Yep. Reading is fairly relaxed.
I an actually a Brentford member, as they were my immediate local team when
the family moved down from Leeds.
But one of these days they're going to notice I only go to one game a
season nowadays.
I shall miss Griffin park funnily.

Mk Don's a few years ago actually revoked a ticket and refunded me, as they
said they'd tied me up with Elland Road ticket database.
Fortunately their relegation means that's no longer a concern :-)

I can't understand the decision to leave Hernandez (especially) and Alioski
(who always performs better when Saiz is playing) on the bench. Saiz
benefits from creative players to his left and right, and it's stretching
the use of that adjective to apply it to Sacko and Dallas. I also don't
understand the continued preference for Phillips over Vieira. I hope my
concerns are misplaced.

Re: [LU] Reading

2017-10-16 Thread Jeremy Thorpe
I pretty much agree with this. I said after the Ipswich game that we were over
powered in midfield that day and at Millwall, Cardiff plus the Wendies
afterwards. Without doubt Philips is at the root of the midfield malaise where
his goals have flattered to deceive the fact that he is not capable of stamping
any authority on a game. Midfield is disconnected from defence as well as Saiz
in attack. I'm starting to lay the blame firmly at TC's door. It's not the
players passion but his selection. Philips has to go and make way for Viera. I
feel O'Kane may kick on with him alongside but if not I'd consider Dallas in
there. At least he knows what's needed to win, a bit risky perhaps but I do
like Saiz, Hernadez and Alioski playing behind the "Deutscher", we just need
some combative midfield behind them to make it work.
In defence Jansson is off colour but anyone would playing alongside Cooper who
still is an accident waiting to happen. Beradi / Anita and Ayling all OK even
though Ayling got caught out for the Reading goal more often than not he's
saved us. It nearly works just needs TC to realise what's needed before the
calls for his head begin. Oh yeah Lonergan should have cemented his place and I
said before why did we get rid of Rob Green??

This was a horror show especially the first 45 minutes where we just didn't
look like a team. TC dropped his keeper which was a good decision but he now
has to seriously have a look at his style of play and look to whether he should
develop a Plan B.
It is painful to see us pass square balls across the back until we were put
under pressure and had to go back to Lonerghan. You could see the players
thinking we've been told to do this but it isn't working. We continually put
herself under pressure because to play this system you need at least one
midfielder who can sit deep, offer himself and make things happen. Both O'Kane
and Philips didn't seem to want to do this. It took TC 45 minutes to see that
this wasn't working and he changed it second half by moving O'Kane deep to sit
between them and start the moves. It was better but I still don't think we're a
team that is capable of playing this type of football in the championship. And
whilst we've been praising TC and slagging Garry Monk (me included) maybe we
should now begin to question whether Monk's limited tactics and straight
forward approach with a hungry team might be a better way forward to this
continental game that TC is trying to adopt with players who find it hard to pa
ss a ball at times. The reason TC doesn't want to see us punt it long is that
we don't have anyone capable of winning the ball. Lasogga is a big unit but he
is shite at 50:50 balls in the air, in fact today he rarely got off the ground
and when Grot came on he us a masterclass of how a 7ft bloke can look
ineffective in the air. I think the main weaknesses today other than the system
was our two central midfielders - O'Kane and Philips. It seemed at the start of
the season the TC had spotted something we hadn't and had moulded Philips into
a new , young superstar. I think we can reflect and see that Philips got a 4
year contract based on a few goals and half decent games against the poorer
teams in the league. In fact, our results have come against the weaker teams in
the leagues and if you take an objective look at the table and who we have
played you'd have to say a mid table finish with this team is about right.
However, I do think there is potential in this team, I do think we have some
better players and I think if TC can steady the ship and maybe pick players
more suited to his style we have a chance of improving on last year but I think
the next few games are the true test of TC and his team. I remember Wagner
adopted this style and was crucified by some Town fans after variable results
but he stuck to his task , got some players in who can handle it and he ended
up in the PL.
As for the game today, I thought it was a game between two low in confidence ,
poor teams. I thought Reading has a couple of top players. Their big striker
had a nice touch on him and one left Cooper for dead in the first half - you
rarely see a central defender left for dead like he did to Cooper. There
weren't many chances (I don't think we had any) and Lonergan made a decent save
for their only chance. The worrying thing for me though is that we played 45
mins looking like a team who weren't that bothered. We struggled to put 2
passes together and in midfield we didn't compete. Hernandez was again
relegated to the left wing and Saiz was playing high up the park and as a
result hardly had a kick as we struggled to take control of the game. Second
half, with O'Kane came d

