Re: Ornamental Mills Around the World

2016-10-26 Thread CURTIS GEORGE
Good morning Mark.
And Welcome to the Group. ;-)
The Legacy Ornamental mill is a very good machine for a lot of different jobs.
With your funeral business, the Old world / classical look is what most people
want to see, things like roped and fluted candle holders and turned idioms that
are not part of today's modern life stile. is what most people want to see. I
think that the Legacy could be a very useful tool for your business.
I would think you could use the Legacy for ax cent pieces.
For an example my first job on the Legacy, was to re-turn a set of table legs,
bought at a trade show.
The man bought a new hard wood table, with square legs, (a Chinese knock off
,made to look , country stile ) The man's wife did not like the look of the
table and would not have it in there house... I was paid to round off the legs,
and to add a small roped section onto each leg of this table. (matching more or
less something else already in there home.) This job only took me a short time
to do, and Made the lady of the house very happy with there new table. ;-)
So you can see, I did not have to make the legs, only add details onto what
someone had already made. The Legacy is very good at doing some things like
that.

I like to say, its the Art est that makes the art, not the machine. But it dose
take a little bit of both the man and the machine to make something worth
while.
Again I would like to welcome you to the LOM users group.
And I look forward to talking to you some more in the future.
Have a good day.

Good evening:

We have a woodshop that is part of our funeral supply business. We have three
FT people making urns, flag cases, easels, crosses and crucifixes, and other
wood products that are sold to funeral homes across the U.S.

One of our pieces of equipment is a Model 900 Legacy Ornamental Mill. I don't
think we are using it to its full capacity. It's kind of a niche machine for
us. For example, we make an easel with three legs that mount to a center
column. We use the Legacy to cut three surfaces where the legs are mounted at
exactly the right place. People get into the habit of using a particular
technique or machine, without considering the other machines we have in our
shop. So we are looking forward to learning more.

Anyway, we are located in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, so if we could get a pin for
our location on the map, that would be great!

Re: Ornamental Mills Around the World

2016-03-27 Thread 'llossi' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Thanks Tim,
I've not done anything extraordinary to brag about...just flattening stock,
some barley spindles, and simple bowls on the rotary table, but like most
Legacy owners, I've got a vivid imagination for future projects. Square and
flat are nice element features but creating something in the round (or
eccentric) takes us to another level most woodworkers are intimated by. The
Legacy allows us to explore that next level. As I'm getting older, I'm
scaling down my projects these days as furniture is getting heavier and
heavier. I really enjoy reading all the contributory posts by the members
here as there is a wealth of knowledge and experience that is generously
volunteered.
My time is a little short this morning but I plan on contributing more
posts in the future.
Thanks,
Lou

Re: Ornamental Mills Around the World

2014-10-14 Thread Tim Krause
Hello All,

Some good news to report. I did get in touch with the developer of the map
program we used. The short version is the service is gone for good. The
possible good news is his program was an overlay based on a Google Map API. If
you don't what that means, the good news is I do. The bad news is I need to
roll my own version which may or may not be easy. I did get him to release the
data that was stored so I have all of the members information that did post
their location. On the bad news side, there might be a fee to pay Google, but
I don't think it will apply to our low use. I'm still holding out hopes that
there is a map application already out there.

  Tim,
I agree with Bill. Thanks to the map, I know there are a couple LOM owners
within about 100 miles of me (I'm in northern Virginia, USA about 30 minutes
south od Washington, DC.) I think the closest owner is in Culpeper, VA.
I'll keep my eyes out for an app that would be a suitable replacement.

There is no way at this time to recover the data. I will look for a
replacement service or code to generate our own map that is in our control. If
anyone knows of an online service, please let me know,

Tim,I agree with Bill. Thanks to the map, I know there are a couple LOM owners within about 100 miles of me (I'm in northern Virginia, USA about 30 minutes south od Washington, DC.) I think the closest owner is in Culpeper, VA. I'll keep my eyes out for an app that would be a suitable replacement.Mac-Original Message-

Re: Ornamental Mills Around the World

2013-09-26 Thread mostlycold
Hi Mac,

I did place an order with Chris around the first part of September. Both
he and Cindy advised that it would be 4-6 weeks to build and another week
to ship to Alaska (and then whatever it takes for the sleddogs to get it
from the dock to my house :). Have since found out that I probably won't
be able to get a template kit (sold out and don't know if they are going to
make anymore). I'm still confused how to get my hands on a template
follower (looks like the only way to make that swan neck molding for the
clock)? Guess I'll be own my own through some of this but appreciate the
groups expertise on the manual mills. Will keep everyone posted on how
things unfold. Anyone got advice on whether I should throw down for the
magnate professional bit set on the ornamental mill? Site says the
assortment has most of the profiles used in the training and product videos.

