[LU] One for Voicey
From the New Statesman http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/lifestyle/2012/07/last-champions The Last Champions Leeds United’s title win of 1992 was the last of its kind in many ways. November 1992. Éric Cantona joins Manchester United from Leeds United for £1.2m. In the previous season, the last of the old First Division, Howard Wilkinson’s Leeds had beaten Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United to the title, the arrival of tempestuous France striker Cantona in February supposedly being the catalyst for Leeds’ triumph. They clinched the honour when Manchester United lost 2-0 to Liverpool, after which Ferguson told the ITV cameras that “Leeds haven’t won the league. Manchester United have lost it.” The following season, Cantona became the creative centre of Ferguson’s United as they ended their 26-year run without a title. The narrative formed that Ferguson succeeded in handling Cantona, the difference between winning the league and losing it, where Wilkinson ultimately failed – the first of many managers seen off by Ferguson as his side dominated the new Premier League. But is this fair? In his new book, The Last Champions: Leeds United and the Year That Football Changed Forever (published by Bantam Press), Dave Simpson busts the Cantona myth – he only scored three goals for Leeds in 1991-92, none of which changed matches – and breaks the mould in exploring team-building. The current fashion in football writing is to examine how managers built dynasties: Jonathan Wilson’s Inverting the Pyramid shows how Herbert Chapman won consecutive titles at Huddersfield Town and Arsenal, how Helenio Herrera made Internazionale into Italy’s leading club and how Valery Lobanovsky brought long-term success to Dynamo Kyiv, whilst Graham Hunter’s book on Barcelona praises the structural planning that made them the world’s most technically advanced club. Conversely, Simpson asks how Wilkinson achieved his singular success and why it has been so neglected within the history of English football, and even within that of Leeds United. This was Leeds’ third (and, as it remains, last) championship. The previous two were won by Don Revie in 1969 and 1974, after which he became England manager and was replaced, infamously, by nemesis Brian Clough, whose 44-day reign was dramatised in David Peace’s dark, paranoid novel The Damned United. Revie turned Leeds from Second Division also-rans into a domestic and European force, changing their kit from blue and yellow to white to channel the spirit of Real Madrid, his club’s insularity infuriating Clough and others but proving central to their decade-long challenge for major honours. Leeds’ long decline began in the mid-Seventies; the board appointed several former members of Revie’s team as managers in unsuccessful efforts to recapture the past. In 1982, under Revie favourite Allan Clarke, Leeds were relegated; he was replaced by another, Eddie Gray, and then Billy Bremner, neither of whom could return them to the First Division. Finally, in October 1988, with Leeds fighting demotion to the Third Division, Bremner was sacked. As we learn here, managing director Bill Fotherby, having already made an audacious effort to sign Diego Maradona, tried to persuade Bobby Robson to quit England for Leeds – Robson declined but recommended Sheffield Wednesday manager Howard Wilkinson, who agreed to step down a division, convinced that he could revitalise the former champions. Wilkinson, a pragmatic and intelligent disciplinarian, succeeded where Clough failed in removing all Revie mementoes; he reorganised the board, demanding influence over all aspects of the club. Breaking up cliques, introducing harder training and dropping several players, ‘Sergeant Wilko’ quickly turned Leeds around, winning the Second Division in 1990 and finishing fourth in 1991 before his unexpected and unrepeated victory the season after. Wilkinson signed a certain type of player to get Leeds out of the Second Division and another on promotion, making notorious ‘enforcer’ Vinnie Jones central to his midfield before replacing him with playmaker Gary McAllister. Jones was the first of Wilkinson’s buys to be dumped: a constant theme throughout, with so many interviews with ex-players closing with melancholic reflections on the brusque manner of their exits. (In this, there’s continuity with Simpson’s previous book, The Fallen, where he attempted to trace everyone who’d been in The Fall with the group’s only constant member, Mark E. Smith, who said that running it was like managing a football team: “sometimes you’ve got to replace the centre-forward”.) In a manner seldom attempted, let alone achieved since, Wilkinson turned uncapped and unheralded players into champions: none of his first-choice centre-forwards, central defenders or his goalkeeper were internationals. In summer 1991, backed by millionaire socialist chairman Leslie Silver, Wilkinson spent heav