Re: [LU] stream

2017-09-27 Thread Jeremy Thorpe
At the Ipswich game I felt Wiedwald, Cooper and Philips were the weak links.
After last nights' debacle hopefully Coopers a bench warmer again and we can
select a stylish defence of Ayling, Jansson, Pennington and Beradi who must
have had an attack of the vapours as he found himself clean through on goal
last night. Wiedwald did resort to the occasional Plan B punt up field after
messing up too often against Ipswich but has continuously demonstrated that
when squeezed by opposition forwards he is not skilful enough for playing out
of defence. He panics far too easily and gives his defence the jitters. I blame
him for the second goal last night, Rob Green would have been further forward
off his line narrowing angles. Still don't understand why we got rid of him.
Lonergan is far calmer and presently would be my 1st choice. Playing Klich and
Philips in midfield was giving Cardiff control of the game, ffs Bamba was
poncing around in front of them and slapping them in the face with his bb
 c. Klich doesn't work hard enough for me. Just watch him strolling back for
their third goal instead of putting himself in the mix on the goal line. I
can't blame him for his slip that lead to the 1st though one of those
unfortunate accidents. We did look so much better when Viera came on and he was
far more aggressive in shutting down their midfield. Philips I'm afraid he's
overrated. He's scored some good goals and everyone is blinded by those
moments, his Ipswich goal a case in point. But on Saturday he was anonymous and
last night incapable of stepping into O'Kanes boots. I'd start with Viera and
O'Kane vs the Wendies. Get this sorted and the forwards will look after
themselves. Saiz, Alioski and Hernandez would have the beating of most they
come up against provided the defensive midfield was giving them a platform to
work from. Last night though, Roofe as a lone target man wtf then Grot wtf he's
no target man yet, needs a good season with the U23's or out on loan at
Scarboroug
h to refine his bullying techniques. So far he's been pinged for every forearm
smash he's delivered. For me, until I see an alternative, if Lasogga is fit he
starts.
I hope TC sees these shortcomings and removes the blinkers regarding Wiedwald
and Philips and doesn't keep blindly selecting them.

Re: [LU] Liverpool 2 Leeds 0

2016-11-30 Thread Jeremy Thorpe
I said the first time I saw him preseason at Peterborough, Sacko is Carton
Palmer on Red Bull. He has a worse first touch than our old mate Becchio and
I haven't seen him hit the target once yet.
However in his defence he does work exceptionally hard when tracking back to
help his full back.

Sakho has signed on a one year loan deal (with option to make it permanent)
Lets hope he is better than his name sake Lamine who had one great game in
pre-season, was taken on on the basis of that performance and then got worse
and worse and was jettisoned after a handful of gamesIF and it is a big IF - we
can make him the next Max Gradel and IF (another big IF) Antonsson has the real
pace and eye for goal that youtube suggests he could be the next Beckford. Make
Bartley the next Naylor and things are looking up. Get Monk to get the best out
of Botaka and the other players and sort out a good formation, bring the
youngsters Coyle, Vierra and Phillips through and we may have something to look
forward to

