[leaf-user] uClibc Bering 2.4: Dnsmasq constantly crashing

2011-02-13 Thread Roger McClurg
I've been running uClibc 2.4 since it came out about 5 years ago. Till
this week I've had no problems. Now DNSMASQ keeps stopping, and I can't
figure out why. None of the logs have any indication. Nothing on the
network changed (that I know of). When I start DNSMASQ it runs for
several minutes or several hours, but eventually it quits. Can anyone
tell me how to find and fix the problem?

[leaf-user] Backing up SSH

2008-04-08 Thread Roger McClurg
I'm building a new uClibc 3.1 router and have added sshd and ssh. I need
to know the proper way to backup the host and user information. The
logical way to backup the user info is to backup all of /root/.ssh. Can
anyone help?

[leaf-user] LINUXRC Error

2008-04-03 Thread Roger McClurg
I had a working uClibc 3.1 system running from the HD. Now when I boot
I the packages load then I get the following error: "/linuxrc: source:
line 277: can't open /var/lib/lrpkg/root.dev.own" followed by a kernel
panic. I tried replacing root.lrp and got the same result, so I figured
the problem was the configdb. I renamed that file and tried again. Same
result. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this problem?

If you are willing to use older hardware, there is an inexpensive
solution, the Nortel Contivity 1500 VPN. The Contivity is just a 286 PC
with plastic covers over most of the ports so the buyers didn't know
what they were getting. The Contivity has a medium footprint
(12"x10.5"x3.5"), includes a hard drive, and all the ports you would
want on a PC.

Back when the Contivity was current technology I replaced Nortel's
software with LEAF 2.1/Freeswan. I ran any number of tests against
Nortel, Cisco, and my new LEAF VPN. In every case the LEAF beat them
hands down. That was impressive because the LEAF was also running
Shorewall, SSH, DNS, and DHCP.

My only complaint with the Contivity 1500 is it's loud case fan. I
replaced mine with a $12 quiet fan and it works great. Of course you can
replace the hard drive with a CF card (you will need a CF-IDE
connector), and you get a totally silent machine that doesn't even need
a fan. The box is a bit heavier than it looks because the electronics
are totally encased in a steel RF shield (a DOD requirement).

The Contivity 1500 is no longer supported by Nortel, so they flood the
market. I got a few when a company I know was tossing about 50 of them
out to salvage. I saw one for sale on Ebay for $79. I'm sure if you look
you can find more of them at that price.

I have other smaller LEAF machines, but, as you said, they cost $300-$400.

[leaf-user] DST Change Files

2007-03-14 Thread Roger McClurg
Did anyone create new files for the Daylight Savings Time change? I
realize I can fudge the time zone values to EST4EDT, but then I have to
set it back and at the end of DST put it back.

I run the gamut of NIX machines so I've applied patches, compiled the TZ
files, and just upgraded the DST files from the media distribution. I
waited till the last minute to do my LEAF machines. I kept watching the
mailing list, but never say anything. What did everyone do that I missed?

BTW, I'm running BUC 2.42 if it makes any difference.

[leaf-user] Hdparm

2006-05-09 Thread Roger McClurg
Dear list,

I was wondering if anyone has compiled a version of hdparm for Bering
uClibc 2.4.1. I created an hdparm.lrp to spin down the hard drive after
a few minutes inactivity on my old Bering 1.2 machines, and now that I'm
updating them to the current uClib release it doesn't work (big surprise
there).

If there isn't allready an hdparm, can someone compile one for me? I can
supply the source if needed, and would be happy to share the hdparm.lrp
with anyone interested.

Thanks
Roger McClurg

[leaf-user] Re: PATH setting permanently

2005-05-12 Thread Roger McClurg
I don't know if anyone ever answered your question, but a simple way to
add the path is to create a script file and put it into /etc/init.d. I
have a utility script that does a number of things I want done after
everything else in the boot sequence is done. The script below would do
what you want. Copy it, and save it in /etc/init.d. Backup etc and reboot.

code

#!/bin/sh
#
# Utility script to add paths
#
RCDLINKS="2,S99 3,S99 4,S99 5,S99
PATH=${PATH}:/opt/mplayer-sound/bin/
export PATH

Subject: [leaf-user] PATH setting permanently
Hello all
I'm trying to add a permanent PATH to LEAF/BERING Shorewall
I tried to write this:
PATH=${PATH}:/opt/mplayer-sound/bin/
   export PATH

into several .conf files including

/etc/profile
/etc/crontab
/etc/shorewall/shorewall.conf
/etc/shorewall/start
but nothing changes whatsoever
echo $PATH gives:
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin
Typing as root:
PATH=${PATH}:/opt/mplayer-sound/bin/
I get:
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/opt/mplayer-sound/bin/
which is ok.
Please, how can I set it permanently ?
Thanks Roberto

[leaf-user] Re: leaf-user digest, Vol 1 #2624 - 3 msgs

2005-03-25 Thread Roger McClurg
Michael,
I have a number of home office sites connected to the corporate office
via Bering boxes running IPSEC VPNs. The VPNs have been as stable as rocks.

Our phones are VOIP and our email system is Lotus Notes. If you know
anything about Notes, you know it will kill all available bandwidth when
it sends or receives mail. This is disasterous to a VOIP conversation
especially outgoing (We are using cable with only 256K outbound.) I was
able to counter Notes by using QOS. I allotted fixed bandwidth to VOIP.
Unfortunately I am no expert on this subject and still have some bugs to
work out, but for the most part our phone calls work perfectly.

We have a client with two (2) facilities, each of which has a T-1 to the
Internet. Currently, their network is a mess; and we are redesigning
it.
One complication is their interoffice telephone system. Facility #1 has
a conventional connection via copper to the outside world. Between the
two facilities, they are using VOIP. There is a SonicWall at each
office acting as VPN gateways for data AND voice between the two
facilities. There is no QoS, load balancing, nothing -- perhaps, you
can imagine the problems they are having.
They are not interested in a third, point-to-point T-1, because it is
more than double the cost to their Internet T-1's, &c.
How have you designed a solution for a similar situation? How can I use
Bering-uClibc to create a more well behaved network?
What do you think?

A friend using Bering 1.2 is having problems getting dns information

Can anyone using Verizon DSL tell me what they are using for PPP

[leaf-user] Bering uClibc and MRTG

2005-01-25 Thread Roger McClurg
I upgraded one of my machines from Bering 1.2 to Bering uClibc 2.2.2.
Netsnmpd is up and running. Snmpwalk from my MRTG server returns data,
but MRTG can't get the data from the ethernet interfaces as it did on
the previous machines. Does anyone know what needs to be changed to get
MRTG to work with with Breing uClibc? BTW I'm using MRTG 2.9.17 on a Red
Hat 8.0 server.
