Hey Dan,

Yes that is an absolutely beautiful LOM turning combo.
I really appreciate the fact you left the color original and let the beauty
of the wood show.
Nice job. Do you have any local woodworking shows you will be showing it?
I'd like to see another picture with the bud glass and flower in it.
Thanks for sharing some of your work.

Also for this New members, here is a link to our old archives.
https://ornamentalmills.com/turningaround/index.html  Just go to the photo and
click on it to start reading some of the old topic.   Its a lot of fun, and I
personally have used this for a good deal of info. or as+ a refresher for new
ideas. (sorta like a spin-off, Something Old becomes, New again .)The New
archives are not as easy to excise as the old one where ,(mainly due to the
size and amount of info, in it.)But I hope the goal can still be used by
others, who want to re-read or look up a topic that we have talked about in the
past.
I'm going to bed now, talk to you all more tomorrow.Have a good night.

We realize we all have things we want to ask about, contribute to The Group,

If some of the discussions set your creative juices flowing and you want to
bring up an off-topic thought - feel free to do so when ever you want.  Just
PLEASE start it by giving it a "SUBJECT" line that will best represent the meat

Our reason for asking this is that it will make it MUCH EASIER for a Group
member to search back through The Group's archives to find previous discussions
related to your topic.

Hopefully one of our Group members (Tim K., Mike P., or Curtis?) will chime in
and further discuss our Archives, how to search through them, etc. - and the
importance of the above request.

They will (hopefully) provide us with a hyperlink to the archives - making it
easy for all of us to access them and conduct searches.

One other admin request:  When replying to a subject - please cut off all the
"unnecessary stuff" relative to your reply/input - usually found towards the
end of the email.  A good example being:  "You received this message because

I lost track of this auction and it was closed by the time I wanted to check back.Did anyone on here buy it?  I'm wondering what someone would do with such a large machine.  I get columns and all but would it be an all around user or more of a specialty mill.RayOn Thu, Nov 19, 2020 at 10:56 PM Tim Ziegler <timjz...@gmail.com> wrote:Yea better start ckg in with people for sure. Kind Regards,Timothy J. Re: Face Book Marketplace posting of a 8ft. Legacy LOM

2020-11-30 Thread Ray Leaman
Joe,

Been going thru your facebook page for the past couple of hours. Your shop
(or shops if you will) is/are amazing. Spent most of the time perusing
your legacy ornamental mill posts and comments. As others here have, that
mill (actually two mills) of yours is as amazing as billed. I see what you
meant by building a box support for a mill. The three 8' sliding box
sections for your 16' mill look strong. A wealth of information for
ornamental mill owners.
Just started to look at the Finials Unlimited section of your business as I
was about to leave the site. Again amazing. The history of your gathering
some of these items from other crafts men/women(?) over the years needs to
be preserved somehow. It looks like a lot of articles have been written on
your business over the years but some of your stuff belongs in the
Metropolitan Art Museum in the furniture curated section or somewhere.
Really.
I will be going back to your site again and again. Too much to take in in
one sitting. Thanks.

Ray

hey Ray... here's a page from our first catalog we did back in the late 80's showing a selection of curtain pole styles... note the harlequinn in the center(#712)... all can be done on a legacy-type machine...the tree branch(#721) was a hand carved specialty... and the length is quite often used in residential homes in places in the south and midwest(Texas! has some huge homes with huge rooms!... LOL!)...  in regards to the roller chain setup, there is no CNC setup on my machine... it is strictly a manually operated machine... I felt the roller chain and counter weight was necessary because the router mount  with the rotary/tilt table was beginning to weigh a good amount... and even though the Z axis was on linear bearings and several thrust bearings were installed, it still took a lot to crank the crank the handle to raise and lower the router assembly... add to that I have a drill press attachment and a hollow chisel attachment that can easily be swapped out with the router, but due to the projection of each piece,  the laws of physics really put a strain on the Z axis tower assembly... so the counter balance setup was necessary... it is adjustable by adding or removing metal bars on the backside... good news was that, once balanced, it was so light to the touch, that I can consider doing template work with a router bit in the 12 o'clock position and the router going up and down when following a template... bad news was that I had to put in a way to lock the Z axis travel as any small vibration would turn the hand crank wheel!... LOL!... an easy fix but a bit of a PITA to work with... anyway, check out the facebook page and if there are any questions, please ask... also, I do have the Legacy CNC upgrade kit, as originally sold by Legacy(it came with the used 1800 I purchased), but was never installed(still in its original packing)... I myself do not understand the programming aspect of using the CNC and I certainly would not expect any of my men could operate the CNC... thus the reason to keep the machine in its manual mode... are you setting up your Legacy with CNC equipment?... regards... Joe B.

