2006-07-01 Thread Support
Mary,

We're having problems with the update within Legacy and with the "Install
from the Web" option.

Go to our website, select the Legacy menu item and then download. In Step 3
of the process, select "Download Full Setup".

Thanks for using Legacy.

Is anyone able to get to the server for upgrading Legacy? I've been holding
off upgrading from 6.0.0.83 but when I tried tonight, I'm getting a "Could
not communicate to the network server, error 3. 404 not found." error when
trying to download the upgrade files.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Standard and Legacy Deluxe

2006-07-01 Thread Jan Roberts
With Legacy Deluxe you can create your own narrative sentence formats using
the "Edit Event Sentence Definition" button located under the "Notes" box.
With a little bit of experimentation (and by using the "Sentence Override"
tab for specific instances that don't fit the sentence format you create)
you can have your narrative sentences read just as you want them.

Cheers,
Jan

Dear List,

I have Legacy Deluxe but dislike the narrative fact sentences. As I recall
Legacy standard does not have the fact sentences. Is there a method to
combine the two to my liking? If I revert to Legacy standard I lose certain
features. With Legacy standard can I produce a descendant or ancestry report
that includes notes, sources, and a list of facts.

With Legacy Deluxe, the only report that I have found that has the option to
use a list of facts vs. sentences is the Event report.

Kindest regards,

Re: [LegacyUG] Prepositions with location names

2006-07-01 Thread Wm Voss
You can always cheat by adding a null space (alt +0160) at the end when
creating the second location. You will get a space after the location
(Fullerton, Orange County, California .) in reports, but that is the
price to pay until some real solution can be found.

Wm Voss

Brian wrote:

The Preposition you tie to a given location will be used when you use

second location of New York, one with the preposition as probably and
one without. When you use the second copy of New York for those people
who you "know" were there their reports would use the standard "in"
and those where you use the version with the preposition of probably
will use that preposition.

Sorry! I just found the above will not work. I tried to make two
copies of a location name and Legacy went automatically to a merge
duplicate locations screen. It looks like you are not allowed to have
two locations with exactly the same name and different prepositions.
You will have to make some slight change in the way you name the
second New York to use that work around. That makes it easier to pick
the right one from the list anyway.

I suppose I could put in "city, county, state probably" and then the

2006-07-01 Thread Dermot McGlone

Must be a problem with Gmail, as I'm getting the same thing. Before
the change, after the first e-mail, they never went near the spam
folder, now every 1st message from an individual goes there, like
Gmail is now reading the "from:" rather then the "reply-to:" This is
just guess work. As far as I know, when you mark an e-mail address as
"not spam" all messages from that address should go straight to your
inbox (or whatever filters you've set-up).

3) Got Danish Ancestry? Most beginning genealogists start by researching and
extending the genealogy of their own surname. Not me - I started by
researching Browns, Williams, and Clarks. If you've got a surname like mine

4) Digging Details from Pre-1850 U.S. Census Records - Most genealogists
researching American ancestors love the detailed censuses taken between 1850
and 1930. Yet our eyes glaze over and our head starts hurting when we take
on the columns and head counts of the pre-1850 census enumerations. Many
researchers go so far as to avoid them altogether, or use them only as a
source for the head of household. When used together, however, these early
U.S. census records can often provide important clues to early American
families. . . . Read the complete article

That is my philosophy also. I consider the census a source for other
information, such as residence, occupation, and the usual bmd info.

Pre-1850 U.S. censuses I treat differently though.

I guess the one thing I ask myself before recording something as an
event is ... would I want it published in a report? I do not want census
events published, so I don't enter censuses as events.

Re: [LegacyUG] sourcing census

2006-07-01 Thread Jim Winfrey

Sourcing remains a concern for me. In my opinion, the census info
itself is my source, When I source a census, I have a copy of it so I
do not repeat all the data that is on the census sheet, just the year,
location, district, number and page number. That is enough
information to permit someone to find the census page. I file the
census page so I can refer to it if needed.. I guess I don't see the
need to meticulously repeat data that is available on a public
document.

On 6/30/06, Janis Gilmore <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I have experimented, off and on, over the last two days with the sourcing
for census data (probably a model for other sourcing in my database.

I have come up with a method that approximates the Elizabeth Shown Mills
standard, I think. It doesn't use a lot of the info boxes available in the
Master Source or the Source Detail screens - but depends mostly on typing it
exactly as I want it to print - into the Source Detail Text screen.

I would like to hear from some of the more experienced users about whether
or not they see pitfalls in this method.

In the Event Screen I put:
Event name: 1850 Census [I have events for each census year]
Description: Joel F. DeBoard, 14, b IL [person for whom event is
entered, although not head of household]
Date: 24 Oct 1850 [date of enumeration]
Place: District 13, White County, Illinois [place of enumeration]
Notes: All data on the whole census family.

Master Source/Info
(Shown in Master Source List) 1850 U.S. Census
(Book, deed, etc) Census/Tax
I leave everything else on this page blank, including author, title,
publication facts.
No repository, no comments, nothing.

Source Detail
Info screen empty, except for the surety level
Text tab, I entered the remaining source information as I wanted it to
print:
Elizabeth DeBoard household; White County, Illinois, population schedule,
District 13, p. 133 (penned), p. 333 (printed), dwelling 960, household 960,
digital image by subscription, *Ancestry.com* (http://www.ancestry.com :
accessed 29 June 2006) from National Archives microfilm 432, roll 132.

In the source detail on the Information screen, uncheck "Add this detail to
the Source Citation on reports"
In the source detail on the Text screen, check "Add this text to the Source
Citation on reports"

The resulting source looks like this:
.
5. 1850 U.S. Census. Elizabeth DeBoard household; White County, Illinois,
   population schedule, District 13, p. 133 (penned), p. 333 (printed),
dwelling 960, household 960, digital image by subscription, Ancestry.com
   (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 29 June 2006) from National Archives
   microfilm 432, roll 132.

I would appreciate anyone pointing out to me the possible fallacies of this
plan.

After you compact, make sure you refresh (F5) the Windows Explorer
display that you are looking at to determine the file size.

When I do a compact only, my filesize drops from 39MB to 13MB, then
immediately jumps back to 39MB. My guess is that compact, which is an MS
Access thing and not a Legacy thing, at some point drops and rebuilds
the indices. When you see the file size dip to 17MB, you are looking at
the database after the indices have been dropped, but before they have
been rebuilt. After compact finishes and before you do anything else in
your database, try hitting F5 in Windows Explorer and see if the
filesize doesn't go back to 40MB.

My Legacy windows are not appearing correctly, buttons and other objects
appear partly off the window (out of reach), this is mainly where they would

they still appear off screen or correct.

A possible cause of this is I have recently changed my monitor configuration

monitor system running at the lower res of 1280 x 1040. It doesn't matter if
