Re: [LU] NON LU: book recommendations

2016-04-11 Thread Simon Austin

Seconding Asher - he's basically Banks but with a conservative philosophy.

There's also Alastair Reynolds, who does big ships, AIs, etc, but in a
relativistic universe.

And Ann Leckie's "Imperial Radch" trilogy, the first book of which won
every SF award going. A ship's AI escapes destruction by hiding in one
of it's own human drones and sets out for revenge.

If you are willing to give an unknown author a try then I recommend:

Re: [LU] Sacking McDermott: Did Cellino Do The Right Thing In The Wrong Way?

2014-02-12 Thread Simon Austin

We have those every year... at home usually.

Losing 6-1 to Watford last year. 5-0 to Blackpool the year before. That
3-0 up to 6-4 down to Preston the year before. 5-2 to Barnsley and 4-0
to Cardiff in that season as well.

And our cup runs have only flattered recently because we've been mainly
playing Premier League teams. We've lost to a few no-marks when we
weren't: Hereford in 2007. Histon the year after.

And it's not as if sacking the manager around this time has helped in
either of the past two seasons we've tried it. We were 10th when Grayson
was ditched in Feb 2012, and ended up 14. Warnock left us on 12th in
March 2013, and we finished 13th.

So he prefers to play younger players. Eddie suggested later that he

[LU] Update! Re: Bates gone!

2013-07-27 Thread Simon Austin
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/jul/27/ken-bates-sacked-leeds-jet

Ken Bates says he was abruptly sacked from his tenure as the Leeds
United president by the
new owners, GFH, after he entered the club into a contract with the
private aeroplane company 247 Jet that could be
used to fly him to Leeds from his Monaco home.

The cost of this contract to which Bates committed the Championship
club, which is under financial strain, is thought to be £500,000 over
three years.

Previously Bates has been flown by private jet. The costs of use of a
private jet to the club is understood from sources who have seen the
Leeds accounts to be around £120,000 a year. He told the /Observer/ that
his expenses had not changed for the eight years he was Leeds chairman,
and that GFH were well aware of them when they bought the club in
December. He declined to cover the details of precisely what they covered.

A key sticking point with GFH is that Bates did not gain the approval of
the board for the new, three-year private jet contract. Bates argues he
was not able to do so, and he was advised in June that as a director of
the club, he was able to bind the club into the contract.

"I saved the club money, because this was a sterling contract, rather
than euros," Bates said. "I did it in the best interests of the club."

Currently on holiday in Italy with his wife Suzannah, Bates said he
received a hand-delivered letter last Wednesday from GFH, raising
concerns. He expected to deal with it on his return from holiday, but
instead: "Two days later, they told me I was sacked."

Describing his treatment as "despicable," Bates said he is considering
suing. GFH said there were confidentiality agreements in place, and
declined to comment.

Does pre-season mean anything? Last year we won 6 of 7 games, and came
13th. 11/12 4 wins, 2 draws - 14th. 10/11 4 wins, 2 losses - 7th. The
year we got promoted from League 1 we only won 2 and drew the other 5.
First season in League 1 we lost six pre-season games, then won 8 of the
first 10 league games (and would have been promoted, except for that -15).

Probably doesn't pay to piss off the person you're trying to buy the
club from - save that for when you need to blame the previous regime.

I suppose, in a sense, the club is better off. Ken's put none of his own

means. But to get rid of that debt, loads of people were screwed over

The Swiss Ramble came to the conclusion we're punching below our weight
under Ken, and that the profits are being spent on building work and
white elephants like Yorkshire Radio.

"If they targeted the 60% ratio adopted by Football League clubs in
Leagues One and Two, that would mean an increase of £3.1 million to
£19.6 million; if they opted for UEFA’s recommended upper limit of 70%,
that would mean an increase of £6.4 million to £22.9 million. Either of
those options would provide a budget good enough to mount a meaningful
promotion challenge, more than the two other clubs that went up in
2010/11: Norwich City £18.4 million and Swansea City £17.4 million."

"It also includes £4.6 million owed to other group companies (up from
£0.4 million the previous year), which means that money from the
football club is flowing to other companies, as opposed to being
invested in the squad. The holding company notes that £2.1 million has
gone to Yorkshire Radio."