Watched the women at Cardiff today and loved every minute of it, just sad that I've had to cancel my visit there on Saturday for their next game. I'm more than happy if folk want to join me and I guarantee that it will be a laugh Excuse me if I'm being positive but that's what people are like from LS13 I would expect to be joined by Mr and Mrs Blythe for at least the fun as I know they like a good meal :-) (Jon I'll contact you off list with my plan - Mr and Mrs Voicey are you up for it?) [LU] Luke Varney completes Leeds United move
BBC saying: Portsmouth striker Luke Varney has joined Championship side Leeds United on a two-year deal. The 29-year-old accepted a compromise agreement over the remaining two years on his Pompey contract. Portsmouth cannot afford to keep any of their contracted players on their current deals. With Varney gone, the remaining seven are Tal Ben Haim, Greg Halford, Erik Huseklepp, Dave Kitson, Liam Lawrence, David Norris and Kanu. On Tuesday Pompey announced they had until 10 August to get their remaining contracted players to take pay cuts or leave the club. Varney's exit means the Fratton Park side now have seven senior players left on their books. The former Crewe, Charlton, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool striker, who cost the Addicks £2m when he left Gresty Road in 2007, has scored 68 goals in 288 appearances with his clubs. He got six goals in 30 games for Portsmouth after joining them from the Rams last summer. ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org PETE CASS (1962 - 2011) Rest In Peace Mate

Re: [LU] Leeds Dripping Riots
http://www.secretleeds.co.uk/forum/Messages.aspx?ThreadID=215&StartAtMessage=0ص Full details can be found on pages 432-437 of volume 2 of John Mayalls "Annals of Yorkshire" published in 1874 and dealing with events in Yorkshire from the earliest history to that date. i will just give a brief summary but I recommend looking up the fascinating details.Incidentally these books are a goldmine of information and are available in scanned pdf format from various suppliers on the net. Mr Chorley was a surgeon with offices in Park Square, his I rish cook took some dripping home with her regarding it as a "perk" of the job. Chorley had been unhappy with her for some time and spoke to his friend who happened to be the chief magistrate of Leeds. he recommended charging her and the cook was duly convicted and sent to Armley which in those days (1864/1865) was for both sexes. This caused a mass outcry from the working classes with ballads, graffiti and other derogatory stuff appearing.A collection for the cook was held and when a fake announcement was put out about her release crowds flocked to Armley a week before the correct date.On being told they were wrong they went round to Chorley's house. He came out and told them he would do it afgain at which point he was pelted and his windows put in.Police were called and order restored. However a week later the cook was released early in the morning and slipped off to Scarborough. The crowds who assembled refused to believe she had gone and ugly scenes ensued. Finally convinced they went to Park Square and from there to the Town Hall where the council were sat panicking. The council sent for more police from bradford and also a squadron of cavalry from York.It was February and there was snow and ice on the streets so the crowd pelted Chorley and his house with snowballs as well as the police. A baton charge was led by the chief constable of Leeds (they led from the front in those days!) but he slipped and broke his hip, dying some weeks later from this. the police managed to clear the crowd but not before an onlooker was hit by a stone and given a fatal wound. Some people were arrested and the crowd dispersed before the cavalry were used. If the cavalry had been used we would in all likelihood know this as the Leeds equivalent of Manchesters "Peterloo" as the streets were very narrow then around the town Hall and a charge would have trampled people underfoot. This is a very condensed version and it is worth reading the events in full to get the proper sense of drama. ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org PETE CASS (1962 - 2011) Rest In Peace Mate

Re: [LU] Terry