Re: Face Book Marketplace posting of a 8ft. Legacy LOM

2020-11-30 Thread 'joe biunno' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
I was understanding that the "standard" Legacy CNC upgrade package had
servo motors that were connected directly to the Acme lead screws on the
X,Y and Z axis and the headstock... the "performance" package was a rack
and pinion setup that basically replaced the acme screws on the X and Y
axis, while the Z axis remained on its acme threaded rod... the problem was
that being hooked up the acme rods wasn't quite fast enough to suit a CNC
user's speed requirements... the rack and pinion made a big enough
difference to warrant the switch... especially if you had an 1800 or larger
Legacy machine... Joe B.

I'll certainly study your facebook entries. And, I'll want to know more
about the interchangeability of your drill press and mortising setups.

You sometimes can make (I know I have) more problems with what was a
great solution, The easy glide with a soft touch leading to the need to
attend to the side effect of the glidability Z - axis. Sounds like a good
problem to have as it was not a hard fix.

Yes, I am going to go the CNC route provided I can find all the parts
to do it. Are you saying you have the original CNC Upgrade Kit still in
the packing? Would you be interested in selling it? If so let's talk.
I'd be interested. Maybe send me an email with the particulars and a
picture or two and we can go from there.

Curtain Pole Rods?!? I'd not think of that on such a mill. The length
makes sense. The customer is always right. They must be commercial
enterprises to need poles that long.

I've added your facebook site to my desktop. While I have seen some of the
pics before I'm much interested in your upgrades. I'm assuming your chain
and sprocket router tower revolves around the CNC Upgrade?

ID of your machine should be pretty easy. I have a hidden history page
here. http://ornamentalmills.com/history/index.html . Also the missing
handle for the y-axis is available at several industrial suppliers but
McMaster-Carr is my preferred source for that part.

Subject: Newbie posting

Hello,
I wanted to post an introductory message to get started with this group.
My name is Ron and I acquired an old steel Legacy recently but have not yet
set it up. I couldn't pass it up for $200 including 6 or 8 Magnate bits.
It is about 9 ft long overall and is fairly complete though lacking a
support table. So one of my first tasks after I have thoroughly cleaned the
machine will be to fabricate a mobile cabinet style base for it.
My big concern is the lack of support for older models like mine. I don't
have a manual or parts list so I'm not sure of what is missing other than
the obvious things like the y axis handle.
When I have fully identified the model I have, I will post my needs in more
detail then perhaps someone in the group can give me some help.
I have a mechanical engineering and machinist background as well as machine
tool design and modification including CNC programming and use (although
it's been a few years). The point is I'm not too concerned about designing
or making the parts I need, but would appreciate all the help I can get
understanding the uses and nuances of this machine. With all the experienced
and skilled users posting here there appears to be no reason to reinvent the
wheel by going it alone.
So thanks in advance to all and hopefully I can add something as well once I
get going.
Regards,
Ron

Welcome to the group Ron. You will find using your older machine is the
same principle as all the so called newer manual machines. Did you get any
training videos with the machine? If not, www.legacywoodworking.com has two
places that you should have seen already. The first place to get started is
with the techniques http://legacywoodworking.com/techniques.cfm . Learn to
mount the stock and turn a piece round. Then add some beads and coves and
move on to doing some flutes. Don't use expensive wood or try to make a
master piece, just shred some pine and see how things handle. Then if
you're ready to just jump in you can look at the 10 skill building projects.

I will send you a link to download the manual for the steel machines in
private. We are authorized to share the manual within the group.

The most important thing, if something feels awkward or unsafe, it
probablably is. Ask questions! I have yet to see a really dumb question.

So thanks in advance to all and hopefully I can add something as well once I
get going.
Regards,
Ron

Hello Ron,Welcome!  And congrats on you recent acquisition.  You have come to the right place - and you started out on a high note by "introducing" yourself and sharing how you might "relate" to the Group. Now for some good news (That's what you get for "joining" us).  A couple months ago I emailed Tim Krause, one of our Group's "Gurus" and our Group moderator, a complete scanned copy of a "steely" Legacy Mill.  I expect he will reply to your email welcoming you in the next 24 hours.  I am sure there are other Steely owners - but you are the only one I have seen mention it so far.Do not be afraid to pose your questions and concerns.  I suggest you go to the Group's Home page and find the link for placing your "location pin" on the Owners Map.  By the way where are you located?  And where did you acquire the mill? Again, welcome.Mac-Original Message->From: Ron >Sent: Apr 4, 2013 9:23 AM>To: "legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com" >Subject: Newbie posting>>Hello,>I wanted to post an introductory message to get started with this group.>My name is Ron and I acquired an old steel Legacy recently but have not yet set it up. Posting Messages Reminder

2012-06-10 Thread Tim Krause
Hello All,

I want to remind people that use email that the messages that are stored in the
group are based on the subject line. When you change to a different topic,
please change the subject line so the details are easier to search for in the
future.

