If that does not work, I can supply however many dogs you would like. Did Joe B. sell all of the split nuts he made this summer? RE: Need LOM dogs and split nut
OK, to me, simple is drilling for a 1” dowel and cut it off after. No money spend. Should have enough scrap to do this without leaving the shop. With the face plate, you would only need one. Flat piece of plywood with 4 cleats to hold the leg like a “wrench on a bolt”. They slip in and out instantly and held in with tailstock. Or one piece of flat plywood with a lag bolt screwed through it and mount on faceplate. Lots of NTI (nothing to it :>) ways. Re: Need LOM dogs and split nut
Hello Joe most of the Legacy's that I have seen have a MT-2 as well as a 1x8 thread on the head-stock/spindle. This means most of the lathe adapters you own should fit the Legacy, the MT-1 is to small for the Legacy, but you can buy MT 1-2 adapters at any machine shop supply house, they are not expensive. RE: Need LOM dogs and split nut
You are on the money Bill. The LOM uses the 1”-8TPI headstock with the #2 morse taper almost always, **apparently even yours Jon **. The #1 and #2 tapers are not interchangeable. There might be a #2 to #1 adaptor but don’t bother. The #2 is most common among most wood lathes and LOM’s. You have a 3 choices that comes to mind. 1) You can buy a larger chuck at about $200 or more 2) you can purchase the Penn State industries’ economy chuck ( <https://www.pennstateind.com/store/CUG3418CCX.html> https://www.pennstateind.com/store/CUG3418CCX.html ) for $90 . It comes with a larger flat jaw set you could adapt for your use. 3) If you already have a smaller jaw chuck (Check? :>), you can drill a 1” hole in the end of your stock and glue a 1” dowel ( or less, size doesn’t matter) in it. This can then be used to hold the headstock end of the leg in your chuck. After finishing, cut the dowel off flush. The Penn state chuck comes with a lag screw so you could even drill a proper size hole in the leg and screw the leg on to lag screw (I guess this is kinda #4 choice :>). I really like my Penn State Chuck and rarely use the LOM dogs these days. There are a couple of other solutions that would be more complicated that I could suggest if you want, but these 3 (4) are your easiest possibilities as I see it. Re: Need LOM dogs and split nut
I was playing with a design with the spiral but decided the spiral was too fancy for a farm table. Also the "beads" below the spiral were too big so I went with the plain taper. Sure wish I could score the old Legacy "design kit" I have trouble visualizing what a cutter looks like with partial or full cutting depth. Re: Need LOM dogs and split nut
Hello again Joe do you still have the old split nut? Its just the upper half you need? If so I may be some help for you. I own a home made tap for the 5/8 x 4 acme screw. I can tap a piece of durlin (SP?) plastic for you, then you can cut it to fit... Please let me know if you still need help on this? more latter. I have an older steel rail LOM and have recently begun to use it again. I need at least two of the 4 prong dogs that fit the headstock mad will also need a split nut in the future for the 5/8 acme. Any help will be appreciated since I see Legacy no longer supports the older LOM s and have also taken down the old training videos. RE: Need LOM dogs and split nut
5/8th acme was used on my 1200 with aluminum rails. They still sold the split nut for mine (should be the same) as of a couple of months ago. Hope this helps.