You need to study the results of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry to understand this. Basically it's in chapter 47 of the Lawrence Inquiry report by Lord MacPherson which was published in 1999 DEFINITION OF RACIST INCIDENT === 12. That the definition should be: "A racist incident is any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person". 13. That the term "racist incident" must be understood to include crimes and non-crimes in policing terms. Both must be reported, recorded and investigated with equal commitment. 14. That this definition should be universally adopted by the Police, local Government and other relevant agencies. The whole report is at http://www.archive.official-documents.co.uk/document/cm42/4262/4262.htm and I would recommend anyone who has even the vaguest interest in racism in the UK in the last decade to read it. Most forward thinking organisations adopt this definition as their starting point for deciding what is and isn't racist. Terry's comments were examined and percieved as being racist, hence the court case. Without all the detail of the case which will no doubt be presented in October you cannot gainsay the decision to prosecute. Funnily enough (now) this is how our legal system works. I for one will be interested to hear the prosecution's case. [LU] YEP LATEST Leeds United in transfer talks: Warnock poised to splash new owner’s cash
Not much leaking out of SOTG this morning then. http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/sport/leeds-united/latest-whites-news/leeds-united-in-transfer-talks-warnock-poised-to-splash-new-owner-s-cash-1-4699716 By Phil Hay Published on Monday 2 July 2012 08:17 Neil Warnock was working to tie up loose ends in the transfer market today, in preparation for the planned takeover at Leeds United. The United manager is back after a holiday abroad and awaiting permission to conclude multiple transfers with funds supplied by prospective new owners of the Championship club. Investment from the Middle East is poised to arrive at Elland Road after an unnamed group agreed in principle a deal to purchase Leeds from chairman and majority shareholder Ken Bates, subject to due diligence and the investors passing the Football League’s Owners and Directors Test. The buyers are understood to see Warnock – appointed in February and under contract until the end of next season – as integral to their immediate plans and to have offered assurances about both his position and the money available for transfers. Warnock has worked in the meantime to put deals in place ready to complete, and the arrival of goalkeeper Paddy Kenny from Queens Park Rangers appears reliant only on Leeds meeting a fee of around £500,000. Sources in Leicester also claim the transfer of right-back Lee Peltier to Elland Road is effectively a done deal, with City said to value the 25-year-old at £350,000. Warnock has other matters to attend to with midfielder Michael Brown – recently offered a new one-year deal on reduced terms – now out of contract and Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Aidan White also at the end of his deal. Leeds have compensation rights for the 20-year-old, who has yet to accept the offer of a fresh deal at Elland Road, who is believed to have spoken to a rival Championship side. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, look ready to step up their interest in Ross McCormack in a bid to beat Huddersfield and Bristol City to the United striker’s signature. ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org PETE CASS (1962 - 2011) Rest In Peace Mate

[LU] takeover thoughts from web
http://www.clarkeonenil.co.uk/06/2012/an-open-letter-to-leeds-uniteds-next-owners/ The editorial collective asks for a longer view (with thanks to GG). Sir, You may be based out of the country, out of Europe, even. But these days you can’t escape English football wherever you go. So you immediately know who the big clubs are, what they doing and you even find out about Leeds after a while. If, dear new owner, you are under forty, you might remember when Leeds were quite a big club themselves. If you are a bit older, you might remember when there was no bigger club anywhere. Take for example Real Madrid: great in the late fifties and early sixties but the Revie Boys would have thrashed them from 1965 on. But this is not another trip down Memory Lane. This is about today and tomorrow. It’s about planning for the future. It is now over fifty years since a 33 year-old Don Revie was appointed Leeds United manager by a brave Chairman and Board who were committed to the club. It was a risk that paid huge dividends. Meticulous planning slowly began to pay off. The dominance Leeds achieved did not happen overnight but you could clearly see it coming once The Don had begun to influence everything. As time went by, simply being a Leeds fan was one long joy. The point I’m trying to bring across is that, once in the midst of greatness, everything about the club was great. I daresay the Revie Boys themselves, now respectfully ageing, didn’t see it quite the same as us fans since they were always struggling to recover from knocks and never given time to properly get fit but for us it was so exciting. It might seem now that we did really well in terms of trophies but, at the time, we thought we could and should have won everything we competed for. Watching the matches was fantastic but the time between games was special, too. After a mighty encounter in the 6th Round of the FA Cup, you just couldn’t wait till the Wednesday and another huge European match. Then back to winning the League the following Saturday. It