"The cash flow statement shows that Leeds generates money at an
operating level (£9.1 million since administration), which is boosted by
£5.4 million cash from player sales, but £16.6 million has been spent on
capital projects, such as new executive boxes and lounges."

It's happened... Sudan/South Sudan, about a year ago. Held a referendum
and everything. Before that, eg Yugoslavia... now five different countries.

For some instances, you mean this one time. Normally, there's no Team GB
in Olympic football. They can't qualify because the qualifying
tournament is FIFA's under-21 competition, and there's no Team GB in
that. So, this once, because the host nation automatically qualifies,
there's a Team GB. And the worry is not that it's unfair for this one
time to pick from all of the UK (not that they can, as it's an under-23
competition), but that FIFA might try and suggest there should only be
one vote from the UK on the IFA Board (cf Blatter "why the hell do they
have four associations and four votes and their own vice-presidency?")
and the upshot of that is that a British team in FIFA/UEFA would
permanently have a vaster pool to choose from (though, to be fair, the
current SFA view is that no-one in the Scottish national team would get
in a GB one... so YMMV), and maybe three other countries would get to
vote on extra linesmen and the offside rule.

As I heard it, since a red card could only have been given for denying a
clear goal scoring opportunity, and said opportunity wasn't denied, a
red couldn't have been given.

MILLWALL have banned a supporter for 10 YEARS for goading Leeds United
fans with a Turkey flag at the New Den.

Leeds fans Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were stabbed to death in
Istanbul ahead of a UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray in 2000.

And some sick Millwall yobs taunted opposition supporters with the
Turkish flag during Saturday's 1-0 home defeat.

The Lions have worked tirelessly to keep thugs away from the club and
they have confirmed the culprit who smuggled in the flag has been banned.

Club spokesman Deano Standing said: "The man concerned was apprehended
after the match and is not welcome at our club for an entire decade. He
has been banned.

"We worked so hard with Leeds to make sure this game passed off without
trouble and it did — but the club does not condone the behaviour of a
minority of the crowd.

"It is disappointing this person got into the stadium with the flag as
there were checks in place.

"There is no place for that kind of thing at the Den."

Last April, the Championship side banned four supporters for waving
Turkish flags in their 3-2 win over Leeds.

The South London club last week warned such flags were banned from being
taken into the stadium ahead of Saturday's match.

But FA and police chiefs will be alarmed that one was being openly
paraded on the terraces.

There were also sick chants of "always look out for Turks carrying
knives" and "Istanbul" coming from the Millwall terraces.

A police spokesman said: "Millwall have banned a male for a considerable
period of time for waving Turkish flag at visiting fans."

Re: [LU] Quiet List

2012-03-13 Thread Simon Austin
I don't think you've seen enough, to be honest. Some of the games I've
been to have been truly dire - the 4-0 at Barnsley for example, or the
draw at Watford for which the term anti-football would be completely
inapplicable, because it still has the word football in it.

Of the 12 games I've been to this season before the 'Boro one... only
one was a legitimate win - the 3-0 at Doncaster. The two others we
needed red cards to help.

The surprising cup football has long gone - we may have beaten the Scum
two years ago, but they stuffed us 3-0 with Michael "Benchwarmer" Owen
at home the last time. And Arsenal's main impediment to beating us this
year was that they played Arshavin rather than someone who could shoot.

I feel Grayson was hard done by, both by Bates and by the players -
because if they can actually chase and deny space now, why they couldn't
manage it before is something of a scandal. But he's gone, and they're
doing what everyone's wanted them to do - actually put a shift in.
Whether this can be built on is a different matter (and even at 2-0 up I
still didn't feel confident on Sunday) but there's been noticeable
improvements from Portsmouth through the Southampton game to 'Boro, so I
may have to say it through gritted teeth, but Colin looks like he's
doing the right things.

3 points off I think.

I was there. We weren't brilliant. Too hesitant really. And Palace
nearly pulled off the same trick as last year, except the Ref (who was
fairly crap all over) moved the red card up to the end of the first half.

But it was an improvement on other recent matches (especially Watford,
where I began to despair I could ever enjoy football again). Even
Becchio managed to get the ball down, hold it up and pass to a team-mate
on one occasion.