Thanx,
Dan

 Hello Jeff
Legacy said that thay would give him A evolution, I dont think there
was any number attached. Im sure if someone was going to offer to pay for
one, Legacy would rather sell it before giving one away. (After all its
only been? what? a few Monthy, since thay told the goup that thay were going
to give Tim a new Evo.)

Hopefully Tim will have his unit soon, Im realy waiting to hear how this
unit handles before I make up my mind... Those Liner barings are nice,
but Will thay clog up with saw dust? How dependable is this new Z axis and
will these two new pivit points on the Z axis??? I understand what thay
are doing, but I think thay look like they could offer more problems than
 thay
solve. And Lastly cost vs size. Is it worth it? giving up the abilty to
turn 60+ to be limited to only 48...

I see it very much like buying a new car. (first year runs, most often

RE: Ornamental Mills Around the World

2013-09-26 Thread Bill Bulkeley
Short answer yes as I think magnate bits are very good and that set is a
good start also a very good company to deal with buy direct from them, and
without going into lots of detail you can never have enough router bits but
if i was starting again I would buy an extra surface planning bit as it is
the most used bit of them all that's my 2cents worth anyway

Hi Mac,

I did place an order with Chris around the first part of September. Both he
and Cindy advised that it would be 4-6 weeks to build and another week to
ship to Alaska (and then whatever it takes for the sleddogs to get it from
the dock to my house :). Have since found out that I probably won't be
able to get a template kit (sold out and don't know if they are going to
make anymore). I'm still confused how to get my hands on a template follower
(looks like the only way to make that swan neck molding for the clock)?
Guess I'll be own my own through some of this but appreciate the groups
expertise on the manual mills. Will keep everyone posted on how things
unfold. Anyone got advice on whether I should throw down for the magnate
professional bit set on the ornamental mill? Site says the assortment has
most of the profiles used in the training and product videos.

Thanx,

Dan

Hello Jeff
Legacy said that thay would give him A evolution, I dont think there was
any number attached. Im sure if someone was going to offer to pay for one,
Legacy would rather sell it before giving one away. (After all its only been?
what? a few Monthy, since thay told the goup that thay were going to give Tim a
new Evo.)

Hopefully Tim will have his unit soon, Im realy waiting to hear how this
unit handles before I make up my mind... Those Liner barings are nice, but Will
thay clog up with saw dust? How dependable is this new Z axis and will these
two new pivit points on the Z axis??? I understand what thay are doing, but I
think thay look like they could offer more problems than thay
solve. And Lastly cost vs size. Is it worth it? giving up the abilty to
turn 60+ to be limited to only 48...

I see it very much like buying a new car. (first year runs, most often have
lots of bugs that still need to be worked out.)

I would like to hear an un-biest acount. that's all.

I'm one of the Oregonians just sitting back(so to speak) trying to get into
retirement. Sure don't know when I had time to work. The best part is have have
two LOM's a 1200 with no updates but every accessory Legacy sold about 10 years
ago us several magnate bits and then recently I purchased the upgrade 1800 that
was in Bend OR. My intent is to sell the 1200 with only has a few hours on it
and modify the 1800 with linear bearing as one of the other guys did. Sorry I
don't have his name here but a brilliant job he did. I have 96 rails and
bearings plus access to more if needed.

So consider this an announce of 1200 for sale. Will send details and photos if
anyone in the group is interested. I considered parting out the 1200 but need
to recoup about $1800 for all.

Good Morning Tim and the rest of
the group.

Thanks for the "tease"
to get me started with making a post or two. It's not that I have been too shy
to post anything I have been a bit overwhelmed with the Aspire software and
Mach3 software that I need to learn to use prior to playing with the new / old
1200. I did purchase a few small pieces of cheap wood last night so hopefully I
will find the time and courage to at least make some saw dust this weekend.

I'll let the group know how it
goes provided I get a chance play with itOn Thursday, April 4, 2013 12:50:11 PM UTC-5, Tim wrote:

RE: Ornamental Mills Around the World

2013-04-06 Thread Bill Bulkeley
I think it would be easiest to drill it in the wood lathe first then
transfer to the mill for the rest

But after saying that anything is possible on a legacy mill

if you have a Morse taper in the mills tailstock and you motorize the head
stock (I have done this) then you could drill the hole just like on a lathe

Or mount a electric drill horizontal to the saddle on centre height and
drill the hole.

Or mount the router horizontally like on a 90degree angle plate and router
the hole I have done most of these things on the mill, but if you're not
into doing any modifying to your mill drill the hole on the wood lathe first
. remember the headstock hub of the mill will fit in most wood lathes too so
its easy to swap from one to the other

I do a lot of sanding of my legacy projects in the wood lathe this way

You problably could with the right bit. You also could use a core box bit to
make a grove and fold it together, they made a flute like that in one of the

That a great idea I plan to use when working with two different kind of
wood. Occasionally I will get a request to make a call combining Cocobolo
and Osage Orange. It does make a unique call and gives the user the best of
both woods. Thanks for the information!