didn’t always work out but it the whole adventure was amazing. And what do have now? Leeds were in an even worse position in 1961 than we are today, a second tier side. But they invested in the future with an ambitious young manager whom they backed in the transfer market. The manager built a team but also made the club one big family unit where everyone mattered. Ground improvements came after the team built success on the field. The nearest thing to a corporate box in those days was probably an old Air Raid Shelter. So, what exactly do we have now? A manager who is less than 2 years away from a State Pension and a not-so-go-ahead Chairman over the last 7 years who became a pensioner in the last century (and who hopefully is selling to you as you read this). We express no significant opinion either way on Neil Warnock but it is very unlikely that he has the hunger, desire, ambition and the time required that drove Revie to make Leeds a world class club from absolutely nowhere. They – well George Santayana says that, “Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes.” That’s what is worrying about Leeds right now, we seem to have forgotten the bright times from our past and that includes the Wilkinson/O’Leary era. We seem stuck in the bad old habits that led us nowhere. I know most modern Leeds fans are thinking only of this coming season, with a dim thought of the next one. Don Revie was planning a revolution. He was planning for a time when the second tier no-hopers were going to become part of Europes elite. And, against all odds, he succeeded because of his strong character and because his ambition was backed up. And what do we have now? Who is going to your Don Revie? Over to you new owner (stc). ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org PETE CASS (1962 - 2011) Rest In Peace Mate

But hey we are where we are. All I can say is that this is a very good statement in my mind as the club are being polite, a sure sign that Bates has been told NOT to piss anyone off as per usual. Admittedly a lot of that has been fuelled by a moronic press iaded and abetted by a distant FA. No off the pitch shennaigans this time round, no rumbles from within the team camp and no widldy optomistic forecasts from a team that always looked like it would never get further than the group stages. The way football is run and organised in England mitigates against having the best possible national team (the arguments that support that are well rehearsed). I like Roy Hodgson and the way he's organised things, he got a lot of mileage out of the team he had and I have a sneaking feeling that the world cup qualifiers later this year could be interesting - I've not been this intersted since 1966. [LU] Takeover Statement: Trust update
Takeover Statement: Trust update DateMonday, May 28, 2012 at 10:38PM In response to the questions that have come our way in increasing numbers over the last few days, Leeds United Supporters' Trust can confirm that we are aware of firm interest from a number of parties looking to buy Leeds United. In common with Phil Hay of the Yorkshire Evening Post's comments on Twitter, we understand that Leeds United are in talks with at least two separate groups. We also understand there is one firm bid on the table at present. In February we responded to Ken Bates' suggestion that we "put our money where our mouth is," by asking any potential investors, who shared the aims and ambitions of our members and of our Vision Statement, to contact the Trust with a view to working together to take Mr Bates up on his offer. We developed a presentation so interested parties could see how working with L.U.S.T. could help them, and have been in contact with a number of people to explore ways of bringing about change for the better at Elland Road. As part of this ongoing work, we have spoken to two groups who are interested in buying Leeds United. At this stage it is not possible for us to go into details about our conversations with these groups, as with a firm offer on the table we would not want to jeopardise any current negotiations. Leeds United Supporters' Trust would welcome any move that helped the club to fulfil the aims of our Vision Statement, and our members increasingly tell us that they feel a change of ownership would be the best route towards positive change at Leeds United. On Friday we invited our members and Leeds fans everywhere to let us know their thoughts about the summer so far, and we received hundreds of emails in response. The clear and resounding message from our members was that they have completely lost faith in the current Leeds United board's ability to deliver a successful football club. Following the failure to meet Neil Warnock's target of signing a new group of players before his holiday deadline, and Robert Snodgrass' comments about past promises not being met; and after last season which saw players sold, failure on the pitch, and the season ticket income