Well, depends... the EU decided Sky shouldn't have a monopoly. So they
have six "packages" of premier league games spread over the weekend and
Monday night. No one broadcaster can buy all six. Originally, Setanta UK
had two of them (late Saturday and Monday night), but couldn't cover the
costs and went bust. ESPN currently have just the late Saturday game.

So... Sky no longer have a "monopoly", but they still have "exclusive"
matches and pay a massive amount to the PL. This makes everyone who
matters* happy.

(* Viewers, of course, have to pay for/get two channels if they want to
watch all the games... but eh... they're armchair fans)

Define neutral and genuine... chances are we'd sell out a Scum game
without neutrals, but you'd have to say since we're currently running

Plus, if only genuine fans can go, how will we get new ones?
Performances in those rare TV appearances have been spotty of late.

It's not modern day football. One of the better chapters in "Why England
Lose" is on the myth that the one-team fan is and has always been in the
majority. If anything, fans are more partisan these days (and Nick
Hornby's Fever Pitch is apparently one reason for that).

I do think Rich might focus a little too much on Becchio's bad points (I
picture him at games staring unblinking at the poor lad, notebook in
hand, noting every error), but he hasn't been doing much in the last
couple of games I've been to - especially as hoofing the ball
Becchio-ward seems to be one of our more popular choices. At Derby, we
became noticeably better after they'd scored and he'd been hooked off
(looking at the PA stats, we had 9 shots before the 66th minute, and 6
after - whereas Derby had 12 in total and the 12th was their goal).

And there was a rumoured strop over not starting after he came back from
his Op.

Football's somewhat of a confidence game, and I sometimes think players
and managers publically boost themselves and their teams because
otherwise they'd have to admit they were crap against poor opposition,
and then they'd get worse because against a crap team you should get
more shots/goals/possession/corners/applause/crowd noise. Or maybe their
plan was to crowd and stifle Snodgrass, and that because that worked
they were happy, ignoring the depressing football that remained.

You're kind of muddying the waters there... one act does not make you an
-ist. And as Liverpool noted, Evra and the FA explicitly said Suarez is
not a racist.

What Suarez has been found guilty of is breaking rule E3(1) "A
Participant shall at all times act in the best interests of the game and
shall not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into
disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious
foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or
behaviour" and E3(2) "including a reference to any one or more of a
person’s ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, faith, gender, sexual
orientation or disability".

It's difficult to argue he didn't do that. Though a cynical view might
be if E3(1) was followed to the letter, most teams would have difficulty
fielding a side.

I don't think so much we were hammered, more both team were awful, but
Watford just about shaded it. We couldn't string two passes together,

Watford player next. They just played on the counter, and packed the
midfield. By the middle of the second half it was a game of
volleyball... I don't think anyone enjoyed it, and even the Watford fans
were leaving early. If football were covered by "statutory rights", we
should all be refunded the ticket price and both clubs deducted points.

Other than that though, it was a fun day.

A lot of that is because you're not in the US though. The NFL don't even
sell an Internet video feed to Americans (and will blackout local TV
channels if the game doesn't sell out). You can't watch your local team
on MLB.TV - even if they're not at home or the game isn't being shown on
proper TV. The NBA and NHL do something similar.

Even if the League were to want to sort out live broadcasts of every
Championship club (ignoring the relegation issue), the actual
availability in the UK probably wouldn't change.

As an attempt at extending the worth of games at the end of the season
they seem to work, though I think they could be improved to make
finishing third more of an advantage than it currently is. You can make
things too complicated there and there are some godawful play-off
systems around... consider the Belgian top division:

"A play-off phase is then played from March to May. The top 6 teams from
the regular season enter the play-offs 1, with each team playing their
opponents twice. The point system in the play-offs 1 is the same as
during the regular season, except that each team starts with half of the
points they won in the regular season. Points are rounded up to the
nearest integer. At the end of the play-offs 1, the first-placed team
becomes the champion of Belgium. If some teams are level in the ranking,
any points added due to rounding are first withdrawn from their total
points if applicable, before other criteria are taken into account.

