Re: Woodworking show
Hi Bill The fact of the matter is that the Evolution did not sell! Why did it not sell was partially because of the price of $3,000.00 and that was where it was because it was designed to be CNC up-gradable. Now maybe Andy got that wrong, personally I think he was correct and I was a strong advocate of that feature. What we forgot at the time was that the low cost CNC market was growing, hence why the Explorer sells well, and that was where Legacy has to be and the cost of an Explorer is on the face of it an extra $1,000 or so. Actually people forget that you need a PC, software and “the knowledge to drive the system” so it is not for everyone and that leaves an opportunity for someone to come to market with a manual machine. If I was twenty years younger I might have had a go but my sights are currently set on moving house in the next few weeks and working out how to get the contents of my 20’ by 20’ garage into a wooden workshop 10’ by 12’, now that is a design problem. I young gentleman was teaching and a nice lady was running the CNC demo. so I was not able to talk shop with the Big Dawgs today. But On the good sides I was able to watch and pick up a lot of neat stuff,. For you CNC Guys there were 4 other CNC sellers doing demos and selling there stuff. and all had the ability to do spindles, although not in the same scale as Legacy has now, but If you ask me Legacy kn itch is getting much smaller, in the CNC field, But on a good note No ONE was doing spindles or could conpeat with the Legacy manual machines A primitive model 600 or 900 I think would do well in todays market. AND I realy think that Legacy should try a up-graded there model 200 again, The pen turning market was huge this year. (just my 2 cents worth of it. Just in case, Legacy is still looking at this web page/group posting .) ;-) I did get the " Intelligent Woodworking pamplet" that Legacy was giving away, (I will get it copied for all here to see latter.) Todays Big sales ,or draws for me were , Ron Brown from brown's best (top knot-ch turner and salesman. his chatter, knelling ,and texturing tools were impressive. ) Carter tools, sales people also were also entertaining and informative . Packard woodworks has a lot of neat stuff ! , Woodline has a very nice 1 1/2" carbide planing cutter with interchangeable/replaceable square cut carbides, Very KOOL in my book. (It was $75.00 at the show. ) (I did not buy it this year, but I think it would be a good deal for the Legacy in the long-run.) Also a note on SteelStamp and Brands-first (custom made branding irons.) Arbortech (grinding and carving wheels) and Hannes tool (lathe tools.) were all very good. Epilog Laser was very nice, but way out-side my woodworking interests. (things that I make or want to make at this min. But none the less Neat stuff.) Over all today was a lot of fun. Thanks Bill. I keep telling my self that I needed $1000.00 to spend to buy some of the good stuff. ( Perhaps I will win one of the door praises ?) ;-) But-, most of the stuff that I like, started at $175.00 and up. If anyone had a lathe or Legacy that would sell for $1000.00 or less I would think it would sell. I think a small legacy like a 200 with a Y axis could do very well in this market today. C.A.G. Re: Woodworking show
Hi Curt That young gentleman was John Hennen for your information, as to who the young lady was I cannot tell from here but was she cutting out parts on the CNC for Intarsia, if so I know who it could be. You also commented that other CNC manufacturers were there with rotary capability BUT WERE THEIR MACHINES MADE IN USA? And I mean manufactured there not just bought in from China and labelled up made in USA. I agree there is a good market for a re-engineered Model 200 but what diameter and length between centres do you want and what would you pay? Ron Brown offers some nice products, I have some of his tools and talk with him regularly. Glad you enjoyed your day out. Re: Woodworking Show Schedule
Mac, I like your explanation; however, I think there is an economic explanation which is not as colorful. Lie-Nelson no longer attends WW shows but now has their own shows at locations around the US and Canada. I assumed that the downturn in the economy was the main problem, but I was informed that the exhibitor charges were too high and they were not getting sufficient return to justify the expense. Also, and to my dismay, I was told that a considerable number of their tools were stolen at the shows. There are a number of other former exhibitors that are no-shows at the WW shows. I did not go to the Baltimore show (there being no show in Chantilly this year) after reviewing the list of exhibitors. I would have made the trip if Legacy had their Evolution machine there, but Denver is a little far for me to go for that machine.