used to finance corporate facilities rather than new players; our members firmly believe that new owners and a new board are required at Leeds United to match the ambition of the fans, the players and the manager. We are sure that the news of discussions around the sale of the club will be warmly welcomed by our members, and make disaffected supporters feel more optimistic about the future. L.U.S.T. would like to stress to all of the parties interested in buying Leeds United that building a good relationship with the supporters must be one of their first priorities. As the representatives of a group of more than 5,000 Leeds fans, and as a Supporters' Trust affiliated with Supporters Direct, we we will always welcome conversation with any potential new owner about how we can work together to achieve the aims of our Vision Statement. We would also encourage L.U.S.T. members to keep sending their views to us, either by email to chair...@lufctrust.org, or via our blog, Facebook, or Twitter. L.U.S.T. is here to represent the views of Leeds fans, and we want to hear your thoughts and opinions on the news of takeover discussions at Elland Road. [LU] L.U.S.T.: Your Thoughts On The Summer So Far
For info Original Message Subject:L.U.S.T.: Your Thoughts On The Summer So Far Date: Fri, 25 May 2012 12:20:09 +0100 From: Chairman To: j...@boocock.net L.U.S.T. Your thoughts on the Summer so far <#> With our season long since finished and May nearly over, we'd like to know how Leeds supporters are feeling about the summer. Neil Warnock’s arrival brought increased optimism, and even though the last few games of the season didn’t see much joy on the pitch, Warnock’s talk about shaking up his squad for a promotion push kept fans feeling hopeful. The signing of Jason Pearce was a good start towards an improved defence next season, and more players were said to be following as Warnock planned to get his new side together before taking his summer break. Those players haven’t arrived, though, and a deal to sign Joel Ward looks set to fall through. Warnock’s comments this week suggested we won’t be seeing any new faces until after his holiday - and that the ones we might see won’t cost very much. Meanwhile, McCormack and White seem set to turn down new contract offers and head out of the door, while Snodgrass has been outspoken about wanting to see the club make some ambitious signings before he decides whether to stay. We’d like to know how Leeds fans are feeling about all this now the summer is truly underway. Leeds United Supporters’ Trust is directed by its members, and we’re interested in your views on the current situation. Are you still optimistic? Do you think Warnock can get the players he needs for promotion? Are you looking forward to seeing Leeds challenging next season, or worried we’ll be also rans? Should Leeds splash the cash on key new players, or should we bide our time to make sure we get quality? Do you agree with Snodgrass about the need for ambitious signings? Are you concerned about the reported lack of cash to pay for Joel Ward? Would you like to see the club meet the demands of Snodgrass, Clayton, McCormack and White, or would you be happy to see them leave? Do you think Leeds have learned from last season, or are we set for another disappointing year? Please let us know what you think about how things are going for Leeds United, and remember: if you’re a member of the Supporters’ Trust, then your views will shape what we do. We’re here to pursue the issues you feel are important, so please feel free to email your thoughts tochair...@lufctrust.org or comment on our blog, Facebook or Twitter accounts. It was at the Odeon on a Sunday afternoon. http://youtu.be/0tUdUVmnWNc Best Gig has to be The 'Oooo at Leeds Uni in early 1970, I love the Deluxe CD reissue of this gig. It catches Magic Bus exactly as I remember it. Special http://youtu.be/fay1uk7wpnQ Wierdest gig must be watching the recording of John Martyn "Live At Leeds" from the mobile sound truck which was parked outside the Riley Smith Hall at Leeds Uni. Only to find out later that the released version was mainly recorded in London, now rectified with the 2010 release which includes the complete Leeds gig (Thanks McGeoch ye tosspot) No film of the Leeds gig so enjoy this: http://youtu.be/lusPaLec9TE I have seen hundreds of gigs over the years and I have a massive music collection but nothing pleases me more than finding something new or something I missed years ago. I'm 58 now but I still get excited when I hear that WEM hum just before someone plugs in. Just this week I came across Simone Felice, he's touring as we speak but check out this free download of a track off his new eponymous album: http://soundcloud.com/tomreveal/simone-felice-new-york-times-1 My spewing North over twenty years ago also brought me into contact with a pile of rather fabulous Scottish musicians. [LU] Pre worldnet warmup Tournament up in London July 8th Enfield.