"Teams ranked 7 to 14 after the regular season enter the play-offs 2,
with teams ranked 7th, 9th, 12th and 14th entering the group A and teams
ranked 8th, 10th, 11th and 13th entering the group B. In each group,
each team plays each of its 3 opponents twice. The winner of each group
plays the final game in two legs, to determine the winner of the
play-offs 2. The winner of the play-offs 2 then plays a home and away
game against either the fourth-placed or fifth-placed team from the
play-offs 1 for the final Europa League ticket, with the opponent
depending on the fact if the Belgian Cup winner ended in the top four of
the play-off 1 or not.

"Team ranked 15th and 16th after the regular season enter the relegation
play-off. It consists of 5 games between the 2 teams. The 15th-placed
team starts the play-offs with 3 points whereas the 16th-placed team
starts from zero. The loser of the relegation play-off is relegated to
the second division. The winner of that play-off enters the Belgian
Second Division Final Round
 with
3 teams from the second division. The winner of this Final Round plays
in the First Division the season thereafter."

Re: [LU] QPR

They signed a player, Alejandro Faurlin, but someone else owned some of
his "economic rights" (whatever they are), and they didn't tell the FA
about it until they wanted to buy them back, which is against the rules
that were brought in after Tevez fuss. They also may have paid money to
an unlicensed agent, and may have tried to hide the third party
situation when Faurlin signed a contract extension.

This all makes Faurlin ineligible for some of his time at QPR, and
playing ineligible players usually means a points deductions (Torquay
and Hereford both lost points this season for doing it in 1 game,
supposedly by accident) and Faurlin has played at least 80 games since
he was signed.

Re: [LU] Oh dear....

2011-03-26 Thread Simon Austin
A little googling... and from http://www.askasoccerreferee.com/?p=270
and http://www.corshamref.org.uk/offhist.htm the offside rule in 1971 was...

A player is offside if he is nearer his opponents’ goal line than
the ball at the moment the ball is played unless:
   (a) He is in his own half of the field of play,
   (b) There are two of his opponents nearer to their own goal-line
   than he is.
   (c) The ball last touched an opponent or was last played by him.
   (d) He receives the ball direct from a goal kick, a corner kick, a
throw-in, or when it was dropped by the referee.
Punishment: For an infringement of this Law, an indirect free kick
shall be taken by a player of the opposing team from the place where
   the infringement occurred.
A player in the offside position shall not be penalized unless, in
the opinion of the referee, he is interfering with the play or with
an opponent, or is seeking to gain an advantage by being in an
   offside position.

And

   1. Off-side shall not be judged at the moment the player in question
receives the ball, but at the moment when the ball is passed to him
by one of his own side. A player who is not in an off-side position
when one of his colleagues passes the ball to him or takes a
free-kick, does not therefore become off-side if he goes forward
during the flight of the ball.
A player does not necessarily infringe this Law if he is in an
off-side position and moves a little way beyond the boundary of the
field of play to show clearly to the referee that he is not
interfering with play, but if the referee considers that such a
movement has a tactical aim, or is, in any way, a feint and the
player takes part in the game immediately after, then the referee
should blow his whistle for ' off-side.'

I can't be sure what the exact wording of the offside rule was in 1971, but
I assume that, barring the whole 'interfering with play' thing, it was
largely the same as it is now. So, bearing in mind that the definition of
what exactly constitutes being in an 'offside position' might have changed,
then a player only needs to be in an offside position when one of his
teammates *touches* the ball to be considered offside. Astle was certainly
in an offside position when his teammate intercepted (i.e. 'touched') the
ball, so he was offside. Its as simple as that isn't it?

Re: [LU] NonLU: 2030, not 2026

2010-12-02 Thread Simon Austin
The rotation was dropped, but there are still limitations. When a
country wins, any other country from the same federation is blocked from
bidding for the next two. That meant only Asia, Oceania, North America
and Europe could bid for 2018 - but only the USA was willing to go up
against European countries, until they pulled out to compete for 2022,
when they felt they had a better chance without having the compete with
any European countries.

Not so. The rota system was canned in 2007. Each tournament is open to bidding,
as we have just seen.

Mark

2030 actually - there's a rota that means 2026 will go somewhere other than
Europe.

Only every 3rd tournament is now due to be held on this continent, instead of alternate tournaments as it was until 2006.<<

England's home games are on the "crown jewels" list and have to be
shown on terrestrial. Away games are sold by the away FA and can go to
anyone. The highlights are then sold on by the buyer, and sometimes they
charge too much.
