First question- which version are you using? 6.0.0.110?

I checked for that error number and didn't see it.

Self-help options are at:

IF that does not work, it is time to get Support's attention!

[LegacyUG] switch birth & alt. birth

2006-09-26 Thread SKL 1750
Hi,

I have birth info in both birth event and alt. birth event for an individual. There is enough info to make the alt. birth data more likely, but I would still like to keep the two.  Is there a way to switch the information in the two event without having to retype everything manually and add the sources one by one?

Thanks,

Hi Nina,
Yes - but make sure you haven't used the Alt. Birth Description field
as there is no corresponding field for Birth.

Highlight the Alt. Birth you wish to swap then click on the Options
button and click Swap with Birth Information. Sources and notes are
also swapped.

RE: [LegacyUG] Error Code 3204

2006-09-26 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Laurel,

This is a MS error code and it means what it says on the tin. Have you
recently tried to back up your multimedia files? If so the process might not
have been fully completed and a bit of a temp file has been left behind and
that could cause the problem. It is possible that it may be cured by
deleting one of the .usr files but if so I don't know which.

This is one which I think is for Legacy Support.

RE: [LegacyUG] Question about viewing sources

2006-09-26 Thread ronald ferguson

Sorry but cannot read the attachment as I do not accept them on lists.
However, the answers to your questions are:
a) The superscript indicates the end of the fields from the boxes ie. Event,
Description, Date, Place and is the divding point between the amendable
event sentences and any notes which may have been added.

b) Therefore it does not mean a source is attached
c) It is dark if no sources are entered. At least in my files it only shows
a list of sources which are available for use but not used
d) Not to my knowledge from within Legacy, as I use OpenOffice I cannot
advise about Access.

Legacy version 6.0.0.110
Build date: 28 Aug 2006
This is an imported gedcom.

When the screen to edit an event is opened from the main family screen
there is the resulting sentence created at the bottom (great feature!).
Most of the time there is what looks like a footnote mark (1) at the end of
the sentence indicating (I suspect, maybe erroneously) that a source is
attached to this event entry.

However that is not always the case. As will be seen in the attached image
(Legacy event.jpg), this "Education" event sentence has a superscript 1,
but the sources icon is not lit up. Yet when I click on the sources icon
to check the sources, I do find sources linked to other events for this
person but not for this source that has the superscript 1 (see assigned
sources.jpg, I've blanked out the names for privacy reasons).

Questions:
a) what does the superscript number mean?
b) if it means there is a source attached to it, how do I get to see it?
c) why is the sources icon dark even though I can find sources for this
person when I click on it?
d) Is there a report I can print out or a file dump that will show all the
sources present in Legacy's file AND the items they link to? (I can use
Access if that helps).

Jeff

[LegacyUG] problem with sourcing

2006-09-26 Thread pph929
I have Legacy 6.0.0.110.
This is complicated.
I am trying to find out how to get the source to post to the right field
without using the source clipboard.

To be specific--

(Let's say I am entering a bunch of info for a bunch of different people
who are already in my database. Most of the new info is from a single
source, a good genealogy book, which I have on put on the clipboard. NO
PROBLEM THERE.)

So I'm getting ready to enter info for Jane Doe, who is already in my
database from an old gedcome import, and the only info I have is her name.
The only info in the genie book is marriage info.

I want to enter her dob, which I'm picking up from a census that is
already in my Master Source list.

I do not anticipate that I will use this Census source again in the near
future, so I don't want to bother putting it on my source clipboard.

So to put in the birthdate, I go to Jane Doe's edit screen, and put my
cursor in the Born field and then click the source icon (the three books).

That takes me to the Assigned Sources screen, but it highlights the
"Unspecified Events line" which cites my gedcom import. I do have the
option of moving to the Name field (for which I have a different
citation), but the Assigned Sources screen offers no option for entering a
source for a "Born" or "Birth" field!??

So when I select the Census source and add it, it is added to the
citations for the "Unspecified Events" field or to the
citations for the "Name" field. THAT'S IT! !!??

OR -- I can put the Census on the Source clipboard. Then when I'm on the
Edit screen and put my cursor in the Birth field and then click on the
mark at the left to post that source to that particular event (Born) and
then check it out on the Assigned Sources screen, I see that the program
has added a "Birth" Event and put in the Census source.

SO-MY FIRST QUESTION is -- How can I get Legacy to add the Birth field
into the Assigned Sources so that I can add a source without going thru
the Clipboard routine??

ALSO, What REALLY scares me is this -- I began using Legacy MONTHS ago and
din't use the source clipboard for sometime. In the meantime I assumed
the sources I was citing were going in the fields I was clicking on.

But now I don't know!! Is this a NEW bug? Or has Legacy behaved this way
all along?? And what on earth can I do to be sure the facts and sources
are correctly matched?? It will take me weeks on end to go back and
verify everything.

check the sources, I do find sources linked to other events for this person
but not for this source that has the superscript 1 (see assigned
sources.jpg, I've blanked out the names for privacy reasons).

Questions:
a) what does the superscript number mean?
b) if it means there is a source attached to it, how do I get to see it?
c) why is the sources icon dark even though I can find sources for this
person when I click on it?
d) Is there a report I can print out or a file dump that will show all the
sources present in Legacy's file AND the items they link to? (I can use
Access if that helps).