So are we going to get a Lards team up for this? We need to have a warm up if we are going to worldnet Vets anyway (I've entered a team but don't even know if we have any players)now read on: Supporters Direct have asked us if we would like to stage a mini IFA tournament as part of their annual conference which is at Enfield Town FC on Sunday the 8th July this year. It would be at Enfield Town FC on the two full size pitches adjacent to the Ground and there would be no cost to ourselves. Our plan is to start at 10 am and finish by about two thirty pm - the format would be two groups of four and a final which saw the two group winners playing off against each other for the Winner of the Tournament. This would be an ideal chance for teams to have a run through in real IFA conditions before WorldNET. Any IFA team who wishes to may enter it will be on a first come first served basis but only ask for a place if you are definately able to take part please. Re: [LU] LU - Questions
On 04/03/2012 09:40, Michael ALCOCK wrote: It's not just the state of the club that's putting people off, but in the current climate, it's certainly helping to keep people away. Good point well put Michael. But add to this the unseemly way in which Bates conducts himself (and was always known to conduct himself) and then it is easy to see why so many of us, who have been as stalwart a supporter as the next person, just refuse point blank to fund this bizarre man's activities. My reasons go much deeper than just my unstinting support for "the club" - thanks for the definitions Rick, I thought they were useful. As I said at the start of his tenure, it would have been better if Bates had spent his time taking his lovely wife to bingo and leaving Leeds United alone. There was another offer on the table when he took over but for whatever reason Krasner and his colleagues decided to install Bates. Whatever Bates and his apologists may say about there being no other offer on the table I disagree. Norman Stubbs had all the correct funding and ideas in place following extensive and expensive due diligence. Due diligence which I had explained to me extensively in the Summer before Bates did take over by a respected Judge, who is also a Leeds fan. The key problems were the tax man and the ground followed closely by the demands being made by the consortium. (For instance one member of the consortium, Helm, apparently wanted to remain a director). Dave Nattan and I spoke on the eve of the takeover as I was heading by train to Leeds to sit in on the final hours of the signing off. He was the person who told me Bates was taking over and like many others I couldn't believe it. Norman Stubbs and his team were sat waiting in their Lawyer's office all ready to take over when Bates appeared. The wrangling went on late into the day and in the end the Stubbs team just went home. Simon Morris had been quite laid back about the Stubbs deal and was not happy about Bates but in the end went with his pals. (Morris had met with Stubbs and co that day) Krasner's mob must have seen more advantage in the Bates deal which looked to be, in essence, to pay the taxman off asap. I had concrete assurances from the Stubbs group that they would investigate ways to involve fans in a meaningful way with the club, something I still feel is the key to getting out of this mess but which I still hasn't been explored properly by either the fans or the club or any potential buyer. Even Redbus during the administration wanted to check this out as a possibility. Norman's support was made up of a number of well heeled and financially liquid businessmen, all of whom were Leeds supporters and all of whom understood the potential risks. After Bates took over Norman rang me, he said that there was nothing much more to be done. I asked him if he had any options left and he replied "Nope, its on to the next project". In later months he told me that he had had approaches from Bates about investing in the club, Bates however would not talk unless Norman put several millions up front. The immediate wrangling that took place post the Krasner period show just how useless as owners they were so I suppose whatever the outcome we were going to end up here. Until a proper management is put in place, one that really understands Leeds United as a club and one who understands that we are in 2012 and not 1812 we will stay in the doldrums for a very long time yet.
