

Hello,

I've been trying to get some Linmodem drivers to work correctly with Bering
1.0-rc3. The drivers work on my p350 with RedHat installed with both the
2.4.0 2.4.9-13 kernels. After compiling I end up with 2 files - pctel.o
ptserial.o. I've put both of these in /lib/modules made changes to
/etc/modules (is this the right place?). I've tried listing them before the
network module (tulip.o, which it does load), between the network module
the ppp modules (slhc, ppp_generic, ppp_async, ppp_deflate), after the
ppp modules.

Going through syslog it seems to do some strange things, but syslog looks
the same no matter where I list the 2 modules -

...
VFS: Disk change detected on device fd(2,44)
Linux Tulip driver version 0.9.15-pre9 (Nov 6, 2001)
PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:0e.0
IRQ routing confliect for 00:0e.0, have irq5, want irq 11
eth0: ADMtek Comet rev 17 at 0xca81b000, 00:03:6D:14:4B:88, IRQ 5.
CSLIP: code copyright 1989 Regents of the University of California
PPP generic driver version 2.4.1
PPP Deflate Compression module registered
..

This is on the exact same system I've been running RedHat on (I wanted to
test it on a system I knew worked). My only problem is I'm unsure where
RedHat has the startup modules listed or else I'd check that to see how it
loads these modules in what order. eth0 is a LinkSys EtherFast 10/100 LAN
Card the drivers disk has tulip.c (I did not compile this though, I used
the tulip.o in the Bering Modules tar).

I've also tried to view 192.168.0.254 because the weblet module is running,
but I get an error saying it can't find the server. 192.168.0.254:80 brings
up an invalid syntax error, pinging it times out. I would try pinging
out, but I'm unfamiliar with the linux networking tools :(