A couple of interesting tweets by Phil Hay watching the training in Austria
"Always interesting watching these sessions. No doubt at all that 4-3-3 is the
system of choice. Working on wing play atm"Followed by "Two different line-ups
going through the same routine. Byram/Sloth on wings in one team, Doukara/Erwin
in the other. Full-backs overlapping"
Of course until we see the line-up for tomorrows game and the other pre season
games it is mainly guesswork as to who will be the starting XI v Burnley, and
it may well depend on the fitness of Luke Murphy (doing light training today) ,
Sam Byram staying, any more incoming players.
As it stands I reckon the back 5 picks itself and Uwe will start withSilvestri,
Beradi, Bellusci, Bamba, Taylor - Cook must start alongside Mowatt and then
either Murphy or Adeyemi That would leave a front 3 of Byram, Erwin and Wood

If Erwin can be as good as he looked in Scotland and if Wood can recapture the
form he has showed at times in the past that is a reasonable line-up - good
enough for the play offs perhaps ?

Fellow listers,

I know it's a pain when people do this and so I apologise in advance.

In my spare time (when I'm not being an idiot or annoying my kids) I write a
bit of poetry type stuff.
Anyway I've entered this competition to perform at Nozstock festival
(smallish music one in Herefordshire).
"So f**king what" I hear you say.
Well, I had to produce a video to accompany my work and it's posted (along
with 29 others) onto YouTube. I have 9 days to get as many 'thumbs up' as
possible in order to progress to the final 10.

I would really appreciate if you could take 1 1/2 minutes of your time to
view and like the video.
If you're interested the subject matter is 'free wifi at Greggs'.

>>>

Subject: Re: [LU] Becchio

Don't understand what he would add that we don't already have, other than
perhaps a striker who was always actually quite effective as a defender at
corners (an aspect of his play for which he was oft under-appreciated), and
given our vulernability at set pieces that itself would be good!

If, please God, we are moving away from the dreaded diamond and back to the
Grayson era of 4-2-3-1, then surely Antenucci can play the 1 and if not give
Morison a crack of the whip at it (Sharp may be a bit too midgety).
Seems mad to have all Morison's wages on the books and then also bring in
the wages of the bloke we swapped to get him in when they both basically do
the same thing. Morison has looked half decent whern he has got on the pitch
this season but he has never had a run.

Would much rather see us using the loan spaces available for a brick
sh1thouse of a centre back who can act as a leader and organiser and a
defensive midfielder who can destroy people and help bring along Cook. If
space still left over get in players who bring us width.

Incidentally I've just discovered he's at Littlehey Prison which is just down

last couple of years that the riot police got called in to put down, boiling
sugar thrown at officers, one caught a TV on the back of his head etc. Lots of
young offenders all being coached by Harry by the sounds of it.

You know I'm normally the first to moan about passing backwards and sideways
that but didn't get that from them today.
I'll re visit the match later.

Key thing for me were that we need better midfielders. Murphy and Austin are
not up to it. Both Doukara and Sharp need a creative midfield to thrive. What
did Benedicic look like the other night what was his midfield role? Someone
said he's quite a big unit?

The defence looked competent and can only improve but Pearce looked
uncomfortable on his right foot and Byram was not at his best.

[LU] : I Saw Who Swum and Who Sank

2014-08-10 Thread Jeremy Thorpe

"I Saw Who Swum and Who Sank" is Hockadoodles latest soundbite and
observation as a result of yesterday.

FFS you dorkany LU fan could have told you precisely how that team you
selected was going to perform.

Wooton, Warnock, Murphy, Austin, Huntwhat the F possessed you to think
they were good enough to wear the shirt never mind face up to Millwall at
the Den.

If you and el Presidente can't off load them then banish them to the stiffs
for the rest of the season and play your fecking recruits along with the
U21's.

You have three weeks to find 2 centre halfs, a defensive midfielder, a
"Sharp" shooter and persuade the man to buy Pringle & Agard.

What have you been doing all pre-season 'cos you have not been looking at
your teamand you have definitely not been putting a shift in. Methinks
you've pulling everyone's plonker and clocking off early each day.

Get on it or get out!

And as for fitnessget the SAS in and hammer them so they can get in
everyone's faces for a full 90 'cos they looked like pussies

S 75 protection no. He had a winding up order against LUFC that meant his
bank account was frozen and trading with credit / debit card companies was

the winding up order will be discharged so he'll be able to trade again.

