LL:DDV: Socialist Alliance trade union pamphlet lanuch
You are invited to attend a general meeting for trade union members in Socialist Alliance. Tuesday 30 September, 6.00pm. Upstairs, John Curtin Hotel, 29 Lygon St, Carlton Socialist Alliance has many members who are active unionists. Our caucuses in the NTEU and AEU are starting to make a real impact. There are good possibilities for the Left as shown in recent victories by SA members and other left candidates in union elections. We have an essential role in building union consciousness among workers and developing militant trade unions. The meeting will launch our new trade union pamphlet, which is an invaluable aid to any union activist. There will be three agenda items: 1. Launch of the trade union pamphlet by John Cummins (CFMEU) and Louise Walker (NTEU) 2. Report on progress of Socialist Alliance trade union work nationally 3. Plans for how we organise our trade union work in Victoria The meeting should take about one and half to two hours depending on the discussion. It would be great to see as many as possible of our union members there to share experiences and develop a good plan for our union work. We are also organising a trade union seminar for 1.00-5.00pm on Saturday 18 October at the MUA rooms in West Melbourne. The title will be ``Seminar for unionists: getting organised. LL:DDV: Socialist Alliance Trade Union Meeting
SOCIALIST ALLIANCE TRADE UNION SOLIDARITY COMMITTEE 6 November 2002 Dear Comrade As you may or may not be aware, a great step has been taken toward socialist unity through the formation of the Socialist Alliance. Eight separate socialist organisations have put aside their differences in order to build Socialist Alliance. Already it has branches throughout Australia and a total membership of more than 2500. The Victorian Socialist Alliance has set up the Trade Union Solidarity Committee. It aims to provide a forum for unionists from all unions to come together and swap experiences and develop strategies and perspectives for taking the movement forward. We plan to hold regular monthly meetings that aim to both organise and educate. If you would like to be notified of our meetings please ring Simon Millar on 9386 5917 or email [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we will place you on our contact list. LL:DDV: Flo Russell - Scattering of her ashes
Flo Russell, long time political activist who joined the Communist Party of Australia in the 1930s and was later elected to the central committee in the 1950s, who was also a founding member of the Communist Party of Australia (Marxist Leninist), has died in Melbourne in March 2002, aged 91 years. On Saturday 1 June at 12 noon we will scatter Flo's ashes on the Yarra Bank at Speakers Corner. Afterwards, please join us for a bite to eat or a coffee at the Botannical Gardens, another of Flo's favourite places. The Yarra Bank area where Speakers Corner used to be is next to the recently opened Birrarung Marr Park, on what was Batman Avenue. It is on the north bank of the Yarra and to the west of the Rod Laver arena. It is very different now because of all the redevelopment down there and the Exhibition Street Extension. Please see Melways Map 2F K6 or UBD Map 253 L16. Failing that give either Maureen (9663 9439) Maree (9687 7686) or Mick (9478 4526) a ring. Hope to see you then, where all Flo's family, friends and comrades can give her a big farewell. -- Leftlink - Australia's Broad Left Mailing List mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archived at http://www.cat.org.au/lists/leftlink/ Sponsored by Melbourne's New International Bookshop Subscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=subscribe%20leftlink Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20leftlink

LL:INFO: Marx's CAPITAL reading/study group
13 June 2001 Dear Comrades I have several friends who are interested in starting up a reading group on Karl Marx's CAPITAL. We are all women, have been around left political circles for a long time but do not belong to any political party. I am posting this proposal to see if there are any interested people out there in the left who would be interested in joining a small reading/study group. Initial thoughts for a reading/study group are: Chapter 1, Sections 1 - 4, Capital: Critique of Political Economy. The basic ideas and concepts of Capital are introduced in this first chapter. Depending on the level of interest, we could either move further into Capital and study it at greater depth; OR we could study the development of capitalism as described by Marx in the Communist Manifesto. The future direction of the reading group would have to be planned out from there, but it would be good to see how what we read in Capital helps us understand the changes that are taking place in the economic and political spheres today. Therefore we could look at globalisation and its impacts; and the anti-capitalist movement which has developed in response. If you are female or male; socialist, anarchist or other; and are interested, or would like more details, please email me I will get back to you.