On the Assigned Sources Screen have you got the "Show all Events" box
checked (it's just below and slightly to the right of the "Add a new Source"
button? If not it will only show those events which currently are sourced.

It sounds like when you're on the Assigned Sources window, that you need to
be sure to have a checkmark next to "Show all events". I think things will
work as you expected when that is turned on.

Sherry et al,
Please excuse this off topic posting, but it is peripherally related to
Legacy.

Everyone else, this is off topic, so please if you have any replies,
*PLEASE* send to me privately. I'd hate to clog up an already busy
list with this.

I need to get a new scanner to enable me to scan in photos, Etc. I
intend to use it primarily for Legacy purposes, but also for sharing
photos with other family members, especially a first cousin I've just
found out about, whom I never knew even existed until a year ago!

Have any of you got any ideas or help for me? What I need to look out
for, what I should avoid, Etc. Any tips or hints would be gratefully
appreciated.

Again, responses to me privately, please, and not directly to the list.

Thanks in advance,

Dermot.

Re: [LegacyUG] question about legacy program

2006-09-26 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Carolyn,

I ... wanted to know if it is possible to print all of the relatives.

I'm not highly experienced with all the reporting options available in Legacy,
but I've been taking a look at the various reports to see what I can find to
answer your query... You *can* produce reports for all the descendents of a
chosen person, or all their ancestors. But I don't see one that will include
*every* person in the database - is that what you were after?

However, with the Deluxe Edition you have more options than you can see with the
(free) Standard Edition, which you've said you have downloaded. Details of what
is available in Deluxe can be found at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DeluxeEdition.asp. It includes the Publishing
Centre, which allows you to combine reports into one. This would allow you to
specify reports that cover everyone in your database and combine them into one
report.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

reinstalled Legacy and the Picture Centre is working again. This is a great
usergroup! Laurel

Laura,

Try deleting the .DBM files in the Legacy folder on the hard drive and
reinstalling Legacy.

When I go into the Picture Centre, I get the following: Error 3204: Database

already exists.
Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN?No matter what I answer, it either
freezes my computer, or kicks me out of Legacy. I've done a Check/Repair
and tested the Multimedia paths. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help. Laurel

Re: [LegacyUG] Question about viewing sources

2006-09-26 Thread Brian/Support
The superscript indicates where a source would appear if one is attached
to the event. The sentence you see in the event definition is a sample
of how the sentence would appear in a report if a source is attached. To
see the actual sentence built by Legacy for a specific case you can
preview a report for someone who has the event.

Legacy actually has 8 forms of the event sentences. Which is used
depends on which fields in the event contain data. To see these 8
standard sentences click the Edit Event Sentence Definition button.

There is no superscript shown on the event sentence in your
assignedsources.jpg because there is no source connected to the
education event you have highlighted.

Legacy version 6.0.0.110
Build date: 28 Aug 2006
This is an imported gedcom.

When the screen to edit an event is opened from the main family screen
there is the resulting sentence created at the bottom (great feature!).
Most of the time there is what looks like a footnote mark (1) at the end
of the sentence indicating (I suspect, maybe erroneously) that a source
is attached to this event entry.

However that is not always the case. As will be seen in the attached
image (Legacy event.jpg), this "Education" event sentence has a
superscript 1, but the sources icon is not lit up. Yet when I click on
the sources icon to check the sources, I do find sources linked to other
events for this person but not for this source that has the superscript
1 (see assigned sources.jpg, I've blanked out the names for privacy
reasons).

Questions:
a) what does the superscript number mean?
b) if it means there is a source attached to it, how do I get to see it?
c) why is the sources icon dark even though I can find sources for this
person when I click on it?
d) Is there a report I can print out or a file dump that will show all
the sources present in Legacy's file AND the items they link to? (I can
use Access if that helps).

The JPEG and GIF files should be connected as pictures, that is what
they are. The Word Documents should open if you have Microsoft Word
installed on your computer. If you do not have Microsoft Word installed
then that is why they cannot be opened.

Re: [LegacyUG] adding an event address to multiple people

2006-09-26 Thread Brian/Support

Noelene,

The Descendant Report does include the option of including Event
Addresses. If yours is greyed out then try the reset button on the
report screen to reset the report to the default options. If that does
not work to make the event address option available then close Legacy,
delete the file Descend.usr from your Legacy program folder and then try
the Descendant Report.

I am hoping to generate my book as a narrative book report and I
wish the addresses could be included so people who have lost
touch with other relations could contact each other. Even though
addresses change over time, at least they should be reasonably
current at the time of book printing.

The word files are working now, the others were working as sound files

Carolyn,

Legacy doesn't provide a drop down descendent report like
the one you showed in Family Historian 3 without the use of an addon called
Treedraw. However i'd advise that you look closer than this since i think Legacy
holds many other features over Family Historian.

Re: [LegacyUG] adding an event address to multiple people

2006-09-26 Thread Noelene Jenkinson

Brian, in a descendant narrative report, the
Events are fine and available and I've ticked Event Addresses but still no
addresses appear in the report. Would it need to be the Individual Addresses
that are available which is greyed out in my programme?

  From:
  Brian/Support The
Descendant Report does include the option of including Event Addresses. If
yours is greyed out then try the reset button on the report screen to
reset the report to the default options. If that does not work to make the
event address option available then close Legacy, delete the file
Descend.usr from your Legacy program folder and then try the Descendant
  Report.