We have zero chance with Hockaday.

He will be an unmitigated disaster us.

Cellino has so far invested jack all and the fact that fans can't buy season
tickets with credit cards (presumably because of s 75 protection) doesn't
scream anything other than financial mismanagement to me.

Championship outfit Leeds United, [football] direct news has discovered.

The mystery businessman turned down the chance to join a similar project
aimed at taking control of Blackburn Rovers earlier this year, but he
retains an interest in becoming involved with a football club.

He spent the best part of a year pondering entrepreneur Ian Currie's request
for him to pump money into an offer for Rovers before opting against the
idea.

A source close to the businessman told FDN that he is giving serious
consideration to the prospect of bidding for Leeds and is monitoring with
interest the situation surrounding Italian Massimo Cellino, who also wants
to take the helm at Elland Road."

With the big pay cheques professional sportsmen collect also comes
a big responsibility in that they are the face of the club and
 continually they forget that.

Zoopla pay a huge amount amount of money expecting the advertising
of their name to gain a beneficial return. But if some idiot
wearing their name upsets their customers (even just a small
percentage) then its not money well spent from their perspective.

And its not just the player's behavior in the first place, if the
press keeps the story alive then Zoopla's name will continually be

"...and yes Phil, I would still pick Lees...he wasn't the only one at fault
for the goal.
The real surprise has been Zak's decline in the last 3 weeks, its almost as
if we've been sold something that was then swapped under cover of darkness.
He looked good in 2013."

I have to agree Lees was not solely at fault for their goal. Pearce created
the opportunity for Phillips to make the pass before Lees came into play. He
then gave Nugent a little space and Kenny failed to spread himself wide
across the ball and feet of everyone involved.

Right now Lees and Pearce are the best centre back partnership we have.
Zalukias is a liability. He's been dining off that last ditch tackle in the
dying seconds of the Watford match for weeks. I was screaming for BMD to get
him and Murphy off at half time against Watford. He continually missed his
headers and stood too far off attackers. I don't think he's up to the
intensity of these cup final style matches week in week out Pearce and Lees
are. Scottish football was probably his level.

Of the rest. Reg runs around but I want to see more goal threat. Ross needs
someone to play off. Kebe and Stewart need to go to pre-season boot camp and
get up to speed. Brown and Austin are not the answer I think I'd rather see
Mowatt and Byram given a chance to control midfield. That means Peltier in
the back four. Warnock was a much better option to Pugh. Diouf does now have
a fat arse and I could not work out the point of bringing him on other than
5 minutes in a shop window.

BMD find Kebe and Stewart 2 development squad matches before the Ipswich
game and get them fit, otherwise only play one each half and please please
please don't let this mystery forward you've been speaking to be that man
from Buenos Aires, I don't ever want to see him in a Leeds Shirt again.

We are about the same level as them and that's bottom third of this league.
Tonge and Varney now off
Byram and Smith on...route one perhaps...

Ohhh no just opened up like a Sunday League team

2 - 0

3 league defeats in a row now... this system needs a serious review

We are quite simply not creating owt

Don't you just love the sound of a Breakdown.

I couldn't take it after the Wolves game.
I'd tuned in last night just in time to celebrate Byrams goal, then switched
off. Just couldn't sit there waiting for the inevitable!.
Problem it's not just the moment, it's the kids, the wife, the laptop they
all cop the abuse.
If I had a dog I'd call it F*!king Warnock!

Revelling in a dodgy refereeing decision going against Man U and knocking
them out of the chumps league whilst nervously watching our game online.
All going perfectly well and then ...
Sick to f'ing death (I've calmed down a bit now!) of us getting no f'ing
luck ever (ok maybe occasionally!) Tourette's kicking in now ... F'ing
b'tard c'ting football, why did I ever decide it was a good idea?!

Lol! No - he's a Yorkshireman, just like me. We went to school in
