Re: Art Ransom
Since i don't come here often, i just read of Art's passing. I can't tell you how long ago it was, since it's been that long but I recall when Art and I started this group many many years ago. I think it was on yahoo first...anyway we were both looking for help for our new toys, these ornamental mills and thru the magic of this new thing called "the internet" we started talking, sharing tips and tricks...(rather, him teaching me!) and we figured there had to be others like us who were frustrated at the lack of technical help from Legacy (I still don't know how they stayed in business?) But we plugged along till we started meeting others like Mike and Curtis, ect. Art was like that favorite old uncle you liked to go hang out with in his workshop because you were never sure of what neat thing he would come up with next. Well all i can say is...he must be in good company because Jesus was a carpenter (woodworker) too...God Bless him... myxpykalix On Thursday, September 18, 2014 7:13:43 PM UTC-4, LILtwisted wrote: > > It is with a heavy heart that I inform the group that we have lost a > friend. I'm in Charlottesville. If you are who i think you are, didn't you come to my house and i showed you my 900? I sold it by the way and now have room for a small cnc in that room. I didn't realize there was not going to be a chantilly show till after the baltimore show had come and gone so there is nothing close to me on the east coast. Oh well...i hated going anyway cuz i'd walk up the isles going..."got it, got it, got it, don't want it, got it, got it..." so there wasn't anything new that i didn't already have. I'm sitting here looking at a kreg jig still in the bag where i bought it last year at the show and have never used it yet! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Legacy Ornamental Mills" group. Re: Trim Your Posts
Hi, Thanks for that info and reminder about the woodworking shows. I try to always go to the one in DC which is a bit closer to me then Baltimore. To your point, since i have talked to other users of other machines you generally will get a more honest appraisal of the machine, customer service and usability from customers rather then from a salesman. I'm familiar with CNC's and file creation programs some which are shared by many different mfg's (like vectric products) but I guess more to what i'm looking for is how their cutting strategies differ from others or how the users like to use say Conversational Cam or mach3 for example. Re: Trim Your Posts
THANK YOU JESUS!! HALLELUAH! I have been preaching that and doing that for years and frankly is one reason I don't read this forum much is because the replies get lost inbetween the repeated text and make it very frustrating to try to decypher but then again what do you expect from a bunch of "Old Farts"! (right Curtis?) I wish the google group used a different format to separate the various responses without automatically including the text. On another subject i'm thinking of getting another small cnc, maybe a desktop or something a bit bigger and wondered if anyone had some info on the cutting strategies employed by either mach3 or conversational cam? I don't want to talk to legacy direct yet but they act like they are keeping atomic bomb secrets where you can't get any useful information to compare to others. I like the way you can cut symetrical profiles in a spinning lathe type cutting they use rather then the "bumping" rotation carving (one degree at a time) along the profile i'm doing now. It is a lot faster. And i thought some of you might have some heads up on that? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Legacy Ornamental Mills" group. Tim, What i need, if it isn't a hassle, is a straight down shot of the lid, as if you are looking down on it from the floor. What i can then do is copy the flat face of the top in my design program and copy all the contours and designs and can probably make an exact copy. Re: birdmouth joints
Tim, Hi buddy, i haven't been here in a while but I downloaded your calculator because i am going to be making some columns for a project and this would come in handy. But here is my question. I have just a plain old craftsman tablesaw and i don't have the ability to set my saw angle to (for example 11.25 degrees) dictated by the other input info, because its not that accurate with just a wheel and marked gauge on face. So what i want to know is there a way to set the angle (because it is a protected cel) to get a better angle on the saw? I know that will change the other deminsions. I just don't have that fine of adjustment on my saw, or am i obsessing over these settings where 11 or 12 degrees would be ok? My reasoning is that I can sacrifice and make it thicker if the calculator gave me a even degree number because i can always cut the thickness down after its glued. I hope i made myself clear not sure i explained it right. thanks I'm really need to add the thickness factor. I just realized how quick the spreadsheet could make some of my segmented turnings go. I usually use cad to make a quick plan or I use a sizing jig I made before cutting segments on my table saw. > > -Tim --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Legacy Ornamental Mills" group. Re: Rich's Indexer Wizards
Rich, If I understand correctly a standalone version would be advantageous to me, who does not use the legacy or mach3 but a shopbot. When we last spoke Shopbot did not have the ability to translate A,B moves in its software from files that were created within mach3. It now has that ability. So I could see how Shopbot users could take advantage of this and it would open it up to use by other users. Forgive me since i don't recall but do your wizards use the center of the material for its Zzero? If so I would recommend you set your wizards to be able to Zero of the material surface. I found in my spiral wizard regardless of diameter I could just zero to surface and make spirals much more quickly and not have to do a lot of math for each piece. This saves time if you are doing ballusters and repeated with material that isn't all the same size. I also set it up so that you could divide the toolpath depth of cut in two. Half depth in the way down the cylinder and half on the way back. That helped so as not to cut in one pass too deep, especially when you try to do hollow spirals. This sounds interesting so keep us informed and if you need anyone to test toolpaths i'd volunteer. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Legacy Ornamental Mills" group. Re: Anyone want to sell OM5 software?
"Hooligan, can you please expand on your statement that conversational forms don't work? > I don't remember all the details but I sent them a list of some 8 problems > which they never acknowledged or fixed.. I don't want to comeoff as a prick but this company has a long history of not following thru with fixes and customer support and this sadly is just another example. If there is 10 people who are using them sucessfully please chime in and say so and I will admit I was wrong but based on all the complaints i've read i'd be surprised. Re: Anyone want to sell OM5 software?
I have 2 suggestions...first talk to Rich Goldner and see if this is something he would want to take on. If not then here is what I did, I went to http://www.rentacoder.com and talked to a guy who helped me write an application that i use to make spirals and other designs using a designed interface and basically is a standalone program. I spent around $200.00 for this guys time to help me with about 15 different versions and upgrades till we got it right. Since this is run under mach3 and all you cnc guys with your legacys run mach3 then it seems like if you know what this om5 is supposed to do you can get one of these programmers to build you something from scratch as I did. Even if you spent $1000.00 to have it done then divvy it up between (X) number of you guys and it will cost less than you paid for those conversational forms (that don't work). Has anyone here bought one of those expensive routers they sell and gotten the software and does it work? I haven't heard of anyone who is a satisfied customer and is using it in the field has anyone here heard? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Legacy Ornamental Mills" group.