Also, please take a moment to delete some of the quoted message that is not
important. This makes it easier for the members that are reading the messages
in the digest format.

Keep the questions and comments coming, this is a user supported group, and
without each and everyone's input there would be no group.

-Tim

Posting Images to the group

2011-04-10 Thread Tim Krause
This is one long winded post! It's almost off topic in a way. It deals with
posting images to the group. Because of the complexities involved and the
variables I've skipped even starting to write about this topic for years.
Here's my first crack at it. Keep in mind, we have members with a wide range
of computer knowledge. There are many ways to deal with images on the group.
There are just as many options for posting images to the group. What I'm going
to attempt to do is talk about the process and some of the problems you may
encounter when sharing photos. This is a rough draft but it might turn into a
full blown web page.
-------

Posting Images in the Ornamental Mills Group

It comes down to these steps:

Part One: Taking Photos
1. Photographing the Subject.
2. Original size consideration.
3. Transferring photos to your computer.

Part Two: Editing Photos
1. Cropping.
2. Sizing for Web and Email

Part Three: Posting Photos
1. Email with images inline.
2. Email with images attached.
3. Linking to an image stored on a web site or free host.

Part One: Taking Photos

When taking a photo consider what the subject is and focus on that subject.
Excessive background is not needed in most cases. Consider the scale of the
item. Another common object can be included in your photograph to give the
viewer an idea of how big or small an object is. For example, a ruler or a
pencil could show the size of a small box.

Digital cameras have a setting that allow you to select image size. Usually
you will see options like VGA, 1m, 3m, 5m etc. Those numbers refer to the
amount of pixel stored for an image. For our use, 1mp or VGA is a good choice.
The resulting image will be sized 1280 x 960. The amount of file space it
takes up would be about 1mb. Google has a 10mb file size limit (that
constantly changes) but as a general rule smaller files are better for sharing
photos on the web.

What happens if you use a camera in say the 7mp mode? Simple, the photo becomes
3072 x 2304 in size. This is three times the size of most computer monitors
used today. The file size also becomes 7mb per photo. Remember Google's
limit? You could only post one of those pictures. We will talk about sizing
images in part two. If you cannot figure out how to change the setting on you
camera, we will take care of it in the editing phase.

The final part of getting the picture posted on line is getting the photos from
your camera to your computer. I don't think I can tell you how to do this. I
will say it usually involves plugging your camera into a port on your computer
with a cable or taking your camera and placing it in a cradle for your camera
that is hooked up to your computer. From there it become a drive just like
your hard drive. When you open "My Computer" you will see either a new device
or drive that you may not recognize. Explore that option and see if you see a
folder named DCIM. Inside that folder you will possibly see another folder
labeled 101MSDCF. Inside of that folder you will see files that are the actual
pictures. Select and copy them to your hard drive for you to edit them with.
This advice is really camera dependant. Manufactures all do things
differently.

This is where things get a little complicated. I would suggest naming a folder
on your hard drive where you store your images. For example you could have a
legacy folder. Inside of that folder you could have one called images that you
create. Inside of that you could create a folder called "roped column". There
is where you would store your pictures of a roped column project. Paste the
photos there. If this is a problem for you, editing and posting will be a
problem as well. Where you store the photos is called a "Path". I'm going to
skip explaining that and refer you to google to search for "working with
folders" or some basic computer tutorial.

The other option that might happen when you plug your camera in to your
computer is that a program may automatically fire up and transfer the photos
for you to some place that you tell it too. Once again, that is called a path
and you will need to write it down so when you go to grab the file you will no
where it is stored.

Wrapping up this section, you have taken a photo and you now have it stored on
your computer. Let's move on.

Part 2: Editing photos

A photo taken from your camera depending on the cameras setting can be all
sorts of sizes. It's possible you got too much background in the photo. We
can fix all of that and make the images easier to view and download by using a
photo editing software. This can be as complicated as you would like to make
it. You can choose from buying commercial software or using tools built into
windows or that came with yo
